  • Court rejects pro-Buhari group’s name in N40b suit against Atiku

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Apo has struck out the name of a group – the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) from a N40 million libel suit filed in the name of BCO and President Muhammadu Buhari against the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last presidential election, Atiku Abubakar.

In a ruling on Wednesday, Justice Binta Mohammed said the BCO, listed as the 2nd plaintiff, “is not known to law.”

Justice Mohammed agreed with lawyer to Atiku, Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN) to the effect that, not being a juristic person, BCO cannot sue or be sued.

The ruling was on a motion by Atiku, marked M/3117/19, in which he sought for an order striking out BCO (the 2nd plaintiff / respondents) as a party in the suit on the grounds that it is not a juristic person that can sue or be sued in his name.

Chukwuma-Ume, while moving the motion on Wednesday, urged the court to hold that the 2nd Paintiff (BCO) is improperly joined as a party in the case.

He argued that for the suit to be properly constituted, so as to vest jurisdiction on the court, parties must be juristic persons known to law and competent.

In the substantive suit, marked FCT/HC/CV/ 804/2019, the plaintiffs   accused Atiku and his aide, Phrank Shaibu of making several defamatory statement in the media, to the effect that Buhari used his position as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and head of the government, to fraudulently acquire two private companies, Keystone Bank Plc and 9Mobile Communication Ltd for himself, his family members, and friends.

The plaintiffs also stated that Atiku and his aide falsely claimed to the effect that President Buhari acquired the said companies using his influence and the control he has over the head of parastatals or organisations that are connected with activities of the companies.

They maintained that the unverified and false allegations it said was sponsored by Atiku, “caused grave pain, embarrassment”, to President Buhari, and thereby calling his (Buhari’s) integrity to question.

  • Israel inaugurates 2nd Bible contest on promotion of moral education in Nigeria

The Embassy of Israel in Nigeria has inaugurated the 2nd National Old Testament Bible Contest in Nigeria and Africa at large to promote moral education.

Mr Shimon Ben-Shoshan, Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, said this in his address at the official inauguration of the National Bible contest on Wednesday in Abuja.

The event on the theme: ”Unveiling the Secrets of the Land” was organised by Israeli Embassy in collaboration with Israel’s Ministry of Education and the Christians United for Israel, a faith-based organisation.

Ben-Shoshan described the theme as significant to Nigeria because it is a nation that is blessed with many visionaries and entrepreneurs.

According to him, the Jewish people are blessed by receiving the Bible and have studied it for centuries; the study of the Bible is the unveiled secret of our culture of innovation nowadays.

Ben-Shoshan said: ”Israel’s first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion welcomed the creation of a Bible contest in 1958, to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the state of Israel.

”As that first competition was broadcast on radio 61 years ago the nation’s pulse raced; Israel followed the competition with sense of pride that swelled from being country of the Bible.

”Since then, the Bible contest has been an annual event that has drawn Biblical scholars and enthusiasts from all ends of the globe to compete on knowledge of the Old Testament.

”For these reasons, we desire the contest in Nigeria continues every year; the contest has helped to ring people of diverse religious background together on importance and relevance of biblical education.

”I therefore believe that holding a country-wide bible competition in all six-geo-political zones can serve as a cultural bridge between people of Nigeria and Israel.”

He said that the contest is open for people from 21 years and above and that it would commence on April 15, across the country through registration on www.abuja.mfa.gov.il

He mentioned that the contest would be carried out in three stages at state, zonal and then national level, with two finalists from each stage proceeding to the next level.

Also, the first two stages would be internet-based and the final stages which hold in November in Abuja would be handwritten in front of professional judges from Israeli Ministry of Education.

Speaking, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), commended Israel for the ability to turn challenges into opportunities, being a lesson Nigerian can learn from.

Ayokunle, represented by Rev. Steven Adegbite, Director, National Issues of CAN, said that the contest would help to divert the attention of young people from irrelevant thing to reading the scripture.

According to him, for you to now have something like this is to return us to the scripture.

”Joshua Chapter 1 Verse 8, says the book of the law must not depart from you, you must meditate on it day and night and you must teach it to your children.

”When that is done, it is going to be well with you and with your children and that is what you have asked us to do.

”We thank you for the opportunity to ask the younger ones to come to the knowledge, instead of dissipating their efforts in other things that we notice in the world today.”

He explained the Old Testament to mean New Testament contained and that the New Testament is the Old Testament explained.

He, however, promised to support Israel in the organisation of the event and in other areas of bilateral relations with Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 1,800 people participated in the first edition of the contest in 2018, which had the theme: ”Living peacefully in the promised land”.

This event is part of activities to mark the 71st anniversary of Israel’s Independence on May 14 and also 61 years since the first Bible contest was held in Israel

  • AC Milan face potential Champions League ban

AC Milan’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League have been thrown into doubt after they were referred to the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) for allegedly breaching financial fair play (FFP) regulations for a second successive term.

Milan are fourth in Serie A and close to returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2014, but could now face a ban from European competition.

They had claimed their financial situation would improve under the ownership of American hedge fund Elliott Management Corporation, after they assumed control of the club from former owner Li Yonghong last summer.

UEFA initially gave Milan a two-year ban from European competition for breaking FFP rules last summer but they successfully appealed against that sanction with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“The UEFA Club Financial Control Body investigatory chamber has today communicated its decision to refer the case of AC Milan to the CFC adjudicatory chamber as the club has failed to comply with the break-even requirement during the monitoring period assessed in the current season and covering the 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons,” a UEFA statement read.

“UEFA will be making no further comments on the matter until a decision has been reached by the CFCB adjudicatory chamber in this case. This referral is not related to the decision that was made by the CFCB adjudicatory in December 2018 and was covering the 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.”

Under FFP regulations, clubs are not allowed to make losses of more than £26 million over three seasons, a cap Milan were accused of breaching between 2015-17 when they spent £200m on transfers. However, this referral is in relation to the three-year period between 2016-18.

The Rossoneri, who appointed former Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis as CEO in December, were fined in January following the €35m signing of Paqueta.

“After the signing of Paqueta, a letter arrived from UEFA where we were asked about any similar investments — along with a fine,” sporting director Leonardo said in December.

  • ‘Why Enelamah couldn’t attend Abia APC activities’

The inability of the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, to attend day- to- day activities of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Abia state was due to his tight schedules, an associate has confided.

The associate pointed out the minister in the last four years operated a very tight work schedule given the nation’s desire to diversify the economy, which has compelled him to lead the foreign investment drive.

However, the associate added, this has not stopped him from playing his roles as one of the party leaders from the state.

He pointed out the minister has always been represented in all activities of the party in his state.

Some party chieftains in the state have advised against his reappointment accusing him of not committed to the party and exhibiting indifference to party- related issues.

Reacting to the call to the President to drop the minister, the associate said: “I don’t know the reason for all the noise and being sponsored by clandestine people.

“There are some party leaders who are gingering this bickering of the political machinery of the state.

“He has supported the state in all capacities, it may not be money, but the economic dividend of his position will however manifest in the state.”

Enelamah, the associate added, has done very well for the state in area of attracting federal government project and other investment opportunities.

“That he does not answer to day- to- day activity of the party in the state does not make him an absent member

“This is a man who jets out of this country making sure that foreign investment profile is internationally recognised and reasonable, but then he has his foot soldiers all over.

“I can assure you that he is well represented in any capacity concerning the affairs of the party.

“His physical presence may not really matter but he is well represented in all the political party activities.

“He has done so much for the state and we looking at the dividends of democracy, I personally have brokered a meeting between him and the party executives and he has carried them all along.

“He vowed that in the whole state in the east no state will benefit anything more than Abia state.

“In every aspect of democracy Abia has benefitted. Among the achievements of the Minister in Abia state is the Eyimba economic free zone that has the capacity of employing more than seven thousand Abians.

“These are projects that are beyond party affiliations irrespective of who is in power, it is for economic benefit of the state by extension the nation, he has so much laid emphasis on made in Aba products which attracted the presence of the federal government by incessant visit of the Vice President who has constantly represented President Muhammedu Buhari in that capacity knowing the potentials of Abia, Aba when it comes to Made in Nigeria goods.”

He associate added: “He has also gone across board to make sure investors come to recognise the potentials of Aba and has laid so much foundation for complete potentials, harnessing the potentials for Aba for the near future.

“There are so much road infrastructural facilities which he has attracted by way of Abia state being one of the states of the NDDC.”

  • 8 easy ways to raise a genius in Nigeria

According to child development experts and neuroscientists, the brain develops quickest during childhood. It is critical in the intellectual development of your son/daughter that you train them in the way you wish for them to go.

Now, you may not be a genius but, if you are willing to be the parent of a genius then here are ways in which you can achieve that:

    1.    Let your child see you doing smart things. Kids learn by modelling adult’s behaviour.  If he sees you engaged in reading books, writing, making music, or doing creative things, he will imitate you, and in the process make himself smart.

    2.      Allow your child to get bored. According to Julia Robinson, Education and Training Director of the Independent Association of Prep Schools, it is okay for your child to get bored.

Learning to be bored is part of preparing for adulthood. Your child should learn to enjoy “quiet reflection” instead of forcing him to fill his days with activities.

    3. Talk to your child using words and descriptions beyond their appropriate age level. They may not understand at first but the more you use the same word in a similar situation, you child will learn the context of its use.

    4.   Read to your child. Your child’s brain would start to work on connecting ideas and stories with compatible information. Reading to your child, as early as infancy, develops an inquisitive child. Their brain learns to crave more information and instills the desire for more awareness and understanding.

    5.   Engage your child in music lessons. Learning music employs the use of their eyes, ears, large and small muscles and adaptive learning cognition skills. Parents should do well to incorporate music lessons into their child’s every day routine. This musical learning ability facilitates the habits of a genius in the making!

    6.      Allow your child to think and solve problems by himself – Avoid always solving problems for your child. Instead offer him hints on how to solve the problem himself. For example, ask him leading question like “have you done something similar before, what did you do?”

    7.       Give your child a growth mindset. According to psychiatrist Joe Brewster, kids should be encouraged to see learning as the process of becoming better at something, instead of having a fixed mind-set of his intelligence. When your child fails, he should see it as an opportunity for growth, instead of seeing himself as a failure.

    8.      Allow your child to take risks and fail. Kids who don’t take risk and experience failure or pain like falling off a bike or losing in competitions can develop low self-esteem and phobias, discourage creativity and learning for themselves.

Also, do not rescue kids too quickly. Let them solve problems on their own so they learn from their experience.
