  • Paulker, Dickson fight for ticket

Senator Emmanuel Paulker (Bayelsa Central) yesterday obtained the nomination forms to challenge Governor Seriake Dickson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket.

The governorship election is expected to hold in December.

Paulker, a former chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), submitted his form at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

The senator told reporters about his bright chances to upstage Dickson “even though he’s a sitting governor”.

He added: “The race is quite open and the will of party members is supreme in deciding who ultimately gets the party’s ticket for the contest.”

Paulker expressed confidence that the PDP, which he said was rebuilding, “will toe the path of honour and allow a free and fair primary where the best candidate who can effectively represent the interest of the party and win the confidence of the voters in the state, will emerge.”

The PDP chieftain dismissed the recent defection of some party members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He noted that though the defectors were known party members, “the PDP …is an institution fully integrated into the minds of the Bayelsa people, which they love and will continue to vote for”.

Paulker assessed the controversial Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), saying President Muhammadu Buhari cannot do away with it, if he really wanted the oil sector to function optimally.

He rued the missed opportunity by the last Senate in not passing the bill even after doing a “good work” on it.

The politician urged the Buhari administration to re-presented the bill to the National Assembly, hoping that the lawmakers would expedite action on its passage and free the oil industry from the encumbrances militating against its growth.

  • Who gets Kogi APC ticket?

    Who gets Kogi APC ticket?

No fewer than 28 aspirants are warming up for Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries scheduled for Lokoja, the state capital, tomorrow. Group Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines the contenders and pretenders and their chances at the shadow poll.

Kogi State is a unique state. Ethnicity plays a big role in deciding who takes the driver’s seat.  That is why politicians from Central and West senatorial districts are championing the agitation for power shift. The clamour underscores their  protest against perceived exclusion from political control. But, Kogi East, which accounts for 54 per cent of the state’s population, has described the claim as frivolous. According to the stakeholders from the zone, the claim is devoid of rationality and tantamount to twisting the truth to win emotional support for their cause.

Ahead of the primaries, many Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftains have defected to the APC. Their defection followed the defeat of the PDP during the last parliamentary elections. Many stakeholders have also alleged that the governor, Captain Idris Wada, has performed poorly. But, the governor has refuted the claim, saying that he has lived up to expectation.

No fewer than 28 aspirants are struggling for the ticket. They purchased nomination forms, following the release of the election time table for by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Thus, it is a crowded race for the Lugard House. According to observers, the APC primaries will decide the future of the party and the second term ambition of Governor Wada.

The aspirants include Prince Abubakar Audu, Senator Nurudeen Abatemi-Usman, Alhaji Sueiman Baba Ali, Dr. Tim Diche, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, Hon. Clarence Olafemi, and George Olumoroti, an engineer. Others are Alhaji Ado Gamji, Babatunde Irukera, Chief Lanre Ipinmisho, Mallam Yakuku Mohammed, Senator Alex Kadiri, Aliyu Jiya, Senator Nicholas Ugbane, Gen. Salihu Atawodi, and Mr. Rotimi Obadofin.

    Audu

He is the first elected governor of the state. He ruled the state twice, but under different constitutions. Audu ruled between 1992 and 1993 on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and between 1999 and 2003 as a chieftain of the defunct All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP). According to the 1999 Constitution, he is entitled to a second term.   Audu worked assiduously for the development of the state. But, in the last 12 years, the state, which is blessed with natural endowment and human capital, has been a shadow of itself.  When the former governor picked his nomination form, he promised to restore the pride of the state by putting in place first class infrastructure and attract more investments. Many people believe that he is competent. During his first term, he facilitated the take off of the Obajana Cement factory.

Audu is Kogi APC leader. He worked hard to deliver the state to President Buhari in the last election. According to his supporters, his frustration with the state of affairs motivated him to enter the race. His performances in office between1999-2003 remained his biggest selling point, Last week, many stakeholders from 21 local governments endorsed him in Lokoja.

Another key factor that may work in favour of the Igala prince is the failure of aspirants from the west and central districts to produce a consensus candidate.

The APC leadership may have tacitly endorsed him. Last week, a top chieftain said:”no coach changes a winning captain in the middle of a match.” His dynamism and experience in politics and business, his formidable structure and  followership are great assets.

    Abatemi-Usman

He hails from a reputable political family, his father having served as the deputy governor of Kwara State in the Second Republic. Between 2011 and 2015, he represented Kogi Central on the platform of the PDP. Abatemi-Usman is sociable, amiable and easy-going. But, he is not perceived as a formidable candidate.  Many believed that he won the senatorial election in 2011 as a compromise candidate, following a major disagreement that threatened to tear the party apart in the zone. One major setback for the former legislator is that he recently defected to the APC. There is no evidence that he has the backing of his district. During the week, the district endorsed Gamji, an oil magnet and philanthropist, as a consensus candidate. Abatemi-Usman cried foul, saying that the move was not popular. His supporters, who are agitating for power shift, however, believe that he has a chance.

    Baba Ali

Baba Ali was a commissioner in the defunct Audu administration. Many were surprised when he picked the nomination form because they thought that he was working for his former boss. A party chieftain said his approach and divided loyalty may have struck a wrong chord in the among the political leaders. But, his supporters believe otherwise. According to them, he has the right under the constitution to run.

A party source said that party leaders would have supported Ali for parliamentary ambition, if he had indicated his interest. That, to them, would have groomed him for the number one seat. The feeling is that he may not be able to withstand the arsenal of his uncle, Audu, at the primaries. Besides, foes have made efforts to blackmail him by boxing him into an identity crisis. Ali has not done much to effectively dispel the rumour that his father is from Bida, Niger State, and only his mother hails from Kogi. In 1999, some people protested against his nomination for a position in the State Executive Council, based on his identity. Another factor that may work against him is lack of financial muscle and limited political experience.

But, party members said that he is a likeable personality and hardworking politician who has shunned avarice. Politically, he is very promising. A source said that he may step down for Audu.

    Diche

He is an economist and a risk manager. He is a former local government chairman. Diche failed in his bid to represent his constituency in the House of Representatives before dumping the PDP.  According to sources, he relies on the goodwill of his former colleagues. However, this is debatable. Many former council chairmen who left the PDP for the APC appear to be working for Audu. If Diche fails to get the ticket, it will not draw the curtain on his political career. He may be a candidate for the future.

    Bello

Bello is a graduate of Accounting from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and the Chairman of Kogi Youth Arise Forum. He has a huge financial war chest and connection with big party wigs. But, to his surprise, the party leaders refused to endorse him. Instead, the leaders, led by ,Senator Ohiare picked Sanusi as a consensus candidate. Bello’s popularity is restricted to his district. he needs to extend his tentacles to other zones.  only central senatorial districts. A source said that he may dump the APC for the Accord, if he fails to get the ticket. But, his supporters said the rumour is baseless.

    Olafemi

Olafemi, fondly called Obembe by admirers, is one of the popular politicians from Okun. In the House of Assembly, he was a star legislator. He was the Minority Leader, and later,  the Speaker. He was also the Acting Governor. He is a respected gladiator from Kogi West. Olafemi is very close to the PDP chieftain, Jibrin Isah Echocho, who is running for governor. Many PDP chieftains have penciled down his name as the running mate before he dumped the party.  Therefore, he has more political enemies in the PDP. They believe he has destroyed their plan to pull the rug off the governor’s feet.

Olafemi faces some odds at the primary election, despite his popularity. He hails from Mopa Moro, a small local government. He is very popular at home. Yet, he failed to emerge as the consensus candidate of the marginalised Okun. Other aspirants do not see him as the  arrowhead of the minority Yoruba, which is always fighting for relevance. However, he may emerge as the APC running mate.

     Olumoroti

Olumoroti is a mechanical engineering graduate of Yaba College of Technology. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Calabar. He has many things going for him. He has the experience, energy and money. He is young and promising. The Kabba-born politician worked with Exxon/Mobil in Lagos. He is without any dent.

    Gamji

He is a new comer into the political arena. Two weeks ago, he picked his nomination form. But, to the surprise of other aspirants, he emerged as the consensus candidate of the Central District. His rivals are bitter. Thus, they have resorted to blackmail. His endorsement has implications. If he fails to get the ticket, the leaders may tip him for running mate.

    Irukera

He is a prince from Egbe. The son of the Elegbe of Egbeland, Yagba West Local Council, entered the race few weeks ago. His posters are attractive. But, no major stakeholder is associated with his aspiration. He told reporters in Lokoja that power should shift to foster equity and justice. He described himself as the man whom the cap fits. But, he has a bright prospect in politics. Many youths see him as a man of the future.

  • Lobi delighted with Federation Cup final ticket

Lobi delighted with Federation Cup final ticket

Lobi Stars have stated that they are delighted to make it to the final of the Federation Cup again this year after they defeated Enugu Rangers 1-0 at the Karkanda Stadium in Katsina yesterday to make it to their second final appearance in four years.

The Pride of Benue survived the scare of the Flying Antelopes who completed the match with only nine players after they had two of their players sent off for unsporting conduct.

Eche Idakwo scored the vital goal in the first half and the goal sealed the Makurdi Bomber’s place in the final of the competition.

The Team Manager of the club, Barnabas Imenger told SportingLife that the club’s place in the final of the Federation Cup was for their effort to ensure that they mark the election of the new governor,  Samuel Ortom with a victory in the competition they narrowly lost to Heartland in 2012.

He said Lobi would continue to work hard to ensure that they lift the trophy at the expense of Akwa United .

  • Who gets Edo APC ticket?

    Who gets Edo APC ticket?

Imasuagbon Kenneth ImasuagbonOsunbor Senator-Osunbor2The ranks of those seeking to contest next year’s governorship election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is swelling by the day. The APC leadership has put a caveat on building political structures by the aspirants, ahead of primaries.

Former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kenneth Imasuangbon, popularly known as ‘Rice Man’ because of his yearly distribution of rice to the poor, has joined the race.

Imasuangbon recently led his supporters to defect to the APC. He described his defection as the return of the prodigal son.

Other are Commissioner for Works, Osarodion Ogie, Deputy Governor Dr. Pius Odubu, Head of Oshiomhole’s Economic Team, Godwin Obaseki, Pharmacist Christopher Iyare, Chris Ogiemwonyi, and General Charles Airhiavbere.

A founding member and financier of the defunct Action Congress (AC), Imasuangbon was persuaded to step down for Governor Oshiomhole in 2007. He joined the PDP at a time the party was in disarray. He resurrected the PDP in the state in 2009 and reconciled the warring factions.

Imasuangbon lost the PDP ticket to Airhiavbere in a keenly contested primary in 2012. He has not relented in his bid to govern Edo State.

Speaking at Ewohinmi, Esan South East Local, when he defected to the APC, Imasuangbon said he returned to his base to support infrastructural development in the state.

Imasuangbon, who described the APC as a party for the progressive whose vision is to among other things eradicate poverty, said he supported the APC in the last general elections.

He said: “I joined APC since January this year but we have not had the opportunity to celebrate it due to the elections. But thank God we are celebrating today. I wish to reassure you the people of the state that your sacrifices would not be in vain. I  promised to continue to sacrifice my time, energy and resources as I have done over the years in adding value to the lives of Edo people.

“I am indeed proud of our Edo ancestry and the laudable works being done by our governor, Oshiomhole. Oshiomhole is our leader and mentor and we will continue to celebrate him for all he is doing for our people. My advice to Edo people is that we should remain steadfast in out belief in the creation of an egalitarian Edo State and that by so doing we will achieve the Edo State of our dream by the grace of God and good governance.”

APC leader in the locality Victor Eboigbe said the return of Imasuangbo would add value to the APC in Edo Central and the state as a whole.

“The party said it would disqualify any aspirant that flouted the party rules and that the party flagbearer would emerge through the party’s structure”

Eboigbe said: “ I was surprised that Imasuagbon left the house he built for others to inhabit. But we thank God that he is back to the house he built. He joined even before the elections and he worked for the party. So we call on elders of Ewohimi to pray for him so that he will not lose track again.

“He was one of the founding members of this party. We have always appeal to him to come back. We are happy he is back home. We are proud of him as a politician. We appreciate his coming.

“His coming will make a great impact. APC has had it tough in some local government areas in Edo Central. His coming to join us will have impact in the entire senatorial district. He is a man that is known across the state.”

The APC in Edo has barred aspirants from erecting political structures and hiring campaign offices ahead of the party primaries. The party said it would disqualify any aspirant that flouted the party rules and that the party flagbearer would emerge through the party’s structure.

Imasuangbon is back to a familiar terrain, but under another political party whose conduct pf party primaries is different from the PDP. Unfolding events in the coming months will determined, if he would make headway this time around.

  • Why Ajimobi got a return ticket to Government House, Agodi

Why Ajimobi got a return ticket to Government House, Agodi

After an exact prediction of how the Oyo State governorship election would go on this page last week, BISI OLADELE, examines the factors and strategies that helped Ajimobi break the second term jinx to become a man of history

When Abiola Ajimobi threw his cap into the political ring in 2003 after a fulfilled career in the oil and gas industry where he retired as the Managing Director of National Oil, little did the people of Oyo State know that the Ibadan-born Management expert was a man of history waiting to be unveiled.

After winning his first election as the senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District in 2003, Ajimobi gave the governorship contest a try in 2007. He fought a good fight but he did not make it, though he was adjudged to have won the election against the then candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Adebayo Alao-Akala. He tried again in 2011 and won convincingly.

His victory again in last Saturday’s governorship election produced a new man of history as he broke the second term jinx. The jinx had reigned for decades in the state like a strong curse, weakening the hands of previous governors in their battle to win a second term.

Other Southwest states – Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Ekiti – had experienced two-term governors but it never happened in Oyo State until last Saturday. It became so popular at a stage that it looked impossible for any governor to achieve even as residents sang it like a traditional song to let any governor aspiring for a second term realize the futility of his dream. In a way, it was seen as a mark of political awareness and sophistication of indigenes, sometimes giving them a sense of pride. But others saw it as a reason for the stunted growth the state has been experiencing since the return of democracy in 1999.

But Ajimobi broke the jinx at the weekend, defeating his two predecessors – Rashidi Ladoja and Adebayo Alao-Akala – who also fought tooth and nail to be the first to emerge the man of history.

He beat them for the second consecutive time to make history as the first governor to be re-elected back-to-back, sending the two of them to retirement from the state’s political landscape. He had polled 420,852 votes to beat Alao-Akala who polled 387,132 and Ladoja who scored 275,773 in 2011.

This time, he scored 327,310 votes to beat his closest rival, Ladoja who polled 254,520 and his immediate predecessor, Alao-Akala, who scored 184,111 votes to clinch the third position. Ajimobi’s APC also won 18 seats at the House of Assembly to operate at a comfortable position as the party with the vast majority. The combination of Accord’s eight seats and Labour Party (LP)’s six seats are less than half of the Assembly’s 32 seats.

The Assembly result was a clear departure from the 2011’s where the PDP and Accord secured a total of 19 seats, a development that forced Ajimobi to enter into an alliance with Accord to enjoy stability in the state legislature. This time, APC’s 18 seats totally leave the two other parties in the minority.

Interestingly, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) came fourth without winning any seat at the House of Assembly.

Ajimobi’s victory is particularly symbolic because all other political juggernauts in the state contested against him in the election. Unlike in other states, there were five major candidates for the governorship seat in Oyo State. The remaining four were top political influencers who are strong enough to swing the results. They include two former governors who still have large number of followers across the state, a former Senate Leader and a top business man. But Ajimobi defeated them all to write his name in history.

    The factors

    Ajimobi’s performance

Ajimobi’s performance in the area of peace and security, particularly in Ibadan, a city that used to be known for violence, was a major factor. His accomplishments in urban renewal, infrastructural development and environmental management also spoke for him in the election. His administration constructed quality roads across the state, revived the abandoned Agodi Garden which has now become the only standard government resort centre in the state as well as beautified the environment.

These resulted in APC gaining more votes in Ladoja’s strongholds in Ibadan such as Egbeda, Akinyele, Ona-Ara, Lagelu and Ibadan North East local governments which ultimately reduced the latter’s chances of recording unusually high number of votes in the areas.

Consequently, unlike in 2011, Ajimobi gave Ladoja a close run in such councils. For instance, in Egbeda, while Ladoja scored 15,811 to defeat others, Ajimobi polled 13,495. In Akinyele where Ladoja polled 14,793 to lead others, Ajimobi polled 12,367. The results were similar in Ona-Ara, Ibadan South East and Lagelu where Ladoja won. The only different council was Ibadan North East where Ladoja led Ajimobi with about 10,000 votes.

With the performance, Ajimobi sustained his popularity in Ibadan and Oke-Ogun.

    The Buhari factor

The consummation of the APC, its highly successful presidential primary and eventual victory at the federal level earned more votes for the APC in Oyo State. It contributed to the party’s strength and further weakened the opposition.

For the first time, some voters saw wisdom in allowing the state to enjoy the reward of being in a progressives’ party that produced the president. Going to the opposition, some argued, was needless and would further hinder the rate at which the state should develop.

This factor also helped in a way to produce three senators and 12 members of House of Representatives who returned to their constituencies to campaign vigorously for Ajimobi’s victory.

    Weak opposition

One important factor that helped Ajimobi rewrite history is that the opposition is weak in Oyo State. But the weakness is not about lack of criticism or monitoring of government activities. It is in the popularity or otherwise of its candidates.

His closest rival, Rashidi Ladoja is only popular in Ibadan, the state capital. His party, Accord, won in only one local government outside Ibadan in the just concluded governorship election. Even at that, his popularity is restricted to Ibadan less cities and Ibadan North East Local Government.

As for Alao-Akala, his popularity is restricted to Ogbomoso and a part of Oke-Ogun where he eventually won a House of Assembly seat.

The PDP in the state broke down completely when Akala and Seyi Makinde defected to other parties to contest as candidates.

Hence, for voters who might not like Ajimobi, many of them had problem of finding a better candidate in his opponents who could match the person of the incumbent governor and the strength of the APC whose popularity is soaring across Nigeria.

These and other factors contributed to Ajimobi’s unprecedented success.

    The strategies

Against expectation, Ajimobi attracted so much criticism and condemnation from opposition parties and a section of the populace. His urban renewal policy was singled out for virulent criticism. So was his decision to award some contracts to non-politicians. His second term ambition also pitted him against some others who believed that such ambition would affect theirs or negatively affect their future political career.

Realizing this midway into his four-year tenure, Ajimobi employed some strategies to beat his opponents.

Establishing direct relationship with traditional rulers, associations, groups and communities

From the time the governor realized that he was losing some party supporters to the opposition due to the reasons stated above, he developed a personal relationship with opinion leaders including traditional rulers, associations and groups. He invited them for meetings regularly, listened to their criticism and advice and borrowed from their wealth of advice.

He also visited communities, observing his Jumat service at their central mosques. After the service, the governor held town hall meetings with them, offering opportunity for heart-to-heart discussions on the needs of the communities. It also allowed locals to have a personal feel of their governor.

Ajimobi also visited popular markets, using the same technique to listen to market women, other traders and offered solution to their challenges where possible.

The meetings also offered him the opportunity to clear air on certain criticism and condemnation by the opposition.

Interest-free loans for traders and artisans

Realizing that women and artisans vote more than the elite, the governor deliberately facilitated interest-free trading loans for traders and artisans across the state. He gave over N500 million. They are to borrow a lump sum, use for some months and return to the coffer of the unions to enable others access it. The loans rejuvenated the business of many of them and endeared them to Ajimobi.

    Meeting specific needs of communities

Ajimobi deliberately enhanced economic strength of many communities to earn their support. For instance, while he could not establish a tertiary institution in Oke-Ogun which is the people’s topmost desire, the governor granted full autonomy to the existing Saki campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, renaming it Oke-Ogun Polytechnic. He also established a school of nursing at Kisi in Irepo Local Government area of the zone.

The governor also completed the permanent orientation camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) located in Iseyin which he described as the best in the country and also constructed the first dual carriage way in Iseyin.

In Ibarapa Zone, he granted full autonomy to the Eruwa campus of The Polytechnic, Ibadan as well as the Lanlate campus of the state’s college of education.  He also repaired the abandoned water works in Ayete.

In Ogbomoso, Ajimobi dualized the main road into the town in addition to those he dualized around the Soun’s palace. He also renovated the town hall.

In Oyo Zone, aside dualization of two major roads, the governor established an FM radio station under the state’s broadcasting corporation, renovated the town hall and constructed a silo for agricultural produce.

    Appointment of more politicians

Ajimobi ranks first among governors who patronized politicians with appointments. Aside creating new ministries which gave room for more politicians to be commissioners, the governor appointed liaison officers for each local government in addition to the 33 local government chairmen and caretaker committee members. He appointed so many special assistants and senior special assistants who were drawn equally from the five zones across the state. Ajimobi still gave appointments as late as January this year to those he considered important to his success.

    Women mobilizing women

His wife, Mrs Florence Ajimobi has been a strong mobilizer of the women folk since she became the First Lady in 2011. By starting off with programmes such as Ajumose Food Bank through which she distributes food to rural women and Educate a Rural Child with which she provides school uniform and books to rural school pupils, Mrs Ajimobi has had personal encounter with women and children across the 33 local governments. She also organizes regular Christian women prayer services for the state.

When election came, she found it so easy to have the ears of the women in large markets, local communities and across the two major religions. She devoted good time to mobilizing women all over the state for the cause of her husband.

She accomplishes this with the support of all appointed women in the government including wives of local government chairmen.

    Scaling down the ladder

Former leader of the party, the late Lam Adesina and business mogul, AbdulAzeez Arisekola Alao were strong pillars of support for the Ajimobi’s administration. They managed the political aspect of his leadership while he concentrated more on governance. But the two died before election came.

As soon as Arisekola died last year, Ajimobi threw his door open to all. He entertained all manners of visitors who wanted one form of assistance or the other. He maintained a personal contact with people on individual level, a decision that helped him gain a better insight about perception of his leadership.

Within a short time, a once distant performing but misunderstood governor became one that bonded closely with even the common man on the street.

    Teachers for their communities

One strategy that worked for the governor was the employment of 5,300 teachers at once. The beauty of the move was that teachers were recruited from their localities and posted there. The decision was taken to redress a similar gesture by the Ladoja administration in 2005 which created a serious problem of huge application for transfer back to their localities.

Aside providing employment on a large scale, the teaching and non-teaching staff filled several vacancies in public primary and secondary schools to bring an end to such complaints.

    Appointees’ input

All the appointees were last year given order to come up with strategies to mobilize support from their localities. By the time they finished their assignments after a few months local support grew tremendously for the administration.

The strategies created a sense of belonging for all stakeholders as the leaders became so close to the led, perhaps on a scale that is unprecedented in the history of the state.

    The outcome

As predicted last Wednesday, the results in each zone is given below.

    Oyo Zone

Ajimobi won by polling 35,857 votes to beat Ladoja who scored 22,661 votes. Others came behind them.

Lawyers drum up support for Buhari/Osinbajo ticket

The A group, ‘Lawyers for Change’has urged Nigerians to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), at the general elections.

The group promised to mobilise the people to endorse the ticket at the poll.

Speaking at the inauguration of the group in Lagos, the National Coordinator, Adesina Ogunlana, said the ticket “represents the best option now for the salvation of our country from the misrule of incompetent and selfish leaders.

He added: “That is why we identify and support credible participants in the political process, irrespective of ethnic, religious or party affiliation, who can lift our country out of her myriad of socio-economic and political problems and move her forward”.

Ogunlana, a former first Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, said when Osinbajo emerged as the vice presidential running mate to Buhari, Nigerians discovered the alternative route to power. He said the election will be very challenging, urging menof goodwill to rise to the occasion.

Ogunlana stressed: “That is why we have come together to let the people know that Yemi Osinbajo is not just any other presidential candidate. “We want Nigerians to know that the distinguished professor of Law and learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria(SAN) whom the APC has paired with Buhari for 2015 presidential elections is an exceptionally gifted, surpassingly decent and a very progressive-minded individual”.

“Our group is highly interested in and committed to the betterment of the country which we believe is bedevilled by many self-inflicted injuries as a result of which her prosperity, development and stability are badly compromised”, he said adding that what Nigeria needs now is urgent rescue from her myriad of economic and political problems.

    Suntai’s brother wins House ticket

Taraba State Governor Dambaba Suntai’s younger brother, Babangida, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representives flag bearer in Bali/Gassol Constituency.

Also, Acting Governor Abubakar Sani Danladi is the PDP senatorial candidate for  Northern Taraba Zone. A source said, although the ticket was reserved for the former acting governor, Garba Umar, the  party changed its mind, following protests by top party leaders.

Danladi, who hails from Karim-Lamido Local Government Area, has been Suntai’s deputy since 2007.

Danladi was impeached in October 2012 by the House of Assembly. But, the Supreme Court ordered his reinstatement in November last year. The ticket is a payback for Danladi, who initially refused to contest, added the source.

Babangida Suntai exuded confidence, saying that he will win the general election. He said he successfully resisted attempts to edge him out of the primaries.

He added: “I am very happy that I have gotten the ticket. It was really tough, but I forged ahead. They told me to run for the House of Assembly, but I refused. Others asked me to step down so that they will ‘settle’ me, but I forged ahead.”

Suntai was planning to run for the Senate after the expiration of his second term. But, the plane crash truncated his ambition. His associates said that he is happy that his younger brother became a parliamentary aspirant.

Babangida Suntai defeated the House of Representatives member, Haruna Manu, at the primaries.

However, Manu was elected as the running mate to the governorship candidate, Darius Dickson Ishaku.

  • Tinubu gets kudos for Buhari/Osinbajo ticket

Tinubu gets kudos for Buhari/Osinbajo ticket

The Coordinator of the Christian Conscience and the National President of the All Christian Leaders & Ministers Forum (ACLMF), Dr. Sam Ogedengbe, has hailed the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the party for their roles in the choice of its presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

Ogedengbe, in a statement by his media aide, Elder Cornelius Olopade, said the choice of the duo was commendable and a sign of good things to happen in the country.

He praised Tinubu for his sacrifice, contributions to the development of APC and sustenance of democracy. He also congratulated Gen. Buhari and Osinbajo for their emergence.

Ogedengbe said: “There is no doubt that the prayers of millions of Nigerians have been answered by God.  It is God that puts rulers on the throne. If He wants to answer people’s prayers, it will be done through the enthronement of good leaders.”

The ACLMF president, who is also the founder and general overseer of the Overcomers Pentecostal Assemly, pledged the support of his members and other Christians to the duo and other APC candidates in their aspirations to bail Nigerians out of its problems.

  • Ex-chairman secure APC ticket for Ojo Federal Constituency

Ex-chairman secure APC ticket for Ojo Federal Constituency

The immediate past Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Prince Yinka Durosinmi, has clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to contest next year’s House of Representatives’ election, to represent the Ojo Federal Constituency. Durosinmi received 204 votes out of a total of 458 votes to secure the ticket.

The victory was at the expense of the incumbent lawmaker representing the constituency, Hon.  Toyin Suarau, who got 97 votes.

Nevertheless, Durosinmi’s closest rival in the contest was the former Lagos State Auditor General, Alh. Muhammed Mubashiru Hassan. Also in the race was the immediate past Chairman of Oto-Awori Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert. Hassan and Robert received 113 and 44 votes respectively.

According to Durosinmi, who was overwhelmed by the outcome of the contest, it was a well-deserved victory, which amounts to a recognition of his six years of commitment to the development of Ojo Local Government. He thanked all delegates and the entire residents of the constituency for reposing such confidence in him.

“It is a well-deserved one and I know that it has to do with my works while in office as the local government chairman for the past six years. With this they have given me another chance to do even more and I will do no less,” he added.

Observers described the exercise as free and transparent.

  • Stiff contest for ticket in Benue

Stiff contest for ticket in Benue

In Benue State, Governor Gabriel Suswam will be handing over the mantle of leadership to another person come May 2015, having spent the maximum constitutional two terms of eight years in office. Whoever will take over from Suswam will be expected to carry the people’s hopes for improved welfare and security.

A kind of zoning arrangement has been in place over time in the state, even though it has mainly been among the two Tiv-dominated, hugely population zones of Benue North East and Benue North West. There is a growing recognition nevertheless that Benue South should be given the chance, since the two Tiv-speaking zones have governed in the persons of Senator George Akume (1999-2007) and Suswam (2007 till date). Benue South is largely Idoma.

But, the only obstacle to the Benue South agitation is the governorship aspiration of a Tiv sub-tribe, which also feels they have been alienated. This feeling is based on the fact that of the five families that make up the Tiv lineage, the Masev, Ihiarev, Nongov, collectively known as the MINDA, have not produced a governor of the state since its creation in 1976. The other four members of the Tiv family have ruled the state and so there is sympathy among the Tiv population for the MINDA to succeed Suswam before power could rotate Benue South.

Besides zoning, other factors expected to shape the emergence of the next governor of Benue State are political experience and educational background.

The APC’s chances in Benue this time around are fairly bright. Though Benue has been governed by the PDP since the return to civilian rule in 1999, the APC has been making incursions into the state over the years. So far, only three persons are contesting for the party’s governorship ticket for the forthcoming election. They are: the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Emmanuel Jime; retired Permanent Secretary, Akanga Audu; and the 2011 governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Prof. Steven Ugba.

    Jime

Given the circumstances surrounding the race for the APC ticket in the state, Jime who has become more or less the rallying point for the party in Benue State in recent times perhaps has the brightest chance in the contest. Barring any last minute political realignment in the fold, he looks set to get the ticket. This is because he appears to be the most sellable candidate for the party in next year’s governorship contest.

This could be gleaned from the massive support he enjoys from party members and the generality of the people in the state, who see him as a symbol of their yearnings and aspirations for change. For instance, he was surrounded by die-hard supporters three weeks ago when he arrived Makurdi, the Benue State capital, to pick up his nomination form.

A former speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly and two-time member of the House of Representative, Jime only recently defected from the PDP to the APC and he is viewed as the likely candidate of the party. Jime, who hails from Makurdi in the MINDA area, has promised to bring policies that would bring the majority of the people out of poverty, if he becomes governor.

    Audu

Audu, a former Permanent Secretary who served the current administration of Governor Suswan, is perceived as competent and qualified to govern. The big-time farmer who is also from the MINDA’s axis, equally served former Governor Akume.

But, critics say age is no longer on his side and that he may be a hard sell for the party during the election.

    Ugba

As a former governorship candidate of one of the legacy parties that formed the APC, Ugba equally has a good chance of picking the ticket. He gave incumbent Governor Suswan a good fight during the the last election in 2011 and by even by pursuing his petition to the Supreme Court.

But, observers say he may have lost the passion and drive for the contest, following his long-drawn out battle with Suswan. For instance, such observers argue that his presence when Jime collected his nomination form suggests that he might step down for the latter in the very last minute.

    Others

The former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Dr. Samuel Ortom, who has just transferred allegiance to the APC, may be a surprise beneficiary of the party’s governorship ticket. Ortom switched loyalty at the last minute, when he realized that his aspirations within his former party, the PDP, were under threat.

A grassroots politician, Dr. Ortom enjoyed wide support within the party and outside and therefore, stands a better chance of becoming the flag bearer of PDP in the state. He possessed the kind of charisma that is highly valued in political circles and his popularity cut across all the three senatorial districts of the state.

Even before now, he has always enjoyed the support from the opposition. Many have argued that he knows the job description better than other aspirants, having been an industrialist, entrepreneur and a farmer by extension.

Senator Joseph Waku also joined the contest for the governorship ticket of the APC two weeks ago. Waku left the PDP in 2003, after he had served as Senator on the platform of the party. He said he is in the race on the platform of the APC so that he would use the experience he garnered over the years to develop the state.
