    ‘My husband is a thief’

A 35-year-old trader, Abimbola Okole, has prayed the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve her 15-year-old marriage to Idowu, accusing him of beating her relations.

Mrs Okole of 19, Janet Olalekan Street, Alakuko,  Lagos, said her husband was fond of gambling.

She said: “From the outset, my mother was not in support of my relationship with him. I thought I was in love. I thought my mother didn’t want the best for me. It was when my family realised I was pregnant that they allowed me to marry him. I was barely 19 when we started living as a couple. We were never at peace. My husband is a thief. There was a time I used to keep his younger brother’s salary, he stole everything.

“I was confused when my husband said he wanted to purchase a land because I knew what he earned for a living couldn’t buy one. On getting a land, my husband didn’t have a kobo to pay. It was my mother who deposited N100, 000. Two months after we moved to our house, he beat me mercilessly, threw my things out, saying he wanted to marry another woman who cared for him.

“It’s not just only me he maltreats. He beats our children as if he isn’t their father.  Most times, he denies them. I can’t count the number of times I left his house. There was a day he sent our first son out of the house because he tampered with his laptop. There is nothing he does for me. As I speak, he hasn’t paid our children’s school fees for one year. My relations have pleaded with him severally but he wouldn’t listen.

“I decided to bring his case to court because of what he did during our last argument. On that day, he wanted to take Garri (Cassava) in the store but I refused since he doesn’t buy food stuff to the house. He beat me mercilessly and almost strangled me to death. Even when our son tried to protect me, he beat us together which landed us to a police station. At the station, when my relations tried to apologise on my behalf, his sister pointed her finger into my mother’s nose, beat her and stripped her naked while my husband beat my father and elder brother who limps leaving a scar on his face. I feel so sad. I am tired of everything. I can’t leave my children with him.”

Idowu, a 37-year-old civil servant in his defence said: “She framed everything. It is a lie. I don’t know how she got the cut on her face but I saw her sister pouring ink on her face. She also slapped my sister.  This is the second time she left my house. I just want the custody of our children.”

The petitioner’s mother, Mrs Modinat Arogundade, who was in court, said she wasn’t happy about her daughter’s marriage troubles.

“He is very violent. My husband is just recovering from the pains Idowu caused him. I don’t support divorce, hence I have always advised my children to endure in their marriage. Right now, I am in support of whatever the court decides,” she said.

The court’s president, Chief Awos Awosola, ordered the respondent’s sister, Onyebuchi Omowole, to serve a three-day community service or pay N5, 000 for harassing the bailiff last Thursday when he went to serve her the court summons.

Awosola remanded Okole till March 12.

Thief belittles Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar dress

    •Returns outfit, says it’s fake

Until the dress got missing and was returned by the anonymous thief, the white custom Calvin Klein gown Lupita wore to present J. K. Simmons’s Best Supporting Actor, at the just-concluded Academy Awards, was one of the biggest stories of the show.

It caused more stirs as police were flustered as to how her Oscar dress escaped detection when it was taken from her hotel room, but soon discovered it was thrown off her balcony.

TMZ reported that the cameras weren’t trained on Lupita’s door and none of the cameras on the floor showed anything suspicious.

The guy who stole the dress had called the news medium, Friday, with a road map to its recovery in The London West Hollywood bathroom where the 12 Years a Slave actress had lodged. The thief said he knew where the cameras were placed in the hallway so he was never seen. As for the dress, he claimed he threw it over the balcony and someone on the ground picked it up.

On why he returned the dress, the thief said he took two of the pearls off the dress and down to the Garment District for appraisal, but found they were worthless. He then decided to return the dress.

According to the thief, he regretted not taking Lupita’s Oscar gift bag instead, which he valued at $125,000.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles sheriff’s spokeswoman Nicole Nishida said the dress found on Friday afternoon at a West Hollywood hotel “greatly resembles” the pearl-adorned Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa dress Nyong’o wore to the Academy Awards.

She said detectives are attempting to verify the recovered dress is the same one Nyong’o wore.

Encrusted with 6,000 white Akoya pearls, Fortune estimated it was worth $150,000.

  • ‘My husband is a thief, fake pastor’

A 36-year-old woman has described her husband as a thief and fake pastor, pleading with the court to dissolve their nine-year-old marriage

Mrs Adeola Imafidon told the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos that her husband, Sunday Imafidon, had become a disgrace to her.

Mrs Imafidon, a laboratory scientist, said: “My husband is a fake pastor, thief and womaniser. He has been arrested over six times for defrauding people. I am always embarrassed each time I go to bail him. My health is suffering a great deal. When I talk a lot, my heart palpitates. I have always endured because of our children.

“He doesn’t cater for our children let alone pay our house rent. Currently, we live with my mother. I can’t remember the last time he sent our children’s monthly allowance.”

She added that they had not slept with each other for three years.

‘’He once beat me and pushed me towards a moving vehicle. I’m tired of his repulsive attitude. I don’t want to die; please dissolve our marriage,” she told the court.

Forty-four-year-old Imafidon said he duped people in order to satisfy his wife.

‘’When I had a job, my wife never complained of anything or my character. But since I lost my job, my wife’s attitude changed. I was forced to borrow money from people but I get arrested whenever I don’t refund their money.

“It is true she has been responsible for the children’s upkeep. The last time I slept with her was two months ago at a hotel – not three years. If I wasn’t a good husband, we wouldn’t have children. I still love my wife and I promise to turn a new leaf if our issue is resolved,” he said.

The marriage is blessed with two children.

The court’s President, Chief Awos Awosola, asked Imafidon if it was befitting for a pastor to take his wife to a hotel to sleep with her.

He pleaded with Mrs Imafidon to consider her husband, following which there was a 30-minute recess for the couple to have a private talk; but the wife insisted on dissolution.

Awosola dissolved the union and ordered Imafidon to be responsible for the children’s school fees. He will also provide N10,000 monthly for their feeding.

    Suspected car thief nabbed

The police at Wuse division have arrested a suspected car snatcher at Kayes Street, Wuse Zone 1, Abuja.

The Divisional Police Officer of the station, Chief Superintendent Joshua Bakyi, said the man was arrested by his men on patrol who noticed him struggling to remove a Toyota Camry car where it was parked.

“My men on routine patrol saw a man struggling to remove a Toyota Camry car from where it was parked at around 4am at Kayes Street, Wuse Zone 1 on Easter morning.

“Immediately they saw his suspicious moves, he was arrested and a handset and laptop computer were found on him,” he said.

The police officer hinted that the mobile phone was later discovered to be one of the items earlier reported stolen by a lady at the division last week, adding that they were able to make such discoveries based on the text messages found on the phone.

A resident of Wuse  Zone 1, Mr. Taiwo Oyerinde, told our reporter that such incidents are rampant in the area, adding that armed robbers attack residents of the area frequently.

“I was recently robbed of my handsets and money in my street but the police are now aware of the level of armed robbery attacks here and they have intensified patrol. I hope that it would be sustained,” he said.

When contacted, FCT police spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent Hyelhira Altine Daniel, said the police at Wuse were able to arrest the suspect because of the command’s determination to rid the territory of any form of criminality, assuring that the commissioner is working harder to ensure that Abuja is safe for all.

”Residents of FCT should endeavour to call [police] emergency numbers at any particular time whenever they suspect any criminal activities within their areas.”
