  • We’ve humbled Egypt in Ghana, says Ayanwale

The cocky attitude of the Egyptians has been curtailed at the ongoing ITTF Africa Junior and Cadet Championship holding in Accra, Ghana after they suffered back-to-back defeat against Nigeria in the U-21 and junior boys’ events of the competition.

From their arrival in Accra, it was obvious that the Egyptians wanted to suppress all the teams with their attitude on and off the table. Even their coaches were carrying themselves as if they have come again to cart away all the gold medals at stake.

But they received the first shock when they were beaten 3-2 in the U-21 semifinal by Nigeria on Tuesday, April 9 and this did not stop them from exhibiting arrogance.

As if that was not enough it was Nigeria again that jolted them in the final of the boys’ junior and this time around it was a 3-0 bashing in the final on Wednesday April 10. This finally humbled the Egyptians who now walked with their head bowed in Accra.

An elated Nigeria’s Jamiu Ayanwale said: “When the Egyptians arrived in Ghana, they were just doing as if they have come to beat everybody. They were so arrogant and even in matches, they were so aggressive. But after we beat them twice in the last 24 hours, they have been humbled and they now greet everybody with respect. But we are still waiting for them in the singles because they are still determined to pay us back in the singles. We will not be carried away by our victories as we will continue to raise our game in every match.”

The southpaw Ayanwale believes the win against the highly-rated Egyptians has boosted their confidence in the competition as they are aiming to dominate the singles and doubles events which serve off today April 11 at the Sports Emporium in Accra.

  • Group faults Min. of Education committee report on sodomy in Kuje School

The Child Protection Network (CPN), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO), has described the investigation of sodomy, cannibalism, and substance abuse at the school of the deaf in Kuje, by the committee inaugurated by the Minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, as unacceptable.

The CSO which expressed its concern said that the committee dismissed all allegations without proffering lasting solutions that could protect children in residential facilities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, the Coordinator of CPN, FCT Chapter, Mr. Olorunfemi Olusegun, said that “The committee inaugurated by the Honorable Minister of Education in its report published in the Vanguards  News  Papers  of  the  27th March  2019,  dismissed  all  allegations  without  proffering lasting  solutions  that  could  protect  children  in  residential facilities  across  the  FCT.

“Of great concern to us was one of the reasons given by the committee for its conclusion, which was said to be non-appearance of the victim and the petitioner.

“In a case as sensitive and traumatic as this, a victim is within his/or right to choose not to make an appearance.

“Rather than dismissing the allegation, the committee should have probed further to see if there are other evidence to prove these allegations of sexual abuse, cannibalism, sucking of human blood and existence of a cult in Kuje area before coming to their conclusion.”

It would be recalled the earlier in the year, there was tension at the School for the Deaf and Dumb in the Kuje area of the FCT, Abuja, as suspected occultists were said to have invaded the school premises and allegedly molested some pupils.

The story gained public attention when the parent of a six-year-old pupil of the school first raised the alarm after she reportedly noticed signs of abuse on her child.

Olusegun further added: “Rather than dwelling on the implication of the victim going public after they felt justice was coming too slow when the case was initially reported to the school  and  the  ministry  of  education;  this  situation  should  rather  be  turned  positive  by strengthening child safeguarding policy in the educational sector especially in boarding houses across the FCT.

“In addition, it is unacceptable that the principles of confidentiality, anonymity, and respect for the dignity of the victims were not upheld.”

He also expressed concerns regarding the demolition of the Divine Wound of Jesus Orphanage Home in Kubwa, saying that the care, protection, and welfare of children.

According to him, “The case of the demolition of the Divine Wound of Jesus Orphanage Home Kubwa, as the children watched is regrettable.

“This action by the Federal Capital Development Authority was insensitive and a breach to the rights of the child especially their right to protection and survival.

“We believe that  the  abuse  of  any  child  under  any  circumstances  is  reprehensible and  no organization, schools especially, is immune to this scourge.

“Hence, we must do everything within our power to encourage openness and take decisive action that could deter future occurrence.”

CPN therefore urged the government to: Provide robust psychosocial support to the children in both incidents stated above; resuscitate or establish child safeguarding mechanisms in all residential institutions and boarding houses across the FCT; commence the implementation of the  National  inclusive  education  policy; evacuate the children at the Divine Wounds of Christ Orphanage by the Social Development Secretariat to a more appropriate and conducive home or shelter,  including  proper  accountability  of  every  child  in  the  home  as  at  the  time  the orphanage was demolished; and  provide adequate funding  for  the  Social  development  secretariat  to  be  able  to provide  adequate  supervisory support  and  monitoring  of  all  orphanages including ensuring that they operate within the provisions of the law.

An Igbosere High Court in Lagos on Wednesday remanded in prison custody a Togolese cook, Sunday Adefonou Anani, charged with the murder of the Chief Executive Officer of Credit Switch Limited, Chief Opeyemi Bademosi.

Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile made the order following Anani’s arraignment by the Lagos State Government on a two-count charge of murder and armed robbery.

Before the charge was read, his counsel, the Director of the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) Adenrera Adeyemi, informed the court that Anani did not understand the English language.

Adeyemi, who appeared in court with J.I. Osagiede I.O. Bashua and Eniola Disu, applied for the services of a French-English language interpreter.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile upheld her application and directed that one be provided.

The charge, prepared by the prosecutor, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Titilayo Shitta-Bey, was then read and interpreted to Anani.

It alleged that Anani, 22, committed the offences last October 31, at Bademosi’s Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos residence.

He allegedly stabbed Bademosi, 67, to death with a knife and stole his valuables, including the deceased’s phone.

According to Shitta-Bey, the offences contravened Sections 223 and 297 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Anani pleaded not guilty, following which the judge remanded him in prison custody.

The DPP also informed the court that the prosecution had 17 witnesses in the case.

Adeyemi then applied that the court should direct the prosecution to provide the defence with complete proof of evidence, to enable the defence prepare its case.

The court upheld her application and adjourned till May 21, for trial.

Last November 11, the Lagos State Police Command, published the result of its investigation of the case.

Its spokesman, Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent, said: “On October 31, three days after assuming duty, the suspect, with the intention to rob the deceased, made his way to his boss’ bedroom through the kitchen to the lobby and then to the room, which was the scene of the crime, when he observed that the woman of the house, Mrs. Ebunola Bademosi, had left home for a transaction in a neighbourhood bank.

“According to the suspect, when he got to Bademosi’s room and met him on the bed, he said, ‘Chief, I am not here to kill you.’

“Bademosi asked him, ‘What do you want?’ and he replied ‘money.’

“Bademosi said he had no money in the house. At this point, the suspect said he tied him up with a cloth and put him on the floor.

“He went further to say that Bademosi, while still on the floor, kicked him, causing the knife he tucked inside his pants to fall off.

“He added that Bademosi crawled to pick the knife, but he (the suspect) was faster, and that, as he struggled with him, the knife accidentally pierced Bademosi.

“He said that while exiting the room, Bademosi took the knife to stab him, so he kicked him and he fell down.

“He then took the knife and stabbed him twice on the chest, which added to three knife stabs.

“When he was done killing the man, he entered his bathroom and threw away his apron already stained with blood and the kitchen knife used as murder weapon.

“He, thereafter, heard a knock on the kitchen door, and, sensing it must be the deceased’s wife, he ran out of the room and exited from the sitting room door.

“He was confronted by the guard at the gate, one Nura Mamudu, who asked him where he was hurrying to and he replied that ‘madam sent me on an errand.’

“Finding himself in the street, he came across men loading cement into a truck. He assisted them and they rewarded him with a lift to Ondo State and N500 given to him by the truck driver in appreciation.”
