  • EdoJobs, Curators University train more Edo youths on data science

    In an effort to groom programmers and techpreneurs in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki’s skills development platform, EdoJobs, has partnered with Curators University to train more youths in Edo State on data science at the Edo Innovation Hub.

    Senior Special Assistant to Edo State Governor on Job Creation and Skills Development and Head, EdoJobs, Mrs Ukinebo Dare, disclosed this in a chat with journalists, noting that the training is in line with the governor’s pledge to create 200,000 jobs in the state.

    The training programme would be for the second batch of trainees, as a batch had earlier been trained to deploy data science and machine learning skills in solving societal problems. Members of that batch participated in the National Breast Cancer Hackathon organised by Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria and Access Bank and clinched the top two spots.

    Speaking on the training for the second batch, Mrs Dare said the state government is confident that the 5-day intensive training programme would groom a new set of innovators who would provide solutions to local problems in the state.

    According to her, “We are partnering with Curators University to train more youths on data science. The training will be for five days. This will give them the opportunity to learn how to deploy data in solving problems. Those expected at the training include university graduates, undergraduates or school leavers, who are interested in data science. The training will hold at the Edo Innovation Hub.”

    She noted that as the world continues to become accustomed to new technologies, the need for data scientists would increase as they help others understand information better.

    She said, “We are excited with the results we are getting from the different training ongoing at the Hub. We want to assure those interested in this training that they will get the best of practical and theoretical training in data science. It is open to those studying any course, aside computer scientists or economists from the universities.”

  • Senate presidency: Kano senators endorse Lawan

    The ambition of Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, to become Senate President in the 9th National Assembly has received a boost as three Senators from Kano state on Friday endorsed his candidacy.

    The three Senators from Kano Barau Jubrin, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya and Malam Ibrahim Shekrau threw their weight behind Senator Ahmed Lawan’s candidacy.

    They described him as eminently qualified to occupy the exalted seat going by international parliamentary best practices.

    Senator Barau Jubrin, who is the secretary of Ahmed Lawan Campaign Organisation, led other members of the campaign train to the residence of Senator-elect, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau who also endorsed Lawan.

    Among those who visited Kano with the Senate Leader include Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North) chairman, Ahmed Lawan Campaign Organisation; Senator Danladi Sankara, who is the Senator-elect for Jigawa North-West Senatorial District; Senator Bello Maudiya (Katsina South); Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan (Lagos West); Senator Degi-Eremienyo (Bayelsa East) and Senator Lekan Mustapha (Ogun East).

     Jubrin said: “The National Assembly leadership is elected based on international parliamentary best practices.

    “In every parliament, leaders are elected based on ranking, based on experience and once a parliament goes by election and the party that gets the majority in that election produces the leader, and in this case, the majority leader in such a parliament automatically becomes the Senate President or the Speakers, as the case may be.

     “Now, Ahmed Lawan is the current leader and he will be the oldest Senator, the most ranked Senator in the 9th Senate.

    “He was a two-time members of House of Representatives and four-time member of the Senate.

    “So, he is the most experienced and most ripe for the job of the Senate presidency going by intentional parliamentary best practices.”

    Shekarau said: “I am so highly honoured to be visited by this high-powered delegation led by the leader of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Lawan.

    “I am now a Senator-elect and I pray the 9th National Assembly will be a very peaceful and smooth one, where we will all join hands together to move Nigeria forward.

    “I also congratulate you for aspiring to lead the National Assembly. It is one thing to be there, it is another thing to be identified as a leader.

    “It is a challenge and we are all proud of the fact the it is one of those that we have known before that is aspiring to lead the National Assembly.

    “I believe you have all what it takes to lead the National Assembly. We are already your canvassers whether you are around or not, you need not to be out to it, or recruit us to do it. We understand where need to go and who needs to have the responsibility to lead us.

    “It is not that you a super-person among all the rest, but one thing is that you are the first among all the equals and I believe that with all the other experienced people around, you will be able to give Nigeria, a Senate that everybody will be very proud of.”

    Lawan said they were in Kano to solicit for the support of Shekarau, whose wealth of experience he said is much needed to move the 9th Senate forward.

    In a chat with reporters, Adeola explained further why Senator Ahmed Lawan should be elected as the new Senate President of the 9th Assembly.

    According to him: “Senator Ahmed Lawan has been an experienced lawmaker. He has been around since 1999.

    “He is a very distinguished Nigerian, with wealth of experience in the business of lawmaking.

    “Senator Lawan has over the years distinguished himself as a Nigerian who is detribalized, who believes in the principles of fairness and equity, and fair-play.

    “He is one Nigerian that holds the sanctity of this nation in a very high esteem. Aside that, Senator Lawan is the current leader of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; and in accordance with international parliamentary best practices, as it is obtained in other parts of the world, when you have the leader of the National Assembly, whether in the House of Representatives or the Senate, it is only right for him to transit when his party is the majority party.”

  • Common Tech mistakes limiting your business potentials

    Your business has big plans for now and the future. You are betting big on technology to take your business to the next level. Unknown to you, it is this same technology that is hindering and preventing your business from attaining its full potential. The interesting thing here is that some of the most common tech mistakes that businesses make are also the easiest to fix. Here are some tech mistakes that are hindering the growth of your business.

    You think you’re smarter than robots

    More businesses every day are jumping on the artificial intelligence bandwagon, and for good reason. AI can help optimize business operations, sift through huge amounts of customer data, and capture information that can help you make better decisions. The robotic takeover of the manual, repetitive tasks of businesses is inevitable. You can use this development to your advantage, or you can attempt to fight off the robot revolution.

    A business like Jumia, Nigeria’s no 1 shopping destination is already taking advantage of the benefits of AI with its chatbot tagged Jumia Bot. The Jumia Bot is the pocket assistant that helps you order food when you are hungry, book a flight or hotel when you want to travel and also assist with your shopping.

    Weak login password(s)

    In this era of online security consciousness and hackers looking for ways to steal information, using weak passwords for your login can put your business in great risk especially if you have customer information on your database. There’s no excuse for not having a more secure login process. You can use two-factor authentication which requires you to use a password to log in as usual, but goes one step further and forces you to confirm the login via a text message or phone call.

    Not recognizing that technology evolves

    Technology is highly dynamic. This means that training within a company must continually evolve. If you don’t focus on keeping up, your business will be left behind. The only way to stay on the cutting edge of technological evolution is to routinely stay updated. Give yourself and your staff as much training as possible, not only on new technologies but on systems currently in use as well. When you accept that you and your business will be lifelong tech learners, you’ll stay one step ahead of the pack.

    No reliable backup

    You should never assume that your backup system is working properly. At least, once each month you should back up a test directory, erase it, and then do a test restore. This will ensure that your backup device is working, but you also need to make sure that the proper data is being backed up.

    Buying cheap tech equipment

    I.T. will cost you a lot of money. In fact, depending on the industry you’re in, tech could be your biggest investment. Cheap, outdated and otherwise unsuitable tech arrangements can cripple your business and cost business owners way more in time, trouble and overall inefficiency. Instead of looking for the least expensive solution, determine what you’re going to need, and then look for the best deals on quality hardware and software.

  • ‘Why men die earlier than women’

    A World Health Organisation (WHO) report says men are more likely to die earlier than women due to uneven access to health services.

    According to “2019 World Health Statistics” published on the WHO website on Thursday, the trend is similar in low and high-income countries as men often seek health care services less than women.

    The health statistics, which according to the report, was disaggregated by sex for the first time, stated that women outlived men everywhere in the world particularly in wealthy countries.

    The report said that where men and women faced the same disease, men often seek health care less than women.

    It said that only by intensifiying efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) can countries close this health gap and improve the health and wellbeing of everyone.

    “Women outlive men everywhere in the world particularly in wealthy countries and the World Health Statistics 2019 disaggregated by sex for the first time explains why.

    “Attitudes to healthcare differ. Where men and women face the same disease, men often seek health care less than women.

    “In countries with generalised HIV epidemics for example, men are less likely than women to take an HIV test, less likely to access antiretroviral therapy and more likely to die of AIDS-related illnesses than women.

    “Similarly, male Tuberculosis (TB) patients appear to be less likely to seek care than female TB patients.

    “Where women can access health services, maternal deaths decrease thereby lengthening women’s life expectancy.

    Read also: World Health Day: WHO says depression affects 322m people worldwide

    “In many circumstances, men access health care less than women. The report also highlights the difference in causes of death between men and women.

    “Some are biological, some influenced by environmental and societal factors while some are impacted by availability of and uptake of health services,” the report said.

    It said that of the 40 leading causes of death globally, 33 causes contribute more to reduced life expectancy in men than in women.

    The report stated that in 2016, the probability of a 30-year-old dying from a non-communicable disease before 70 years of age was 44 per cent higher in men than women.

    According to the report, global suicide mortality rates are 75 per cent higher in men than in women in 2016.

    The report revealed that death rates from road injury were more than twice as high in men than in women from age 15 adding that mortality rates due to homicide were also four times higher in men than in women.

    The report quoted Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, as saying that breaking down data by age, sex and income group was vital to understanding who was being left behind and why.

    Ghebreyesus said that behind every number in the World Health Statistics was a person, a family, a community or a nation.

    He said that the task of the organisation was therefore to use the data to make evidence-based policy decisions that would move everyone closer to a healthier, safer and fairer world.

    “The gap between men’s and women’s life expectancy is narrowest where women lack access to health services.

    “In low-income countries, where services are scarcer, one in 41 women die from a maternal cause, compared with one in 3,300 in high-income countries.

    “In more than 90 per cent of low-income countries, there are fewer than four nursing and midwifery personnel per 1000 people.

    “The report was published to coincide with World Health Day commemorated on April 7 yearly.

    “This year, the celebration focuses on primary health care as the foundation of UHC; the new WHO statistics highlight the need to improve access to primary health care worldwide and to increase uptake.

    “One of WHO’s triple billion goals is for one billion more people to have UHC by 2023.

    “This means improving access to services especially at community level and making sure those services are accessible, affordable, and effective for everyone regardless of their gender,” the director general said.

    Also, Dr Samira Asma, the WHO Assistant Director General for Data, Analytics and Delivery, said that these statistics underscored the need to prioritise primary health care urgently to effectively manage noncommunicable diseases and to curb risk factors.

    Asma explained that for instance, achieving something as simple as controlling blood pressure was just not happening on the scale needed and tobacco use remained a leading cause of premature death.

    She said however, that irrespective of the challenges, life expectancy has improved since 2000.

    The director general said that between 2000 and 2016, global life-expectancy at birth increased by 5.5 years which was from 66.5 to 72.0 years.

    “Healthy life expectancy at birth which is the number of years one can expect to live in full health has increased from 58.5 years in 2000 to 63.3 years in 2016.

    “Life expectancy remains strongly affected by income; in low-income countries, life expectancy is 18.1 years lower than in high-income countries. One child in every 14 born in a low-income country will die before their fifth birthday,” Asma said.

    She said that the organisation has for the first time published a Global Health Statistics disaggregated by sex.

    Asma said that this new analysis has provided insights into the health and needs of people around the world. (NAN)

  • NJC advises Buhari to okay Tanko Muhammad for CJN

    WITH the recommendation of the National Judicial Council (NJC), the coast seems clear for Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad to mount the saddle as CJN.

    President Muhammadu Buhari is likely to accept the NJC’s recommendation that Justice Muhammad should be CJN, The Nation learnt yesterday.

    But Buhari is said to be weighing whether or not to accept the NJC’s recommendations on the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria ( CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

    Buhari, who had a meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on the issue before flying out to Jordan yesterday, is also said to be seeking legal opinions on the NJC’s decisions.

    The NJC absolved Justice Muhammad of any blame in deferring to the President to be sworn in as the Acting CJN.

    He accepted the appointment, having been presented with an ex parte order of the CCT, which led to Justice Onnoghen’s suspension.

    The Nation learnt that after receiving the NJC’s recommendations, the President elected to seek legal advice on them.

    REad also: NJC advises Buhari to retire Onnoghen over $1.7m cash

    A top government official, who pleaded not to be named because he was not permitted to talk on the matter, said the President was considering:

    • whether or not NJC’s conclusions on findings on Onnoghen did not amount to indictment;
    • if he should accept NJC’s soft-landing decision to retire Justice Onnoghen with full benefits;
    • Onnoghen’s retirement without benefits; and
    • whether the law should run its full course, including the conclusion of Onnoghen’s trial by the Code of Conduct Tribunal and a fresh trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    Buhari is also believed to be thinking of asking NJC to recommend deterrence for Onnoghen or seeking further consultations with the council.

    The President is also said to be planning to seek advice on whether the input of the Senate necessary in retiring Onnoghen?

    The source said: “Since he received the NJC’s recommendations, the President has been thinking of how to manage the situation without rubbishing the anti-corruption agenda of his administration. He has the right to accept or reject the council’s recommendations on Onnoghen.

    “The President is already seeking legal opinion on legal issues  surrounding the NJC’s decisions. He does not want to set a bad precedent in tackling this Onnoghengate”.

    The source confirmed that the President met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He believed Onnoghen’s case and other matters were discussed.

    Responding to a question, the source said: “What NJC decided was a kind of soft-landing for Onnoghen with moral and legal implications.

    “Apart from stepping down, there are concerns about what Onnoghen is really offering as deterrent. Some are saying why can’t the law run its full course?

    “Others are pressurising the government to take advantage of the window created by the NJC to rebuild the ties between the Executive and the Judiciary as a result of Onnoghen’s travails.”

    It was unclear whether or not the President would need the consent of the Senate to retire Onnoghen.

    “This is part of the legal opinion being sought by the President,” a presidency source said, pleading not to be named.

    Section 231 of the 1999 Constitution says: “(1)The appointment of a person to the office of  Chef Justice of Nigeria shall be made by the President on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council subject to confirmation of such appointment by the Senate.

    “(2) The appointment of a person to the office of a Justice of the Supreme Court shall be made by the President on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council subject to confirmation of such appointment by the Senate.

    “(3) A person shall not be qualified to hold the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria or of a Justice of the Supreme Court, unless he is qualified to practise as a legal practitioner in Nigeria and has been so qualified for a period of not less than fifteen years.

    “(4) If the office of Chief Justice of Nigeria is vacant or if the person holding the office is for any reason unable to perform the functions of the office,’ then until a person has been appointed to and has assumed the functions of that office, or until the person holding the office has resumed those functions, the President shall point the most senior Justice of the Supreme Court to perform those functions.

    “(5) Except on the recommendation of the National Judicial  Council, appointment, pursuant to the provisions of subsection (4) of section shall cease to have effect after the expiration of three months from the date of such appointment, and the President shall not reappoint a person whose appointment has lapsed.”

    Part 1 of the Third Schedule to 1999 Constitution says: “The National Judicial Council  shall have power  to:

    • (b) recommend to the President the removal from office of the judicial officers specified in sub-paragraph (a) of this paragraph, and to exercise disciplinary control over such office’s;
    • (c) recommend to the Governors from among the list of persons submitted to it by the State Judicial Service  Commissions persons for appointments to the offices of the Chief Judges of the States and Judges of the High courts of the states, the Grand Kadis and Kadis of the sharia Courts of Appeal of the States and Presidents and Judges of the Customary Courts of Appeal of the States;
    • (d) recommend to the governors the removal from office of the judicial officers specified in sub-paragraph (c) of this paragraph, and to exercise disciplinary control over such officers;
    • (e) collect, control and disburse all moneys, capital and recurrent, for the judiciary;
    • (f) advise the President and governors or any matter pertaining to the judiciary as may be referred to the Council by the President or the covernors;
    • (g) appoint, dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over member and staff of the Council;
    • (h) control and disburse all monies, capital and recurrent. for the services of the Council; and
    • (i) deal with all other matters relating to broad issues of policy and administration.

    Meanwhile, the NJC has recommended the confirmation of Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria.

    Another source said: “The council actually did not find him culpable of infractions. He actually did not even want to be inaugurated as the Acting CJN until there was evidence of an ex-parte order from the CCT on Justice Onnoghen’s suspension.

    “As the next in-command, the NJC said he should take over from the CJN.”

    When contacted, a source in NJC said: “In line with Section 26 of the Judicial Discipline Regulations of 2017, the council has reached out to all those affected by its decisions.

    Section 26 says: “The decision taken in regulation 25 of these Regulations shall be notified to the following persons: (a)The subject of the decision; (b)The Complainant and (c) The relevant Head of Court

    “Upon a request made to the Council, the decision may be notified to any other person. The grant or refusal of such request is in the absolute discretion of the Council.”

  • Tokyo 2020 Olympics must reflect in 2019 budget, says Igali

    President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Hon Daniel Igali says the budget for the preparation of athletes for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan must be included in the 2019 budget if the country hopes to have a good participation in the event.

    Igali said this in a chat with NationSport on Wednesday night on arrival from Tunisia, where Nigerian wrestlers participated at 2019 African Senior Wrestling Championships.

    “The issues of funds have almost become like a broken record, it is something that happens with, not just wrestling, but a lot of amateur sports and it has to do with budgeting. We must have proactive budgeting. We have the Olympics next year and we cannot have a budget that will be passed in June next year, the moment we do that, we are already prepared to fail at the Olympics.

    “The Olympic budget next year should be encapsulated in this year’s budget. The preparations; all the qualification tournaments, everything to ensure a successful outing in Japan and medal-worthy performances put up by the athletes, have to be achieved this year.

    “So if we don’t do that, we are going to continue to experience the same thing we have experienced. It was a tough one for us. But I must commend the Minister of Sports and the permanent secretary that played their roles to ensure that we had some tickets before we left. Also, friends and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation for running around to ensure that we are able to go and come back. Hopefully, we can start looking around to settle some of the debts now.”

    Team Nigeria won a total of 13 medals (6 gold, 2 silver and 5 bronze) at the championships in Tunisia and Igali commended the wrestlers for making the country proud.

    “I think it was the doggedness of the athletes, the instructions from the coaches, the desire and fire in the athletes to represent their country and to represent it well. I’m really very proud of my athletes and coaches for this enormous feat that we achieved in Hammamet, Tunisia.

    “The Tunisians have a very good female team and they were poised to come first, especially on home soil. So, it was a battle and my athletes were really dogged and wanted it bad enough. In spite of the preparations we had, this Nigerian spirit is something else. They get somewhere and in the heat of the moment, they keep firing from all cylinders. I can’t be more proud than this and I want to give them all the kudos, they really did well,” Igali told NationSport.
