My govt won’t leave any region behind in development, says Tinubu

    …lauds Ahmadu Bello’s virtues

President Bola Tinubu has assured that his administration will ensure equitable development across all regions of the country, with no area left behind.

This assurance was made by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume in Kaduna state at a two-day interactive programme on government-citizen engagement organised by the Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation.

He said ministers’ interactions with stakeholders at the event will unveil empirical facts and figures that the North is not neglected.

Senator Akume who highlighted key achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda, spoke on several interventions of the present administration including economic reforms, education, health, security, Infrastructure and food security.

On economic reforms, the SGF said the Tinubu administration has implemented bold reforms to stabilise and grow the economy, including unifying the exchange rate and restructuring debt profiles.

While stressing that investments have been made in modernising security equipment and upskilling personnel, he listed major projects to include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Sokoto- Badagry super highway, ongoing rail projects (Kano-Maradi, Port Harcourt-Maiduguri), and housing initiatives.

Akume, who led a high-powered Federal Government delegation made of Ministers, Director-Generals of many agencies and top political aides from the North and across the country, highlighted the Renewed Hope Agenda priorities to include reforming the economy for sustained growth, strengthening national security, boosting agriculture for food security, unlocking energy and natural resources and enhancing infrastructure and transportation.

Others are focusing on education, health, and social investment, accelerating diversification through industrialisation and innovation as well as improving governance for effective service delivery.

“The removal of fuel subsidy, though painful, has been a necessary reform that saved trillions of Naira. The Palliative Measures Plan and interventions through state governments, MSME support, and public transportation upgrades are mitigating the impacts. The savings are now being redirected into critical infrastructure and human development while states are receiving increased allocations for development,” he said.

Reflecting on the theme of the event, ‘Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizen Engagement for National Development,’ the SGF said the Renewed Hope Agenda has been a pragmatic vision built on pillars of good governance, including transparency, accountability, participation, responsiveness, equity, rule of law, and inclusivity, going beyond just a campaign slogan.

He said, “The economic reform strategies are designed to create a robust, diversified, and resilient economy. By fostering an environment conducive to investment and innovation, the administration aims to stimulate growth across all sectors, reduce unemployment, and ensure equitable wealth distribution.

“Security is the bedrock of national development. The focus here is on enhancing the capabilities of our security forces, promoting peace and stability, and ensuring that every Nigerian feels safe and protected, no matter where they reside.

“Agriculture holds the key to our nation’s self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. By modernizing farming practices, increasing access to finance, and expanding market opportunities for farmers. This administration places Nigeria on a path to achieving food security and transforming our country into an agricultural powerhouse.

“Through reforms, the government is unlocking the potential of Nigeria’s vast natural resources and energy sector. Through sustainable management, increased investments, and the adoption of modern technologies, the goal remains to drive economic growth and ensure environmental sustainability.”

According to him, over 400,000 students in tertiary institutions have so far benefitted from the Student Loan Programme, while an estimated N53billion has been disbursed.

He also highlighted the importance of patience and collective effort in achieving the agenda’s goals.

He extolled the virtues of former Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello, describing him as a phenomenal being who promoted national cohesion and unity in Nigeria.

Senator Akume also saluted the courage, sincerity and patriotism of other leaders such as Chief Solomon Lar, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, Shehu Dan Musa, Abubakar Rimi, Prof Suleman Kumo, Issac Shaahu, Prof Jerry Gana and others.

  • Nabena to Kwankwaso: regional sentiments can’t deny Tinubu’s 8-yr presidency

Nabena to Kwankwaso: regional sentiments can’t deny Tinubu’s 8-yr presidency

Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Yekini Nabena, has dismissed claims by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso that the South is being favoured in the distribution of federal projects, describing them as attempts to stoke ethnic and regional sentiments ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Nabena said no ethnic, religious, or regional sentiment, such as those allegedly promoted by the 2023 NNPP presidential candidate, can derail the emergence of a Southerner completing eight years in the presidency.

Reacting to Kwankwaso’s recent comments accusing the federal government of favouring the South over the North in terms of infrastructure and development, Nabena described the former Kano governor’s remarks as a veiled attempt to incite Northern voters against the current administration.

He said, “Such incitement as a political business or negotiation tactic, like some politicians used in 2019 and 2023, can no longer work. The people now know the real intention. Kano voters now understand who is using them for political gains, and even political gladiators now recognise the tricks of political merchants.”

The Bayelsa-born APC chieftain further challenged Kwankwaso to travel through the South-South by road and compare the conditions of road networks in the oil-rich region to those in the North.

Nabena maintained that completing eight years of Southern leadership in Aso Rock is non-negotiable and reflects the principle of fairness and balance in Nigeria’s power structure.

He said, “Is the north inferior or superior to the South after eight years of the north in the helm of affairs of Nigeria? Why is Senator Kwankwaso still complaining of under-development in the North when the region just completed it’s 8 years? One will also wonder which of the northern money or resources was used to develop the South? Is it the Gold, Rice or Groundnut pyramid?

“As politicians, we all understand what the former Governor is up to. He is working hard to incite the North against the Southern presidency but that has failed woefully because the South must complete the 8 years in the presidency for fairness and equity.”

The former APC spokesman, however, declared that Kwankwaso cannot and do not have capacity to intimidate the South ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“You cannot intimidate the South or anybody with Kano votes any longer because as a politician we all know the game and what you are up to. The era of playing religious or ethnic cards is far becoming unfashionable,” Nabena warned.

Presidency defends Tinubu’s Super Falcons gesture

The Presidency has defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent cash reward to the Super Falcons, following mixed public reactions on social and mainstream media platforms.

In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @aonanuga1956, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, explained that the President did what a grateful nation should do.

He reiterated that President Tinubu’s gesture was a celebration of “excellence, creativity, hard work, soccer artistry and the undying Nigerian spirit.”

“When you remember that Multichoice, the organizer of the BBNaija reality show is offering the winner ₦150 million grand prize, you wonder why some Nigerians are unappreciative of President Tinubu’s rewards to the Super Falcons,” Onanuga wrote.

President on Monday announced monetary rewards, approving the Naira equivalent of $100,000 (approximately N153 million) for each player and $50,000 (N75.6 million), for each member of the coaching crew, totalling N4,503,600,000.

He also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on each member of the victorious squad, as well as a three-bedroom apartment to go with.

Onanuga’s reaction comes after President Tinubu, on Monday, announced a special cash reward and national recognition for members of the Nigerian women’s national football team following their historic victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Falcons claimed their 10th continental title after a dramatic win in Rabat, Morocco.

While the President’s move received praise from many Nigerians and sports enthusiasts, particularly for promoting women’s sports, some online commentators questioned the timing, monetary value, and broader implications in the face of economic challenges.

Onanuga, however, emphasized that the President’s action was symbolic of his administration’s commitment to rewarding merit and motivating future excellence.

Contractors seek govt intervention on Kaduna contracts

Over 400 contractors of the Formal Act Legacy Ltd, Consultant to the 23 Local Government Area (LGAs) of Kaduna State, have cried out to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to help them recover over N30billion from the consultant.

The call for the debt recovery was contained in the open letter the group wrote to Tinubu, which The Nation obtained from Abuja yesterday.

The Interim Chairman of the group, Engr. Adamu Isah and Interim Secretary, Idris Isyaku, signed the letter.

Meanwhile, the CEO of Formal Act Legacy Ltd, Consultant, Hon. Bashir Ibrahim, whom The Nation called on phone for his side of the story, described it as a false allegation.

  • Ekiti ex-governors, Aiyedatiwa endorse Tinubu, Oyebanji

Ekiti ex-governors, Aiyedatiwa endorse Tinubu, Oyebanji

    • Leaders across parties come together for President, governor
    • Fayemi absent at  solidarity rally

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has secured the resounding backing of Ekiti State for re-election in 2027.

In a parallel show of solidarity, Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s ambition for a second term in office also received a ringing endorsement, affirming a united front.

They received the seals of approval during a massive rally in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, yesterday.

It was attended by all previous governors of the state  – Adeniyi Adebayo, Ayodele Fayose and Segun Oni – except the immediate past helmsman, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

All the former governors okayed President Tinubu and Oyebanji to continue in their positions.

The Ekiti State Governorship election is due to hold on July 20, 2026.

The huge turnout and the bipartisan attendance made the rally unique.

Fayose is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – he even wore a fez cap with PDP inscription.

Oni, a former PDP member, last contested for governor on the ticket of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Neighbouring Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly Adeoye Aribasoye, House members, and former deputy governor and one-time Senate Minority Leader, Senator Biodun Olujimi, graced the rally.

As early as 7 am, party faithful, political leaders, labour union leaders, market women, artisans, traditional rulers and other stakeholders started converging on the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion venue.

A motion for President Tinubu’s endorsement was moved by Senator Bamidele and seconded by the federal lawmaker from Ekiti East, Emure and Gboyin Constituency, Femi Bamisile.

The endorsement of Oyebanji and his deputy, Mrs Monisade Afuye, was moved by Speaker Aribasoye and seconded by his deputy, Bolaji Egbeyemi.

Both motions were unanimously adopted by the crowd through thunderous voice votes.

Thereafter, a letter communicating the president’s endorsement was presented to Dr. Basiru for onward delivery.

The APC enlarged its coast with the defection of Senator Olujimi and Obafemi Adewale (SAN), and a state lawmaker from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Babatunde Omotola.

Oyebanji, a humble governor, says Fayose

Fayose declared his unflinching support for the re-election of the President and the governor.

He described the event as a watershed in the political history of Ekiti, noting the significance of collective endorsement by former governors, state leaders, and National Assembly members from Ekiti.

Fayose said their presence was a “remarkable show of unity and a sign of political maturity”,  describing the cohesion among ex-Ekiti governors as a model for all states.

Although he reiterated that he would not join the APC, Fayose explained that his support for President Tinubu and Oyebanji was based on their performance as well as their character.

He said: “I am not a member of his party and I will never be, but I stand here to say I have seen the good work.

“I must commend Governor Oyebanji’s humility and his rare leadership style. He deserves another term.

“I hereby endorse, without reservation, President Bola Tinubu for a second term. I also endorse our governor, Oyebanji and his deputy for a second term.”

Oni: He is a rallying point

Oni and Adebayo said Oyebanji had united the political leaders in the state across party lines and fostered development.

He said President Tinubu and the governor deserve second terms given their developmental strides in infrastructure, agriculture, education, economy, healthcare, youth development and other pivotal areas of development.

He added: “I’m here to say the Nigeria of our dream is coming gradually. And since Nigeria of our dream is coming, Ekiti of our dream is near.

“One thing Governor Oyebanji has done better than us is his ability to bring people together.

“We now have a great opportunity to take Ekiti forward together and make it greater.

“This Ekiti must not just be a mention in Nigeria’s political equation. It must be a dominant feature in the political matrix.

“By working together, we can make Ekiti great and a state of our dreams.”

Coalition can’t stop Tinubu, says APC Secretary

Basiru said President Tinubu and Oyebanji deserve another term because of their excellent scorecards.

He said no political force or coalition can stop President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, adding that the majority of Nigerians are ready to pay him back for his performance.

He said the African Democratic Party (ADC) posed no threat to Tinubu’s second term, describing it as a “conglomeration of expired and lightweight politicians”.

Basiru urged Nigerians to beware of the ADC leaders, saying that they have nothing to offer and are planning to disrupt the development trajectory being witnessed under the administration.

He stressed: “We heard some betrayers have been making fishy moves in Yorubaland, telling you to move to ADC. APC is supposed to be the only political party for Yorubaland.

“We are delighted to receive this letter of endorsement. We have confidence that when it comes to the election, all and sundry in Ekiti will cast their votes for the President.

“We thank the governor for the good work he’s doing in the state. This endorsement is borne out of his good work. That’s why everything is happening.”

    Aiyedatiwa: Ekiti governor is capable

Aiyedatiwa declared that Oyebanji has demonstrated capacity and commitment towards the development of the state in the last three years.

He said no fewer than 22 APC governors have declared their support for the governor’s re-election to consolidate his achievements.

Aiyedatiwa said: “I am here today in solidarity with my brother and friend, Governor Oyebanji, and to declare my total support for his second term because he has touched lives across all sectors of the economy.

“Let me inform our people in Ekiti State that all of us in the Progressive Governors Forum are in support of the governor to continue in office till 2030.”

Ekiti committed to Tinubu, BAO, says Aluko

The chairman of the Statewide Endorsement Committee, Chief Abiodun Aluko, said the event was a confirmation of the collective will of Ekiti people, after months of similar endorsements at senatorial, local and ward levels.

He said the endorsement rally was meant to appreciate the good works of both President Tinubu and Oyebanji.

Aluko, a former deputy governor, said that with the public endorsement, the second terms of Tinubu and Oyebanji are not negotiable.

    Oyebanji: get your PVC ready

An elated Oyebanji thanked the people for their vote of confidence in him and the President, promising not to disappoint them.

He hailed President Tinubu for his transformative policies, which have reshaped the economy, saying that his re-election would further bring development to the country.

He said his administration in the last three years had fulfilled its campaign promises in line with the six-pillar agenda, which has positively impacted the lives of the people.

The governor said he had made an impact in the state due to the bold and audacious reforms of President Tinubu, who had channelled more resources to the states.

Oyebanji asked the people who are yet to register  for their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to do so “for us to demonstrate our love for him through our votes in 2027.”

At the event were the chairman of the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), Prince Dayo Adeyeye, the Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority, Oyetunde Ojo; all National Assembly members from the state, Oseni Remi, Mr. Ifedayo Arowosoge, and ex-House of Representatives members Ibrahim Olarewaju and Ibrahim Owolabi.

It was not clear last night why Fayemi was not at the rally. He was not known to be out of the country.

An official in his Abuja office said he was not in a position to give any reason.

Fayemi’s number could also not be reached despite many attempts.

  • More cash for states under new VAT distribution

More cash for states under new VAT distribution

States whose allocation have tripled as a result of the withdrawal of petrol subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will earn more revenue from the Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution in the new tax regime.

The tax law signed last month by the President is due to take effect from January.

In the VAT distribution  in the VAT distribution plan state governments will receive 55 per cent of, up from the current  50 per cent.

In contrast, the Federal Government’s share will drop from 15 per cent to 10 per cent. That of local governments will remain at 35 per cent.

The adjustments are a part of the new tax administration policy signed by President Bola Tinubu early last month. They also mark a shift in Nigeria’s fiscal framework.

The revised VAT sharing formula reflects growing calls for more fiscal decentralisation and is expected to boost the financial capacity of states.

A senior official at the Federal Ministry of Finance described the development as “a political and economic compromise” intended to aligning fiscal responsibility with revenue allocation.

Beyond the new sharing ratio, the Act changes how VAT revenues are distributed among states and local governments. Of the VAT portion allocated to them, 50 percent will be shared equally among all states and LGAs, 20 percent will be distributed based on population size and 30 percent based on actual consumption of goods and services within each area.

This new formula replaces the old method that allocated part of the revenue based on where companies filed their VAT returns, often to the advantage of states hosting corporate headquarters.

The law also places new obligations on financial institutions. Banks, insurance firms, stockbroking companies and other financial operators are now required to file quarterly reports to the tax authorities.

The reports must list all new customers and identify individual accounts with monthly transactions of N25 million or more, and corporate accounts with cumulative monthly transactions of at least N100 million.

This measure is expected to enhance tax surveillance and improve compliance by tracking high-value financial activities.

To strengthen the tax refund system, the Act mandates that refunds must be deducted before VAT revenue is shared.

The Accountant-General of the Federation or a state must set aside the refund amount into dedicated Tax Refund Accounts based on claims submitted by tax authorities.

These accounts are to be reconciled monthly, and any leftover funds can be used to meet future refund claims, ensuring a more predictable and transparent refund process.

In a move to simplify Nigeria’s trade procedures, the Nigeria Revenue Service, which will replace the Federal Inland Revenue Service from January  is empowered to launch a National Single Window Portal. The platform will serve as a one-stop online hub for importers, exporters and those engaged in transit operations.

Users can electronically submit trade documents, make payments for duties and levies, and provide transaction data through the same portal.

The platform is intended to streamline operations, reduce delays and improve government revenue from cross-border trade. The service will also regulate administrative charges related to the portal.

The law also expands the powers of tax officers, granting them the right to inspect records—whether physical or electronic—on any premises, provided it is done within reasonable hours.

If necessary, tax officers can seize digital storage devices to prevent tampering or loss of evidence. Where the authority has the capability, it may make exact digital copies of the data for investigations or legal action.

Private homes are protected under the law. Tax officers can only enter with the consent of the occupier or a warrant issued by a judge. Such warrants must be valid for up to three months and can be renewed upon application. They must also name the authorised officer and specify the scope of the search.

Each of Nigeria’s 36 states is now required to establish a State Internal Revenue Service (SIRS) with full autonomy over its administrative, financial, and operational affairs.

  • How Tinubu has transformed health care delivery across North in two years

How Tinubu has transformed health care delivery across North in two years

    • By Salamatu Isa

In a modest Primary Health Centre tucked deep in Yobe State, Fatimah cradled her newborn with a mix of relief and disbelief. The delivery had been safe, the midwife skilled, and the treatment free. For a region long plagued by maternal mortality and fragile health infrastructure, such a story once felt rare. But today, across Northern Nigeria, it is becoming part of a larger, deliberate shift backed by bold political will and quiet structural reforms.

Since taking office, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made it clear that healthcare reform in Nigeria would not be rhetorical. It would be deliberate, driven by investment, community trust, and long-overdue system realignment. Hence, what was once a sector defined by systemic rot is now showing signs of rebirth, with bold reforms, unprecedented investments, particularly in the North, where the fault lines of inequality often run deepest. Of a truth, the results are beginning to tell their own stories.

After appointing Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate as the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare in August 2023, the President immediately began to establish a national consensus on the way forward. In 2023, the President summoned governors, international partners, and federal institutions to sign the Health Sector Renewal Compact. The outcome was not just another document, it was a shared commitment to reverse decades of underperformance. It birthed the Health Sector Renewal Investment Blueprint, which prioritized stronger governance, equitable access to services, local pharmaceutical production, and national health security.

On the ground, the Primary Healthcare revitalization agenda became the heartbeat of this transformation. Over 1,100 health centres were already upgraded within the past two years, with over 500 of those in Northern Nigeria alone. These facilities are not just buildings; they are gateways to antenatal care, skilled deliveries, immunization, and basic emergency services.

In the first quarter of 2025 alone, tens of thousands in the region accessed care through these centres, many for the first time in their lives. To tackle the North’s alarmingly high maternal death rates, the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII) was launched.

To prove that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not just a blueprint, but a living and breathing paradigm of transformation, the Federal Government designated 154 health facilities, many of them in the North, to provide free treatment for women with obstetric complications. These facilities will cater to women experiencing health challenges during pregnancy, labour, delivery, or the postpartum period, which could affect the well-being of both mother and baby.

While the programme has commenced in some of the hospitals, MOUs have been signed in others ahead of kick-off. Among the Northern hospitals which are beneficiaries of this laudable initiative are: Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital; Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano; Mohammed Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital; Sir Yahaya Memorial Specialist Hospital, Birnin Kebbi; Federal Teaching Hospital Birmin Kebbi; Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital, Sokoto; Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital Sokoto; Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi; Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare, Bauchi; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri; University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalda; Federal Medical Centre, Birnin Kudu; Federal Medical Centre, Bida; Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Damaturu; Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi; Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Shika, Zaria.

Others are Bauchi Specialist Hospital; General Hospital, Toro; General Hospital, Itas; General Hospital, Misau. In Gombe, the hospital are General Hospital, Dukku; Zainab Bulkachuwa Women & Children Hospital; General Hospital, Kaltungo; General Hospital, Bajoga, and Gombe State Specialist Hospital.

In Niger, General Hospital, Mokwa; General Hospital, Kuta; General Hospital, Tungan Magaji; Jummai Babangida Aliu Maternal & Neonatal Hospital; General Hospital, Suleja, are also on board this project.

Out of the 172 priority local government areas selected for urgent intervention, 74 percent are in the North. Here, where tradition often clashes with access, millions of pregnant women have now received vital micronutrient supplements. Over 13 million antenatal visits have taken place since 2023, and more than 4000 emergency caesarean deliveries have been conducted at no cost.

Vaccines are reaching deeper too. Over 14 million adolescent girls across Nigeria, including the majority of those taking place in remote corners of the North where millions of girls have received the HPV vaccine.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has equally subsidized the high cost of kidney care, specifically dialysis treatments, from over N50,000 down to N12,000 across the nation, but also in northern medical institutions, including: Federal Medical Centre Jabi, Abuja; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Borno; and Federal Medical Centre Azare, Bauchi.

Furthermore, with the VVF crisis ravaging female child health and development across Northern Nigeria, President Tinubu’s administration has introduced and implemented Free Fistula surgeries for thousands of young Nigerian women in Northern Nigeria at these institutions: NOFIC, Ningi, Bauchi; NOFIC, Babbar Rugar, Katsina; Women & Children Hospital, Damaturu, Yobe; Laure Fistula Center, Kano; Maryam Abacha Hospital, Sokoto; VVF Center Gesse, Birnin Kebbi; Hajiya Gambo Sawaba Hospital, Kaduna; VVF Center, State Specialist Hospital, Gombe; VVF Center, Gwarinpa Hospital,

Abuja; Bingham UTH, Jos, Plateau; Dr. Aisha Buhari Mother & Child Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara; Farida VVF Hospital, Gusau, Zamfara; Federal Medical Centre, Yola, Adamawa; and Jahun VVF Center, Dutse, Jigawa.

In Kebbi and some other states, a pilot malaria vaccination programme has already protected over 100,000 children. And in the Lake Chad Basin, a synchronized polio campaign has vaccinated over 53 million eligible children, helping drive Nigeria’s annual case count down to just 16, its lowest in years.

Yet, it is not just children and mothers who are feeling the impact. Over 1.9 million Nigerians living with HIV have continued receiving treatment despite donor funding challenges. Tuberculosis detection and treatment now reach hundreds of thousands, with a 94% success rate. More than 20 million insecticide-treated nets have been distributed, including to displaced and rural populations.

Meanwhile, medical innovation is being married to local realities. In 6 northern states, geo-spatial tools are being used to identify and track over 7 million children under five and more than 1 million pregnant women enabling real-time planning and immunization scheduling. It is a quiet revolution in public health administration, and it began where many assumed it could not.

At the tertiary level, the transformation is visible. Across the North’s teaching hospitals and diagnostic centres, from Kaduna and Sokoto to Jos and Ilorin, over four and a half million patients have accessed outpatient services under the administration’s investment wave. Interventional cardiology, radiology, and pathology services, once concentrated in major cities, are spreading into new medical frontiers.

Human capital remains central to this effort. President Tinubu’s administration has trained more than 61,000 frontline health workers and nearly four thousand health managers. In a bold move to seed the next generation of health leaders, a new fellowship programme was launched in March 2025. Youths were selected from all 774 local government areas, including over 400 young public health leaders from across all Northern Local Government Areas. They are currently being trained to lead innovation, research, and implement best practices in primary health care delivery.

The President’s commitment has drawn global recognition. Named the African Union Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery, President Tinubu has overseen the expansion of midwifery training and the scaling of enrolment in nursing institutions from 28,000 to 150,000. The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has also championed maternal care, distributing sixty thousand midwifery kits across the 6 geopolitical zones.

At the policy level, the administration is pushing for self-reliance in the health value chain. In October 2023, the President launched the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC). This strategy was designed to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported medical supplies. By June 2024, he had signed an executive order waiving import duties and VAT on essential medical equipment and raw materials. Less than a year later, Medipool, a group purchasing mechanism to aggregate demand and drive down costs, was approved.

Through these efforts, 70 bankable projects, worth $5 billion dollars, are being pursued in partnership with institutions like the European Investment Bank and Afrexim Bank. From liquid oxygen plants to diagnostic kit assembly, the manufacturing landscape is shifting. International firms like Siemens, Abbott, and Wondfo are now investing in localized production, supported by policy and infrastructure reforms.

And the administration has not forgotten the people farthest from care. Through 48 Renewed Hope medical missions, 158,000 citizens in hard-to-reach or underserved areas, including remote northern communities, have received direct medical services.

This is not a health miracle. It is a method. A strategy built on partnership, data, transparency, and political clarity. The President’s approach challenges a long-standing narrative that the North is doomed to lag behind. What we now see is that with the right leadership, political courage, and institutional backing, progress is not only possible, it is unfolding.

For too long, healthcare in Northern Nigeria has been discussed through the lens of despair. But the facts are changing, and so must the story. In maternity wards, at vaccine tables, in solar-powered primary care centres, and along dusty rural roads where health workers now reach, a quiet, patient revolution is underway.

Tinubu, 2027 and Buhari’s sad death

    By Tunde Rahman

As if blessed with clairvoyance or possibly having a premonition of President Muhammadu Buhari’s imminent death, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, seemed to have stirred up the debate around the former President’s political strength and likely impact on the 2027 election, even in death.

On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, just four days before Buhari’s death, the former SGF claimed President Bola Tinubu did not make Buhari president in 2015. He was speaking at the public presentation of a book, titled “According to the President: Lessons From A Presidential Spokesman’s Experience,” written by Mallam Garba Shehu, Spokesman to the late Buhari.

In his keynote address at the book launch, Mustapha argued that the former President’s fame was never in doubt and that he had already had over 12 million votes in his kitty before the 2015 election. “The merger of the legacy parties merely contributed three million votes to his victory at the 2015 presidential election,” he noted.

To speak of the true motive behind such a claim or whether the 12 million votes endured would only be conjectural. Yet, it begs the question: If Buhari had always had a guaranteed bloc of 12 million votes, and the alliance partners contributed only three million votes, many would wonder why those massive votes didn’t make him President in 2003, 2007, and 2011 until President Tinubu and others teamed up with him to form an alliance that produced the all–conquering All Progressives Congress.

This might have been akin to dissipating energy on a matter that would have been merely academic if the late President himself had not often acknowledged President Tinubu’s help in his ascent to the exalted office. Last March 29, in a telephone call to the President on his 73rd birthday, Buhari rejoiced with him and thanked Tinubu effusively for his contributions to his emergence as President in 2015.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, the former SGF’s assertion provides a valuable insight into assessing the potential influence the former President’s death may have on the 2027 election.

Former President Buhari lived a remarkable life by every measure, and his departure in a blaze of glory was no less extraordinary. President Tinubu accorded him a historic state burial. In the wake of Buhari’s demise on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital, President Tinubu declared seven days of national mourning and ordered the nation’s flag flown at half-staff. The President was on hand to receive Buhari’s body as it arrived in Katsina from the United Kingdom. Just as significant, the Federal Government declared a public holiday on Tuesday, July 15, when Buhari’s remains were buried in his Daura hometown in Katsina State.

President Tinubu led dignitaries, including President Umaru Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Prime Minister of the Niger Republic, Ali Lamine Zeine, Vice President Kashim Shettima, former President of the Niger Republic, Issoufou Mahamadou, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, many Nigerian governors and business leaders, to escort the late President’s remains on the long drive to Daura. They witnessed as the former President was laid to rest.

No honour would be too much for that late patriot, civil war hero, distinguished army general, and former President, who stood for the Talakawas. Many Nigerians respected Buhari for living a Spartan life and standing for truth and justice, values that earned him the sobriquet “Mai Gaskiya.”

How will President Buhari’s death impact the politics of the 2027 election and President Tinubu’s re-election, with the opposition swirling around him, baying for blood? It is yet unclear. Indeed, in the run-up to the 2027 election, some analysts liken former President Buhari’s death to a double-edged sword that can cut both ways. They contend that the impact of his demise on the 2027 election can swing for and against President Tinubu.

Those who think his passing may chip away at the President’s re-election plans contend that Buhari remained a true and consistent ally of Tinubu till death and that the partnership between the two, built on mutual trust and respect, had remained strong until Buhari’s passing. Buhari never spoke against Tinubu or his administration while alive. The former President reportedly commended Tinubu for having the courage to make bold decisions about the economy, which he had found difficult to implement.

There was nothing to suggest that Buhari would not have backed Tinubu in 2027 if he were still alive, given that he had consistently emphasised his indebtedness to the APC, which provided the platform that enabled him to become President, and Tinubu, who assisted him on his presidential journey.

Perhaps realising this Tinubu-Buhari connection, opposition political figures, particularly members of the so-called coalition-African Democratic Congress, including politicians from the North who still regard themselves as Buharists or Buhari Boys, desperately sought to outdo each other in a bid to earn cheap political capital, using Buhari’s death as fodder.

Barely a day after Buhari’s death was announced, former governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, arrived in Katsina to position himself as a foremost Buhari ally and the inheritor of his political dynasty. Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi also arrived in Daura, fully draped in a turban, as a traditional chief of the town, to gain an advantage for the coalition.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar organised a grand entry into Daura on Tuesday, the day of Buhari’s burial. A motley crowd of his supporters cheered him at the airport, but it was all of no moment, rather gaudy for the sombre event. For effect, some of the opposition figures headed for Buhari’s graveside last Wednesday to pray for the repose of his soul.

Buhari’s death appears to have opened up the leadership space in the North. And no political leader in the North today commands that extraordinary following as Buhari. With his passing, a rat race has ensued for leadership supremacy. This situation somewhat plays to President Tinubu’s advantage, despite the suggestion that it may hurt him politically. Indeed, this is by no means glossing over the huge void and the pains that the statesman’s death has left.

President Tinubu has taken the proper steps to give the former president a befitting burial. In other to further immortalize his name, he named the University of Maiduguri in Borno State after Buhari. The President did all that for a leader who served the country resolutely and a political ally who stood by the spirit and letter of their convictions.

In my view, all the President needs to do now and do strongly is seize the momentum, galvanise the rump of the Congress for Progressives Change elements that believe in him and those of other alliance partners in the North and South of the country, and assume full leadership of the Tinubu-Buhari alliance that produced the APC and produced Buhari and himself as presidents.

“Your victory represents more than a sporting accomplishment. It is a triumph of courage, determination, discipline, and consistency.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want to have high blood pressure. But people came in and turned my TV on that channel. When it was 2-0, I got very offended and restless.

“But I was still watching with the spirit of resilience, determination, and courage. And after that penalty, my strength was lifted, and I believe that of the nation was lifted too.

“But you almost made me angrier because your mother (the First Lady) was in the kitchen, nearly abandoning my dinner.

”She doesn’t watch the game except when the girls are playing. And at the end of the final whistle, it was joy all over the country,” he said.

The President assured the team of his administration’s continued support and commitment to sports development, pledging that the government would invest further in women’s football and youth talent development across the country.

“The zeal you displayed on the pitch was nothing short of inspirational. You never wavered and reminded the world why Nigeria remains a powerhouse in African women’s football”, she said.

The First Lady prayed for the team’s continued success and shared an earlier conversation with President Tinubu about the team’s bright future as world champions.

“I told Mr. President this morning that you are going on to win the World Cup, and he thought I was too ambitious. But Ajibade, the team captain, just seconded that, and that is possible”, she said.

Super Falcons Captain Rasheedat Ajibade said the victory was for the team and for every Nigerian girl who dreams of achieving greatness.

“Today, I stand before you not just as the captain of the Super Falcons, but as a proud daughter of Nigeria, carrying the dreams, resilience, and spirit of our great nation”, she said.

“On behalf of my teammates, coaches, and technical staff, I express our heartfelt gratitude for this warm reception and the unwavering belief you have shown in us”, she said.

It is a celebration of every young girl in our villages, towns, and cities who dares to dream… This 10th title is for you, Mr. President, for Nigerians, for Super Falcons, and for every young child who believes and dreams to be on this stage someday”.

Ajibade called for continued support from the government and stakeholders to elevate Nigeria’s global standing in women’s football.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the team’s victory as a symbol of national unity, inspiration, and the triumph of belief, courage, and excellence.

Dikko credited President Tinubu’s administration with investing in sports development and women’s empowerment.

“The Super Falcons’ triumph is a fruit of your unwavering support for sports and women. You have always believed that sports can unite us, heal us, and uplift our spirits as one of the major drivers of the economy. And today, we have seen it happen”, he stated.

He commended the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her “constant support for our women in sports”.

“This win goes beyond sports. It is a powerful symbol of our national unity and cohesion. In those 90 minutes, Nigerians everywhere from the north, south, east and west held their breath, prayed together, cheered the team, and finally celebrated together.

“’That is the power of sports, and indeed the power of our women in sports”, he said.
