NAPS hails Tinubu for extending Customs CGC Adeniyi’s tenure

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a one-year extension for the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, describing the move as a bold statement in support of performance-driven leadership.

In a statement on Saturday, NAPS President, Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, said the extension, which stretches Adeniyi’s tenure till August 2026, reflects a presidential decision anchored on merit, vision, and national continuity.

Oghayan said the polytechnic student body, which represents over 28.1 million students across Nigeria, sees the president’s action as a reinforcement of excellence and a rejection of political convenience over professional competence.

“CGC Adeniyi is not just a customs officer. He is a reformer, a digital innovator, and a symbol of purposeful public service. Extending his tenure is not mere politics; it is strategic governance,” Oghayan stated.

He noted that under Adeniyi’s leadership, Customs revenue rose from ₦202 billion monthly in 2023 to over ₦343 billion by 2024, with a record ₦6.1 trillion generated in the last fiscal year a feat he described as “leadership by results.”

The NAPS president also highlighted several other reforms attributed to Adeniyi, including the launch of the B’Odogwu digital clearance platform, digitised cargo release procedures, and the Time Release Study, which he said has curbed corruption and delays at ports.

Oghayan praised the CGC’s border security interventions, from seizure of illegal arms to combating petroleum product diversion and illegal wildlife trade, adding that his leadership proved Customs is more than a revenue agency, “it is a national security asset.”

The association further hailed Adeniyi’s commitment to training, noting that under his watch, capacity-building was prioritised and recognised by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), with student-oriented programmes incorporated into Customs operations.

On the global stage, Oghayan described the CGC’s election as Chair of the World Customs Organization Council as a proud moment for Nigeria, “exporting not oil, but administrative competence.”

He concluded by applauding President Tinubu for choosing “competence over convenience, and reform over routine,” stressing that students across Nigeria stand with leadership that delivers.

Tinubu moves Surveyor-General’s Office to Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the relocation of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGoF) from the Ministry of Works to the Presidency.

The President gave directive on Thursday during the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting, stating that the move was to enhance coordination and execution of key legacy infrastructure projects, particularly the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry Super Highways.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, confirmed the development while briefing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Idris explained that the relocation of OSGoF is to streamline geospatial data management and enable closer presidential oversight of national mapping and land administration efforts.

While no further details were given, the move is seen as part of the administration’s broader reform strategy and reflects its growing emphasis on geospatial intelligence in national planning, infrastructure development, and security architecture.

Saint Lucian Prime Minister defends Tinubu’s visit, says criticism “shameful and disgraceful”

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia has strongly defended the recent visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to his country, describing criticism of the visit as “shameful and disgraceful,” and condemning what he called politically motivated attacks laced with the residue of colonial self-hate.

Speaking in the capital, Castries, during his 2025 Emancipation Day address, Prime Minister Pierre took a firm stand against detractors who opposed the Nigerian leader’s state visit.

He argued that the backlash, driven by partisan interests and subtly supported by the opposition, reflected deeper psychological scars from slavery.

“The vilification and denigration of the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, by a politically motivated group, tacitly supported by the opposition party, was another demonstration of the harmful effects of the legacy of slavery: self-hate and a readiness to accept African people and their descendants as inferior. That behaviour was nothing short of shameful and disgraceful”, Pierre stated.

The Prime Minister noted that if a visiting head of state had come from a different part of the world, the reception would have been markedly more respectful.

Turning to the substance of the visit, Pierre emphasized the significance of President Tinubu’s presence in Saint Lucia, describing it as an honour for the island nation and a milestone in fostering deeper bilateral and regional relationships.

“To the government and people of the Republic of Nigeria, the government and people of Saint Lucia have been honoured by the visit of your President and look forward to establishing and deepening economic, social and cultural ties with your country,” he said.

He disclosed that during Tinubu’s visit, several memoranda of understanding (MOUs) were signed to strengthen cooperation in areas such as education, culture, economics, and social development—not just with Saint Lucia, but across the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

“My administration will do its best to ensure that those MOUs bear fruit at the earliest opportunity,” Pierre pledged, reiterating his government’s commitment to Pan-Africanism and solidarity among peoples of African descent.

New media should foster unity, not division, says Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged young Nigerians to use the power of new media to foster unity, not division, and to build a digital space that reflects the values of compassion, discipline, and patriotism.

Speaking yesterday at the opening of the two-day Progressive Digital Media Summit on “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development” held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja, the President said new media has evolved from being a supplementary channel to becoming a central driver of national growth and transformation.

“The theme of this gathering, ‘Unveiling the Central Role of New Media in National Development’, perfectly captures the spirit of our time and the aspirations of our nation. Across Nigeria, we are witnessing a remarkable surge of creativity and ambition, especially among our youth. From developing innovative digital platforms to building vibrant online communities, young Nigerians are demonstrating extraordinary ingenuity and a steadfast commitment to progress. You are not waiting to be invited into the future, you are actively building it,” Tinubu said.

He noted that new media is now instrumental to driving economic growth, civic engagement, and social transformation in Nigeria.

He said, “It is creating jobs, empowering millions of young people, breaking down traditional barriers to political participation, and giving voice to communities that were previously unheard.”

Tinubu acknowledged the rising impact of the digital generation.

“Your generation has seized this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so too must our shared sense of purpose and responsibility.

“I urge you to continue harnessing these platforms for the greater good. Build businesses that employ others. Create content that uplifts and inspires. Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” he said.

The President also warned of the dangers of misinformation in the digital age.

He said, “We live in a world where disinformation spreads rapidly. Before you amplify anything, pause. Let Nigeria’s digital space reflect the values that bind us together, connection, compassion, discipline, and patriotism.

“Patriotism is not about slogans or political theatre. It is measured by what we contribute to the common good. Every app you design, every story you tell, every brand you build, it all tells the world who we are and what we stand for.”

To support the growing digital space, Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to building infrastructure and enabling innovation.

He said, “This administration understands the importance of this digital frontier. That is why we are investing strategically in digital infrastructure and broadband expansion. Internet access must no longer be a luxury for a few, it is a right for all Nigerians.

“We are supporting innovation through initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Forum and nurturing the startup ecosystem by promoting growth-oriented policies and minimizing unnecessary regulation. At the same time, we are committed to cybersecurity. Every Nigerian has the right to be protected, both physically and digitally.”

The President described Nigerian youths as the country’s greatest asset.

“Young people remain our most important investment. Your ideas, energy, and commitment to development are among our nation’s greatest assets,” Tinubu said.

He urged them to go beyond personal branding with their various platforms.

He said: “Use your platforms not just for self-expression or retaliation, but for problem-solving. Build solutions that meet the needs of our people. Mentor others. Champion digital literacy and promote accountability in every part of society.

“Let your leadership be defined by integrity. Let your digital footprint reflect the very best of our nation. Let your actions tell the story of a generation that didn’t wait for permission to lead, but stepped forward with clarity and courage.”

“Nigeria’s path to prosperity will be shaped by many factors, but none more powerful than the choices made by those who dare to imagine, and who possess the skill to turn vision into reality.”

Using the example of the national female football team, the President illustrated the values of perseverance and determination.

“Think of our great female footballers. At one point, they were two goals down. It seemed the game was lost. But through determination, persistence, and unity, they turned things around and brought pride to the entire nation. That is the spirit I ask of you. Let us move forward together, just like they did.

“Let your creativity continue to inspire. Let your enterprise open doors. Let your example show that this generation is not only ready for the future, but ready to lead it,” he said.

President Tinubu concluded with a message of hope and expectation for the younger generation.

“May your work be guided by wisdom. May your voices lift others. And may your generation be remembered not just for its potential, but for turning promise into achievement,” he said.

  • Why coalition cannot unseat Tinubu in 2027

Why coalition cannot unseat Tinubu in 2027

    • By Egajivwie Frank Odiri

AS the 2027 general elections inch closer, political realignments are intensifying, with opposition forces attempting to consolidate under a unified front to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s anticipated re-election bid. Central to this movement is a newly energized coalition of political heavyweights and estranged allies, now rallying under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has been adopted as the coalition’s official platform. Despite the growing momentum, declarations of intent, and calculated media optics, a realistic analysis of Nigeria’s current political terrain suggests that unseating Tinubu in 2027 remains highly improbable.

One of the pivotal figures driving the coalition’s resurgence is former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. His increasingly vocal opposition to President Tinubu, following his exit from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has transformed him into a symbolic figure for anti-establishment forces within and beyond the North. El-Rufai’s role in repositioning the ADC is widely viewed as a personal political rebirth following his exclusion from the federal cabinet. Once a key ally during the anti-PDP era, El-Rufai has now recast himself as a strategic adversary, aligning with similarly disenchanted figures across party lines. While some observers believe the two men—one a technocrat, the other a master tactician—could have collaborated for national development, it appears Tinubu is playing the long game, prioritizing loyalty and stability over risky alliances.

With El-Rufai and others working behind the scenes, the ADC coalition is reportedly weighing a shortlist of potential presidential candidates. Names such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and a yet-to-be-named northern consensus figure have surfaced. However, each of these options presents its own set of political liabilities. Obi and Amaechi, as southern candidates, face the hurdle of regional sentiment in a country still heavily influenced by geopolitical balance. Despite Obi’s energetic youth support and Amaechi’s residual appeal in parts of the South-South, both would struggle to gain serious traction in the North, a region that remains electorally decisive. Northern power brokers, even those disgruntled with Tinubu, may be reluctant to back another southerner so soon after Buhari’s tenure ended just four years ago.

Read Also: Tinubu urges youth to use new media for unity, patriotism

This dilemma plays directly into the hands of Tinubu’s northern allies, who would deploy a simple but effective message: why replace a southern president with another southerner when the South is only halfway through its expected eight-year rotation? This sentiment would resonate not just with northern conservatives but also with swing voters in the Middle Belt and parts of the North-West, where regional loyalty often outweighs partisan ideology.

Alternatively, a northern candidate such as Atiku Abubakar might energize parts of the northern electorate, particularly in the North-East and some sections of the North-West. But this would immediately alienate large portions of the South-West and South-South, who widely believe that power must remain in the South until 2031. The memory of Buhari’s eight-year northern presidency is still fresh, and many southern voters, across political affiliations, would likely resist any attempt to return the presidency to the North prematurely. Even the North-Central region, traditionally viewed as a swing bloc, would be a tough sell. Atiku’s inability to win a single state in the zone during the 2023 elections remains instructive.

Beyond candidate dynamics, the coalition faces the formidable barrier of incumbency. President Tinubu occupies the most powerful office in the land, with access to the levers of federal power, appointments, security coordination, and project implementation. As with his predecessors, the sitting president has enormous tools at his disposal to build alliances, reward loyalty, and neutralize opposition. Federal appointments and strategic development interventions are already being deployed across key geopolitical zones, signaling a clear intent to expand Tinubu’s base ahead of 2027.

The APC, despite internal friction, remains the most organized political machine in Nigeria. It has nationwide structures, entrenched grassroots networks, and institutional knowledge of electoral battlefields. By contrast, the opposition is still fractured. The ADC, PDP, Labour Party, and SDP are all pulling in different directions without a unified ideology, message, or clear roadmap. The idea that this loose arrangement can produce a single, widely accepted candidate with a cohesive campaign strategy and viable path to victory is, at this stage, far-fetched.

Moreover, Tinubu is not a political novice riding on incumbency alone. He is a seasoned strategist who spent years building alliances, cultivating loyalty, and managing the political ecosystem from the shadows before stepping into the presidency. Since assuming office, he has continued to consolidate power through calculated appointments, policy manoeuvres, and outreach to previously skeptical constituencies. Even regions that gave him low support in 2023 are beginning to see increased federal presence—a deliberate effort to recalibrate regional sentiment ahead of the next polls.

Finally, there is the question of national mood and the unwritten rule of regional power rotation. There exists a widespread consensus, particularly in the South and Middle Belt, that the presidency should remain in the South until 2031. This is not just a political argument but one rooted in the country’s fragile sense of fairness, equity, and national cohesion. Any effort by the opposition coalition to reverse this sentiment by fielding a northern candidate could provoke backlash and drive moderate southern voters back into Tinubu’s camp, even if reluctantly.

While the adoption of the ADC as a coalition platform may give the opposition a semblance of structure, it does little to address the fundamental strategic and electoral challenges that lie ahead. Without a clear ideological foundation, credible nationwide structures, and a candidate capable of uniting both the North and South, the coalition’s mission remains aspirational at best.

President Tinubu, for all the criticisms his administration may face, retains a firm grip on power, a strategic understanding of Nigeria’s political terrain, and the advantage of incumbency. For now, the path to Aso Rock in 2027 is still his to lose.

Tinubu has shown capacity in governance, says Ukachukwu

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, ‘APC’ in Anambra State, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, says President Bola Tinubu has shown capacity in governance.

The reason, according to him, things are beginning to fall into places, adding that the attacks by opposition will not take them anywhere.

Addressing reporter Wednesday in Awka, Ukachukwu said the kind of leadership Tinubu has shown at the national level would  be replicated in Anambra State, after the November 8 election by APC

The APC candidate said the opposition who are criticising the APC administration of Tinubu did not have the vision he has brought into governance. “He is using his policies to show the light for Nigeria”

He lamented the insecurity situation in Anambra State, where individuals are being kidnapped and killed on a daily basis.

The APC candidate said the hoodlums, allegedly, being assembled by the state government for the purposes of the governorship election would not succeed during polls because only conventional security outfits will be deployed for the exercise.

“Those Agunechemba, Ndi aka odo, operation udo ga achi will not come out during the election, I assure you that, the only security that will be out that day are the Police, Military, DSS etc and not vigilante. They will not have any place to operate that day.

“If APC wins the governorship election, Ndi Aka Odo that have been disfiguring young men in this state will be dismantled because they are evil,” APC candidate said.
