Supporters seek automatic ticket for Buhari

Even as the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) insists on adopting what it describes as the modified direct primaries for the selection of candidates for next year’s elections, supporters of the former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, may have begun moves to ensure that the party gives automatic ticket to him.

The underground move, which is gaining momentum in the party, The Nation learnt, is causing a stir in the camps of other presidential aspirants.

At its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting attended by the former Nigerian leader and ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, APC said it would adopt the modified direct primaries for candidates interested in contesting any elective office, a position that has been widely applauded by members across the country.

A source in the party told The Nation that the leadership of the party is worried by feelers from the Buhari camp “that the emergence of Buhari as a candidate is a settled matter.”

The source quoted the spokesman for The Buhari Organisation (TBO), Osita Okechuku, as saying: “Given all the indices, APC already has a de facto presidential candidate in Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd). “If you go through the constitution of the APC,  Article 20 says for the nomination of candidate either for party offices or presidential election, you first explore consensus. If an agreement is reached through consensus, it has to be affirmed. If we go through that method, although we have a lot of quality people in APC, I do not know of any person the leadership of APC will tell Buhari to step down for.”

Another source said disregarding democratic process in the choice of APC’s presidential standard-bearer could drag the party into “a  deep and possibly political damage”, adding that the idea of “automatic adoption of Buhari or any other aspirant is undemocratic and will be resisted.”

The source said those scheming for “automatic ticket for Buhari are probably Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fifth columnists, who are planning the downfall of APC because of their fear that if allowed to pick its presidential candidate through the modified direct primaries, it is likely to win the presidential election.”

Buhari has reportedly said as a loyal member, he would abide by the decision of the party.

APC presidential ticket: Kwankwaso woos Okorocha

In a bid to get the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has sought the support of Imo State Governor and Chairman of the APC Governor’s Forum, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.

A delegation of the “Nigeria Project 2015” , the campaign organ of Kwankwaso, at the weekend visited Okorocha at the Government House in Owerri to get his support.

Okorocha, who is also nursing a presidential ambition, was said to have received the delegation warmly, urging members of the APC in the state to support Kwankwaso’s ambition.

He was said to have described him as one of the best presidential aspirants.

Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, the leader of the delegation and Kano State Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Dr. Abubakar Nuhu Danburan, said the meeting was impressive and encouraging.

He, however, noted that the governor told them that he was also nursing a presidential ambition, adding that they were impressed with his blunt response.

Heartland task players on Continental Ticket

Heartland General Manager Ibeh Okechukwu has urged the team to redouble its efforts towards securing a continental ticket at the end of the season.

The Naze Millionaires’ could have secured a continental place had they won the 2014 Federation Cup, but they were knocked out of contention for the ticket by Sharks in the Round of 32. The Owerri-based club’s objective now is to return to the continent by picking one of the three available Glo Premier League spots.

The Millionaires were beaten in their last two away games in Katsina Ala and Port Harcourt, and Ibeh, who addressed the players and coaches at the club’s house inside the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, emphasised the need for the players be alive to their responsibilities and ensure that they bounce back in style against Crown FC and in subsequent matches.

Appeals have also been made to Heartland fans to not give up on the club despite the back-to-back away losses at Katsina Ala and Port Harcourt.

The club’s Media Officer Cajetan Nkwopara said the players and coaches had promised to fix the problem starting with the game against Crown FC on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Heartland’s MacMarcel Obioha has sustained an injury and will be out for few days. The former Gombe United defender was clipped on the back of his heel during a practice match against Pakat FC.

2015 Cup of Nations ticket: Babayaro banks on Enyeama

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Emmanuel Babayaro has continued to praise the heroic performances of Eagles stand-in Captain and first choice in goal Vincent Enyeama at the last World Cup in Brazil.

He has again tipped the Lillie Football Club of France star to again lead the Eagles to defend their crown in the next edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco next January.

He emphasised on the number of saves the former Enyimba International goalkeeper made in each of the four matches Nigeria played in Brazil before the team was ousted by France in the round of 16.

“I always ask my journalist friends and some group of people some questions any time they say we (Nigeria) tried at the last World Cup held in Brazil. I asked them did you see how many saves Enyeama made in the match against Argentina and other matches played at the World Cup? Imagine if it was a regular goalkeeper what the score would be.

“In each of the four matches the Eagles played at the World Cup Vincent Enyeama made not less than six (6) to eight (8), 100 per cent close saves,” Babayaro disclosed.

He, however, threw his weight behind the Lillie of France star to continue to lead the Eagles to future successes.

“Enyeama will surely continue from where he stopped at the Brazil 2014 World Cup and help the country get the ticket for the Africa Cup of Nations holding in Morocco next year,” the Atlanta Olympics gold medalist told Sportinglife.

    • Beat Bayelsa Utd 3-1 on penalties • To play Prime FC next week

Gateway United have set a date with fellow National League campaigners, Prime FC after the Ogun State reps defeated Bayelsa United 3-1 on penalties in a Round of 16 game of the Federation Cup played in Abuja.

The Restoration Boys scored first through Sheriff Bashir and were coasting home to victory before allowing Gateway United back into the game.

Gateway United capitalised on an infringement close to Bayelsa United’s vital area and Francis Olanrewaju did not hesitate in netting home the leveller from the ensuing free kick in added on time of the second half.

Regulation time thus ended 1-1 but during the penalties, Bayelsa United could only convert one spot kick through Femi Oladapo, while Gateway United scored all of theirs to zoom into the quarter final.

  • 3SC EYE TOP FOUR FINISH FOR CONFED CUP TICKET

3SC EYE TOP FOUR FINISH FOR CONFED CUP TICKET

SHOOTING STARS Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan says its target is to finish in the first four of the Globacom Premier League (NPFL) and earn a Confederation Cup ticket next season.

3SC Coach, Akeem Busari, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ilorin after the team lost 0-2 to old western arch-rival, Kwara United, in Ilorin. NAN reports that the defeat had further lowered 3SC to the 14th position on the log.

Busari said that although he was not satisfied with the position on the log, he was still optimistic that 3SC would meet up the target of finishing in the first four.

“We are not satisfied with our position for now. We really want to be among the first four. But here we are today. The league is not yet over; we still have 19 matches with double home matches. The team has double home matches in the next round of the league, where I can assure you we will gain back our first round losses,“ he said.

The coach rated the league high, claiming that it had improved from the previous seasons. He charged stakeholders to maintain the tempo and allow the league to progress with sincerity of purpose.

Reacting to the 0-2 defeat, the Oluyole Warriors’ handler claimed that the Afonja Warriors– as Kwara United are fondly called– were lucky to have converted their chances. He pledged to get back the points when the Ilorin side would visit Ibadan for their week 20 return leg match of the Glo League.

According to Busari, his boys got their chances, but were unable to make better use of them.

NAN reports that Adamu Yahaya’s double was enough to seal home victory for the hosts.

  • Issues in Anambra 2014 PDP governorship ticket

Issues in Anambra 2014 PDP governorship ticket

Andy Uba was sworn in as Anambra Governor after 2007 election. But he was removed about two weeks later through a court order which faulted INEC for conducting the poll in the state when current Governor Peter Obi’s tenure was still running. The tenure expires next year.

Now Andy, who in April 2011 contested and won a Senate seat and he is chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, is warming up to return to the seat he vacated. He is not deterred by the setback of 2007.

Only recently, while making known his ambition to gun for the coveted office inside Enugu Sports Club, Uba was quick to put the matter straight to doubters. Looking straight-facedly at reporters, he said: ”In 2007 when I ran for governor, I had a vision for Anambra State, within the few days I stayed, people got an insight into my plans; my vision was to change the face of Anambra. I was pushing for a plan to transform Anambra but unfortunately, it didn’t work.”

Almost immediately after, youths, under the aegis of Omambala Youth Forum, announced their resolve to support the governorship ambition of Senator Andy Uba. They did so at a meeting in Otuocha. The forum comprising youths from the four council areas of the state namely: Anambra East, Anambra West, Ayamelum and Oyi, said their decision to support Uba followed his record of achievements since he went into public office.

According to the forum chairman, Innocent Offordile (Eselu Aguleri), who presided at the meeting, though Uba represents Anambra South in the Senate, youths in the four local government areas which are in Anambra North would always remember Uba’s gesture to the people of the area during last year’s flood disaster.

Said he: ”We have declared support for Senator Uba because he has told us officially about his governorship ambition. He has done it before and we believe that he will do it again.”

Also, in his recent writing, vibrant commentator, Emeka Oraetoka, recalled the entire saga that heralded the sacking of Uba from office in 2007 vis-à-vis Governor Obi’s comment on the zoning formula for Anambra State preferring his successor to emerge from Anambra North.

He went a step further by stating what has now become an obvious popular position on the matter.

“On the issue of governorship election in 2014, the questions the people of Anambra State are asking Peter Obi are:  Does he want the governorship election in 2014 zoned to Anambra North based on his interpretation of equity? What happens to the fellow that was asked to vacate office 17 days after being sworn-in for an offence he did not commit? Has justice been done to the zone or possibly the local government area where Andy Uba hails from?  Which, out of equity and justice, ranks higher in order of priority?

“From the point of view of politics, what constitutes equity? Is Peter Obi implying that all registered political parties in Nigeria must cede their governorship positions to Anambra North, come 2014? Is he as well saying that Anambra North has no electable candidate[s]? Or is the governor saying that the people of the zone are weak in all ramifications and therefore cannot compete politically in the state?” Oraetoka asked.

Uba sometime ago organised a Town Hall meeting for his constituents in the seven council areas that make up his Senatorial district to explain his activities in the Senate and to subject himself to their scrutiny.

“I believe that the people you represent at whatever level must come first in what you do because it is not by accident that they entrust their mandate in your care. The mandate one holds in trust for the people is sacred and the product of a collective conviction that he is worthy both in character and ability to represent their interests,” adding that no leader worth his salt should take the people he leads for granted.

Reflecting on his eventful stay at the Senate so far, Uba had told his constituents that apart from sponsoring four bills and co-sponsoring 12 motions, he had attracted not less than N16million projects to the area. He clarified that all the projects were domiciled in the 2012 budget.

    Ahead 2014

Ahead next year’s governorship election in the state, Anambra known for its vibrant politics, has thrown up tens of aspirants apart from Uba looking forward to succeeding incumbent Obi. Among the fine crop of such personalities are Comrade Tony Nwoye, Paul Odenigbo, Chukwuma Soludo, Nicholas Ukachukwu and Emmanuel Anosike, all from the same PDP fold as Uba. Besides, there are those from the other parties. They include: Senator Chris Ngige, ACN; Senator Annie Okonkwo, APC; Ifeanyi Uba, Labour and Hon. Uche Ekwunife, APGA, among others.

No doubt, given the peculiarities of Anambra politics, the list is sure to be longer as the countdown reduces from months to weeks. The attendant drama, tension, intimidations too, and upsets and near-upsets, all recurring features of the politics of Anambra State add up to give the four-yearly event its uniqueness. But one good thing about the foregoing is that by the time the chicken comes home to roost, all frayed nerves somehow will find some way to smoothen out.

PDP ticket Of the array of aspirants from the Anambra PDP fold who seek to succeed Obi, it appears Uba stands a good chance, just as some others.

When a newspaper (not The Nation) sounded out residents of Awka and Uga area of the state last week, it was clear that the senator from Anambra South stood a chance as PDP prepares to nominate their choice for Anambra 2014.

“I really don’t see it that way. I know with the people and party members by my side and God honouring us, I look good to pick the PDP ticket. But I know also that other contenders are there; and they are no push-overs. We are all trying to see how we can serve our dear Anambra State in the office of governor. We pray things work out,” Uba said in that publication.

Even as he exudes confidence, the senator recognises the fact that other contenders have the right to aspire to the same office. However, like he always underscores, promotion comes from God.

  • NFF TO KESHI: Semi-final ticket or…

NFF TO KESHI: Semi-final ticket or…

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have revealed that Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi signed a clause in his contract that will ensure he takes the team to at least the semifinal of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Keshi was handed a four-year contract by the NFF last year, and it was initially not clear if he was handed a target for AFCON.

But head of the NFF Technical sub-committee Chris Green revealed that Keshi was given a semi final target for the 2013 AFCON.

“We gave Keshi a semifinal target for AFCON 2013, Green said on a live television conversation on Wednesday night.

Green however added that Keshi may be retained if he fails to meet his target.

“We may allow him (Keshi) to continue if we see that the inability to meet such target was not his making.

“If we see that he fails based on ill luck, he’ll be allowed to continue,” Green said.

The team departed for Accra on Thursday, from where they will connect a flight to Portugal to complete camping for the African championship.

It would be recalled that former coach Samson Siasia was sacked because he failed to meet his target of qualifying the team for the 2012 Nations Cup.

  • Buhari-Tinubu ticket solution to Nigeria’s problems, says ACN chieftain

Buhari-Tinubu ticket solution to Nigeria’s problems, says ACN chieftain

A chieftain of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Kano State, Dr. Baffa Baba Dan-Agundi, has provided a solution to the leadership problem in Nigeria.

He urged the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the last general election and two-time presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), General Muhammadu Buhari and the National Leader of the ACN, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to team up and rescue the country from the clutches of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) misrule.

Dan-Agundi, a former legal adviser to the ANPP but now an ACN member, told our reporter in Kano yesterday that the former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Tinubu and General Buhari are the messiahs to salvage the country.

He said for Nigerians to experience development and transformation, the duo must forget their political differences and unite to save the country from the mal-administration of the ruling party.

Dan-Agundi, a former sole administrator of the Kano Municipal Local Government and a House of Assembly aspirant on the platform of the ACN, noted that only a merger between the ACN and CPC can unseat the PDP, adding that the solution to Nigeria’s problems lies in the hands of Tinubu and Buhari.

He said: “The only person the masses in the North respect and believe in is General Buhari. Just like Tinubu is the only person people in the Southwest believe in and respect. So the ticket of the two politicians will be excellent for Nigeria. It is the only way to unseat the PDP.

“What I want them to do is to prevent anybody from interfering in their differences because Buhari is the leader of the CPC, while the leader of the ACN is Tinubu. The merger talks should be between the two political bigwigs.”

Dr. Dan-Agundi suggested that a rotational system between the duo should be adopted whereby Buhari would contest as the presidential candidate, while Tinubu would be his running mate, and at the end of his tenure, it would be the turn of Tinubu. He noted that there should be a written agreement to avoid betrayal of trust.

“If Buhari is not willing to contest the presidential election, let him tell the entire world, because from all indications, the majority of Nigerians believe in Tinubu because he can be entrusted with the leadership of the country. He did well in Lagos, which Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola is building on,” Dan-Agundi said.

According to him, some people view the ACN as a regional party, “but to be candid, it is not, as Tinubu unconditionally financed our campaign as Northerners. He has done a lot for us by sponsoring the ACN candidates in the North.

“For example, I am not a Yoruba, but Tinubu has done a lot for me. Nobody can equal what he has done for me. ACN is not a regional party as far as I am concerned. If we have different views, we can have different platforms, just as we can agree and disagree. It’s all politics.”
