  • Poisoning of OAU dam, act of genocide—Management

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has described the poisoning of its dam by suspected hoodlums as an act of genocide against members of the institution.

Some aggrieved indigenes of Ile-Ife, who claimed ownership of some portions of the university land, had on April 3 invaded the university and allegedly poisoned the institution’s dam with a chemical.

Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, the university’s Public Relation Officer, who conducted journalists round the disputed land and the dam within the school’s premises, on Wednesday said the poisoning of the dam was genocidal.

Olanrewaju said the chemical used in poisoning the dam, which was the only source of water for the university, killed all the aquatic animals in it.

He, however, said that the dam had been treated and was now safe to drink.

“The act is condemnable and wicked. How can some group of people poison the only source of dam where the over 36,000-strong university population was drinking from?

“The act is genocidal and wicked. They came through the Parakin area of the town to poison the dam but God was so good to us that immediately the dam was poisoned, rain fell for two days which washed the poisonous chemical away.

“We have treated the water and laboratory test had been done on it and now it is very safe to drink,” Olanrewaju said.

Olanrewaju also said the disputed land belongs to the Federal Government, adding that the university was not ready to concede it to anybody.

According to him, the land which is about 162 hectares was given to the university in the 60s by the then Ooni of Ife, Oba Adesoji Aderemi.

He said the land grabbers had started selling some portions of land to the people while construction workers working on the proposed OAU International Secondary school on the land were chased away with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons by the hoodlums.

Olanrewaju said three blocks of hostels built for students on the said land were abandoned due to attacks by the hoodlums.

“For the safety of our children in the university, the vice-chancellor instructed us not to allocate any of 360 rooms newly built hostel to them.

” The vice-chancellor has also instructed our security men not to retaliate but it is not possible for anyone to invade Federal Government land for personal gain because the land is gazetted.

“We have informed the police and other security agencies and we believe they will act accordingly.

“We have also informed the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and Ife Development Board,”Olanrewaju said.

He, however, said that anyone who was ready to use any portion of the land for the generality of the people and not for personal gain could approach the university for consideration.

He said that the following day, the complainant greeted the  defendant but she did not return the gesture.

He said this  later led to an argument which  made the defendant to lock the door on the complainant, hit her with a coke bottle on the head and gave her the beating of her life.

    The defendant denied the charge.

The Chief Magistrate Layinka granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties each in the like sum.

Layinka ruled that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.

She adjourned the case till April 25.

  • Khashoggi murder: Family denies considering settlement

The children of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, on Wednesday denied discussing any sort of settlement over his killing by Saudi agents.

This followed a report that the family was considering accepting financial and material compensation for his death.

“Currently the trial is taking place and no settlement has been discussed or is being discussed,” said the statement, published on Twitter by Khashoggi’s eldest son, Salah.

The Washington Post, where Khashoggi was a columnist, reported last week that the children were given million-dollar houses and monthly five-figure payments as compensation.

But it added however, that it was a separate deal from any potential “blood money” payment that could be negotiated after the murder trial under the Saudi justice system.

While ruling out a “settlement,” the statement did not, however, explicitly deny receiving the compensation.

“Acts of wisdom and generosity arise from high morals and humanity and are not an admission of guilt or error. We were raised to be grateful for favours and not reject them,’’ the family said in the statement.

The Kashoggi family, however, could not be immediately reached for further comments on the matter.

Eleven suspects are on trial for last year’s murder of Kashoggi, which the CIA and some Western governments believe was ordered by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The authorities have continued to deny Salman’s role or knowledge of the killing, which sparked an international outcry and limited sanctions by Western allies.

  • FG inaugurates committee to review National Policy on Albinism

The Federal Government has inaugurated the technical committee for the review of the National Policy on Albinism.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, inaugurated the committee on Wednesday in Abuja.

Adamu, who was represented by Mr Sonny Echono, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, said the review of the policy was necessary because of the emerging issues and challenges confronting the albinism community in Nigeria.

According to him, the issues need to be addressed and the review of the policy will facilitate improved lives of persons with albinism through access to social services such as education, healthcare and employment.

He added that it would also reduce stigma, discrimination and ensure the inclusion of persons with albinism into the socio-economic development of the country.

Adamu explained that the ministry had resolved to help those living with disability in one way or the other including ensuring albinos get the real sense of existence without discrimination.

He said the mandate of the policy would be expanded as it was ready to invite other stakeholders to look critically into the challenges of the group.

“The 14-man committee that has been constituted is saddled with reviewing the existing policy to conform to international best practices with emerging issues.

“It will ensure that all critical stakeholders are carried along to close the gap on issues relating to albinism and disability.

“It will also address the issues of non-implementation of policies and as well present a workable framework that will capture the current needs of persons with albinism,” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Albino Foundation, Mr Jake Epelle, said the major issues disturbing albinism should be addressed by the government.

Epelle noted that Nigerians with Albinism would no longer be victims of social stigma and inequalities.

This, according to him, is with the help of the United Nations and critical stakeholders who are focused on empowering persons with albinism as well as educating the society on issues relating to albinism.
