Southern Kaduna commends Tinubu, Uba Sani over efforts to tackle insecurity

The Southern Kaduna People have commended President Bola Tinubu and Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, for what they described as sustained efforts to mitigate insecurity in the state and across the country.

The commendation was contained in a press conference addressed on Thursday in Kaduna by the National President of the group, Engr. Tabara Samuel Kato, following recent bandit attacks in parts of the state.

Kato specifically applauded Governor Uba Sani for visiting the Kurmin Wali community in Kajuru Local Government Area, which was attacked by bandits on January 18, describing the visit as historic and reassuring to the people.

According to him, Governor Sani is the first sitting governor to visit the community, noting that the governor immediately directed the Commissioner for Works to address the poor state of the access road and promised the provision of a hospital, enhanced security presence and other critical infrastructure.

The group also commended President Tinubu and Governor Sani for what it described as their “untiring and concerted efforts” in deploying security mechanisms to protect lives and property since assuming office, while acknowledging that some challenges remain inevitable.

While expressing appreciation, the Southern Kaduna People urged both the federal and state governments to intensify efforts toward securing the release of kidnapped victims and to carry out a comprehensive crackdown on armed bandits and kidnappers operating in Kaduna State and other parts of the country.

Kato further praised President Tinubu for ongoing developmental initiatives nationwide, with particular commendation for the recent appointment of retired General Christopher Gwabin Musa as Minister of Defence.

He noted that Nigerians from different backgrounds are increasingly calling for the consideration of Gen. Musa as a potential presidential running mate to President Tinubu, a move he said the Southern Kaduna People appreciate and support.

The group reaffirmed its resolve to continue supporting President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in all their efforts, stressing its commitment to peace, security, and development in Southern Kaduna and Nigeria at large.

Tinubu approves oil drilling at Tongeji Island, Olokola Deep Seaport take-off — Abiodun

    • …new seaport to be known as Blue Marine Economic Zone

Ogun State’s long-standing aspiration to become an oil-producing state is set to materialise following the approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the commencement of commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island in Ipokia Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this on Thursday while receiving the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, alongside senior officers of the command, during a courtesy visit to his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Abiodun also revealed that President Tinubu has approved the immediate take-off of the Olokola Deep Seaport project located in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, marking a breakthrough after years of anticipation surrounding the multibillion-dollar port development.

He noted that both projects are of special interest to the President. He noted that while the Olokola Deep Seaport would significantly decongest the Lagos ports, commercial oil drilling at Tongeji Island would promote inclusion and economic empowerment for residents of the coastal communities.

“Let me share with you that Mr President has approved the commencement of commercial oil drilling operations at Tongeji Island, and going forward, you will begin to see a lot of activities there,” the governor said.

“Our proposed Olokola Port, which has been on the drawing board for several years, is now back on the table. I want to sincerely thank Mr President because this is solely his initiative. In the last two weeks alone, we have held several meetings on Olokola, and Mr President has clearly expressed his desire to see the port become a reality.”

Governor Abiodun added that President Tinubu specifically directed that construction of the port should be far advanced between now and next year, stressing that the project presents a strong opportunity to decongest the Lagos ports, particularly with the coastal road now providing an alternative logistics corridor.

He further disclosed that the new seaport would be known as the Blue Marine Economic Zone, reflecting its strategic coastal location and vast economic and commercial potential.

The governor commended the Nigerian Navy for establishing a Forward Operations Base at Tongeji Island, noting that the naval presence would help prevent infiltration from the neighbouring Benin Republic and discourage any attempts to undermine Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He also disclosed that his administration is working to provide basic amenities for residents of the island in line with efforts to improve living conditions and support emerging economic activities.

Governor Abiodun appreciated the Nigerian Navy for its contribution to the state’s security architecture, noting that collaboration among security agencies has helped sustain the relative peace currently enjoyed in Ogun State.

Describing Rear Admiral Mustapha as a seasoned and accomplished officer, the governor expressed confidence that Ogun State would experience enhanced security and progress under his leadership.

“We are happy that someone with your antecedents, background, training, and experience is occupying this position at this time. You are a round peg in a round hole,” the governor said.

Earlier, Rear Admiral Mustapha described Ogun State as critical and strategic to Nigeria’s national security, disclosing that the naval outpost at Tongeji Island would be upgraded to a Forward Operations Base due to the area’s significant oil potential.

He explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening synergy between the Nigerian Navy and the Ogun State Government, adding that part of his responsibility was to safeguard Nigeria’s border with the Republic of Benin and prevent criminal elements from gaining a foothold in the state.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday swore in the newly appointed Chairman and 37 Commissioners of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) at the State House in Abuja.

The ceremony, which took place in the Council Chambers of the State House, saw the new FCC Chairman, Hulayat Omidiran, sworn in alongside commissioners representing the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

Omidiran, 59, succeeds Dr. Muheeba Dankaka.

A former two-term member of the House of Representatives, Omidiran represented the Ayedaade/Irewole/Isokan Federal Constituency of Osun State between 2011 and 2019.

An indigene of Ikire in Osun State, she holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and brings to the office wide-ranging experience spanning legislative work and sports administration.

She previously served as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Sports and held several roles within football administration, including membership of the Nigeria Football Federation board, chairperson of the NFF Women’s Football Committee, membership of the FIFA Women’s Football Committee, and service on the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.

She is also the founder of Omidiran Babes Football Club, a female football team established in Osogbo, Osun State, in 1997.

President Tinubu appointed Omidiran on August 11, 2025, in a dramatic reversal after the Presidency had earlier that day announced the reappointment of Dankaka for a second five-year term.

Moves to undermine Tinubu’s re-election will fail, says APC chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, Chief Suffy Uguoji, has declared that schemes to frustrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid are doomed to fail. He described them as unrealistic, driven by personal ambitions within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a statement, Uguoji said ADC’s prominent figures were more focused on grabbing the party’s presidential ticket than building a cohesive opposition.

‘’Attempts by southern politicians—allegedly backed by northern interests—to block Tinubu’s second term lack credibility and are collapsing under internal rivalries ahead of the ADC’s presidential primary.

“Those pushing this agenda underestimate the political consequences,” Uguoji said.

“Any attempt to short-change the Southwest will be resisted. Fortunately, these plots are failing due to lack of unity.”

He said denying Tinubu a full eight-year tenure would be unjust, especially after former President Muhammadu Buhari completed his without Southwest’s resistance.

‘’Equity demands Tinubu finish his term,’’ he added, urging 2027 aspirants to wait until 2031 for national stability.

Ugoji hailed Tinubu’s economic reforms as bold and effective, citing falling staple food prices.

These gains, he said, had reshaped the political terrain, disadvantaging opposition parties.

He dismissed ADC’s social media buzz as disconnected from grassroots realities, predicting crises if its primary election sidelined aspirants like Atiku Abubakar or Peter Obi—fracturing the party and sealing Tinubu’s victory.

On APC preparations, Uguoji highlighted nationwide mobilisation by pro-Tinubu groups like the Asiwaju Mandate Group (AMG), led by Asiwaju Olumuyiwa Asagunla.

‘’Structures linked to the Minister of Interior, Hon. Bunmi Tunji-Ojo, are also in place across Ondo State, from wards to polling units.

With strong performance, organisation and opposition disunity, Tinubu’s re-election is secure,’’ he insisted.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is firmly positioned to secure a second term in office, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, declared yesterday.

Outlining strategies he believes would give the President an edge in the next election, Yilwatda cited growing youth support, policy delivery, party expansion and data-driven mobilisation.

He spoke in Abuja on Tuesday night at the APC Northwest Youth Mobilisation Meet-and-Greet programme, convened by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, who hails from Sokoto State.

Party leaders at the event said that, contrary to opposition narratives, tangible policy gains are restoring public confidence in the ability of the Tinubu Administration to reposition the country from decades of decline towards growth and stability.

Among party chieftains and government officials in attendance were the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu; Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmud; Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Tanko Sununu; Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel; and members of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Northwest, led by their Director, Michael Massuan, among others.

Yilwatda said President Tinubu’s performance and expanding grassroots support have made the APC “the largest political party in Africa,” adding that the party’s acceptance is rising nationwide.

“Every day we keep on receiving more governors. Every day we keep on receiving more National Assembly members.

“We receive market women. We receive farmers. We receive students,” he said.

He noted that young Nigerians are driving the party’s growth, stressing that “the party belongs to the young people.”

He added that 48 per cent of APC members in the Northwest are aged between 18 and 35.

At the national level, those between 18 and 49 account for about 83 per cent of registered members.

Yilwatda credited key social policies for boosting public confidence, particularly the student loan scheme.

“Almost a million young Nigerians now have access to the student loan.

“At the same time, we give you N20,000 every month to support you in school, which has prevented students from dropping out due to financial hardship,” he said.

On healthcare and welfare, he noted that over four million people, mostly farmers, traders and rural artisans, are being added to the health insurance scheme, while digital transfers have reached six million households in six months.

The APC chairman said the party’s new electronic registration system would enhance targeted campaigning.

“With this, I can estimate how many votes I will have before the election starts.

“So far, we’ve hit over three million. We are hopeful to hit 10 million,” he said.

Urging loyalty, Yilwatda said: “This party is your biggest asset. The President is our biggest asset. Let us stand by this party.”

He insisted that political appointees must openly support the party, adding: “There is no one called a technocrat. Once you are given a political appointment, you are a politician.”

He praised Goronyo as a model appointee who combines governance with party mobilisation.

Goronyo, the convener of the event and former Director of Youth Mobilisation for the Northwest in 2023, said President Tinubu has demonstrated inclusive leadership and that Nigerians would reward his “tenacity and commitment” with broad support in 2027.

He cited major infrastructure projects, including the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, Trans-Sahara Highway, and the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway.

He noted that their spread reflects a deliberate effort to connect regions and stimulate economic growth.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said meaningful change requires leaders and citizens to think creatively.

He added that criticism of government is normal but must be countered by effective communication of achievements.

He described President Tinubu as a leader who “has the youth at heart”.

Olawande cited education support, stipends, the Nigeria Youth Academy and empowerment initiatives.

He disclosed plans to reform the NYSC to ensure participants acquire skills and post-service support.

Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, urged Northwest appointees to demonstrate loyalty and unity.

She stressed that no one should hide behind claims of technocracy while benefiting from political appointments.

She said the administration remains focused on delivering its agenda, particularly in the North and Northwest.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of awards to deserving youth members in recognition of their dedication, commitment and outstanding performance.

…as party leaders rally North West youths ahead of 2027

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has declared that President Bola Tinubu is firmly positioned to secure a second term in office, citing youth support, policy delivery, party growth, and data-driven mobilisation as the pillars of the ruling party’s 2027 strategy.

Yilwatda spoke in Abuja on Tuesday at the APC North West Youth Mobilisation Meet and Greet in Abuja, convened by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, where party leaders at the event said that, contrary to opposition narratives, tangible policy gains are restoring public confidence in the ability of the Tinubu administration to reposition Nigeria from decades of decline toward growth and stability.

Several party chieftains and government officials attended, including the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari Ahmadu; Minister of State of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Mariya Mahmud; State of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Tanko Sununu; former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (rtd); APC Youth Leader, Dayo Israel; and several PCC North West members led by the Director Michael Massuan, among others.

Addressing party leaders, youths, and political appointees, Yilwatda said President Tinubu’s performance and expanding grassroots support have made the APC “the largest political party in Africa,” adding that the party’s acceptance is rising nationwide.

“Every day we keep on receiving more governors. Every day we keep receiving more national assembly members. We receive market women. We receive farmers. We receive students,” he said.

He noted that young Nigerians are driving the party’s growth, stressing that “the party belongs to the young people.”

Stating that 48 percent of APC members in the North West are aged 18–35, he added, “At the national level, people between the ages of 18 and 49 form about 83 percent of our registered members. It means the young people own this party”.

Yilwatda credited key social policies for boosting public confidence, especially the student loan scheme, saying, “Almost a million young Nigerians now have access to the student loan. At the same time, we support you with N20,000 every month to support you in school, which has prevented students from dropping out due to financial hardship”.

On healthcare and welfare, he noted, “We are adding over four million people to the health insurance scheme, mostly farmers, traders and rural artisans, while digital transfers have reached six million households in just six months.”

The APC chairman also said the party’s new electronic registration system would guide targeted campaigns.

“With this, I can estimate how many votes I will have before the election starts. So far, we’ve hit over three million. We are hopeful to hit ten million,” he said.

He urged loyalty, stressing, “This party is your biggest asset. The President is our biggest asset. Let us stand by this party.”

He, however, insisted that political appointees must openly support the party, stressing, “There is no one called technocrats. Once you are given a political appointment, you are a politician”.

He praised Goronyo as a good example of a political appointee who combines governance with party mobilisation.

Goronyo, the convener of the meet-and-greet and former Director of Youth Mobilisation for the North West in 2023, said President Tinubu has demonstrated inclusive leadership. He argued that Nigerians would reward the President’s “tenacity and commitment” with broad support in 2027.

He cited major infrastructure projects, including the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, Trans-Sahara Highway, and the long-delayed Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway, now being executed in sections. He said the spread of the projects reflects a deliberate effort to connect regions and stimulate economic growth.

Goronyo urged members to support the ongoing registration drive and intensify mobilisation, noting that the North West delivered the largest share of votes in the last election.

He called on appointees to work as a united force to ensure President Tinubu’s re-election while assuring the youth leaders of support for the task ahead.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, said change requires leaders and citizens to think creatively and “outside the box,” adding that criticism of government is normal.

He said it is the duty of the ruling party to communicate its achievements.

He described the President as someone who “has the youth at heart,” saying government programmes are designed mainly for young Nigerians, citing education support, stipends, the Nigeria Youth Academy, and youth empowerment initiatives.

He added that the Ministry is working with agencies under the “Digital for All” agenda and disclosed plans to reform the NYSC to ensure participants gain skills and post-service support.

While acknowledging the sacrifices Nigerians are making, he expressed confidence that reforms would soon yield results and urged party members to defend the administration’s record.

On her part, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, urged North West appointees to demonstrate loyalty and unity.

She said no one should hide behind claims of being a technocrat while benefiting from political appointments, adding that all appointees must actively support the President and contribute to electoral success.

She said the administration is focused on fulfilling its promises, especially in the North and North West, and called on stakeholders to stand with the President and ensure the delivery of his agenda.

The highlight of the night was the presentation of awards to deserving youth members in recognition of their dedication, commitment, and outstanding performance.

  • Ekiti youths to stage 10,000-man march for Tinubu, Oyebanji

Ekiti youths to stage 10,000-man march for Tinubu, Oyebanji

Youths in Ekiti State are planning a 10,000-man solidarity march in support of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Biodun Oyebanji ahead of the 2027 general election and governorship election in the state.

Commissioner for Youth Development, Adesola Gold Adedayo, disclosed this on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti while featuring on a current affairs programme aired by local radio stations.

Adedayo said the planned march slated for Friday, January 23, 2026, was aimed at aggressively mobilising support for President Tinubu and Governor Oyebanji in appreciation of their purposeful, youth -friendly and inclusive leadership.

Adedayo, who also serves as the coordinator of the All Progressives Congress electronic registration exercise in the state, noted that youths constitute about 70 per cent of registered voters, according to figures from the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He described the youth population as a strategic electoral force capable of determining the outcome of elections, adding that Governor Oyebanji had earned their loyalty through deliberate investments in youth development.

Adedayo said Governor Oyebanji’s policies in agriculture, particularly the establishment of farm settlements and dormitories for commercial farming, had provided employment and economic opportunities for young people.

The initiative, he said, had transformed rural communities into productive hubs, while youth farmers reportedly shared over N1bn as proceeds in December last year.

The commissioner cited empowerment programmes, support for persons living with disabilities, and the state’s free education policy as some of the interventions that had endeared the administration to the youth.

Adedayo added that the policies had ensured that children from poor backgrounds were not forced out of school due to financial constraints.

Adedayo urged youths not to limit their political participation to social media activities but to collect their Permanent Voter Cards and vote during the election, saying that online support alone would not translate into electoral victory, urging young people to be actively involved in the democratic process.

He added that the 10,000-man march would serve as a veritable platform to demonstrate the youths’ readiness to support President Tinubu and Governor Oyebanji’s re-election, whom he described as a lover and promoter of youth development.

On governance, the Commissioner said that the achievements of the Oyebanji administration were evident in areas such as road infrastructure, agriculture, sports development, labour relations, security, arts and culture.

Adedayo also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his commitment to repositioning the country on the path of economic recovery and prosperity.

He said that the President’s policies and reforms had created opportunities for states, including Ekiti, to attract federal support and investments that would drive development at the sub-national level.

Contractor seeks Tinubu’s help on 22-year-old Kaduna Eastern bypass

The  contractor handling the Kaduna Eastern Bypass, Eksiogullari Construction Company Nigeria Limited, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, to release funds for the completion of the long-delayed project, describing it as critical to unlocking Kaduna and the entire North-West corridor.

The appeal was made on Monday during a Federal Ministry of Works inspection and tour of emergency and special intervention road projects across Kaduna State.

Project Manager of Eksiogullari, Yunus Salihu, made the call while briefing reporters at the Chikaji Bridge Section of the Eastern Bypass, which he identified as the major bottleneck preventing the road from functioning optimally.

Salihu said the Eastern Bypass, awarded in 2002, is a virgin road project that has suffered persistent funding and security challenges for over two decades, slowing down its completion despite significant progress.

He explained that the Chikaji Bridge, which spans about 324 metres, is a critical structure on the corridor, adding that all pillars for the bridge have already been cast.

According to him, completing the bridge would unlock the functionality of the Eastern Bypass, which already has about 34 kilometres executed and partially opened to traffic.

“The major challenge here is funding. Once this bridge is completed, the Eastern Bypass will function fully and Kaduna will have a permanent gateway,” Salihu said.

He noted that the complexity of the project, which involves cutting through hills, waterways and difficult terrain, requires sustained funding to connect bridges seamlessly to the main carriageway.

Salihu appealed to President Tinubu and the Minister of Works to intervene, stressing that timely release of funds would finally bring the 22-year-old project to completion.

The inspection team had earlier assessed ongoing works on the Abuja–Kaduna Highway, where contractors were found mobilised, before moving through the Eastern Bypass via the Kachia Interchange and stopping at the Chikaji Bridge.

Aside from the Eastern Bypass, the Ministry commissioned several emergency and special intervention projects, including the rehabilitated 4.3-kilometre Taban Sani Road in Makarfi Local Government Area, the Mahuta NNPC Pipeline Road to the Nigerian Army Post Service Housing in Chikun LGA, and the Sabo Rail Bridge Road to Command Junction.

At the Mahuta NNPC Pipeline Road, Chief Resident Engineer, Sadiq Maccido, explained that safety restrictions around the pipeline limited asphalt work in some sections, though 1.2 kilometres had been completed inward.

The Sabo Rail Bridge Road to Command Junction was also inaugurated. Officials described it as a major relief to residents following years of traffic congestion and road failure.

The delegation also inspected the Kaduna Western Bypass, where about 19.57 kilometres of carriageway have been completed, with other sections still under construction.

Jonathan Obrusu, representing Dangote Group, said the company remained committed to delivering the project in line with federal standards, noting that the bypass would decongest Kaduna metropolis and improve regional traffic flow.

The team further inspected the 77-kilometre Pambeguwa Road, completed with guardrails and safety installations, and scheduled for inauguration within one month.

In Zaria, attention shifted to the Wusasa-Turunku-Maraban Jos Road, Phase One, which has reached about 68 per cent completion, while Phase Two, valued at about N30 billion, has been awarded to extend the road from Pambeguwa to Jos.

Federal Controller of Works in Kaduna State, Ulagu Loveday, said the inspections covered critical corridors, including the Zaria-Funtua-Sokoto Road, where significant progress has been recorded on bridges, drainages and binder courses.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, Northwest Zone, Abdullahi Yakasai, said the exercise was in line with President Tinubu’s directive to ensure value for money and quality delivery of federal infrastructure projects.

Yakasai stressed that the Eastern and Western Bypass roads would permanently ease traffic congestion in Kaduna and boost economic activities across the Northwest.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to monitor contractors closely, but urged that funding challenges, particularly on the Eastern Bypass, be addressed urgently to end its 22-year delay.

  • ‘Tinubu governs under constitution freely adopted by Nigerians’

‘Tinubu governs under constitution freely adopted by Nigerians’

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it has read ‘Monday Lines’, a column by Lasisi Olagunju, with keen interest.

The party in a statement yesterday in Ogba by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said: ‘’While we respect the columnist’s literary depth and rich deployment of folklore, metaphor and intertextual allusions, we must firmly state that poetry, however elegant, must never be mistaken for political accuracy or historical honesty.

‘’The attempt to equate Nigeria’s constitutional democracy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with the brutal military dictatorship of Sani Abacha is not only intellectually lazy, but also historically indefensible. It is an exercise in false equivalence that sacrifices truth on the altar of rhetorical flourish.

‘’Abacha ruled by decrees, proscribed political parties, detained journalists, silenced labour unions and governed without elections. President Tinubu governs under a constitution freely adopted by Nigerians, was elected through a competitive multi-party process, and remains subject to judicial review, legislative oversight, and the verdict of the electorate. To conflate the two is to trivialise the suffering Nigerians endured under military rule and insult the intelligence of a politically conscious populace.

READ ALSO: Tax reform: Lessons for national health financing

‘’The columnist laments alleged fractures within opposition parties and hastily attributes them to some imagined inferno lit by the ruling party. This conveniently ignores a basic democratic principle: political parties are voluntary associations governed by their own constitutions. Internal disputes, factionalism, and leadership crises are not new phenomena, nor are they exclusive to Nigeria or to this administration. To blame the APC for the chronic ideological emptiness, weak internal democracy, and perennial litigation that plague opposition parties is to outsource responsibility where introspection is required.

‘’Democracy does not guarantee the survival of opposition parties; it guarantees their freedom to organise, contest, win or lose. The APC neither appoints opposition leaders nor drafts their constitutions. Political failure should not be laundered as victimhood.

‘’We find it curious that the article invokes scholars like Samuel Huntington while ignoring the central thesis of The Third Wave: that democratic consolidation is strengthened not by sentimental alarmism, but by institutions, elections, and civic responsibility. Nigeria today has functioning courts that routinely rule against government, a National Assembly that debates and amends executive proposals, and a media landscape that publishes some of the harshest critiques of government without fear of midnight knocks. These are not the features of dictatorship, no matter how attractively wrapped in metaphor.

‘’The recurring obsession with ‘one-party state’ rhetoric is equally misplaced. Nigeria has over a dozen registered political parties, opposition governors, opposition lawmakers, and opposition-controlled states. That some governors or politicians choose to align with the ruling party is not evidence of coercion; it is evidence of political choice – often driven by performance, pragmatism, or survival instincts shaped by voter expectations. Defections are not coups.

‘’We also reject the insinuation that national consensus around leadership or reform automatically translates to tyranny. In moments of economic transition and structural reform, broad elite convergence is not unusual. It happened in post-war Europe; it happened in emerging Asian democracies. Consensus is not dictatorship; it is sometimes the price of stability.’’

Lagos APC said it acknowledged that democracy thrived on robust opposition, constructive dissent, and constant vigilance.

The party added: ‘’However, dissent must be grounded in facts, not fear; in analysis, not apocalyptic projections. Nigeria’s democracy is not perfect – no democracy is – but it is neither suspended nor on life support.

‘’History teaches us many lessons, but one stands out clearly: democracies are weakened not only by authoritarian overreach, but also by reckless rhetoric that delegitimises institutions and erodes public confidence without evidence. When everything is described as tyranny, nothing is.

‘’Nigeria did not fight military rule to romanticise it in hindsight. Abacha is not alive in 2026. What is alive is a democracy is still finding its rhythm – noisy, imperfect, contested, but constitutional. And that distinction matters.’’
