JUST IN: Tinubu in closed-door meeting with Kano Governor, Yusuf

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently in a meeting with the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the State House, Abuja.

The Kano governor arrived at the State House some minutes past 4 pm and was led towards the President’s office by the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.

The closed-door meeting comes amid speculation over a possible defection by Governor Yusuf, who was elected on the platform of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It will be recalled that the national leader of the NNPP, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, had earlier dismissed reports suggesting that he approved or endorsed any planned defection by the Kano State governor, insisting that no such consent was given.

Political watchers say talks around the reported defection have been ongoing for weeks, though sources suggest negotiations may have stalled over disagreements, including whether the governor would be granted an automatic ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The speculation has also reportedly deepened tensions between some of Governor Yusuf’s supporters and loyalists of his political mentor, Kwankwaso.

The meeting with the President might not be unconnected with the planned defection.

Details of the meeting are expected to emerge later.

NCC opens spectrum bands to support Tinubu’s 1 trillion dollar economy

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has commenced consultative engagements with critical stakeholders to open up new spectrum bands in support of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for a trillion-dollar digital economy.

The NCC’s engagements/presentations are on the development of the Spectrum Roadmap 2026–2030, the guidelines for opening the lower 6 GHz band for Wi-Fi 6, and the guidelines for opening the 60 GHz license-exempt band for multi-gigabit wireless systems.

According to the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, Dr Aminu Wada Maida, the demand for spectrum is not only rising in the telecommunications industry, but its availability has also become imperative for Nigeria’s accelerated growth and economic expansion.

Addressing participants on Monday during the opening ceremony of the Consultative Forum at the Digital Economy Complex, Mbora, Abuja, Dr Maida said the Forum would create avenues for robust deliberations that would shape Nigeria’s digital future. Dr Maida was represented by the Head of Spectrum Administration, Engr Atiku Lawal at the event.

Dr Maida said the frameworks contained in the presentations reflected the commitment of the NCC towards building a communications ecosystem that is inclusive, innovative, resilient, and future-ready.

He therefore encouraged participants and stakeholders to make critical inputs and contributions that would align with the vision of the present leadership for a robust economy.

He said, “At the heart of our sector lies an essential national resource: spectrum. Spectrum may be invisible, yet it is indispensable. It powers the connectivity behind our mobile phones, our broadband connections, our satellite services, emergency communications, financial platforms, and smart technologies.

“Behind every video call, every digital transaction, every online classroom, and every connected device in Nigeria, there is a spectrum at work.

“But the spectrum is also finite. Demand for it is rising rapidly, driven by data-intensive applications, cloud services, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and the expanding digital needs of our economy.

“These innovations require more spectrum, smarter planning, and more flexible regulatory approaches.”

The NCC boss said the Spectrum Roadmap 2026 to 2030 was developed to ensure faster speeds, wider coverage, better service quality, stronger innovation, and greater inclusion, assuring that more investments would be attracted to the economy with the development.

He added that by opening the bands, the NCC was preparing the country “for the data demands of tomorrow—not just on mobile networks, but across homes, campuses, businesses, healthcare facilities, and public spaces.”

In his keynote address, the Executive Commissioner, Technical Services, of the NCC, Abraham Oshadami, said the management of spectrum requires transparency, prudence, and collaboration.

“The way we plan, assign, and regulate spectrum will determine our nation’s ability to achieve our target, stimulate innovation, and strengthen global competitiveness”, Engr Oshadami said.

Oshadami, who was represented by Engr Maigana Gidado, the Head of Fixed Networks and Converged Services in NCC, noted that Nigeria would continue to make meaningful progress in mobile broadband penetration, 5G rollout, and improvement in quality of service following the new openings and opportunities in the telecommunications ecosystem.

Alleged cyberbullying of Tinubu: DSS’ trial of Sowore begins January 22

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed January 22 for the commencement of trial in the cyber-bullying case brought against the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Justice Mohammed Umar chose the date shortly after Sowore was re-arraigned on a two-count amended charge.

In the amended charge filed by the Sowore is accused of making a false claim against the person of Present Bola Tinubu by referring to him as a criminal in a post he made on his X and Facebook accounts.

The defendant is accused of contravening the provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act, 2024.

In the amended charge, Sowore is listed as the sole defendant.

At the commencement of proceedings on Monday, prosecuting lawyer, Akinlolu Kehinde (SAN), applied to withdraw the earlier charge, which had three defendants – Sowore, X Incorp (formerly Twitter), and Meta (Facebook) Incorp.

Kehinde prayed the court to strike out the charge and the names of X Incorp (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook) Incorp as defendants in the case, a request Justice Mohammed Umar granted and struck out the charge and the names of the other two defendants.

When the first count of the amended charge was read to Sowore by an official of the court, he initially claimed not to understand the count, but later changed his mind after a brief consultation with his lawyer, Marshall Abubakar.

Sowore proceeded to plead not guilty to the two counts on the amended charge.

Further proceedings were, however, stalled when Abubakar objected to the move by Kehinde to call the first prosecution witness.

Abubakar argued that the prosecution has not provided the defendant with sufficient materials to enable him to prepare for his defence.

He cited Section 36(6) of the Constitution and Section 379(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). He said his client was entitled to be served with the names of the prosecution’s witnesses, a summary of their testimony, among others.

Although Kehinde faulted Abubakar’s arguments, insisting that the prosecution had done all that was required of it, Justice Umar directed him to provide the defendant with summaries of what his witnesses were coming to say during the trial.

    The amended charge reads:

*That you, Omoyele Sowore, adult, male, on or about the 25th day of August, 2025 did knowingly or intentionally send a message by means of a computer system or network, to wit: your official “X” (formerly Twitter) handle page, @YeleSowore, wherein you posted the following message/tweet: “This criminal GofficialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there Is NO MORE corruption under his regime In Nigeria. Adamawa progressive elders council endorses Tinubu for 2027

The Adamawa Progressive Elders Council (APEC) has formally endorsed President Bola Tinubu for re-election come 2027.

Reaffirming its loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its commitment to the unity and progress of the party in Adamawa State, the APC support group said Tinubu has done well enough to merit a second term.

The resolution to support Tinubu’s re-election was reached at a well-attended meeting of the Council held in Yola, where it was reiterated that the Elders Council was constituted to, among other things, build a formidable APC structure capable of delivering President Bola Tinubu and all APC candidates in the 2027 electoral cycle.

In a communique signed by the Vice Chairman of the Council, Senator Abubakar Girei and the Secretary, Mrs Olvadi Madayi, the Council which comprises  prominent APC members drawn from all 21 local government areas of Adamawa State, commended President Tinubu for appointing the Leader of the Party, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, to what it described as the most sensitive and strategic position in government.

It also expressed appreciation for the various federal appointments extended to Adamawa indigenes, and resolved to cascade its activities to local government and ward levels to strengthen grassroots engagement, facilitate early identification of disputes, and ensure prompt conflict resolution.

Senator Araraume backs Tinubu for second term

Senator Ifeanyi Araraume has declared support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Araraume, who spoke to newsmen at his Isiebu country home in Okigwe LGA, said Tinubu has the constitutional right to seek a second term, insisting that the President has performed well and deserves another four years to consolidate ongoing reforms.

He cautioned against what he described as inaccurate narratives about the ruling party and the nation’s political structure, stressing that Nigeria is not a one-party state.

According to him, Nigeria operates a multiparty democracy with more than 40 registered political parties, a development he said clearly reflects democratic freedom and political plurality.

Araraume said every Nigerian has the freedom to join any political party of choice, noting that members who joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) were neither forced nor coerced.

He explained that political realignments are not new in the country, recalling that similar movements occurred during the era of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Araraume said the APC functions as one family, with collaboration across the federal, state, and local government levels, adding that the party remains united behind President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He pointed out the APC has commenced an electronic registration exercise, urging existing members to validate their membership while encouraging new entrants to register.

Speaking on Imo State, Araraume said Governor Hope Uzodimma is serving his final tenure, expressing confidence that whoever the party presents would be competent and acceptable.

He said the party would support its eventual candidates across all levels in the state, adding that while there is always room for improvement in governance, issues identified would be constructively addressed.

Araraume also recalled his role in Tinubu’s presidential campaign in 2023, saying the president appointed him then as national director of trade and economy for Southern Nigeria, covering the South East, South South, and South West, noting that if given another opportunity, Tinubu would deliver even stronger performance.

Don’t distract Tinubu, group warns detractors

A group, The National Political Study Group, has warned detractors not to distract President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by bringing to the front burner any nomination politics ahead of 2027.

The group, in a statement by its leader, Emmanuel Aro, dismissed insinuations that the President is under pressure over the choice of running mate for the next general election.

Also, a presidency source said the president is focussed on his mandate and addressing what he described as a wrong perception that Christians are being singled out for attacks across the country.

The source said efforts to correct this narrative are beginning to yield positive results.

Aro, who spoke in Lagos, said although legitimate scheming by politicians have started, the president is not somebody who can be intimidated, manipulated and pushed around by those nursing ambition for relevance.

Also, the Presidency source, who reacted to a report in one of the national dailies which claimed that the President was under pressure to field a Christian running mate in 2027, rather than retain the Muslim-Muslim ticket with Vice President Kashim Shettima, said people are only peddling rumours.

He said: “Look, we are aware that some persons want the VP replaced. Initially, they wanted a fellow Muslim to replace him. But now that they have seen that the arrangement is not flying, they want to latch on the US sentiment to push their new agenda of having a Christian running mate. But I can tell you for free that it will not work.

“Any APC person plotting that does not mean well for Mr. President and our party.  Tampering with the ticket as it is will do us more harm than good in the North, especially if ADC eventually sticks by its original plan to field a northern candidate. If it is about winning strategy, we are better the way we are because replacing Shettima with a Christian may affect our chance in the entire Northeast and votes from some critical states in the North.”

He added: “The US angle to the story is all hoax. The US posturing is changing already. Besides, are we no longer believers? If we run with a Christian candidate and God does not want us, if the US like, let them put everything they have into it, it will still not work. So, we should stop playing God.

“Our President is smart and strategic.  He has not told us he wants to replace Shettima. We are aware, like you said that some of the presidential aides, in some of their conversations appear to be buying into the idea of having a Christian run with Tinubu. But the truth is those doing that are majorly Christians. Therefore, I can understand their sentiments. However, on Shettima’s birthday, when Mr. President released what looked like a ‘shut your mouth’ statement.”

President Tinubu had during the vice president’s 59th birthday, described him as loyal deputy, insisting that his choice as his running mate in 2023 was never a mistake.

The president said: “The birthday presented another unique opportunity to celebrate you, my brother, co-traveller and Vice President, as you mark another birthday.

“Since we embarked on this journey, united by the shared vision of building a more prosperous nation, your courage, sense of duty, tenacity, determination, and belief in Nigeria’s greatness have remained unshaken.

“You served the people of Borno, your home state, excellently as Governor for eight years and later as Senator representing Borno Central in the National Assembly. In both roles, you showed that leadership is service, not privilege, even in the face of immense challenges.

“However, your service to Nigeria, fueled by your passion for democracy, good governance, and economic development, has been even more remarkable.

“I deeply appreciate your vibrancy, loyalty, partnership, and support as my deputy. In choosing you then as a partner, I selected competence and other qualities that Nigeria could depend on.”

President Tinubu added: “Every day, as Vice President, you have justified that choice by strengthening our work, bringing fresh perspectives, and upholding our commitment to Nigerians. Your dedication reassures me that I did not make a mistake in choosing you as my deputy.

“Together, we have begun to lay the foundations of the Renewed Hope Agenda. From securing new global partnerships across the Atlantic to driving food security and investment reforms at home, your partnership has been integral to our success.

“In the months ahead, as we unlock new trade corridors and deliver more schools, hospitals, and jobs, our partnership will continue to yield results that Nigerians can see and feel. We must continue to work towards the full realisation of the Renewed Hope Agenda, which will foster prosperity in the country and enhance the living standards of our people.

“Our relationship transcends official duties. It is a bridge across regions and traditions, united in purpose and service. You remind us of what is possible when Nigeria comes first — an example worthy of emulation by those who aspire to lead.”

  • Tinubu’s economic reforms tough but necessary, says Ex-Ondo commissioner

Tinubu’s economic reforms tough but necessary, says Ex-Ondo commissioner

A former Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Ondo State, Hon. Bamidele Ologunloluwa, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu means well for Nigerians with the economic reforms being implemented by his administration.

Ologunloluwa stated this while speaking with reporters in Akure on Sunday, describing the President’s reforms as bold, deliberate, and necessary to reposition Nigeria’s economy for sustainable growth.

He acknowledged that many Nigerians were currently grappling with hardship occasioned by policies such as the removal of fuel subsidy and foreign exchange unification, but insisted that the measures would yield positive results in the long run.

According to him, the reforms, though painful, were designed to address the fundamental weaknesses of the nation’s economy.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu means well for the country. The economic and structural reforms he has embarked upon are bold and deliberate. While they may be painful at the moment, they are aimed at fixing the fundamentals of our economy and will, in the long run, bring smiles to the faces of Nigerians,” Ologunloluwa said.

The former commissioner urged Nigerians to exercise patience with the Tinubu-led administration, stressing that meaningful reforms often come with short-term challenges before delivering long-term benefits.

Hon. Ologunloluwa, who has declared interest in contesting the House of Representatives seat for Akure North and South Federal Constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, said effective representation at the National Assembly was key to ensuring that the President’s policies translated into tangible benefits at the grassroots.

He added that if elected, he would work to attract more federal presence and opportunities to his constituency, especially at a time when major economic reforms were being implemented.

The APC chieftain also highlighted his experience in governance and party administration, noting that he had served in several capacities, including Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Political Matters and Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency.

“My aspiration is anchored on a clear commitment to responsive governance, effective representation, and measurable development that directly benefits the people,” he said.

He stressed that his ambition to represent Akure North and South Federal Constituency was driven by a desire to deliver people-oriented representation rather than personal interest.
