“Arrived in Tokyo yesterday for the 9th TICAD Summit. This summit is about strengthening Africa–Japan ties, attracting sustainable investments, and unlocking innovation to benefit our people. • Ooni, Osun traditional rulers urge Tinubu’s intervention in local government allocation crisis

Ooni, Osun traditional rulers urge Tinubu’s intervention in local government allocation crisis

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, alongside the Traditional Rulers Council of Osun State, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the lingering crisis over control of local government councils and the withholding of their allocations.

The crisis, fuelled by disputes between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite conflicting court rulings, has stalled governance at the grassroots level.

In a statement issued on Tuesday after a meeting of monarchs at his palace, Ooni Ogunwusi, who serves as chairman of the Osun Council of Obas, lamented that the situation has crippled activities across the 30 local government areas and the Area Office in the state.

“The traditional institutions and communities across Osun have been negatively impacted by the nonpayment of funds as and when due,” he said. “Traditional rulers, being natural leaders and closest to the people, are critical stakeholders in nation-building and community engagement, and they must be empowered to perform optimally through a functioning local government administration.”

The Ooni stressed that traditional rulers are apolitical fathers of the land, noting that their only concern is for society to function effectively for the benefit of all, especially the most vulnerable.

He urged President Tinubu to, as a matter of public importance, resolve the issues delaying the prompt release of local government allocations across Osun State.

He explained, “It is an open secret that the traditional institutions across the country are being upheld through the five percent deductions from the Local Government allocation, and when this is not available, it will be almost impossible for us to serve our people adequately.

“It amazes us daily to see secretariats have suddenly become inactive because the allocations meant for their smooth running have been withheld for several months, over issues that have nothing to do with the common people currently suffering the brunt.”

He added, “Our markets, community roads and other responsibilities of the Local Government are suffering badly, and we, as traditional rulers, cannot afford to pretend like we do not see this rot.

“It is on this note that we call on Mr. President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to intervene as father of the nation. We will be glad if Mr. President can hear the cries of common community dwellers across our farmlands and villages, suffering hugely from the total deactivation of local government activities for several months.

“Either political or judicial, we wish to implore Mr. President that resolving the crisis will benefit Osun State greatly, especially her rural communities and also reenergize the traditional institution across the land to continue to complement the Asiwaju Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government in the prompt delivery of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Ooni boasted that President Tinubu can resolve whatever might have been responsible for the blockade of Osun State local government allocations.

Appoint credible man as next INEC chairman, Group tells Tinubu

As the tenure of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, ends in December, a pro-democracy group, the African Democratic Youth Congress (ADYC), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to appoint a successor with unquestionable integrity and capacity.

The Director-General of ADYC, Prince Muritala Haliru Dantoro, made the appeal in Abuja on Tuesday during a press briefing on the state of the nation and the public presentation of the group.

He stressed that getting Nigeria’s electoral process right begins with appointing a credible figure to head INEC, noting that the president has to put the country’s interest above partisan considerations in making the appointment.

“If the president is going to choose the next INEC chairman, he should put Nigeria first. Someone who has integrity, who has the interest of Nigeria first, and not given to primordial or partisan interests,” Dantoro said.

The group also decried the rising trend of vote buying in Nigerian elections, describing it as undemocratic and criminal. It called for stricter penalties to curb the menace ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dantoro further charged Nigerian youths to step forward and take leadership roles in the nation’s political space, saying their active participation is crucial for strengthening democracy.

“We must understand that vote buying is not merely a transaction; it is a betrayal of our collective future. It is the tool that gives power to the wrong people – individuals who prioritise personal gain over public service and who will inevitably fail to bring desperately needed development to our communities.

“They buy their way in, and they will only serve themselves.”

Dantoro urged youths in the country to educate and give orientation to the grassroots on the grave danger of vote buying.

“Let’s go into every village, every street, every home, and enlighten our people about the power of their vote and the destructive consequences of selling it. Let us expose this electoral fraud that cuts across for what it is: a direct assault on the progress and development of our nation.”

Challenging the youths to rise and take positions of leadership, the National Coordinator of the group, Mrs. Ruqayya Lamido Dodo, said the current generation is tired of being spectators in a country that belongs to them.

“For decades, we have heard the same tired promises. We have been called the ‘leaders of tomorrow’, a phrase that has become little more than a polite way to sideline us from today’s critical decisions. Our generation is tired of being spectators in a nation that belongs to us. We are tired of seeing our potential wasted, our voices ignored, and our future held hostage by a political system that has failed us repeatedly.

“Today, we are here to declare that the African Democratic Youth Congress, the ADYC, is changing that narrative. We are not just a youth wing; we are the vanguard of a new movement. We are not waiting for tomorrow; we are building our nation today. We are the architects of a new Nigeria.”

    • First Lady: RHI lifting women in informal sector into prosperity

Through its High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, the United Kingdom (UK) yesterday lauded the economic and trade reforms being implemented by the Tinubu Administration.

The reforms, though painful, were necessary to get the economy back on track, the envoy said.

He described them as bold, brave and positive steps that have been creating new opportunities.

Montgomery spoke yesterday when he, in the company of British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, visited First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

The High Commissioner spoke days after a similar commendation came from the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, who visited the President at work, lauded the sweeping economic reforms, describing them as pivotal in restoring economic stability and laying the groundwork for sustainable growth.

According to the former finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy, the government should accelerate growth and cushion the reform-induced cost-of-living crisis.

She said the introduction of safety nets would cushion the effects of the necessary reforms, for which President Tinubu deserves credit.

In a statement yesterday by the Senior Special Assistant to the First Lady on Media, Busola Kukoyi, Montgomery said the UK government was impressed with the reforms, which, though difficult, have been necessary to reposition Nigeria’s economy and expand avenues for trade and investment between both nations.

He also highlighted the positive impact of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the First Lady’s flagship programme, which he praised for delivering empowerment to women across critical sectors such as education, health, and humanitarian services.

“These reforms and initiatives have already led to stronger trade partnerships between our two countries,” Montgomery said.

He further noted that the UK was closely following Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process, especially proposals for special seats for women in the National Assembly.

The First Lady assured the delegation that both the government and RHI would continue to pursue policies and initiatives that address the challenges of Nigerians.

She emphasised that women’s empowerment remains a central focus of the initiative, particularly in the informal sector, where lives are being directly impacted.

“I believe we can help each other if we really show concern.

“RHI focuses on women’s empowerment in the informal sector.

“These are the ones whose lives we are touching directly,” the First Lady was quoted as saying.

On women’s political participation, Senator Tinubu acknowledged concerns over the dwindling number of women in the National Assembly.

She pledged to support efforts to reverse the trend, stressing the importance of ensuring that women are well-informed in choosing representatives who can deliver results.

“We have to know the right people to represent us, who can do the work, and that is what we have to enlighten our women about,” Mrs. Tinubu added.
