    Tinubu thrilled by Ambode’s scorecard

DESPITE the huge debt he inherited, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has performed well, All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said yesterday.

Tinubu, who was governor between 1999 and 2007, recommended Ambode for commendation.

He spoke at the inauguration of a bridge linking Aboru and Abesan and five adjoining roads in the Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Authority of Alimosho Local Government Area in commemoration of his 65th birthday.

Addressing a large crowd of residents, the former Lagos helmsman said: “I was worried when you (Ambode) took over, not about your credibility, character or capacity, but because however wise or smart a man is, if there is no resource to back the ideas, the production would be zero; progress would be zero.

“When you (Ambode) took over, I know you inherited a burden of debt. The debt profile of Lagos was high. I was wondering how you will reengineer and face the challenges to make progress.

“Today, I can see your report card; you have scored well, you have shown prudence, especially in the use of resources of the state.”

Tinubu praised the governor for re-engineering the state’s financial structure, noting that Ambode did not betray the trust reposed in him.

He said: “You didn’t disappoint us. Ambode is silently achieving, religiously executing and brilliantly giving results for Lagos State.

“All over Lagos, we are seeing the results. At Oshodi, on our way down here, we can see what is happening there; that place is a construction site. It used to be a den of robbers. But what are going on there now are developmental activities for the benefit of the entire country.”

Tinubu thanked Ambode for marking his birthday with the inauguration of projects, describing it as a reflection of a very good governor, who is a thinker and a doer.

“Today, you (Ambode) have given me a good birthday present. This is a great opportunity for me to be very proud again,” Tinubu said.

Ambode said the projects being inaugurated were parts of his administration’s drive of inclusiveness in the state’s growth.

Exactly a year ago, Ambode said he visited the community and saw the terrible state in which the road network was. He was touched.

He said he directed the Public Works Corporation (PWC) to move to the site three weeks after his visit.

Ambode said:  “This project is an indication that our government listens and responds to the needs of our people. We will continue to deliver first-class infrastructure to improve the lives of our people, boost the economy and create jobs for our youths. On your part, I urge you to take ownership and protect the infrastructure; use them appropriately so that they can serve you for a long time.

“Beyond this, we are very grateful to the contractor on this project, Olalekan Adebiyi, who has deemed it necessary to contribute to the healthcare of this community by donating a Primary Healthcare Centre to the Alimosho people. Thank you very much, Mr. Adebiyi.

“On our part, we have equipped the health centre and provided a brand new ambulance which will be stationed at this centre to respond to any emergency in the community. A certificate will be issued to the donor to enable him offset his tax obligations. We hope this will encourage other well-meaning Lagosians to take up Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities within their communities.

“In addition to this, we are celebrating our mentor; a visionary leader, the brain behind the 21st Century Lagos, His Excellency, the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu today. We have decided to honour him by commissioning the construction of a network of roads within the boundaries of Lagos and Ogun states.”

The roads include Church Street, Giwa Street, Victor Fagbemi Road, Ogunfayo Road, Ogundare Street, Salami Kazeem, all totalling 5.5km, with drainage, walkways and street lights. The roads will ease the pressure on the Abeokuta Expressway, linking residents with Iyana Ipaja, LASU-Iba Expressway, the governor said.

Ambode identified many roads for rehabilitation, adding that work would begin next week on the listed roads to give the area a facelift.

They include: 6.4km -Ikola Road with Odo Obasanjo Bridge (from Ipaja/Command to Ilo River); 1.75km  – Ogunseye Road (from Ajasa/Command to Ikola Road); 1.5km – Oko Filling Road (from AIT to Ilo River); 620m Osenatu Ilo road (from Ibari Road to Ilo River); 3.1km – Amikanle road  (from AIT to Ogunseye Road); 1.9km – Aina Aladi road  (from AIT to Ilo River) and 1.4km  – Aiyetoro Road with a bridge (from New Market/Ishefun Road intersection to Ilo River).

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola said it was obvious that Ambode did not only start well, but he is doing well.

He solicited the cooperation of the people to engender further dividends of democracy and good governance.

The governor urged Ambode to continue the development of Alimosho, saying that there were many other roads and bridges requiring upgrade.

Other guests at the event were Senators Solomon Olamilekan, Ganiu Solomon, Isiaka Adeleke and Bisi Yusuf.

Chibuike said he is excited with his contribution to the victory in the game he described as tough.

  • Zaharaddeen thrilled to play for Pillars

Zaharaddeen thrilled to play for Pillars

Former Nigeria under-20 defender Zaharaddeen Bello has told supersport.com that the experience of playing in the country’s top-flight has come handy for him.

The teenage centre-back was hooked by outgoing Nigeria Glo Premier League champions, Kano Pillars, in mid-season after  injuries to high-profile defenders like Reuben Ogbonnaya, Adamu Murtala and Joel Djongdang though Murtala and Djongdang have recovered but Ogbonnaya has unfortunately saw off the rest of the season on the sidelines.

Zaharaddeen explained that he had to join up with the Nigerian champions after playing for the country’s Under-17 and Under-20 national teams after a concrete deal was unable to be struck for him to move abroad.

“Playing at Kano Pillars is another experience entirely for me, and I am happy I made the choice at a time when I couldn’t move abroad. I had the option to play abroad but it was not concrete and as a young player I think this decision to play for Kano Pillars is good for my development,” Zaharaddeen told supersport.com.

The youngster has seen quite enough happenings at Kano Pillars in his short spell so far with the Nigerian champions, and feels it is part of the phase every team go through once in a while in their history.

Since making his debut at Enyimba when he came on as a late substitute for Eneji Otekpa, Zaharaddeen has seen the champions knocked off their perch as well as lost their 12-year unbeaten home record but remains proud of the Kano club’s achievement.

“It is one of those things in football. You cannot win everytime. I still remember how we won the Under-17 World Cup but everyone expected us to win the Under-20 World Cup and that didn’t happen. That is how football works at times. But I am still proud of Kano Pillars because they have achieved a lot and despite coming into the team at this time, I am happy to have played with experienced players like Rabiu Ali, Gambo Mohammed and goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai who are heroes here,” he said.

Zaharaddeen was a member of Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets that won the 2013 Fifa Under-17 World Cup.

The defender has also played for the Nigeria under-20s which failed to go past the round of 16 in New Zealand at the Fifa Under-20 World Cup this year.

Salami thrilled at 5th goal of the season

Warri Wolves’ Gbolahan Salami has said he is happy  scoring the only goal that fetched his club the full points at home to FC Taraba in a Glo Premier League Week 10 tie played at the Warri City Stadium yesterday.

The Seasiders were just smarting from their away win at Umuahia against Abia Warriors with tension high for them to maintain same level of consistency for a second straight victory after the loss to Dolphins in Port Harcourt.

Salami has netted his fifth goal of the season to move joint top alongside Namso Edo in the race for the best marksman in the premier league. Edo fired blank as his side got drowned 3-0 by Enugu Rangers in Enugu.

“I am happy for this win and the fact that I was able to keep the promise of ensuring that I score against FC Taraba. The journey has just begun and we are prepared for whatever the season throws at us,” an elated Salami told SportingLife.

  • Eguma thrilled with win

    Eguma thrilled with win

Stanley Eguma was very happy after Dolphins beat Warri Wolves 1-0 to end a poor run of four games in the Glo Premier League without a win.

Bolaji Sakin sealed the outcome of the keenly contested encounter in the 62nd minute when he nodded past Daniel Akpeyi from close range.

A relieved Eguma told supersport.com afterwards: “The era of drawing matches has gone as we have resumed winning. We’re back to the era of winning and we have to take full advantage of our home matches henceforth. We are thankful for the victory because our opponents played well.

“I must commend my players for their resilience as a lot of things seemed to go wrong, particularly when we lost our goalkeeper early in the game. It affected our game plan, but they were able to handle the situation.”

Eguma said they needed the win after some disappointing draws at home. However, he added his players were being owed and it was affecting their performance.

“It is not as if we have been under pressure, but there are bound to be reactions when results are not coming. That is why we’ve been working hard to do better. There are some problems we are facing that most people are not aware of,” he said.

“The players are being owed and they are not happy. This has been affecting their concentration. You can see that we play good football, but have problems converting chances because of (lack of) concentration.”

Warri Wolves head coach Paul Aigbogun did not have much to say after the match adding: “Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Today we lost. Congratulations to Dolphins.”

Dolphins have moved to 10th place in the Glo Premier League with 11 points from eight matches, same as Wolves, who are 12th due to an inferior goal difference.

  • Efe Ambrose thrilled by Celtic debut

Efe Ambrose thrilled by Celtic debut

Super Eagles central back and Celtic new import Efe Ambrose has expressed delight over his debut for the Scottish side at the weekend

Ambrose, who got his work permit in time to make the bench for his side on Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League tie against Benfica, played his first game for Celtic in a 2-0 win over Dundee United when he was thrown into the fray in the 86th minute as substitute for Scott Brown.

The former Ashdod and Kaduna United ace hopes for more appearances even as he predicted that his sojourn in Glasgow will be fruitful.

He said, “I am happy with my debut and look forward to playing more games and achieving a lot with a great team like Celtic,” the Nigeria international said.

His compatriot Rabiu Ibrahim was an unused substitute.

The central defender had to settle for only a place on the bench in the Champions League group tie at home against Benfica on Wednesday because he was late in rejoining the team as he pursued his work permit in Israel.

“It is a good one that I was selected for the Champions League game. I wanted to play the game but I joined the team a bit late to start due to processing of my work permit,” Ambrose informed MTNFootball.com
