Three killed, six injured in Taraba attack

Three persons died and six were injured in an overnight attack on Maisamari town in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State.

Police spokesman David Misal, said the attack, by a suspected militia, occurred at a cultural event, called Nding-Chin.

Misal, who said the area is now calm, added that the command deployed more policemen to tighten security.

Acting Chairman of Sardauna council Godwin Sol told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the council banned cultural meetings and festivals because of the security situation.

He said he was, however, surprised when the group mobilised its kinsmen for a dance in Maisamari against the council’s order.

Sol added that security operatives dispersed the gathering, giving everyone time to leave.

But instead of leaving, the group relocated to the house of Yaya Ahmadun to continue its dance.

“It was then unknown gunmen attacked the place, killed three persons and injured six,” Sol said.

The council boss added that the host and leaders of the group have been arrested.

  • Three killed as rival cultists clash in Akure

Three suspected cultists were reportedly killed at the weekend in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

It was learnt that the rival cult groups, Eiye and Aiye Confraternity, have been engaging each other in gun duel in the last few days.

Areas like Obanla, Roadblock, Adebowale Junction were the buffer zones.

On Monday night, the rival cult gangs took on each other at NEPA area of the ancient town and gunned down a man in his ‘20s.

President of Akure Youth Coalition, Tuyi Adekanbi, described the development as saddening.

According to him, if the trend is not checked, youths will shut down roads and markets in Akure to ask for government’s intervention in the attacks.

Adekanbi recalled that some youths had alerted residents that Akure was sitting on a keg of gun powder with the activities of rivalry cultists.

The youth leaders said the hoodlums had graduated from night attacks to daylight killings.

He said: “There was pandemonium in the nooks and crannies of Akure. They dispossessed innocent people of their belongings. Many people have been running to avoid danger in the past three days.

“Another boy was shot dead at NEPA Roundabout this evening (yesterday). His body has been deposited at the morgue. Help us. Our youths are dying daily. Help us to call Mr Governor and our celebrated Secretary to the State Government (SSG) to rise to their responsibility.”

Police spokesman Femi Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said three deaths were recorded in an inter-cult attacks.

He said the command arrested 20 suspects in connection for various crimes in the town since the beginning of the clash.

Joseph said investigations had begun into the incident to apprehend the culprits.

•68 held as conductor is shot in Mushin

Three scavengers were killed in Ijegun, a Lagos suburb by persons described as Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) members.
Ten others are said to be critically ill in hospital after being shot.
In Mushin, a bus conductor was hit by bullet during a gang war between Alamutu and Idi-Oro boys.
The Ijegun killings sparked a riot as other scavengers gathered to fight OPC members who were allegedly demanding money from them for operating in the area.
Their refusal to yield to the demand was said to have led to the killings.
The sounds of gunshot was said to have forced schools and businesses to quickly shut down.
The protesting scavengers expressed frustrations over alleged harassment, intimidation and extortion by the OPC members.
They allegedly contacted their colleagues in other parts of the state, who came to join them to attack the OPC’s security post.
They reportedly brandished dangerous weapons and were moving to destroy other OPC offices in the area when policemen led by Area M Commander, Austin Akika, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) arrived.
It was gathered that over 10 police vans were stationed in the community and riot policemen deployed in strategic areas.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the injured were taken to Eniola Hospital, Isheri-Oshun.
The traditional ruler of Ijegun, Oba Nureni Akinremi, told NAN that police men from Area ‘M’ Command were invited to quell the clash which disrupted commercial activities in the area for several hours.
“I did not allow the clash to escalate so I called a combined police team from Isheri Osun, Ikotun and Area `M’, Idimu to restore normalcy,” he said.
Scores were injured and many shops destroyed in the Mushin gang war. It took the intervention of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the police to restore calm.
Sixty-eight persons were arrested over the skirmish. Six bags of Indian hemp were recovered from some of the suspects.
They were paraded at the Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force) office in Oshodi.
The 20-year-old conductor, Wariz Alimi, who was hit on the chest, was rushed to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) by our reporter. He said: “I just returned from Oshodi where I went to look for my boss, who is a driver. My friend told me that we should play around; as we were moving towards Idi-Oro, we discovered they were fighting and there were sounds of gunshot everywhere. I had not even gone far when a bullet brushed through my chest. Please don’t let me die. I don’t know the cause of the fight. My grandma is in Ibadan, I have to go there, don’t let me die,” he said.
He pleaded to be discharged after being treated, despite having “deep wounds.”
Alimi said cultists at Idi-Araba could lynch him if they knew a Mushin guy was admitted in LUTH.
According to him, Mushin and Idi-Araba gangs have banned themselves from each other’s territory.
He said he has no home in Lagos, but sleeps at a place called Ghetto in Idi-Oro.
“My mum is dead and all I have is my Grandma. I have no links to any family member,” Alimi said.

  • Three killed, 23 injured as luxury bus plunges into Lagos river

Three killed, 23 injured as luxury bus plunges into Lagos river

Three persons, including a driver, Sidi Abudu, 40, yesterday lost their lives  after an interstate luxury bus in which they were travelling  plunged into the Majidun River, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

59 people were on board the ill-fated  bus which had taken off from Aba,Abia State for Lagos on Thursday evening.

It had travelled all night stopping over in Benin,Edo State to pick more passengers.

However,on the Majidun River bridge at Owode Elede, about 30 minutes from its Mazamaza,Lagos, final destination, the bus unexpectedly took a plunge  into the depth of the water below.

    Time was about 3.30am

Some of the passengers were able to swim their way out of danger immediately, while officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency  (LASEMA)  who raced to the scene succeeded in rescuing the rest, save the three that died.

Dead were  Abudu, the conductor  of the bus and a female passenger.

The accident sparked a  gridlock on the road as motorists and commuters set out to go about their businesses.

LASEMA attributed the accident to overspeeding.

General Manger of the organisation,Mr.Adesina Tiamiyu, said: “The bus skidded off its track, while on high speed and plunged into the canal.

“Of the 59 passengers onboard, 23 persons sustained injuries. Some of them were treated on the spot by paramedics from LASAMBUS, but nine persons were taken to the Lagos State Trauma Centre, Toll Gate, for further treatment.

“Then three persons, including two adult males and a female, were recovered dead from the water. The bus was also recovered with the help of a crane.

“The rescue team handed over the dead bodies, their belongings and the recovered bus to policemen at Owode Division.

“Proper investigation would be conducted on the incident. Motorists are advised to be safety conscious and avoid excessive speeding while driving, especially when embarking on night journeys.”

Abudu, The Nation gathered, had gone to Benin, Edo State on Thursday to deliver a vehicle before joining the ill-fated bus to Lagos.

His elder brother, Abu, who was invited to identify  his corpse was in tears as he recounted how Abudu met his death.

His words: “I don’t know what to say. My younger brother left Lagos yesterday (Thursday) to drop a vehicle in Benin.

“He was  a driver by profession. He called me when he arrived Benin and said he was returning to Lagos that same night only for me to get a call that there was an accident.

“ I came here only to see my brother inside a bag. He died in the accident. My brother is dead.

“Yes, he’s married with five children. The eldest is about 14 years, while the youngest is a year plus. He lived at Okokomaiko, but no one is in the house now.”

One of the lucky survivors  identified only as Nnamdi said the accident happened in the twinkle of an eye.

“The journey was smooth. In fact, some of us were even cracking jokes. The accident happened in the twinkle of an eye. We started crying for help, but no one came to us. After over one hour, I began to lose hope,” online publication,The Cable, quoted him as saying.

He added:”Some of us were praying, some were just crying. I got confused and didn’t know what to do. It was when it almost got to two hours that some men came to rescue us. At that time, three people had died.”

Nnamdi,a trader on Lagos Island , said he boarded the bus in Benin in Edo State.

”I just don’t know what to say. Where would I have been by now? It’s still like a dream,” he told The Cable,” he said.

One  Samuel Edeh,  who operates an engineering workshop close to the scene of the accident, said several accidents have occurred on that same court .

He said: “The driver told us that the vehicle brushed the  pavement so he was trying to control the steering, but he couldn’t. He lost control and the bus plunged  into the river.”

Another resident of the area, Abdu-Ganiu Adeyemi, who has a welder’s shop on the bank of the river, corroborated Edeh’s view, saying:”I have been here for two years and I can confidently state that these accidents have been rampant on this junction.”

However, an  official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) dismissed the claims as untrue.

The officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said:”I don’t see any justification in the insinuations the residents are making. It’s true that the beckoning light, which ought to flash to indicate that there is a partitioning, has been wiped off, but the residents are a party to it.

“Let’s assume it is the absence of the reflector that is responsible for people not seeing the pointer, showing that there is a separation at that point,  but essentially, there is a speed limit that anybody driving on this road  should take cognizance of and thus drive with caution.

“What we were able to deduce from the accident is that it was as a result of   reckless driving. The driver was evidently overspeeding. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have uprooted one of the traffic lights off its track. That says something about the driver’s speed”.

  • Three killed, two injured as gunmen kidnap doctor

Three killed, two injured as gunmen kidnap doctor

Three persons were killed and two injured early yesterday when gunmen invaded an estate in Isheri North of Lagos State and kidnapped the residents’ association’s secretary, Dr Dayo Adekoya.

Adekoya was snatched on Road 18, off Olusegun Tawoju Avenue after the gunmen broke into his house.

They scaled the electrified fence into the compound, smashed windows and walls when they could not break through his armoured door, to get him.

They came through the waterways, left their boats at the nearby creek and used a ladder to scale the fence.

They brought the victim out through his gate and attempted to use him to access others’ homes.

Their plan to kidnap more people was forestalled by security men and the police.

Those killed were two Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) members and a carpenter identified as Ibadan. Their bodies have been recovered.

    The injured are in hospital.

It was gathered that the Nigerian Army deployed Phantom IV drone to survey the area and possibly locate the gunmen and their victim.

Lagos Police Commissioner Fatai Owoseni, Commander 9th Brigade, Brig Gen. Elias Attu, Rapid Response Squad  (RRS) Commander Olatunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) were at the scene for the on – spot – assessment.

A patrol van was stationed in front of Adekoya’s house, while many other police and military vehicles were seen at strategic locations.

According to Adekoya’s friend, who refused to be named, the kidnappers have contacted his family and demanded ransom.

He said: “They have already contacted the wife and told her to get ready. She was begging them to take things easy. I really don’t know how much they demanded. The wife and kids have left the house.

“The kidnappers interrogated the family before taking the victim away. They came very prepared. They used a ladder to scale the fence and when they couldn’t break the door, they smashed the window.

“They wanted to use him to kidnap more people but thankfully, policemen came and started blowing their siren. They shot sporadically and killed two OPC men who tried to prevent them. They also killed a carpenter and injured two others. The kidnappers took their time. I think they also succeeded because it’s a lonely neighbourhood. You can see that there are not many houses around.”

The police recovered expended and live AK47 bullets at the scene.

Owoseni said the gunmen came through the canal, adding: “The timely arrival of the police prevented them from getting more victims because they were using Adekoya to go to people’s houses.

“But we came in and we prevented them. They ran towards the swamp and as they were running, they were firing and the bullets hit some of the local guards.

“We have also made some progress in investigation when we were doing our stop-and-search. We are quite hopeful.

“The police have recovered the expended and unexpended AK47 bullets. For now, due to the porosity of the area, land owners should stop building homes near the canal until security agents put measures in place.”

Three killed as Agip pipeline explodes

Three persons were killed on Sunday in a pipeline explosion at Olugboboro, near Olugbobiri, in Southern Ijaw Local Government of Bayelsa State.

The pipeline, it was learnt, belongs to the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC).

A security source, who spoke in confidence, said: “There was a rupture on Agip pipeline and welders were engaged to clamp it. In the process, the pipeline exploded and went into flames.”

The source blamed the incident on lack of precaution and alleged compromise of safety measures by the oil company.

He described the incident as one too many.

The source recalled that last July 9, a blast during a repair at Agip’s oil field in Azuzuama, also in Southern Ijaw, led to the death of 14 people.

A regulatory official of the Ministry of Environment and National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and 12 maintenance crew members were among the victims.

Also, a state Representative of the Environmental Rights Action (ERA) confirmed the report.

He said two of the deceased were from his maternal hometown in Brass, Brass Local Government Area.

The representative identified one of the victims as a professional welder and the other as the only son of his mother.

He said: “Another Agip pipeline explosion claimed three lives on Sunday. The pipeline is at Olugboboro, not far from Olugbobiri.

“Two persons from my maternal home town, Brass, are among the dead. One of them is a professional welder and the other is the only son of his mother.”

The representative said some repairs were being done on the pipeline when it exploded.

“Clamping or repairs were on when the incident happened. At least, that is the cause of the explosion, as per information at ERA’s disposition,” he said.

But NOSDRA said there was a blast at an oil field operated by Agip.

NOSDRA’s Director-General Dr. Peter Idabor said an employee of the agency escaped death.

Idabor said the survivor drew the attention of oil workers to an alleged breach of safety procedure and left the scene before the explosion occurred.

He added: “I received a report of the incident from our worker in Yenagoa (Bayelsa State capital) office. Luckily, one of our officers in the team survived. Because of the safety conditions of the place, after inspection, my staff left the place. He was not affected.

“I am going to report the matter officially to the minister of Environment today.”

  • Three killed in communal crisis

Three persons have been killed and scores injured in Koko, headquarters of Warri North Local Government of Delta State, following a leadership tussle by rival youth groups.

Some of the victims are receiving treatment at the Koko General Hospital.

An eyewitness, Tony Timokpe, said shops, schools and markets were closed while social activities have been paralysed.

The Nation gathered that the two groups, which were involved in the leadership tussle could not reach a compromise, prompting intervention by elders of the community.

Following this development, an interim committee, headed by Victor Buwa, was inaugurated by the elders to pilot the affairs of the youths for 90 days.

The Buwa-led interim committee, it was gathered, refused to relinquish power after the expiration of its mandate.

A victim, Luke Komeni, said: “I was walking in the street when a stray bullet hit my right arm.

“I don’t belong to any of the groups. By the grace of God, I am responding to treatment.”

A source said 30 persons were arrested at various locations in the community.

He said many youths have fled the community for fear of being arrested.

Police spokesman Lucky Uyabeme said he was away on an official assignment, adding that the command was unaware of the incident.
