  • Three killed in robbers, police battle at Ojo

    Three persons, including two suspected robbers, were  killed on Tuesday when gunmen invaded a community in Ojo, Lagos.

    The gunmen invaded Gafaru Street, Imude in Ojo on motorcycles and robbed residents. They shot those who resisted them.

    Among those killed was  Obina Efenkandu, 32, of 124, Gafaru Street, Imude.

    Two other residents- Collins Ichu, 26, and Abdullah Niger, 40 – were injured.

    It was learnt that a distress call was made to the Ilemba-Hausa Police Division in Ojo, which called for reinforcement from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Metro Patrol Teams.

    In a statement yesterday, Lagos Command spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said two of the robbers were killed during a gun battle with the police, adding that two others were arrested.

    He said: “On sighting the police, the robbers opened fire, but were subdued by the superior firepower of our gallant teams. Two suspects, Semiu Ibrahim, 24, and Francis Obi, 29, were arrested, while Chinozo Felix, 29, alias Power and Ifeanyi Uche died.

    “Three Berreta pistols with three live ammunition and three expended ammunition were recovered. One unregistered Bajaj Motorcycle was recovered from the scene.

    “The injured persons were taken to hospital.”

  • Three killed, two injured in Sapele

    No fewer than three persons were feared dead at a polling unit in Amukpe area of Sapele, Delta State during yesterday’s elections. Two others were badly injured.

    Eye witnesses described the assailants as political thugs.

    They said the suspected thugs unexpected swooped on the voters who were queuing to vote and opened fire.

    Two died on the spot while three others who were hit were rushed to the hospital. One of them however died.

    A resident said: “I’m not sure if they carted election materials away, but I saw that the ground of the place was littered with election materials, giving me the impression that they only scattered the materials.”

    The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeleke Adeyinka, could not confirm the incident, saying he wanted to get across to the people on the ground in Amukpe to ascertain the truth.

    But a reliable security source said: “immediately we heard of the situation, we moved in to take over the area so as to stabilize it and prevent a further escalation of the situation.”

    Meanwhile, voting was relatively peaceful in most other polling units as voters were seen casting their votes. For instance, Sapele ward 7, units 7 and 8, along Ugberikoko Road, voters were still casting their votes at 2:09pm.

  • Three killed in Kaduna village

    Three persons were killed, two nursing mothers and an eight-day-old kidnapped when bandits attacked communities in Unguwar Dan-Baki, Sabon-Layi, Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, on Sunday.

    The attackers, who stormed the village, about 7pm, also abducted five men.

    An eyewitness, Garba Tanko, said: “We were attacked as we are about joining Maghreb (evening prayers).”

    The attackers are using Kamuku and Kuyambana Forests in Zamfara State to terrorise farming communities in Birnin-Gwari.

    Chairman of Birnin-Gwari Vanguards for Security and Good Governance Ibrahim Abubakar Nagwari called on the Federal Government to deploy more troops in the area.

    He said: “As the military and police personnel advance in securing many parts of our territories, we call on the Federal Government to deploy more security forces in Birnin-Gwari to prevent the influx of bandits escaping military onslaught in Zamfara State.”

    As at last night, police spokesman Muktar Aliyu could not be reached for comments.

  • Three killed in Akwa Ibom rival cult clashes

    Three persons have been reportedly killed in renewed clashes between rival cult groups in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

    It was gathered that the bloody supremacy battle between members of the Vikings Confraternity and the Black Axe started last Sunday at a motel in the Afaha Uqua axis of the oil-rich city.

    A source, who pleaded not to be named, said the two groups had been at each other’s throat for three months, following squabbles not unconnected with power struggle.

    According to the source, one suspected cultist was killed on Liverpool Road and the second in Uqua village, while the third was killed at a point in Atai Ndon village in Eket Local Government Area.

    “The present clash leading to the death of three started on Sunday when a member of Vikings Confraternity unleashed terror on a member of the Black Axe with machete cuts,” the source said.

    He added that two friends in rival confraternities were at the motel on Afaha Uqua Road when members of the Vikings allegedly attacked them.

    The friends reportedly attacked a member of Black Axe who had attempted to defend his Viking friend.

    He said the Black Axe Confraternity member was macheted to death.

    According to him, the two cult groups have been fighting, which led to the death of the three persons and injury to several others.

    Police spokesman MacDon Achebe, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the command was on top of the situation.

    He added: “The police will not tolerate any act that will lead to breakdown of law and order in the state.

    “The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is calling all those who are directly or indirectly connected with criminality to desist. Otherwise, the full wrath of the law will be visited on perpetuators.”

    He said the laws proscribing cultism and “gangsterism” was still in place, adding that the command would ensure that nobody takes the law into his or her hands.

  • Three killed by gunmen in Plateau attack

    Unknown gunmen on Friday night invaded Kura Falls community in Gashish District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing three residents.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Mr. Terna Tyopev, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Jos said the attack occurred on Friday night and yesterday morning.

    “We received information this morning at about 7 a.m. that residents of Kura Falls were attacked at about 9:30 p.m. and the early hours of Saturday by unknown gunmen,” he said.

    “This resulted in the death of three persons identified as Dawala Bullet, 30; Fidelis Richard, 31; and Iliya Doro, 60.

    “We have mobilised to the area to ensure normalcy and quell any further attack and breach of the law,” Tyopev said.

    The PPRO said investigations were ongoing to track and arrest the perpetrators who must be made to face Justice.

     

  • Three killed in Rivers during suspected cultists’ invasion

    Three persons were yesterday killed by suspected members of Icelander cult. They invaded Ibaa in Emohua Local Government of Rivers State.

    The Nation learnt the suspected cultists got to Ibaa from neighbouring communities at 6 am and started shooting sporadically, while looking for members of the rival Degbam cult.

    The incident resulted in fear, as residents scampered for safety.

    An Ibaa indigene, who spoke in confidence, urged the Governor Nyesom Wike administration and security agencies to be alive to their responsibilities.

    Police spokesman Nnamdi Omoni’s line was not reachable last night.

  • Three killed as gunmen invade Cross River community

    Three people were feared killed and many injured in Odukpani Qua community in Odukpani local government area in Cross River State when gunmen suspected to be from a neighbouring community attacked them on Friday night, The Nation gathered yesterday.

    The surprise attack, which it was learnt was a reprisal, was connected with a traditional leadership tussle in the area.

    According to an eyewitness from Odukpani Qua community, the assailants came at about 10 pm in three buses that had Deeper Life Bible Church banner on them to divert attention as the church was holding an Easter convention in Odukpani at the time.

    The eyewitness said the invaders, who were many, came down from the buses and started shooting sporadically at people leading to three deaths and several injuries.

    He said the attack lasted for over an hour before they got in their bus and drove away.

    Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Ugbo, however said she was yet to confirm the situation.

    “I will confirm and get back to you,” she said.

    However, she did not get back to our reporter at the time of filing this report.

     

  • Three killed in fresh Plateau attack

    Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have killed three  persons in Dong Community of Jos North Area of Plateau State.

    Mr.Terna Tyopev, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state confirmed told  the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos that the incident which occurred Thursday night, left some people injured.

    “Yesterday (Thursday) at about 7p.m., we got information that gunmen invaded Dong community of Jos North and killed three persons.

    “We immediately mobilised our personnel to the area we were able to bring the situation under control.

    “Our men were also stationed in the area to forestall further attacks and break down of law and order,” Tyopev said.

    The PPRO, who said bodies of the deceased persons had been buried, called on residents of the area to remain calm, law abiding and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.

    Gunmen had last Wednesday attacked same community where three soldiers, two mobile policemen and scores of civilians were killed.

  • Three killed in Cross River clash

    The police yesterday confirmed the death of three persons in a communal clash in Cross River.

    But sources claimed that about 10 persons died in the clash between Okwabang and Beebo in Boki council of Cross River State at the weekend.

    A source from the area told The Nation yesterday, that the cause of the quarrel was land ownership.

    Commissioner of Police Hafiz Inuwa said three people were killed in the clash.

    “The information we have is oanly three that have been killed. We have only been able to confirm two,” he said.

    Inuwa said he deployed regular and mobile policemen from neighbouring local government areas, as well as the capital, Calabar, to check the situation.

    He said the military also joined the policemen to restore calm.

    The commissioner said the communities had a peace meeting on Sunday, and will hold a grand peace meeting,  today.

    The source from the area said both communities had fought over land for ages.

    He said trouble began last week when Beebo community reportedly harvested produce from a farm allegedly belonging to an Okwabang man.

    ‘’The situation led to a confrontation between the communities, leading to a clash, which claimed lives at the weekend,” the source said.
