“It is not titles that honour men but men that honour titles.” -Niccolo Machiavelli

June 12, 2025 will be a day to remember for a long time to come. Not for the niceties of officialdom but for the fact that it was on that day that those who sow courage yesterday were accorded honour today by a government whose henchman is a leading light of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that sprouted in the wake of June 23, 1993 Presidential election annulment by the military administration of evil dictator, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida. That day’s honour is the reward of the courage these patriots and thousands of others not yet honoured displayed in pursuit of electoral justice for the country.

Why is June 12 being celebrated? It is simply because on that date in 1993, Bashorun MKO Abiola was voted for but denied the victory of his globally acclaimed freest and fairest election ever in the history of this country. Sadly so, he was criminally taken out by the state in circumstances that are still beyond human comprehension.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, conferred this deserved honour on some deserving Nigerians during his Democracy Day address before the joint session of the National Assembly.

Last Thursday was a day that the toil of some living and dead fighters of today’s democratic fruits, enjoyed by Nigerians, were accorded due official recognition. Quite unlike before when democratically minded Nigerians, including the current president, begged, clamoured and prostrated before past powers-that-be so that freedom fighters of the June 12 hue can be duly recognized by the federation.

The worst previous leader in this regard is former President Olusegun Obasanjo who still loathes the name MKO Abiola; most certainly out of envy for the martyr of democracy’s larger-than-life image, wealth, and burgeoning political profile during his lifetime and till date.

The honorees of that day, though not exhaustive, fought on several fronts. Some fought with their pens of which yours sincerely was among. Yours sincerely joined other patriots on the streets of Abeokuta, Ogun state capital, to protest the devilish annulment at the time. However, other patriots fought against the annulment with their voice on radio and television stations. Others including students and the labour movement fought through networking, activism, pecuniary support and organizational skills amongst others. The collective efforts of these known and unknown patriots have brought about what we call democracy today.

As Tinubu reeled out names of beneficiaries, it is difficult to disagree with him on his choice of recipients even though it is clear that some names have been inadvertently omitted. The three Nigerians that hijacked an airplane just to draw global attention to the June 12 annulment in the prime of their youth were conspicuously missing on the Tinubu Democracy Day list. They went to jail in Niger Republic for over two decades and should now be honoured and rehabilitated for displaying rare selfless courage in times of national distress. General Isola Williams, Colonel Lawan Gwadabe, Colonel Abubakar Umar Dangiwa also were not on the list. Despite being uniformed personnel at the time, they risked their lives and service by speaking truth to power. Bishop Bolanle Gbonigi and others should equally be fished out for recognition.

But like Tinubu stated in his address, he’ll still add other deserving names in tandem with the National Council of State. This means that the exercise is a continuum. This is the first time in a long time that national honours awards are not seen by reasonable people as a bazaar.

The applause that greeted the presidential announcement of some names, particularly that of Professor Wole Soyinka, was tumultuous. It shows titles don’t make man. It is man that confers honour on titles. Names like Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Alani Akinrinade, Ken Saro-Wiwa, and Bagauda Kaltho elicited excitement across the National Assembly and the country.

The presidential honorees cannot be faulted. The heroine of June 12 struggles, Kudirat Abiola posthumously got the national honour of CFR, Shehu Musa Yar’Adua (GCFR), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu (CON), Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (CON), Alhaji Balarabe Musa (CFR), Pa. Alfred Rewani (CFR), Bagauda Kaltho (OON), Chima Ubani (OON), Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti (CON), Alao Aka Bashorun (CON), Chief Frank Kokori (CON), Emma Ezeazu (OON), Bamidele Aturu (OON), Fredrick Fasehun (CON), Professor Festus Iyayi (CON), Dr John Yima Sen (OON), Alhaja Sawaba Gambo (CON), Dr. Edwin Madunagu (CON), Dr. Alex Ibru (CON), Chief Bola Ige (CFR), Pa. Also conferred with the national honour are Professor Wole Soyinka (GCON), Professor Olatunji Dare, described as ‘journalist and journalism teacher’ by the president equally got CON:

Kunle Ajibade (OON); Nosa Igiebor (OON), Dapo Olorunyomi (OON), Bayo Onanuga (CON), Ayo Obe (OON), Dare Babarinsa (CON), Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah (CON), Senator Shehu Sani (CON), Governor Uba Sani (CON), Barrister Femi Falana, SAN (CON), Professor Shafideen Amuwo (CON), Barrister Luke Aghanenu (OON).

Abu Ibrahim (CFR), and Sen. Ame Ebute (CFR). Uncle Sam Amuka Pemu, the journalism luminary also got CON honour.

Environmental degradation activists/Ogoni nine, apart from state pardon also got national honours. Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa (CON) led Saturday Dobee (OON), Nordu Eawo (OON), Daniel Gbooko (OON), Paul Levera (OON), Felix Nuate (OON), Baribor Bera (OON), Barinem Kiobel (OON), and John Kpuine (OON) in this regard.

Listening to Tinubu reel out the names of these rebellious fighters of worthy cause reaffirms my personal conviction that the president is still the commander of his craft. For once since the advent of this democratic epoch, national award is making sense to sensible people in this country. This time around, national awards conferment is not publicly perceived as a mockery of our collective national values. These men, in line with Niccolo Machiavelli’s assertion, will surely give honour to their various national awards. Kudos to Tinubu for achieving this feat.

The complete or near silence of previous federal administrations on this issue of June 12 actually denied justice to living and dead freedom fighters because such silence empowered evil against good deeds of patriots who fought the military to a stand still.

Tinubu with this token recognition bestowed upon the deserving, dead and alive, cured the mischievous crime against reason of the past with regards to June 12. Thank you President Tinubu for giving us a day when it can be stated that honourees truly confer honour on National Awards.

No doubts that Nigerians remain united in commending him on this, just like yours sincerely hopes that one day, Nigerians will have genuine reason to be truly united in celebrating Tinubu’s efforts to put Nigeria on the right track however herculean it might seem today. That day, Nigerians would have gotten answers to the  renewed hope promised them, not excuses.

Those that Tinubu recognized at one point or the other in the history of this country on Thursday give efficacy to Leo Tolstoy’s assertion that “Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.”

These people gave Nigeria’s reformation priority at the risk of their lives and that of their family members.

And on June 12, 2025, past toil of these patriots paid off. Certainly, the toil of those that were not yet rewarded will one day be recognized by our omoluabi president. It is a matter of time and patience.

N/Delta ex-agitators declare unwavering support for Tinubu, Tompolo, Otuaro

The Phase 1 ex-agitators and beneficiaries of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) have expressed their unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo and the PAP Administrator, Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro.

The ex-agitators, who gathered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital to assess the performance of President Tinubu as part of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, scored the current administration at the centre high on peace, inclusiveness and regional development.

One of the stakeholders, Dennis Philip applauded President Tinubu’s visionary leadership and dedication to the Niger Delta, particularly his appointment of Dr. Otuaro, a move he said was widely seen as a commitment to grassroots leadership and sustainable peace.

In his assessment, a youth leader, Tarry Fayeofori, said: “We’ve never had it this good. The President’s impact is felt across our communities, and his trust in credible leaders like Dr. Otuaro shows he values integrity and local insight.”

The stakeholders further hailed Tompolo as the defender of national assets, saying his strategic role in securing national oil assets through Tantita Security Services, had contributed immensely in community development.

A community elder, Clarkson Ofubaraibim said: “Tompolo has evolved into a pillar of peace and a vital link between government and the people.”

In his remarks, Prince Dennis, said Otuaro through the support of President Tinubu had reformed the PAP and demonstrated a lot of commitment to capital development and transparent leadership.

The leaders demanded more federal investments in infrastructure, education, environmental clean-up, and entrepreneurship as well as stronger cooperation between the PAP, security forces, and local communities.

In their June 12 message, they declared their loyalty to President Tinubu, Tompolo, and Dr. Otuaro and pledged continued support for peace and progress in the Niger Delta.

“We stand firm in unity and dedication to a stronger region and a greater Nigeria,” They said.

  • Tinubu, Wike and APC

    Tinubu, Wike and APC

President Bola Tinubu can’t seem to resist taking a dig at the floundering Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In his inaugural State of the Union address before a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12, the president suggested that the opposition should put their house in order instead of crying wolf over one-party state. “It is indeed a pleasure to witness you in such disarray,” he quipped. But a more telling quip came when he commissioned a road project undertaken by FCT minister Nyesom Wike. He said: “We have somebody in Nyesom Wike. He’s not a member of my party, not yet, but the day he changes his mind and registers with progressives, we will welcome him because we will enjoy him singing ‘as e dey pain them, e dey sweet us’.”

The president may be openly enamoured of Mr Wike, but as long as the FCT minister can continue to engage successfully in the most disingenuous political straddle ever in Nigeria, nothing will compel him to make a choice between his concupiscent attraction to the APC and his cuckolding of the PDP. It suits his unorthodox politics to have his cake and eat it too. The PDP is incensed to be openly and contemptuously cuckolded, and the APC is beside itself having a piece of the Casanova. But with two lovers flanking him, Mr Wike is delirious. There is indication the PDP is nearing the end of its tether, and may soon damn the consequences and get rid of the FCT minister; but they are sobered by the fear that it might amount to cutting their nose to spite their face. Yet they must do something.

If the APC can tease nature to keep the PDP disquieted until a little later, or at least until it sunders irreparably, then they would feel accomplished. It is useless guessing how the dice would roll. After all, all sides to the ongoing farce know they are gambling, and will continue their indulgence until the crisis comes to a head sooner or later.

Bayelsa PDP commends Tinubu, Supreme Court, Wike, others for sustenance of democracy

Bayelsa PDP has described the trio of President Bola Tinubu, the Supreme Court, and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, as defenders of democracy.

Its acting chairman, George Turnah, in a statement, yesterday, said President Tinubu, Wike, the Supreme Court, 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and South-South Zonal Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih, have exemplified courage, boldness, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles in 2025.

He said their collective efforts to uphold democratic governance, especially in Rivers State, amidst challenges posed by undemocratic practices, were commendable.

Turnah, who described President Tinubu as a beacon of courage, said his leadership has been pivotal in defending democracy in Rivers State.

He said, “His steadfast courage in the face of adversity, coupled with his bold political will, has proven essential following the Supreme Court’s revelation that Rivers State was devoid of democratic governance. President Tinubu’s unwavering stance emphasises the need for integrity in governance and serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with leadership.”

He commended the Supreme Court for being guardians of justice, stressing that its decision in upholding the integrity and independence of the judiciary in a democratic context is refreshing.

“With courageous determination, the Supreme Court has boldly confronted the undemocratic practices of Governor Siminalaye Fubara, whom they have characterised as a despot. The Court’s commitment to justice exemplifies the critical checks and balances that are vital for the health of Nigeria’s democracy. This assertion has set a precedent for the necessary accountability required from those in power.”

2027: Again, Tinubu tells opposition, put your houses in order

    • Wike: Coalition died on day of conception
    • PDP will be hammered, carried on stretcher if internal crises persist— Ikechukwu

From President Bola Tinubu came a fresh warning yesterday to opposition parties to put their houses in order before the 2027 general election.

“The opposition should put their houses together before the next election so that nobody will accuse anybody of trying to stifle the opposition,” the President said in Abuja, 24 hours after his Democracy Day speech in which he said it was not his responsibility to help opposition  parties organise their affairs.

His speech yesterday was at the commissioning of the newly constructed Left-Hand Service Carriageway of Outer Southern Expressway OSEX Stage II from Ring Road 1 Junction to Wasa Junction, also known as Apo-Wasa Road, Abua where he was represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, whose ministry executed the project, said at the ceremony that he had no regret for naming the newly refurbished International Conference Centre Abuja after the President.

Akpabio, speaking for the President yesterday, said: “The President wants you to come together. If you cannot come together, the President cannot help you to come together.

“This is politics. And you will never come together when you continue to tell lies on a daily basis. Everything, you condemn. Nothing is good in your country. Was Nigeria like this in 1960? Was Abuja like this three years ago?

“Last year, you (Wike) gave us numerous projects and this year you repeated the same thing.

“Nobody will remember you for the way you answered your critics. They will remember you for the legacies that you are leaving on ground. And we are seeing the legacy.

“Because it is you. If they were the ones, they would have seen. But I can tell you that even the blind that walk through this Wasa Road will know that the President is working.

“This road stretching from Ring Road 1 junction all the way to Wasa Junction is a significant addition to the road network in the heart of Abuja.

“This very vital infrastructure fully demonstrates our commitment. It demonstrates our commitment to sustainable urban development, enhanced mobility, and improved quality of life for the people of the federal capital, and by extension to all Nigerians and visitors alike.”

Wike, responding to criticism over the naming of the International Conference Centre after Tinubu, said the President had done much for the FCT and was therefore deserving of the honour.

He also denied allegation that the contract for the refurbishing of the complex was inflated.

Built in 1991 at a cost of N240 million, the conference centre was rehabilitated with N39 billion.

Wike, who attributed the increase to inflation, also explained that the 15-kilometre Left-Hand Service Carriageway of Outer Southern Expressway OSEX Stage II was awarded in 2017 at a cost of N6 billion, but that in 2021, the cost was increased to N21 billion after variation.

His words: “Except you have chosen not to see; if God gave you eyes to see and you say, ‘I will not see’, then be blind. It is nobody’s fault.

“You know, there are people naturally, they don’t have good taste. They don’t have good taste. Everything in that International Conference Centre, everything was changed. If you love this country, you cannot criticise.

“I don’t normally watch them. I don’t like to know people’s names who don’t have anything to offer. If you want to die, I have a lot of land. I have land to give you where they will bury you. So if you want to die, you die.

“Why would you not commend somebody who has done well? You are not happy that they named ICC after Mr. President. Go and kill yourself.”

Wike said he is entitled and has the capacity to defend his boss.

“If you did not do well to defend your boss when you had the opportunity, it’s not our fault. I am here, I will defend my boss. And I have the capacity to defend my boss.

“I am not here to please unnecessarily critical people. I am here to please the residents of Abuja. In fact, I will continue to give you high blood pressure,” he said.

The minister also took a swipe at opposition figures, calling them ineffective.

“People have made promises to you. Nobody has fulfilled the promise. You are giving attention to those who you don’t know whether their name will be on the ballot or not. Coalition that was born and died the same day,” he said.

Speaking specifically on the achievements of his ministry in the last two years, Wike said: “Seventeen days, it has never happened in the history of this country, where a President will commission projects from day one to day 17.

“I am talking about commissioning; not flag-off.”

2027: PDP is doomed, if internal crises persist, says Ikechukwu

Reviewing the internal crises in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 elections, the Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, Okey Ikechukwu, said the opposition party has failed to provide formidable opposition owing to its internal crises.

He said the once robust party that used to run impressive campaigns has now “shrunk into a whimpering collection of confounded men and women who are pretending to have a political party.”

He added: “What else does the PDP do today other than talk about its quarrels? Well, occasionally, it makes press releases attacking the APC, thinking that that is political opposition.”

According to him, the real opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s administration comprises activists, civil society groups, concerned commentators, and elder statesmen who speak on national issues.

“The whole point of opposition is that you present a profile that will make you attractive to the next person, that will make somebody say to themselves, ‘No, no, no, I need this man to replace this other guy; they don’t know what they are doing.’

“Please, tell me what makes the PDP attractive today. Internally, it is in total disarray,” he said.

The professor said that the party’s current preparations for the 2027 general elections, amid the internal crises, do not show that it will perform better at the polls, except it manages the problems.

“So, in the next election, it will participate but it will not contest; it sounds contradictory.

“You are taking part in an event but your preparation is such that we know that you are going to get there and get beaten thoroughly and carried out on a stretcher, except a dramatic reconfiguration occurs within that party, with clear attention to the need to modify the optics of people you see in the party,” he said.

On the role of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in PDP, Ikechukwu said: “Wike, whether you like him or not, you must ask yourself: is this man a fool? The answer is no. Does he know what he is doing? Maybe. Can you disregard him? The answer is no.

“ It is the PDP that should be embarrassed that Wike is still a member, given all that he has done and all that he’s doing.

“It’s the PDP that should be embarrassed that it has not been able to manage such a man because Wike will be a political asset to anybody he works for. For those he is working for now, he is a political asset.

“But to allow him to bestride both lanes and be doing 160 kilometers per hour shows there is nobody controlling the traffic.

“The PDP, with all due respect to the distinguished people in that party, is making itself look more ridiculous, not every day but every hour as the next hour comes. They should stop kidding themselves.”

Addressing concerns over alleged plot by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to turn Nigeria into a one party state, President Tinubu in his Democracy Day speech on Thursday had said there was no such plan.

“To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise. While your alarm may be as a result of your panic, it rings in error,” he said.

Continuing, the President declared: “At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and at no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.

“I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC.

“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist.

“For me, I would say try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray.”

Tinubu, Oborevwori, Mbah,  others  celebrate ‘Uncle Sam’ at 90

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on the occasion of his 90th birthday, describing him as “a doyen of journalism” and “an elder statesman whose influence transcends the newsroom.”

In a tribute to the media icon he released yesterday, President Tinubu lauded Amuka-Pemu—fondly known as Uncle Sam—for his outstanding contributions to journalism and national development over the decades.

“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday. Uncle Sam remains a shining example of dedication, resilience and integrity within the media industry,” President Tinubu stated.

Tracing the media veteran’s illustrious career, the President highlighted Amuka-Pemu’s early days at Daily Times, his co-founding of The Punch alongside the late Chief Olu Aboderin, and his eventual establishment of Vanguard in 1984—now one of the country’s most influential newspapers.

“Mr. Amuka-Pemu has devoted most of his life to journalism. It is to his credit and managerial acumen that Vanguard is alive today, 41 years after its founding, despite the crisis in the media industry,” the President remarked.

Describing the 90-year-old as not only a pillar of Nigerian journalism but also a respected leader in his home state of Delta and across the South-South region, President Tinubu said Amuka-Pemu’s influence extended far beyond the pages of his newspaper.

“Today, he is not just a leader of the profession; he is a doyen. His leadership, from the altar of journalism, has influenced the media landscape and extended to his role as a respected leader in Delta State and the South-South geopolitical zone, making him an elder statesman,” the President said.

The President also noted that in recognition of his enduring contributions, Amuka-Pemu was among the distinguished Nigerians recently honoured at the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, where he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

“I urge younger journalists to emulate this highly respected publisher and leader. I wish Uncle Sam continued God’s grace and more years of impact. Our country is deeply grateful for his invaluable contributions to journalism and his enduring legacy”, the President added.

Also eulogizing the iconic publisher,  Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, in Asaba, praised Amuka-Pemu, a distinguished son and leader from Delta State, for his remarkable contributions to the media industry and nation-building.

The governor lauded Amuka-Pemu’s unwavering commitment to ethical journalism, his consistent fight against corruption, and his strong advocacy for good governance and the rule of law.

His words: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Sam Amuka-Pemu, our father, leader, and esteemed statesman on his 90th birthday, on behalf of my family, the government, and the good people of Delta State.

“Uncle Sam, as he is fondly called, has made a lasting and significant contribution to the Nigerian press, evident in the growth of Vanguard  Newspapers and his principled stance on issues of law, good governance, and anti-corruption.

“We owe you a debt of gratitude for your lifelong dedication to transforming journalism in Nigeria through sharp editorials, factual reporting, and impartial coverage.

“It gives me great joy to join your family, friends, and well-wishers in thanking Almighty God for His steadfast provision, protection, and guidance throughout your remarkable 90 years.”

Oborevwori’s counterpart,  Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State , in a congratulatory message to Amuka on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle @PNMbah yesterday, said the nonagenarian represented the best of Nigeria’s media industry.

He also hailed the veteran journalist on the conferment on him of the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, by President Bola Tinubu, describing it as a fitting tribute to a man who had given his all to his chosen career and nation building.

“I congratulate a man who many call Sad Sam, but who in reality dedicated himself to drawing away sadness from men.  Through his years as a newspaper columnist, he navigated life issues with a biting sarcasm that confounded perpetrators of evil and brought comfort to others.

“I celebrate an icon and a perfect gentleman, who is not only a media giant, but has also nurtured giants through his mentorship.

“His establishment of Vanguard with a motto of better life for the people was for him a continuation of using the media space to enthrone good.

“For a man, who refuses to celebrate himself despite the opportunities available to him, it is only proper that those who he has positively affected have chosen the occasion of his 90th birthday to celebrate his positive passion for mankind,” he stated.

Concluding, he said, “Amuka is indeed worthy of the national honour for his immense contributions to national development and the positive influence he has had in shaping minds through the power of the press.

“I enjoin younger journalists to draw lessons of integrity, resilience, and service from his life.

“It is in this light that I wish Uncle Sam a happy birthday and also many more years of good health and continued impact.”

Former President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, in a goodwill message, lauded Amuka’s monumental contributions to the journalism profession and to Nigeria’s socio-political development. He noted that both the media industry and the nation owe Amuka a debt of gratitude for his lifelong dedication and service.

Reflecting on Amuka’s illustrious career, Mark highlighted his influential column in the defunct Daily Times of Nigeria, which he said played a significant role in shaping national discourse and guiding the country’s development, even before the founding of Vanguard newspapers.

Senator Mark urged Amuka to continue to share his vast experience and wisdom in leadership and journalism with the younger generation, noting that his legacy remains a valuable resource.

He prayed for God’s continued grace upon Amuka’s life, wishing him good health, peace, and enduring wisdom in the years to come.

Soludo: Tinubu rescued economy from collapse, restored financial solvency

Anambra State governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has attested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration rescued Nigeria’s economy from imminent collapse and returned public finances to a path of solvency through bold structural reforms.

Speaking on June 12 at “The Platform Nigeria”, a civic engagement forum organised by The Covenant Nation and hosted by Pastor Poju Oyemade in Lagos, Governor Soludo praised the Tinubu administration’s economic agenda and called for a national rebirth rooted in ethics, ideology, and citizen responsibility.

According statement issued yesterday by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Soludo, who is a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said “the audacious structural reforms embarked upon by the current administration of HE Bola Ahmed Tinubu have rescued the economy from the tipping point”.

Soludo recounted that the economy, as of May 2023, resembled a “standing dead horse,” warning that public finances were on the verge of insolvency with potentially dire consequences, including mass layoffs and salary arrears.

“Public finance is back on a solvency path, and macro fundamentals are recovering positively,” he declared.

Backing his position with endorsements from global financial institutions, Soludo said: “The endorsements by the World Bank, IMF, London Financial Times, rating agencies—Fitch, Moody’s—are well deserved.”

He pointed out that although he had historically critiqued these institutions, their current praise for Nigeria’s reform trajectory should not be dismissed.

“Funny enough, when these institutions criticise the government, some people use them to validate their criticisms, but when the same institutions give a positive report, they are derided as ‘neoliberal, out-of-touch institutions,” he remarked.

Soludo urged public commentators to embrace a more rigorous and fact-based approach to analysing national economic policies.

“Many analysts have interesting ‘opinions’, but I urge them to go deeper: conduct rigorous counterfactual analysis and provide credible alternatives! As a friend said recently, the task is always easy, especially if you are not the one doing it,” he noted.

While acknowledging Nigeria’s broad reform needs—ranging from security to infrastructure and constitutional review—the Anambra Governor argued that implementation remains the key challenge, especially in a resource-constrained and unequal society.

He called for a fundamental national rebirth grounded not just in policies, but in values.

“We must deliberately create a critical mass of ‘new Nigerians’—who believe in her and are ready, if necessary, to die for her. No nation has prospered sustainably without a critical mass of patriotic, vigilant and actively participatory citizenry”, Soludo said.

Lamenting the erosion of values such as hard work and integrity, Soludo warned against a prevailing culture that glorifies wealth without effort.

“The ‘culture’ that celebrates and expects something for nothing or wealth without work must give way to a culture that rewards and celebrates hard work, enterprise and integrity,” he asserted.

He identified the Tinubu administration’s Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), alongside Anambra State’s One Youth, Two Skills programme and expanded education and healthcare support, as pivotal investments in Nigeria’s human capital.

“The shortest answer is to give the citizens stakes in the society by investing in their future… These programs excite the youths/students and could hopefully create ‘stakeholders’ in future projects,” he said.
