“The GOC who was flown by Nigerian Air Force, was accompanied by the Commander 26 Task Force Brigade, Brigadier-General IM Obot, and had meeting with the various field commanders.

“The success recorded has buoyed up troops morale who expressed enthusiasm in sustaining onslaught against the terrorists.

“The people of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states are requested to report any fleeing Boko Haram terrorist seen around their communities. They should also look out for the wounded terrorists and report to the nearest military or Nigeria Police Force location.”

•Air Force rains bombs on sect’s fortress

Seven terrorists of Boko Haram have been killed by soldiers in the latest military assault on the sect’s Sambisa Forest hideout.

The Army said yesterday that remnants of the terrorists were neutralised in a ‘decisive operation.’

The Air Force simultaneously rained bombs on the forest as the terrorists tried to interfere with land operations by the army.

The Army spokesperson, Brigadier General Sani Usman, said a number of the terrorists escaped with gun- shot wounds.

Two soldiers were wounded during the encounter and were subsequently evacuated by the Air Force to the hospital for treatment.

He said: “Troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE involved in Operation DEEP PUNCH II have continued to deal decisively with remnants of Boko Haram terrorists hibernating in Sambisa forest and other parts of Northern Borno State with tremendous successes.

The Air Force ,in a separate statement by its Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, said : “The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter aircraft, on 25 January 2018, successfully neutralized several Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs), who were poised to interfere with ongoing operations in the Sambisa general area.

“A NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform had sighted several BHTs on vehicles and gun trucks, which were carefully concealed in a forested area.

“Consequently, three NAF fighter aircraft were detailed to provide Close Air Support to own surface forces, which also engaged the insurgents.

“The fighter aircraft launched a bomb attack on the insurgents’ defensive positions while another wave of bomb attacks was launched at the insurgents’ gun trucks and vehicles, causing one them to go up in flames.

“Thereafter, one of the aircraft strafed a fleeing BHTs vehicle with rockets, destroying the gun truck in the process.

“The NAF aircraft’s mission destroyed not only the vehicles but also the workshop previously used by the insurgents to repair and retrofit their vehicles and equipment.”

The army and air force claims could not be independently confirmed.

  • FG uncovers Islamic State terrorists in Benue, other states

FG uncovers Islamic State terrorists in Benue, other states

The Presidency on Sunday said that security agencies have discovered Islamic State in West Africa, ISWA,  terrorists in Benue, and other states of the federation.
A Presidential source said that the group operating within some North Central and South-South sections of the country is using foreign terrorists and recruiting young men fighting and killing innocent persons in order to exacerbate tensions along the county’s ethnic, religious and regional fault lines.
The discovery, he said, was made following the arrest of several suspected attackers made up Fulani herdsmen, government-sponsored militias, militants and other miscreants in Benue Sate.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that among those in custody were many who spoke none of the languages native to Nigeria.
According to him, they mostly speak the French language.
He added “This is the first time that security officials have confirmed that the Islamic State in West Africa members are operating as a unit in Nigeria and the level of their penetration of the country.”
“A good number”of the Islamic State terrorists have been arrested not only in the Benue valley but significantly in several towns in Edo State, specifically in Akoko-Edo, Okpella and Benin as well as in Okene, in Kogi state.
“It is understood that the cell which has members in different parts of the country concentrates on recruiting young men to fight for the Islamic State in West Africa by unleashing the cold-blooded murder of innocent citizens.
“There was intelligence that they had planned several attacks here, before and during Christmas and the New Year. Their bombing targets included fuel depots, foreign missions and police and military establishments.
“Their network is very wide. But so much was achieved by the DSS which had made a significant number of arrests in the last two months that helped to preempt those attacks. This helped to save Nigeria from the spate of major terrorist attacks witnessed elsewhere that were syndicated by ISIS worldwide,” he said
The reports submitted to the presidency, he said, have also revealed that security officials now fear an influx of other ISIS members into many parts of the country.
“We are learning more and more about this complex and sophisticated network. This is the main reason why the secret service is not parading those suspects so far arrested. It has become clear to us by now, that the challenge facing this country is a serious one.”
When contacted, Presidency Spokesman, Garba Shehu confirmed that President Buhari had been receiving what he described as “report upon report on the situation in Benue and other states”
While stressing that the DSS has recorded a lot of success lately, he said that he had not been briefed on any of the reports.
  • Who are the real terrorists?

SIR: The presidency has just confirmed that the Fulani herdsmen killed over 756 people within two years during the previous administration. Why is the government telling us this? Is it to say that the current onslaught by the Fulani herdsmen is justified? The Buhari administration is being defensive that the killings did not start with this government. So what?

Why should Fulani herdsmen kill their fellow countrymen? Why should they deprive a human being his own life in order to give life to cattle? Why are these herdsmen destroying what others have developed with time, money and energy?

These Fulani herdsmen are frustrating other people’s comfort in order to create comfort for themselves. I can’t measure the magnitude of frustration that will be felt by a farmer who has worked tirelessly on his farm under the scorching sun for months or years just to get to same farm and see that the crop he is looking forward to harvesting and selling in order to earn a living has been destroyed by the people who sought refuge on his own land. With what is currently happening in the nation now, the frustrated farmer has two options; to either accept his fate or challenge the unfortunate farm destroyer and get killed.

Unfortunately, the government is adding salt to our injury and Nigeria is on the brink of becoming a nation that once existed. This is the same government that declared IPOB a terrorist group within the twinkle of an eye. IPOB was declared a terror group the moment it became violent with its demands. You and I know the real terrorists. The government knows them too.

The Fulani herdsmen have killed thousands of Nigerians. They killed our people, raped our women, looted our money and destroyed our farmland and properties. They are the real terrorists. The government knows this but is allowing the herdsmen to get away with murder.

The President should remember his own words; “I belong to everybody, I belong to nobody”. No killer Fulani herdsman should be allowed to go scot-free. President Buhari should come out and declare war on any Fulani that kills his fellow countrymen; in fact, the Fulani herdsmen should be declared a terror group.

Meanwhile, I share no faith in the belief that establishing grazing areas in all part of the nation will solve the problem. Why? We should know that the Fulani herdsmen are not only killing people because they want to get food for their cattle. The killing of over 70 people and destruction of property worth millions of naira in Benue state is a testimony to this. What has the killing of 70 people got to do with the feeding of cattle?

Indeed, Nigeria has reached a defining moment in its history, there is problem everywhere. The Fulani herdsmen are killing people everywhere, IPOB is agitating for secession, the Niger Delta militants are coming out with renewed vigour and our president is asking the World Bank to focus on the Northeast; it is time to renegotiate our unity as a nation. We need to restructure. Our structure is too Abuja-centric, power must be devolved.

  • Tiv community wants killer herdsmen declared as terrorists

Tiv community wants killer herdsmen declared as terrorists

As the mass burial of victims of the Benue attacks was done on Thursday, a community of Benue State indigenes in Kaduna under the auspices of Mdzough U Tiv has called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of urgency, declare Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and its leadership a terrorist group.

This was also as it said the Inspector General of Police should resign if he cannot provide security for the innocent Tiv people.

Addressing a press conference in Kaduna, members of the Tiv community, led by its President, Shimakyaa Iorkyase, also asked the Tor Tiv, HRM Prof. James Ortese Ayatse, to revoke the title of ZEGE MULE U TIV given to the former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, saying that he was not living up to the expectations of the title of “the big shield” given to him.

According to Iorkyase, “As peaceful and accommodating as the Tiv people are, there is the grand plan to exterminate us and occupy our God-given land by Fulani herdsmen.

“In their quest to resist the anti-open grazing legislation already operational in Benue State and take over the state as threatened on 23rd October, 2017 and reported by the Leadership newspaper of 24th October, 2017, on 1st of January 2018, at about 10:00am, Fulani Herdsmen mindlessly attacked peaceful and harmless church goers in Gaambe-Tiev, Ayilamo and Turan in Logo Local Government Area.

“On the same day, in Nongov district of Guma Local Government Area, Umenger, Tse-Akor, and Tomatar near Tse-Abi were ruthlessly attacked, killing over 59 people with over two hundred injured and properties worth hundreds of millions smashed.

We voted massively for the APC-led federal government and cannot accept the killing of our wives, children, brothers and sisters as the dividend.

“We unequivocally stand with our governor His Excellency Dr. Samuel Ortom, the government and people of Benue State over the full implementation of the anti-open grazing law.

“People who have livestock should ranch as it is applicable in most civilised countries of the world. We are Farmers and cannot allow cows to take over our farms!

“We are in total agreement with distinguished Senator Shehu Sani when he said and I quote: ‘Helmsmen must confront herdsmen. One minute silence and repeated words of condolences and sympathy cannot address the problem or end the bloodshed.’

“We cannot continue to watch our harmless brothers and sisters being wiped off maliciously. We therefore resolved that the Federal Government should declare Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore and its leadership a terrorist group.

“We call on the Chairman of Benue Traditional Council, HRM, Orcivirigh Chief Prof. James Ortese Ayatse, the Tor Tiv V to revoke the title of ZEGE MULE U TIV given to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, as the MULE is not providing us with the expected shield.

“We demand that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to personally visit to see the level of destruction and console the government and people of Benue State.

“The leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, having been proscribed as a terrorist group, be arrested and prosecuted to prove that the Federal government has no hands in the killings.

“We condemned in strongest terms the statement credited to the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Idris Ibrahim, that the planned genocide in Benue State was a communal dispute. This is the most unprofessional statement of the year!

“We therefore refuse to accept the claim by Alhaji Garus Gololo (Benue State Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association) that Tiv men rustled 1,000 Fulani cows, and as such, they came back killing innocent people in retaliation. Where on earth is human lives a replacement for stolen cows?

“That the Federal Government should investigate the immediate and remote causes with a view to bringing to book the perpetrators and compensating the victims.

“The security agents should match words with action. We call on well-meaning and spirited individuals to provide relief materials to the displaced persons in the various camps across the state.

“We therefore commiserate with the families of the victims and pray God to accept the repose of the departed souls.”

Another group under the auspices of Tiv Youth Council (TYC) also asked the Inspector General of Police to tender his resignation letter for labelling the killings and wanton destruction of properties by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State as a mere communal clash.

The group, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Comrade Terseer Fabian, said the IG’s utterance was biased and suspicious enough to consider his indirect involvement in sponsoring attacks on Benue people.

Calling for the replacement of the IG with a competent hand, Fabian described his statement as a move “to justify and exonerate the herdsmen’s activities” in the state.

  • When leaders become terrorists

    When leaders become terrorists

Terrorists in the cockpit’, that is what the Nigerian born but London based Barrister Dotun Oyeniyi titles his new book which he presented to the media at Ikeja last week.

Presenting the book to a gathering of journalists, Oyeniyi who was an aspirant for the House of Representatives election in Osun State in the 2015 election on the platform of the All Progressives Party, APC, said the book is a narrative of Nigeria’s systemic failures.

According to him, “the book talks about the general trouble bedevilling the country. It talks about everything wrong with the country; leadership failure and decadence in the system, and what has gone wrong with the country”.

The author did not stop at the ills and giving graphic details and narratives of these malaise, he also went ahead in the book to profer solutions to the problems plaguing the nation.

Some of the problems Oyeniyi identified in the book includes: master/slave mentality between the leaders/elite and the masses, loopholes in the constitution and people feeding on these loopholes, corruption, terrorism, ritual killings and getting money diabolically, kidnapping, injustice, inequality, mediocres in power, unemployment, lack of power (electricity) and others.

“Underlining all these ills is the excruciating pains of human tragedy for a newly wed whose wife died in the maternity ward; for young children who lost their parents in a motor accident due to bad roads; for parents watching their children die due to poor medical care and indeed for thousands of families who have lost loved one’s in situation that could have been prevented in a nation with good leaders”, he said.

Oyeniyi said the book is not leaders friendly “because it is factual”, saying “because I am writing to make history or for history, I am not writing to make money”.

He likens the office of the leaders/rulers of the nation to the cockpit which he describes as the soul of the plane which he likens to the nation with the leaders as pilots in the cockpit in whose hands the destiny of all the passengers in the plane are.

“If the pilot turns out to be wolves in sheeps clothing by turning terrorists midair, or if some terrorists manage to hijack the cockpit from the pilot, the passengers are in real danger.”

“While the chief of state either through election in a democracy or military imposition through coup, is the pilot, other senior government functionaries are the flight attendant. When the acts of the leaders of a nation wreak havoc that are tantamount to terrorism on the citizens, or when leaders deliberately employ terrorism against their own citizens, it is reasonable to conclude that in that nation, terrorists are in the cockpit”, Oyeniyi said.

He said Nigeria is a very rich country and wondered why her citizens are so poor. “If Nigeria is a democracy, why are the rights of her people wantonly trampled upon? The simple answer which this book attempts to give through multifaceted narratives of events in Nigeria is that ‘Terrorists (are) in the cockpit’”, he said.

The 324 pages book has nine chapters with the last chapter captioned, ‘Towards a people’s government’, devoted to proferring solutions to bail the nation out of the malaise which is all embracing.

These includes: a people’s government premised on genuine democracy to serve as a vital bridge to link the nation to a state of social justice, egalitarianism, equity, the rule of law,  development, peace and social equilibrium.

Others are: an and to master/servant mentality, thuggery, patronage and political godfatherism, political dynasties, self and political recycling.

As well as enthroning true federalism, erecting a wall between the state and religion, a more functional educational system, unity in, and love of diversity, sacrosanctity of justice, equality before the law, strong and independent judiciary, free market economy, provision of uninterrupted power, etc.

  • Three die as troops engage terrorists

Three die as troops engage terrorists

Two female suicide bombers and a soldier died as troops of Operation Lafiya Dole engaged Boko Haram members in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The soldier died from the impact of shrapnel from a detonated Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED). Three soldiers were injured.

Reports said the body had been evacuated while the injured are being treated in a military hospital.

A statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, said: “Troops of 28 Task Force Brigade on Operation Lafiya Dole, about 7 pm, on Monday, repelled Boko Haram terrorists attack in Gulak, Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

“The troops fought gallantly to repel the terrorists, who attempted to infiltrate Gulak. The troops thwarted the terrorists by neutralising a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) trying to ram into a stationary gun truck.

“Unfortunately, the shrapnel from the detonated VBIED killed a soldier and injured three others. The remains of the soldier have since been evacuated while the injured are receiving attention in a military hospital.”

  • A harvest of terrorists

With court declaration that the activities of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra IPOB amounted to acts of terrorism and illegality, the debate on the legality of earlier classification by the military appears to have been foreclosed. Yet, the government tackled the problem from the answer before establishing the processes that would lead to it. Solving a mathematical puzzle from the answer is bound to draw the ire of any examiner.

The military had declared the IPOB a terrorist organization on allegations of forming a Biafra Secret Service, Biafra National Guard, blocking of public access roads, extortion of money from innocent civilians and possession of weapons (stones, Molotov cocktails, machetes and broken bottles). The classification at once, elicited two sets of criticisms. The first hinged on the right of the military to make such declaration given that our laws have no place for them in the process.

Perhaps, the most contentious of the criticisms was whether the reasons proffered satisfied both the necessary and sufficient conditions for declaring IPOB a terrorist organization. Even the worst critics of the strategies of the IPOB will hesitate to buy into the argument that these constituted sufficient grounds for them to be labeled a terrorist organization. That is the truth of the matter.

The proscription of IPOB is a fait accompli even as experts have faulted the court order and the overall competence of the ruling. It is needless dissipating energy on the processes that led to it; whether it was the right option in the circumstance or what interests it is meant to serve. It is also too late to pontificate on the non-violent disposition of the group, the fact that they neither carry arms nor are they known to have attacked targets (hard or soft) inflicting harm on lives and property for impact.

Their first encounter of throwing stones and blocking road for the enforcement of the on-going Operation Python Dance exercise turned out their greatest undoing, attracting proscription and a terrorist label. Before then, they had largely operated as a very peaceful and non-violent organization. The indecent haste with which the military termed the group a terrorist organization enabling the government to tow the same line raises suspicion. This is more so given the delay and opposition from the north against tagging the Boko Haram insurgents a terrorist group even when they had bombed the UN building in Abuja and many churches killing hundreds of innocent worshippers.

But the question that agitates the mind especially given IPOB’s focus on self-determination is the efficacy of the proscription and profiling in addressing issues to the agitation. We will also have to contend bias and double standards in the processes and circumstances culminating in the current fate of the group.

The Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has of late been bandying all manner of allegations against the group. He has alleged foreign funding; that Kanu was caught in a video in London in 2015 soliciting money for weapons and openly solicits for arms and funds.  He also accused France of being the financial headquarters of IPOB and claimed the UK rebuffed their request to shut down radio Biafra.

Ironically, much of the statements emanating from Mohammed are laced with high level propaganda. Mohammed is entitled to launder the image of the government in the face of strident criticisms that have dogged the mishandling of the IPOB matter. He is also at liberty to bandy frivolous claims around as is now evident from the reactions of France and UK.

He can go ahead and heap praises on northern governors for forestalling reprisal attacks in the north. He is free to simulate danger of any magnitude and proportion to the incidents in Port Harcourt, Umuahia and Aba and downplay the ones in Jos, Kaduna and Sokoto. He can pontificate and reel out claims that will justify a non-violent self-determination group as a terrorist organization. He is entitled to his views especially as the end has already justified the means.

But in overdramatizing the issue, he should not gloss over the fact that this country is home to mindless and unprovoked attacks on lives and property by sundry groups under various guises.  Religion-induced riots that claimed lives and property of inestimable value have been rampant in some parts of the country. There are also the deadly escapades of the Fulani herdsmen. The last time I checked, I could not remember any time there were reprisal attacks from those who lost their loved ones and property from such frequent and unprovoked attacks. Given the minister’s over dramatization of the issue of reprisals, it would appear the enormous sacrifices by sections that have borne the brunt of these attacks are being taken for granted.

Northern governors are on point for counseling their subjects to refrain from self-help even in the face of provocation. Their delegation has also been in the South-east to build confidence, reassure their indigenes that all is well and save the country from plunging into further crisis. That is commendable.

All the same, it is wrong to convey the impression that the infraction witnessed in the South-east in the last couple of days compares with the activities of the herdsmen to warrant the treatment they have now received. It is also difficult to fathom how Fulani herdsmen declared by Global Terrorism Index as the fourth deadliest group in the world can escape the tag of a terrorist organization. In this deadly matrix, the herdsmen came after Boko Haram, ISIS and Al-Shabab.

Yet, the Nigerian government sees nothing wrong with their murderous activities. Ironically, the same government that deliberately shut its eyes to the huge danger the herdsmen constitute to the peace and security of the country went into a frenzy to invent all manner of reasons to hound and obliterate all that IPOB stands for irrespective of whatever procedural defects that may have trailed some of their actions. It is also a curious coincidence that the action of the government has met the demands of Arewa youths who wrote to the UN to label IPOB a terrorist organization.

The same youth group issued the quit order to the Igbo. The government may have decimated the IPOB through the ban. It may have as well driven them underground. Those found with evidence of some form of connection with the group henceforth, stand to face the raw teeth of the law. They also face other severe consequences depending on the circumstances and the agencies that caught them.

But do the measures remedy the issues that threw up the IPOB? The answer is no. Are they capable of eliciting favorable dispositions and reconstructing the minds of the agitators away from the complaints that compelled them to the discipleship of Kanu? I do not see that happening. If anything, the proscription will further reinforce those fears for which they fell for Kanu’s Biafra option. They will be more inclined to see the high-handedness of the Buhari regime as a further proof that they do not really count in the affairs of this country.

They will continue to wonder why the same government kept mute while the Fulani herdsmen held the nation hostage. They will begin to nurse the feeling that perhaps, if one of theirs was occupying the highest political office in the country; if they had representation at the highest echelon of the military, their situation would have been different. The ban cannot change the minds of those who believe in what IPOB stands for. It cannot decimate agitations for Biafra until the systemic dysfunctions that gave rise to them are decisively and realistically addressed. At any rate, there are still three other groups professing the same ideas that are not affected by the proscription.

The government erred by the indecent haste with which it tagged IPOB a terrorist organization. It is one thing to ban the group and entirely another to label it a terrorist organization. The latter goes with serious repercussions. With Boko Haram, the deadly escapades of the Fulani herdsmen and now IPOB, we have made a clear statement in the world terrorism index. We will have to contend with this dialectics.

  • IPOB not a terrorist group, says Ohaneze

IPOB not a terrorist group, says Ohaneze

The highest decision making organ of Ohaneze Ndigbo, the Imeobi, has faulted the declaration of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, as a terrorist group by the Army.

The Imeobi made its position known in a nine point communique it issued at the end of its emergency meeting at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel Enugu.

The communiqué was signed by Ohaneze President -General, John Nnia Nwodo and Secretary-General, Uche Okwukwu.

The Army had two days ago declared IPOB a terrorist organisation after clashes with its men in Aba and Umuahia in which some persons reportedly lost their lives.

The clashes followed the launch of operation python dance II by the Army in the South East region.

The clashes also forced the South East Governors to proscribe the Nnamdi Kanu led secessionist group on Friday after it’s meeting in Enugu attended by Ohaneze and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

But the Imeobi in faulting the declaration argued that the Army did not follow due process.

“That Imeobi resolved that IPOB is not a terrorist organization. There are processes under extant national and international laws, especially the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011, as Amended in 2015 to determine whether a group is or not a terrorist organization”, the group said.

The group also described as regrettable, the decision of the Nigerian Army to commence Operation Python Dance II in the South East and called for immediate termination of the exercise

It further argued that military option is never a solution to problem of nation-building.

“We refer for instance to the goings on in Spain, Scotland and other parts of the world to reaffirm that only through dialogue can the national question be resolved. Consequently, we condemn all acts of violence in pursuance of freedom of expression”, the group said.

The Imeobi noted with great concern the continued policy of marginalization of South East Nigeria arguing that it is “the basic cause of the renewed agitation by the separatist groups”.

The group further described as unfortunate and deplorable the loss of lives during the Armed Forces intervention and conveyed it’s sympathies to the bereaved families.

The Imeobi maintained “that it is the sole responsibility of the Police in every democracy to maintain law and order and protection of lives and property of its citizens”.

It commended the efforts of the Governors of the South East, South East National Assembly Caucus and Ohanaeze leadership to douse the tension in the South East zone and urged them to continue in their efforts until normalcy is restored.

Ohaneze further reiterated that “a united Nigeria under a restructured federal system of government that guarantees justice, equity and fairness is the best system for this country”.

The Imeobi also approved the dissolution of the National Executives of Youth and Women Wings of Ohanaeze.
