Former PDP chairman hails affirmation of Odeifa’s expulsion

Former Ebonyi chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and 2024 senatorial candidate, Silas Joseph Onu, has welcomed the expulsion of the party’s National Vice Chairman, South East Zone, Ali Odefa.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, Tuesday affirmed the expulsion of the embattled Odefa

The judgment affirmed the decision of his Ward Executive Committee to expel him for anti-party activities after he was earlier suspended.

Onu alleged Odefa is believed working for Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde, covering his interest in the region ahead of his rumoured  2027 presidential bid.

Silas Onu, a lawyer said: “His expulsion has been long overdue and having it affirmed today is a great news for the PDP. We await to see how the Oyo Governor will now overrule the Federal High Court decision, seeing that he had encouraged the disobedience of other” judgments in the past.”

PDP condemns attack on Edo community

Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the attack on the people of Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government by gunmen, leading to the murder of two farmers.

In a statement by Chris Nehikhare, publicity secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, the party expressed disappointment over the killing of Batemue Philip Ebo and Christopher Bello.

It was gathered that Ebo and Bello were attacked and killed on their way to their farms.

The statement said: “We are deeply saddened by the heinous attack on the people of Okpekpe community in Etsako East Local Government by suspected herdsmen, which led to the gruesome murder of two innocent citizens.

“We condemn this dastardly act in the strongest terms and send our heartfelt condolences to their families, loved ones and the entire community during this difficult time,” Nehikhare said.

The party urged Governor Monday Okpebholo to take urgent and decisive steps to check the situation before it degenerates out of control.

You can’t return to office, PDP tells reinstated Osun Chairmen, Councillors

Local Government Chairmen and Councillors in Osun state must be stopped from returning to their offices, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said.

In a statement by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba on behalf of what he described as ‘national leadership  of PDP’, the likelihood of seeing them restored to their offices is very dim, telling them to ‘perish the thought’.

“The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cautions the sacked Osun State Local Government Chairmen and Councilors to perish the thought of forcing themselves back into office as such will amount to a futile venture with dire consequences,” Ologunagba stated in a statement in Abuja on Monday night.

Expressing the PDP’s conviction that ‘the fate of the ousted Local Government Chairmen and Councilors was sealed’, Ologunagba asserted that a judgment of the Court to Appeal nullified the attempt by former Governor Gboyega Oyetola to make them local government officers through an election.

According to the PDP, the process did not adhere enough to legal provisions governing local government elections in the State.

The PDP also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to incite unrest by disputing the ruling.

It further emphasised that the APC in Osun state must respect the judiciary’s decision and prepare for fresh local government elections as scheduled by the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC).

The PDP called on law enforcement agencies to investigate reports of violence in the state, alleging that APC supporters were involved in recent clashes that led to casualties.

The party also urged the Inspector General of Police to ensure that those responsible for any disturbances in Osun state are held accountable.

Amid the ongoing political tension, the PDP appealed to residents to remain law-abiding and continue supporting Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration.

  • Why PDP BoT chair Wabara should be expelled, by Deputy Youth Leader

Why PDP BoT chair Wabara should be expelled, by Deputy Youth Leader

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) Senator Adolphus Wabara’s effusive praises for Abia Governor Alex Otti reflects serious anti-party disposition for which he should be expelled, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Comrade  Timothy Osadolor has said.

Expressing grave disappointment with PDP youth and elderly members over Wabara’s continuous affection for the Labour Party Governor, Osadolor said Abia chapter was right to have suspended Wabara for the acts.

Wabara was suspended by the Abia chapter of PDP last Tuesday over anti-party activities and praise-singing for the Labour Party Governor. He  engaged in the now-familiar act on Sunday again.

In October last year, the Abia chapter of PDP queried Wabara for endorsing Gov Otti with superlatives within five months of being in office.

Last Sunday,  Wabara stated no one can suspend him from the party for commending good governance, insisting that he would continue to appreciate Governor Otti for his contributions to Abia development.

On Sunday, at the International Conference Center, Umuahia, during the 80th birthday celebration of former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Godswill Emelike Okoro, Wabara acknowledged the visible progress in the state under Governor Otti’s leadership, adding, “even a blind man can see what is happening in Abia!”

Wabara, who jokingly said that they might now move from suspending to expelling him for speaking the truth, added: “Before becoming a PDP card-carrying member, before becoming an NRC card-carrying member in this state, I, Adolphus Nduneweh Wabara, was first and foremost a citizen of Abia.”

He further said Otti, whom some political stakeholders had opposed, is leading the state’s recovery from years of misgovernance.

But Osadolor emphasised that with the special significance of the PDP Board of Trustees as the ‘conscience of the Party’, wabara’s praise-singing is further hurting PDP’s prospects in Abia state.

The PDP Deputy Youth Leader said: “At any fora, he should be the one who champions the cause of PDP and markets it but rather, it has become his stock in trade to praise Alex Otti who belongs to another party, to high heavens because of what he is gaining from Governor Otti, forgetting that his party has a major stake in Abia state.

“After all, before Otti came in during the last elections, Abia state had always been ruled by PDP since 1999, so, one wonder why the swan song for Gov Otti is coming from, if not for his own personal reasons.

“The man (Wabara) has lost  locus to remain as chairman of PDP BoT, those who suspended him may as well expel him; he should not wait to be expelled or asked to leave, he should honourably leave now that he has found pleasure and gratuity in the works of Gov Alex Otti.

“As PDP BoT chairman, he was expected to be chairman in charge of the organ that is the conscience of the PDP, it is most unfortunate for him to be playing this role; it is an irresponsible act and the clear message that he has sent to the leadership and members of the PDP is that he doesn’t take his job too seriously.

“Nigerians know him for who he is; it is very unfortunate and at best, self-serving for him to do what he continues doing; even, members of the PDP BoT should summon Wabara, there is need to invite him to come and explain why he is doing things that bring us to public ridicule, with utterances that are so unbecoming.”

Edo PDP: Why we are confident of victory at tribunal

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, has said the main opposition party would be victorious at the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja, in view of the well-presented petition and experienced witnesses.

He said yesterday in Benin that PDP’s petition to challenge the September 21, 2024 victory of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Monday Okpebholo, was in a class of its own, and different from what Nigerians were accustomed to.

Aziegbemi said: “I am confident that PDP and its governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, will be declared winner of the election by the tribunal, because of the evidence we have presented.

“In the petition, we did not plead financial inducement or ballot box snatching that will be difficult to prove. We focused on over-voting.

“If the law says where the number of votes cast is more than the number of accredited voters, and such is authenticated by the BVAS extract, it means the unit’s result must be cancelled because of over voting. These are things you can place your fingers on and say if it happened and you can prove that it happened, and you have documents to show that it happened, because INEC certified all the documents for us. That is where our confidence stems from. This is why our petition is unique.

“The only witness by Okpebholo at the tribunal’s sitting on Monday admitted that there was over-voting in his Ovia Southwest Local Government of Edo State. We used him to authenticate what we have been saying that there was over-voting in 133 polling units in the local government.’’

Edo PDP chairman urged the teeming members of the party to remain calm and law-abiding, while being confident of victory at the tribunal.

The sitting of the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member tribunal will continue today.

  • Another wake-up call for opposition political parties in Nigeria

Another wake-up call for opposition political parties in Nigeria

The spectacle of a debacle that happened at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national headquarters during the PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) meeting, which took place last week was a show of shame, and a culmination of the crises that have rocked the party for about 2 years, with no end in sight. The “roof-rofo” fisticuff which looked like a scene out of a 2nd grade Nollywood movie was both funny and annoying – what a paradox! This is especially so because the fracas happened at the national headquarters of the PDP during the meeting of what is considered the highest advisory and decision-making body of elders and leaders of the party. So, what should we expect at the state and/ or local government levels?

Many people do not know that I have political experience. As a bit of background about my political antecedents; I was a founding member of the All Peoples Party (APP) in 1998, and I was appointed as the first Information Analyst at the APP National Secretariat, working directly with the National Chairman and the National Secretary (within the National Working Committee). I worked with different Committees including Planning and Organising Committees, Mobilization Committees, National Convention Committee, the APP governorship elections Campaign team for late Engineer Magaji Abdullahi, the APP Governorship Candidate for Kano State in the 1999 Gubernatorial elections, etc. I was given level-1 confidentiality clearance and ran political assignments at the highest level. After the Presidential elections, In the second half of 1999, I followed some of my Principals, to switch affiliation to the PDP along with other party chieftains. In the PDP, I was also privileged to work at top levels with the likes of the late Ibrahim Aminu Saleh, and other party chieftains. One such instance was playing a key role in the emergence of Chief Audu Ogbe as the PDP National Chairman in 2001. Following that development, I became actively involved in partisan politics and undertaking national assignments. In 2005, midway into the second term of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, I decided to revert back fully to my professional career and stepped away from partisan politics.

Having been a member of an opposition political party, as well as the ruling party, I understand the mechanics and dynamics of politics and party administration. Since the time I left politics in 2005, interestingly, today, all our political mentors, leaders, and colleagues from 1998 to date are in all the political parties, APC, PDP, Labour Party or NNPP because the politicians have all spread out. And that tells you the kind of politics we have in Nigeria.

The politics of ideology in Nigeria is still a work in progress. With the way the opposition political leaders and their parties are unraveling, unless something disruptive is done on the part of the opposition, it is highly unlikely that they will make any significant impact in the 2027 elections, i.e. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will most likely have what they call in football, “ a walk over “- in 2027 – easy win. Because, to be honest, what is currently going on in the opposition political parties is a joke. I say with all sense of responsibility, that I am disappointed with the kind of leadership that is provided at the political party levels. I am disappointed with the kind of engagements that are happening across opposition political parties. Selfishness, parochialism, and the pretext of nationalism or patriotism are most times reflected in their actions. And I have said it many times, and with all due respect, that whether it is His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, His Excellency Peter Obi, or His Excellency Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso; all of whom I have profound respect for, cannot effectively lead a country if you cannot manage a political party. For instance, with the ongoing spectacle of a debacle in PDP some days ago, does PDP currently look like a political party that can upstage the APC at the federal or even at the State level? So, the truth is if these political leaders really mean well for Nigeria, then they should have a solid and robust strategy that will unify their political parties, and they should put their differences aside and focus on building internal democracy which will ensure them the unity of purpose and prepare them for the herculean task of winning a highly strategic incumbent, like President Tinubu.

According to former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the APC is enticing some opposition party leaders with money so that they could destabilize their parties. With profound respect, in my opinion, that allegation is laughable. If opposition political parties continue deceiving themselves by saying that it is the APC that is causing problems in their political parties, then that means that the opposition political leaders don’t have the capacity, political sagacity, political acumen, and fluidity to hold their party structures and hold their people together. I also expect that sometimes they should even do the politics of give and take. President Bola Ahmed had to step down his presidential ambition twice, for the long game – That is strategy! But every time Alhaji Atiku loses elections, then everything has to stop, or he will abandon the political party that gave him the ticket. Mr. Peter Obi is also beginning the move in that direction. We must understand our strengths and our weaknesses to effectively utilize opportunities, and ultimately achieve our strategic objectives.

We have a political colossus in the person of President Tinubu as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We can talk and wish him away. We can lament and complain. But unless they put their heads together, like it happened in 2015, as we may recall it was l the APC, i.e. President Bola Tinubu and his political allies that upstage an incumbent President; then all the opposition can organize, will be talk shops. They can only upstage the incumbent President if they put their personal sentiments aside and look at Nigeria as a project.

By the way, let me be clear, that I will not support power going back to the North in 2027. As Nigerians, we agreed to a north-south shift of power in the interest of unity, equity, and justice. Therefore, let us work with that template so that the opposition will start putting a robust strategy, going forward. I am saying this without prejudice to the constitutional right of citizens to aspire for any public office in Nigeria. Essentially, leadership recruitment in Nigeria should be based on character, content capacity, unity, equity, justice, and about what a candidate has to offer Nigeria. Only when opposition political leaders and opposition political parties come together, that there be hope for the opposition to even put the APC on their toes.

Accordingly, my humble “going forward” agenda-setting message to the opposition parties is; “Recognizing your reality is the beginning of success”. Real situational awareness is what guides successful strategic planning and execution in military warfare, business, and also politics. Toxic narratives, social media rantings, and cyberbullying will not lead to success. In essence, the opposition parties need to expand their vision, be more strategic, detailed, focused, determined, and resilient, and ultimately be united about selfish interests to succeed, because performance is measured by results and outcomes and not by events or activities.

One of the indications of how the opposition parties are faring is how the members of the opposition parties in the National Assembly (Senate and House of Representatives) have completely disappeared from their political party structure, headquarters, or scheme of things. In the past few weeks Members of the opposition parties in the National Assembly in the Senate or House of Representatives are already decamping in droves to the APC. I expect some State Governors of the opposition will soon decamp to the APC.

A lot of members of the opposition parties in the National Assembly, no longer associate themselves with the Presidential candidates who should be the rallying point of their party. I expect to hear or see them deferring to those leaders with regard to critical issues of national interests, but that is not happening except in the case of the NNPP, in fairness to them. For those who won elections on the platform of the PDP, I cannot remember the time that I saw most of them in a photoshoot together, talk less of hearing them going to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for advice or guidance. The same situation is the case of those who won on the tide of the Obedient movement, the photo shoots with Mr. Peter Obi are becoming less talk less of constructive engagement with the LP leader.

My parting words for the opposition political figures; United you stand, divided you fragment your votes and make it easy for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to coat into his second term the rhetorical question is, “Will our politicians ever rise above their selfish and parochial interested to actual do the needful?” Your answers are as good as mine.

  • PDP chieftain berates Governors’ Forum for taking sides on national secretary position

PDP chieftain berates Governors’ Forum for taking sides on national secretary position

A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Executive Council, Hon. Umar Abdullahi, has condemned the communiqué issued by the PDP Governors’ Forum expressing support for Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye against Senator Samuel Anyanwu, calling it “inflammatory” and potentially exacerbating the party’s internal crisis.

Meanwhile, a PDP stalwart loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike told The Nation that internal intrigues within the PDP Governors’ Forum had led to the inclusion of the controversial issue in their communiqué, fueling further tensions within the party.

“Our governor from the South East was pushing for it but a vote from another PDP governor from the South West tipped the scale in his favour; the second governor is very keen about coming 2027 presidential primaries and he was never a keen supporter of Anyanwu in the first place.

“Ordinarily, some of the governors prefer that legal opinion be allowed to prevail but others spoke of the need to back one of their own who openly supports Udeh-Okoye; the South West governor would not wish to see Anyanwu preside over preparations for the national convention in December but he could be outflanked by pro-Atiku forces,” the source stated.

In an elaborate response to the PDP Governors’ expression of interest for Hon Udeh-Okoye in Abuja on Sunday, Honourable Umar Abdullahi who is from Nassarawa state asserted that the governors made a very big mistake with the communiqué they signed.

“The use of communiqué in addressing a conflict within the Party is not an appropriate step for such a dignified forum; the Governors are supposed to deploy all internal conflict resolution mechanisms before resorting to public pronouncement.

“The forum holds a place of honour and should discharge their duties in a fatherly manner.

“Again, by disregarding the legal position of the matter and issuing a public statement of such nature, the Governors appear to be exercising authority beyond their constitutional powers; their opinion counts but it cannot override the decision of a court of competent jurisdiction and that of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Party which is a statutory organ of the Party.

“It was understood that, the Board of Trustees (BoT) resolved in their last meeting of January 29, to set up a committee headed by Saminu Turaki, (SAN) to look into the matter and advise the Party appropriately but two days afterwards, the Governors issued a counter-statement in their communiqué, recognizing Udeh Okoye; the decision of the Governors is not an appropriate step towards achieving peace moreso when the appeal is pending in court for determination.

“It is quite unfortunate that the PDP Governors’ Forum decided not to wait for the Fact-finding Committee set up by the PDP Board of Trustees to complete its assignment, before issuing an advisory that has escalated the crisis; the Governors’ Forum could have set up their own independent committee to look into the matter, in the best interest of the Party,” Hon Umar Abdullahi stated.

Going further, he emphasized that against the background of weighty legal issues involved in the contention for the position of PDP National Secretary, the PDP Governors’ Forum made a grave error that warrants urgent and proper correction.

“In the petition to the security agencies, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu alleged that a certain group of persons forged the PDP Constitution/Electoral Guidelines which they used in misleading the court in delivering judgement against him; this is something that should be taken up seriously before anybody can back up the judgement.

“An issue of forgery involving PDP documents is a serious criminal offense which the governors are expected to fight against; a crime of such magnitude is not what the Party should treat with sentiment or levity.

“There is reason for the governors to retrace their actions as critical leaders of the Party and the nation so as to ensure that due diligence is followed in resolving the crises rocking the party; towing the path of the Board of Trustees (BoT) by setting up an independent committee to review the case is the right thing to do, to avoid making someone a victim of mischief or creating an environment for crises,” Hon Umar Abdullahi added.

Enugu PDP begs LP guber candidate Edeoga to return

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu has pleaded with the 2023 Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Enugu State, Barr. Chijioke Edeoga, to return back to the ruling party in the state.

The party also urged Edeoga to return home and use his political force and goodwill to work for the progress of the party and the people of the state.

The state chairman of the PDP, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, made the request Friday when he led key officials of the state executive committee of the party, to visit Edeoga in his residence in Enugu.

Dr. Chukwunweike, who addressed newsmen after the meeting, said, “We’re at the residence of His Excellency, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga. Ever since I assumed office as the state chairman of the PDP in Enugu State, we as the executive have been thinking of how to make PDP formidable once again.

“PDP used to be the only party in Enugu State l. But in the last election, something happened that things didn’t go the way they used to go.

“When I came on board, I discussed with the governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, that we must do everything possible to get all our people back on track. We must do everything possible to see that Enugu State becomes 100 percent PDP once again the way it used to be.

“We took the decision to consult with some of our very key people who have been PDP all along. Number one on the list is the person we’re in his residence, Chijioke Edeoga.

“Edeoga has gone to the House of Representatives under PDP. During our discussion, he told me plainly that he owes a lot to PDP. He’s become a lot because of PDP. He’s been in the state executive council of Enugu State courtesy of the PDP and a lot of other things.

“So, it was painful to me to come and be acting as the PDP chairman without someone like him being in the PDP.

“The governor approved that I should go and talk to him and beg him to come back to PDP because he (the governor) knows that he (Edeoga) is a force to reckon with in Enugu State politics.

“We’ve had a lot of discussions before now. Today, we, myself and key members of the executive of the PDP in Enugu State, have come to consult with him, and he’s okay with our visit. He’s very satisfied with our visit.

“I believe, from what he told us, that we are going to have him back in the party. The only thing is that being somebody who is not standing alone, who has people who are his team members and companions, he feels that it is right that he also consults with them before coming to give us the expected verdict.

“It might not cause him anything (to make his stand known) but it doesn’t augur well for his personality to just tell us, ‘let’s go back to PDP’. But, naturally as a man of honour and integrity, and as a general who controls people, he needs to consult with his people to give us his final expected verdict, which I believe will not be in a long time so that as the battle is beginning to prepare now, we will all go into the battlefield united as one family, which we have always been.

“We know that Enugu State under Dr Peter Mbah will eventually become what PDP used to be. He’s asked us to extend his greetings to the governor. He’s asked us to tell the governor that he has seen the good works.

“We’re happy that our visit has been very successful. I believe that when we next call you will be for him to tell you the expected response,” Chukwunweike said.

Odefa was first suspended from the party by Ward executives of his Oguduokwor Ward in Onicha LGA on September 11, 2024.

The Abakaliki Division of the Federal High Court also upheld the initial suspension of Odefa..

Odefa wrote a petition to the police accusing the ward executives of forging party documents and impersonation of ward executives of the party.

Four members of the party were subsequently arrested, arraigned and remanded in October, 2024 over the matter.

But, consequent upon his earlier suspension,  the Oguduokwor Ward Disciplinary Committee  after hearing the allegations leveled against Odefa recommended the expulsion of the former zonal Chairman of the party.

In the suit, the applicants, some of whom include those remanded last year, prayed the court for enforcement of their fundamental rights pursuant to Order two of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules 2009 and Sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) respectively

Odefa as earlier stated, had accused them of forging documents purporting his suspension as the National Vice Chairman of PDP, South East

Lead counsel to the applicants, Mudiaga Ehrenede had in the suit filed in October last year sought seven reliefs from the Court among which was; a declaration that the threats, invitation, harassment and intimidation of the ward executives for suspending the former National Vice-Chairman (South East) were unconstitutional and a violation of their fundamental human rights.

The applicants had also prayed the Court to grant an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from threatening, arresting, inviting or intimidating the Respondent/applicants for their roles in the suspension of the former National Vice-Chairman (South East) of the PDP for anti-party activities.

Ruling on the suit, the presiding Judge, Justice Hilary I. O. Oshomah held that  Odefa had “maliciously”  used the police against the defendants by making criminal accusations against the applicants in a civil political matter.

The Court frowned at Mr Odefa’s used of the police to maliciously harass and intimidate the applicants in an attempt to prevent them from prosecuting the civil suit pertaining to his suspension which rendered the matter subjudice at the time of the police report.

The court held that Odefa who had alleged in his statement to the police that the defendants forged documents to suspend him as a member of the PDP in Oguduokwor Ward failed to show proof of any form of forgery in the court to support his claims.

The court issued an order restraining  Odefa and the police from harassing, arresting or in any form intimidating the defendants on the issue of his suspension from the PDP, Oguduokwor Ward.

It  awarded damages in the sum of N5, 000, 000 (five million naira) to each of the 20 defendants totaling N100, 000,000 (one hundred million).

The court also awarded another N2m as cost for harassing and attempting to arrest them using the instrumenalities of the Nigerian Police Force.

The court further ordered that the cost must be paid within seven (7) days of the judgement, failure to pay, according to the court will attract 10% daily interest.

Justice Oshomah further gave an order restraining the police and Odefa from harassing,  arresting , inviting any of the Applicants on account of facts pertaining to his suspension.

“That N100m is hereby awarded as general damages against Ali Odefa and N2m as cost in favour of the Applicants in these consolidated suits”, the judge ruled.

At the ruling, the OC Legal of the Nigeria Police,  Ebonyi State Command, Benson Emenike was in the court to represent the Commissioner of Police, while Odefa’s counsel was absent .

  • Momodu and buyer’s remorse

    Momodu and buyer’s remorse

Was it a case of self-belief or self-delusion? Publisher of Ovation Magazine and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu said in a recent published interview that he regretted spending “about N50m” on the presidential nomination form of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2022.

He said: “N50 million would have bought me a property. It was a waste. I didn’t get even one vote because everything was monetised. One of the candidates paid as much as $30,000 per delegate, and we had 774 delegates. So, how do you want to compete with them?”

According to him, “They have stolen the country blind and are doing all kinds of deals to make money, especially those in the oil-rich areas.

“The bulk of their money is not in any bank. So, they are not traceable to any bank. So, they have the money. If today you say to some politicians that you need $500 million to become president, they will find it.”

This is a clear case of a buyer who, with the benefit of hindsight, feels he shouldn’t have bought the form. Not surprisingly, he didn’t reveal the identities of the contestant who allegedly bribed the delegates with $30,000 each, those he accused of stealing the country’s money and politicians who allegedly could come up with $500m in order to become president.

However, his claims gave an insight into the scale of corruption in his party. He unwittingly exposed the sort of politicians who are members of his party. It says a lot about him that he is a member of such a party.

It is unclear whether there were other factors that worked against his presidential aspiration. There were other aspirants who, like Momodu, failed to get a vote in the party’s presidential primary: former governor of Ekiti State Ayodele Fayose and businessman Sam Ohuabunwa. Former vice president Atiku Abubakar who won the primary was defeated by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 presidential election.

Momodu’s narrative may well be true of other parties that participated in the 2023 presidential election. Nigerian politics is notoriously corruption-tainted.

Interestingly, he claims to be politically wiser now. “Experience is the best teacher,” he said, adding, “Unless a major political party decides to adopt me, where you have a consensus of people who say Dele Momodu is best suited to change and to lead Nigeria. Then I will consider it.”

He will have to live with buyer’s remorse regarding “about N50m” he claimed to have spent on the PDP presidential nomination form in 2022 and failing to get a single vote in the primary.
