  • 7 interesting facts about Florence Ajimobi at 60

    One look at Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, wife of Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, brings warmth to the heart and rightly so.

    She is a woman with unique qualities and impeccable character worthy of emulation. As she celebrates her 60th birthday today, these are seven things noteworthy about her.

    1. Although she was born in Benin City on the 5th of April 1959, she is of mixed ancestry. She hails from the renowned Hajaig family of Lebanon and grew up in Ibadan in Oyo state.

    2. She possesses a degree in Secretarial Studies and Management from The Polytechnic Ibadan as well as a Doctoral degree in a management science. She was on Monday 1st of April 2019 inducted as a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Resources Management and Politics (CIPRMP) based in Ghana.

    3. She is the biological mother of five; four daughters and a son. In 2012, she adopted twin boys, Oluwaseyifunmi and Oluwaseunfunmi making her a mother of seven.

    4. She is the Yèyé Ààré of Ibaanland. This title was conferred on her on the 16th of December 2016 by Oba Saliu Adetunji, the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

    5. She is passionate about humanity. Florence Ajimobi is the founder of several humanitarian projects such as Access to Basic medical Care (ABC) foundation, Ajumose Food Basket, Educate A Rural Child project among many others.

    6. She is also a philanthropist. She has donated a fully equipped ICT center to Ajayi Crowther University and is known for donating gift items and cash particularly to orphanages within Oyo state.

    7. Her desire is to become a pastor at 60. She stated this wish at the August edition of Women Intercessory Network Prayer Rally in 2017. As she clocks 60 today, we do hope her wish comes true.

  • We’re losing great men difficult to replace – Obiano

    Anambra state governor Chief Willie Obiano has expressed worry over steady loss of irreplaceable great men in the country and the state in particular.

    Obiano made the observation on Friday in Nnewi, Anambra state, at the occasion of the day of tribute for the former President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife.

    The governor, who spoke through his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, said people of the state should be more concerned with legacies they bequeath to the younger generation.

    He said: “My concern, especially for our dear state is that we keep on losing men of stature, men of integrity, character. Yet nobody is replacing them.

    “Who are the young men that will take over from these great men? I’m yet to see them. This is a wake -up call for all of us.

    “Life is not all about making money, getting married and raising children. We must stand up for something.

    “Let’s all begin to think of how to better our society through our characters and daily dealings with people. Let’s begin to live by example.

    “Legacy of a man is not his wealth, but what he contributed to humanity.”

    He described the late elder statesman as one who stood for something, little wonder the large number of great men and women that graced the occasion.

    While praying for God’s consolation for the family, Obiano challenged his son, Ikedife Jnr to be courageous to step into the late father’s shoes by upholding truth and peace which he represented.

    Wife of former Biafra warlord, Amb. Bianca Ojukwu canvassed for immortalisation of the late elder statesman.

    She said it has always been an issue on how to immortalise great men, especially of Igbo nation.

    “I think individuals themselves, organisations, institutions should sit down and think of enduring monument for such great men.

    “Such monument should not just be in making statutes to remember the dead, but to set up projects that show his philosophies, ideologies and all the things he believed in life where they are discussed, expoused, promoted and investigated,” she said.

    Ojukwu, former Ambassador to Spain, described him as extraordinary man who she spent time with in the company of her late husband.

    “He’s a true Igbo man who advanced warfare the course of igbo nation. He was always there to fight for their rights,’” she added.

    Minister for Science and technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, described late Ikedife as a special gift to the Igbos who knew the power of love.

    He said it was the understanding of the virtue as the strongest force that made him offer selfless service, which made him see goodness in others.

    Other dignitaries that graced the occasion included, first republic Aviation Minister, Mbazuruike Amechi; Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Peter Obi; President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Sen. Andy Uba, among others.

  • Okorocha inaugurates boards, parastatals

    Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha on Friday inaugurated members of 38 Boards and parastatals, few weeks to the end of his administration.

    The Imo governor who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Mark Uchendu, allayed the fears of members of the Board over possible dissolution by the incoming government.

    He said that the tenure of the offices of the Board members is clearly stated in the different laws establishing them, assuring that it cannot be dissolved until the expiration of the time.

    He urged them to deploy their wealth of experience to ensure that they bring the desired results in their respective Boards and parastatals.

    The governor also explained that the inauguration of the Boards which were constituted early January was delayed by the general elections.

    Responding on behalf of the Board members, Hon Daniel Nwafor, commended the governor for the honour, while describing it as a call to duty.

  • Court remands man for stabbing friend to death

    An Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday ordered that a 51-year-old man, Rasaki Banjo be remanded in prison for allegedly stabbing his friend to death with a broken bottle.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.O Salawu, remanded Banjo in Ikoyi Prison and ordered that the case file be sent to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

    Salawu adjourned the case until May 6.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Maria Dauda told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 24 at 8 p.m. at No. 3, Babayemi St., Oworonshoki, Lagos.

    Dauda alleged that the defendant stabbed his friend Enitan Apangbon, 45, on his neck with a broken bottle during a fight.

    According to the prosecutor, the offence contravened the provisions of Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 223 stipulates death sentence for offenders.

  • Group seeks compensation for Johnson, NSCDC staff, others

    The Concerned Nigerians group has asked the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to compensate families of those killed by police officers.

    Two Nigerians; Kolade Johnson was shot by a policeman in Lagos, while a staff of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corp, Ogah Jumbo was allegedly beaten to death by policemen in Nyanya area of Abuja.

    The group made their stance known in Abuja on Friday during a protest to the Force Headquarters to demand justice.

    Shortly after the Protesters assembled, the Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Adamu invited members of the group to his office for a chat.

    Speaking on why they were protesting, the Convener of the group, Deji Adeyanju said the police leadership needs to purge itself of bad eggs.

    Adeyanju also said the misconduct of some officers was due to poor funding.

    He said: “In the recent time, Kolade Johnson, a staff of NSCDC and several others have been killed during an engagement with the Police. We feel there is need for Police authority to take more steps in the hygiene of officers and men of the Force.

    “We believe some of the misconduct witnessed is due to the fact that the Police is underfunded. If they are well funded, we believe money would be made available to purchase equipment that don’t necessarily have to be deadly.

    “We believe proper funding will prevent friction and make them discharge their duties effectively.

    “We are also seeking compensation for the families of Johnson, the NSCDC staff and so many others that have been killed as a result of Police carelessness,” Adeyanju said.

    Responding to their request, the IGP said: “I invited you in to know the problems. We are citizens of this country and the Nigeria Police Force is for all. We were established to serve the society and so we find it necessary to listen to you.

    “Frictions arise when there are gaps in communication. Listening to you like we just did will make us better informed and it will help us avoid friction.”

  • Breaking: IGP launches Operation Puff-Arder to curb kidnapping

    The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Mohammed Adamu has launched Operation Puff-Arder to curb the rate of kidnapping.

    The operation was launched to tackle the increasing rate of kidnapping along Abuja-Kaduna highway and neighbouring communities.

    The Police chief while launching the operation at the Divisional Police Headquarters Katari in Kaduna State on Friday also disclosed that the operation will be extended to Kogi, Niger, Zamfara and Katsina States.

    The IG said the operation was in compliance with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari that its operational strategies be strategized.

    Adamu, who said criminals were not spirit, sought the support of traditional rulers and others to fish them out and rid the highway of kidnappers and other criminals.

  • Breaking: Suspended CJN, Onnoghen resigns

    The suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen has resigned from office.

    A senior lawyer in suspended CJN’s defence team in his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) told The Nation that Onnoghen put in a resignation letter on Thursday, which he sent to the office of President Muhammadu Buhari.

    “I spoke with him a moment and he confirmed that he has voluntarily resigned. He said he did that yesterday,” the source said.‎

    Efforts to get a formal confirmation or denial from the Supreme Court and Onnoghen’s spokeman, Awassam Bassey has been unsuccessful.

    Bassey failed to pick calls to his mobile telephone.

  • Chioma Akpotha, Toyin Abraham, others for new movie, ‘Street Kid’

    Talented Nollywood stars, Chioma Akpotha, Toyin Abrahim, Kalu Ikeagwu and others have teamed up for a new movie, `Street Kid.’

    The story is about history of how a backstreet child, who was forced into hawking for subsistence by his step mother, helped a rich kid win a national schools spelling competition using Nigerian languages.

    ‘Street Kid’ also features Jibola Dabo, Racheal Oniga, Patrick Doyle, Femi Durojaye; introducing Joshua Ani as the street kid and Kenneth Enweremadu as the rich kid amongst others.

    The movie had already received the endorsement of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II.

    Abraham and Akpotha had earlier teamed up for 2018 blockbuster, ‘The Ghost and the Tout.’

    Both actresses are leading some Nollywood stars for ‘Street Kid.’

    The movie was produced by Wale Muraina and directed by Tony Dudu.

    According to Muraina ‘Street Kid’ is scheduled for cinema release on May 24, 2019.

  • Finance, DMO approve N195bn to exporters for EEG settlement

    The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) disclosed at the weekend that the Export Expansion Grant (EEG) is being resuscitated as the minister of Finance has directed the Debt Management Office for settlement of the EEG debts.

    The debt is covering claims back log of 10 years from 2007 to 20016 for 270 companies with the total value of one hundred and ninety five billion, eighty nine million, two hundred and thirty four thousand, eight hundred and eighty naira, and sixty four kobo (N195,080,234,808.64).

    The Executive Director, CEO, Nigeria Export Promotion Council NEPC, Olusegun Awolowo, disclosed these at the stakeholders forum on the framework for the issuance of Promissory Notes for the settlement of outstanding Export Expansion Grant claims 2007-2019, stating that this will bring succor to the export succor in particular and the economy in general.

     He added that there is also positive signal from the National Assembly as it will soon pass the second batch of approval for the remaining 39 companies with a total N124bn.

    According to him, the settlement of this inherited debt by the government will pave way for the revival of the non-oil export sector of the economy.

    It will in no small measure enable financial institutions inject funds for further export activities, generate more foreign exchange as well as employment for the teeming youths of the country.

    “Statistics from the pre-shipment inspection agents and the National Bureau of Statistics analyzed by the council showed that, the country’s export earnings for 2017 and 2018 experienced an upward trend.

    “There was a growth of 48.43% from $1.204 billion in 2016 to $1.787 billion in 2017, it further went up by 27.22% equivalent to $2.274 billion in 2018.

    “It is our sincere believe that exports for 2019 will grow by about 40 percent in view of the settlement of the exporter’s debt through the promissory note programme.”

    Awolowo said in line with government policy on the Ease of Doing Business and to compliment these efforts, the council has developed an online, real time portal for the processing and management of the EEG claims. The online platform will provide opportunity for all stakeholders, processing government agencies, auditors of the scheme, exporters and other relevant stakeholders to submit, review and access information regarding the processing of claims.
