    I feel honoured to have experienced prison – Tems

    Afrobeats singer, Temilade Openiyi aka Tems has spoken out about her harrowing experience in a Ugandan prison in 2020.

    In an interview with ESMagazine, Tems recounted her time in a cramped cell with multiple women, fearing physical abuse if she made a mistake.

    The Nation reported that Tems and fellow singer Omah Lay were arrested on December 13, 2020, for performing at an unauthorised concert and violating COVID-19 protocols.

    They were charged with spreading infectious diseases and detained for two days.

    Tems described her experience as “humbling” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to understand the struggles of detained women.

    She said: “Prison was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I actually feel honoured to have had because otherwise, I would never have thought about these people, and to be in their presence was very humbling,” she said.

    ‘I asked one of the girls there, “Do they beat people up here? Am I gonna be beat up?’ And she was like, ‘Only if you misbehave.’

    After her release, Tems advocated for the rights of women and children detained in similar circumstances.

    In a recent interview with popular YouTuber Korty EO, Tems shared that receiving a message from Rihanna made her realise her career had reached new heights, surpassing her expectations.

    Recall that Tems collaborated with Rihanna on “Lift Me Up” for the Black Panther 2 soundtrack and it further showcased her talent to a global audience.

    However, the DM from Rihanna solidified her recognition as a successful artist, validating her hard work and dedication to her craft.

    The host asked: “At what point did you realise that you’ve become successful?”

    Singer Tems has opened up about her love life, stating she has never been in love. 

    The ‘Crazy Tings’ crooner however said she would love to experience love someday.

    Speaking on the recent episode of the Flow With Korty show, Tems stated that contrary to the saying, “love is blind,” to her love is felt with eyes wide open.

    “I haven’t been in love. Loving someone for me is more of ‘I see you and I still want to be in your life. Even though you annoy me sometimes, I choose you and I choose you.’ I would like to be in love, to experience something deep but really real not blind. I don’t believe that love is blind, I think if you really love someone you’re loving them with your eyes open,” she explained.

    “I feel like people get infatuated and they call that falling in love. If you’re blind that is not love. Love is when you’ve seen the person, their yansh is open and you’re like ‘I still want it. I still want that.’ I want someone to see my goods and be like, ‘Yeah, give me some of that,” Tems added.

    I wear baggy clothes to avoid seducing producers – Tems

    Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems has revealed she deliberately wears baggy clothes to the studio to avoid seducing producers. 

    Tems, who is physically endowed, said she almost lost confidence in her appearance due to distractions from producers when making music.

    She shared this revelation in a conversation with YouTuber and content creator Korty EO.

    She revealed that her body posed a career hindrance, hence, she switched from wearing cute outfits to baggy ones to reduce attention from producers, particularly when she is going to the studio to make music.

    She said: “I used to not always like my body. I just didn’t understand a lot of things. I was going to a lot of studios alone, meeting people I didn’t know and had never met. I’ll message people to ask them to teach me how to produce music for people”.

    “So, because of my objective which is just wanting to make music, if my being attractive is disturbing you and stopping me from achieving my goal, I am going to help you. So, when I go to the studio, I wear baggy clothes and I’m in my alpha mode because I want you to not be seduced by me.”

    Grammy-winning singer Tems has said that many Nigerians do not fully resonate with her choice of music and sound.

    When asked in an interview with Korty if she feels appreciated by Nigerians and if they understand her music, she replied by saying she doesn’t think they fully grasp the essence and depth of her sound.

    However, she does feel personally appreciated as a person by Nigerians.

    In her words: “Understand, no. I don’t know if they appreciate my music but I feel appreciated as a person by Nigerians.”

    Award-winning singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems has pride herself in making the best decision when it comes to men. 

    According to Tems, she is an expert when it comes to choosing a partner.

    She explained that what she looks out for in a potential partner is humour, intelligence and probably height.

    The Oscar-nominated diva disclosed this on the ‘Chicken Shop Date’ with Amelia.

    “I have never had a bad date. I think I’m very good at picking men. Just make them your b*tch,” she said.

    On her ideal man, she said: “Just intelligence, funny. I feel like funny people are intelligent. As far as you are intelligent, tall… I don’t really care about height but..”

    Amelia inferred, “Okay, it sounds you do.”

    Tems added: “My love language is physical touch. I don’t know if my love language is act of service because I’m always the one doing the servicing.”

    Singer Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems has revealed that she sometimes cries while recording some songs.

    She said she cries because some of the songs she records are “very personal” to her.

    “I cried while making some of my songs because they’re very personal to me,” she told Billboard in a recent interview.

    She further said that almost all her songs were created from freestyles.

    Popular artists, Davido, Tems, and Lojay secured awards at the 2024 NAACP Image Awards, held virtually at naacpimageawards.net on Monday, March 11.

    Temilade Openiyi, otherwise known by her stage name, Tems received the outstanding international song for her “Me & U”.

    Davido and Lojay got on the awardee’s list for being featured on Chris Brown’s ‘Sensational’ which won the Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (contemporary) award.

    Chris Brown and Victoria Monet were the biggest winners at the 55th Image Awards with two awards each.

    While Brown won Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration (contemporary) for his hit ‘Sensational’, featuring Davido and Lojay, and Outstanding Duo, group or Collaboration (traditional) for his featured role on Ciara’s ‘How We Roll’.

    Money won the Outstanding Album and Outstanding New Artist, both for ‘Jaguar II’.

    Tems to perform at 2024 Billboard Women in music awards

    Grammy-winning singer, Temilade Openiyi popularly known as Tems, is billed to perform at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

    In a post via X on Thursday, Billboard revealed that Tems will perform at the event scheduled for March 6 at the YouTube Theater in California, USA.

    “BREAKTHROUGH honoree  @temsbaby will take the stage at the show for a performance on March 6 in Los Angeles,” Billboard wrote.

    The singer will also be honoured with a ‘Breakthrough Award’ at this year’s event.

    Other award recipients include Victoria Monét, Ice Spice, NewJeans, Maren Morris, Kylie Minogue, Charli XCX, Luísa Sonza, and Young Miko.

    Billboard disclosed that the honourees for the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards “demonstrate the degree to which music has become a global enterprise”.

    Multiple award-winning singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems recounted how her uncle convinced her to do the most dangerous thing ever.

    Speaking in a recent interview with Elle, Tems recalled a daredevil experience where she was forced to jump out of a plane while skydiving.

    The Oscar-nominated diva said jumping out of the plane was the most dangerous thing she has ever done.

    Interviewer: “What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done?”

    Tems: “The most dangerous thing I’ve ever done is jump out of a plane. I don’t even know how high but I went skydiving once. And I think for a second I was like, ‘Am I dying? I don’t know who sent me to do this. I don’t know why I decided to do this but here I am falling.’

    “My uncle convinced me and my cousins to jump. I was like, ‘Wow! So cool. Daredevil.’ And then we got into the plane and I was like I will just stay in the plane and they said I can’t. They pushed us out.”
