Tinubu celebrates veteran journalist Lekan Sote at 70

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated veteran journalist and columnist, Mr. Olalekan Odusami Sote, on his 70th birthday, describing him as a consummate professional whose career has spanned over five decades of dedicated service and intellectual excellence.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, Tinubu joined family, friends, and associates of Mr. Sote to celebrate the significant milestone, acknowledging a lifetime of distinction in the media and beyond.

“President Tinubu commends the columnist for his consistent demonstration of excellence, an attribute which has earned him many laurels,” the statement reads.

Among the many accolades earned by Sote are the 2nd prize of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Prize while in high school in 1975, the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities & Colleges Merit Award in 1982, and the prestigious 1st prize of the Diamond Award for Media Excellence (DAME) for Informed Commentary in 2018.

Beyond journalism, Tinubu praised Sote’s versatility and diligence in various professional roles, including as a research assistant, corporate development and human resource manager, advertising executive, and director in the textile industry.

“The President extols the veteran journalist for his versatility and diligence in service,” the statement noted, underscoring Sote’s multifaceted career across media, advertising, and corporate management.

Tinubu also offered prayers for continued vitality and clarity of mind for Mr. Sote, stating “he prays that God Almighty will continue to grant the respected journalist good health and sound mind to keep serving the nation through his intellectual contributions.”

  • City Boy Movement rallies youth behind Tinubu’s reform agenda

City Boy Movement rallies youth behind Tinubu’s reform agenda

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not assume office merely to manage Nigeria but to lead a fundamental and sustainable transformation of the nation, according to the Director General of the City Boy Movement, Oluwatosin Shoga.

Shoga said the vigour and sense of purpose driving the Renewed Hope Agenda across the country’s sociopolitical, security, and economic spheres demonstrates that President Tinubu came to transform, not just manage, Nigeria.

Addressing participants at the Imo State Youth Stakeholders’ Security Summit held over the weekend in Owerri, Shoga highlighted President Tinubu’s sustainable approach to tackling insecurity, alongside a strong commitment to meaningful youth empowerment.

He said the President has made it clear that no threat or personal interest would be allowed to compromise the safety of Nigeria or its human and material resources.

Noting that the summit’s theme, ‘Imo Safety: The Youth Responsibility’, aligns with President Tinubu’s vision, the youth leader emphasised that Nigeria’s security is non-negotiable, adding that the safety of Imo State and the nation remains a central pillar of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We’re not talking about just any form of empowerment. When young people acquire skills, have access to finance, and gain the knowledge needed to run their own businesses, they become builders, not destroyers. More importantly, they are less vulnerable to social vices,” he said.

He, however, called for a collective response to the security challenges, noting that government efforts alone are not enough, saying, “Government cannot win this battle alone.

“We need traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, and women’s organisations to help raise awareness for peace.

“In this battle against insecurity, retreat is not an option, surrender is off the table. The path to peace may be challenging, but with unity, determination, and faith in the Renewed Hope agenda, we shall overcome.”

In his remarks, the Imo State Commissioner for Youth and Talent Hunt, Mandella Ukaegbu, said the summit was part of Governor Hope Uzodinma’s initiatives to ensure lasting peace and security in the state.

He noted that the governor has launched several programmes to encourage youth participation in state affairs, particularly in promoting safety and security.

“The governor has empowered the youth through numerous initiatives, and this summit provides a platform for them to actively contribute to securing the state,” Ukaegbu said.

He added that the governor’s approach has instilled in the youth a strong sense of responsibility to build and not destroy, saying, “The message is clear, the youth understand that building the state and the nation is far better than destroying it.”

Representatives of various security agencies at the summit urged Imo youth to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or individuals within their communities.

They cautioned that criminals often act more swiftly than official responses, emphasising that security should never be taken for granted.

The officials also warned against cultism and illicit drug use, describing them as major contributors to social unrest.

Individuals were honoured at the event with awards for their exceptional contributions to peacekeeping in the State.

Southern Kaduna Professors reaffirm support for Tinubu, Uba Sani over inclusive governance

The Forum of Southern Kaduna Professors (FOSKAP) has reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu and Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, over their commitment to “inclusive governance”.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, Chairman of the Forum, John Laah, noted that Southern Kaduna is undergoing a significant economic and political transformation under Tinubu and Sani-led governments.

Laah noted that Tinubu and Sani’s inclusive governance policies have given the people of southern Kaduna a sense of belonging.

“I will say this, and you can quote me. Funnily, it is when we have a southerner as president that we tend to get significant appointments in southern Kaduna,” he said.

“Under former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck, we had ministers of works, finance, the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Defence Staff.

“Under northerners who became presidents (late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Muhammadu Buhari), we had nothing, not even a minister.”

He added that over the past two years, both the federal and the state governments have brought investments to southern Kaduna.

Laah conveyed the forum’s appreciation to the president for approving the establishment of the federal institutions in the state, noting that it has renewed the residents’ belief in the Tinubu-led administration.

He also expressed satisfaction with the appointments of Mathew Kukah, the Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, and Barnabas Qurix as the pro-chancellor and vice-chancellor of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, respectively.

“We consider it necessary to address you today on issues that are defining and will continue to define our future as a people and as a region,” Laah added

“Southern Kaduna is currently undergoing a phase of significant economic and political transformation, which has driven both our aspirations and expectations to elevated levels.

“As critical stakeholders of Southern Kaduna and indeed Nigeria, the Southern Kaduna Professors have resolved to, from henceforth, engineer corresponding actions to support the impactful initiatives by the government (at all levels) and by our elected and appointed representatives.”

  • 2027: Group warns opposition against smear campaign against Tinubu’s ministers

2027: Group warns opposition against smear campaign against Tinubu’s ministers

The Citizens Forum for Transparency and Integrity (CFTI) has called for heightened vigilance and unity as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released in Lagos on Monday, the group expressed concern over attempts by certain political figures to sway public opinion and government institutions in ways that could destabilise the country, especially President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

CFTI highlighted recent political activities, including meetings with key opposition leaders, including a former anti-graft agency chairman, which they believe may signal early efforts to influence the political landscape ahead of the elections

The group stressed the importance of safeguarding state institutions from political interference and urged all stakeholders to prioritise the national interest and democratic principles.

CFTI also called for support for President Tinubu’s administration and urged Nigerians to remain committed to peace, unity, and good governance.

CFTI also alleged that the former anti-graft official recently met with opposition figures in London, where discussions reportedly centred on targeting four ministers in Tinubu’s cabinet.

The group claimed this was part of a broader strategy to undermine the government and diminish public trust in preparation for the upcoming electoral cycle.

“We have it on good authority that the man, who is still nursing bitterness over his removal from office, has now found a new political mission to work with the opposition to paint this administration as corrupt and compromised,” the statement read.

The group said it is deeply concerned that the opposition is planning to use state institutions to launch politically motivated probes against top officials of the federal government.

“From what is available to us, we can confirm that four ministers have been deliberately selected for this smear campaign,” said Gidado.

“Three of them are former governors — David Umahi, Atiku Bagudu, and Bello Matawalle — while the fourth, Festus Keyamo, is a former minister under the Buhari administration who now holds a strategic portfolio in Tinubu’s cabinet as minister of aviation and aerospace development.”

Gidado claimed that in exchange for his role in this operation, the man has been promised a return to public office as National Adviser on Anti-Corruption, a newly proposed position that would oversee the EFCC, ICPC, and the Code of Conduct Bureau if the opposition succeeds in 2027.

“We find it extremely dangerous that a man who once occupied such a sensitive position is now being positioned as a political tool in the hands of those desperate to hijack power,” Gidado said.

The forum called on security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), to investigate the meeting held in London and monitor all back-channel activities aimed at weaponising anti-corruption institutions for political vendetta.

“This is not just about politics. It is about protecting our democratic institutions from manipulation and abuse. He may be out of office, but his network remains embedded within the system. We cannot allow such an infrastructure to be turned against loyal public servants whose only offence is their allegiance to the current government,” the statement noted.

CFTI also warned that the growing desperation in opposition ranks is a signal that the 2027 elections may be marred by coordinated blackmail, character assassination, and institutional sabotage if urgent steps are not taken to counter these schemes.

“We are watching a dangerous script unfold. The opposition is not preparing for elections; they are preparing for subversion. They know they can’t win at the ballot, so they’re trying to destroy from within,” Gidado stated.

He further noted that President Tinubu’s cabinet has, despite challenges, made significant progress in stabilising key sectors and attracting foreign investments — achievements he said some politicians are determined to frustrate for selfish reasons.

“Is it not curious that the same ministers driving reforms in infrastructure, industrial policy, defence, and aviation are the ones being targeted? This is not a coincidence. It is a pattern of sabotage,” he added.

The group urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to reject any narrative designed to weaken confidence in public institutions or derail the government’s momentum.

“This country belongs to all of us, and no one, not even a former EFCC chairman, should be allowed to turn anti-graft agencies into tools of political warfare. We owe our democracy more than that,” Gidado said.

“We are citizens with no political affiliation. Our only loyalty is to truth, justice, and national stability. And we will not hesitate to speak out against those plotting in the shadows.”

CFTI concluded by pledging to continue monitoring political developments and exposing any conspiracy against the current administration or democratic order.

Tinubu is a listening, pragmatic leader — Senator Girei

President Bola Tinubu has shown himself to be a listening and pragmatic leader nearly two years into his administration, according to Senator Abubakar Girei, a prominent politician and public affairs analyst in Adamawa State.

Speaking to journalists at his residence in Yola, Girei noted that many of the president’s decisions reflect a willingness to act on sound advice aimed at advancing the country’s interests.

“We recommended increased funding for security, and he delivered. He also allocated N1.5 trillion for agricultural revitalization through the Bank of Agriculture. That’s a listening president,” Girei said.

Girei, who represented the Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2003, said he is confident that the president will, in no long time, review many of his policies that Nigerians currently complain about.

He said, “There’s hardship—no doubt. I’m personally affected; I can’t even turn on my AC due to high electricity tariffs. That policy needs immediate reversal, among others like the exchange rate and fuel price. I am sure he will address these things. By 2027, many changes will happen, and APC will secure another victory—especially in Adamawa.”

Addressing the emergency rule that the president declared in Rivers State, Girei said it is a decision that many Nigerians condemn but which was inevitable and could only have come from a pragmatic president.

“Declaring a state of emergency and removing the governor is unconstitutional in my opinion. However, without it, the Assembly—whose members had defected and should have lost their seats—would have impeached Fubara and it could have caused chaos. So perhaps there was no better alternative at the time,” he said.

  • Reflections on Tinubu’s two-year transformative journey

Reflections on Tinubu’s two-year transformative journey

    By Dr. Kodilichukwu Okelekwe

As we mark the two-year anniversary of His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency on May 29, 2025, it is a moment to reflect not merely on the achievements but also on the vision, courage, and determination that have characterised his leadership.

In an era where the challenges facing Nigeria are both profound and complex, President Tinubu has exemplified the qualities of a true leader—one who embraces change and inspires hope.

One of the most significant milestones of President Tinubu’s administration has been the comprehensive economic reforms aimed at revitalising Nigeria’s economy.

The removal of fuel subsidy, a bold and often contentious decision, was a necessary step towards fiscal sustainability.

By redirecting these funds into critical infrastructure projects and social services, the government has begun to address the long-standing issues of inefficiency and corruption that have plagued the subsidy regime.

The introduction of the Naira-for-Crude policy represents another revolutionary step towards stabilising Nigeria’s economy.

This initiative not only seeks to strengthen the currency but also to create a more predictable environment for international trade.

Coupled with significant foreign exchange reforms, these measures have contributed to the accumulation of over $23 billion in net foreign reserves, providing a buffer against global economic volatility.

Furthermore, President Tinubu’s administration has actively promoted an environment conducive to both foreign and local investments.

By implementing tax reforms and enhancing revenue allocations to states and local governments, the government has empowered regional authorities to invest in their communities, thereby fostering economic growth at the grassroots level.

This commitment to decentralisation also includes the push for local government autonomy, ensuring that resources are utilised in a manner that reflects the unique needs of each region.

Infrastructure, as we all know, is the backbone of any thriving economy, and President Tinubu’s administration has made monumental strides in this area.

The ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway are not just projects; they are symbols of a renewed commitment to connecting the nation.

These legacy projects promise to enhance trade, boost local economies, and improve accessibility, ultimately bridging the gap between urban and rural areas.

Additionally, massive investments in transportation, energy, and housing are reshaping the nation’s landscape. These initiatives are not just about construction; they reflect a vision for a more integrated and prosperous Nigeria.

By prioritising infrastructure, President Tinubu is laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth that will benefit generations to come.

The future of any nation lies in its people, and President Tinubu’s dedication to human capital development is evident through initiatives like the students’ loan scheme and the substantial increase in the national minimum wage by over 100 per cent.

These policies are designed to empower the youth, making education more accessible and ensuring that workers receive fair compensation for their efforts.

This focus on human capital is vital in a country with a burgeoning population. By investing in education and workforce development, the administration is not only addressing immediate needs but also preparing a generation to meet future challenges.

The commitment to enhancing skills and opportunities will undoubtedly yield dividends, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship across the nation.

Security remains one of the most pressing issues in Nigeria, and President Tinubu’s administration has approached this challenge with courage and resolve. Acknowledging the multifaceted nature of security threats, the government has implemented strategies aimed at addressing both immediate and root causes of insecurity.

By strengthening the capacity of security agencies and fostering collaboration with local communities, President Tinubu is working to create a safer environment for all Nigerians.

This proactive stance not only aims to protect lives and property but also to build trust between the government and the citizens.

What sets President Bola Ahmed Tinubu apart is not just his policies but the unwavering spirit of leadership he embodies.

His courage to make tough decisions, such as subsidy removal, reflects a deep understanding of the long-term implications for Nigeria. His determination to see these policies through, despite opposition, showcases a commitment to the greater good.

Moreover, his self-confidence inspires those around him, fostering a culture of accountability and innovation within his administration.

The far-sightedness with which he approaches governance allows him to foresee potential challenges and opportunities, enabling proactive rather than reactive governance.

As we celebrate the two-year anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, it is essential to recognise the transformative journey that is underway in Nigeria.

The economic, political, and social achievements are not merely statistics; they represent a vision for a better, more prosperous Nigeria.

The path ahead will undoubtedly present new challenges, but with continued courage, determination, and a commitment to inclusive governance, there is no doubt that His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu will lead Nigeria towards a brighter future.

The foundation has been laid; the journey of transformation continues, and every Nigerian is invited to be part of this historic endeavour. Together, we can achieve greatness.

  • Tax Reform Bills aimed at economic prosperity by Tinubu, says Senate

Tax Reform Bills aimed at economic prosperity by Tinubu, says Senate

    • …why we expunged taxes on family income, inheritance from bills

The Senate has said that the passage of the four Tax Reform Bills now awaiting harmonization by the Senate and House of Representatives were aimed at the economic prosperity of the country by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (APC-Niger East), made this assertion while answering questions from reporters after the passage of the Bills by the Senate last Thursday.

Musa also disclosed that the proposal to tax family income and inheritance in one of the Bills, which had generated heated debate, has been expunged from the Bills passed by the Senate.

He said the action became necessary to give every section of the country a sense of belonging.

Speaking during the press briefing on how the Senate passed the Bills, Musa said: “Mine is very short because the Senate has done justice to what a lot of people think is not going to be possible.

“What we have done between yesterday and today, we have passed the four tax reform bills.

Read Also: Experts tout gains of Tax Reform Bills as Senate, Reps harmonise recommendations

“The Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Bill, the Nigerian Tax Administration Bill, the Joint Tax Board Establishment Bill, and the Nigerian Tax Bill. We have passed all these four bills, in which all these four bills, in one way or the other, are interconnected.

“The objective of these bills is to streamline our tax administration, to make it possible that our taxes and operations meet international best practices.

“What we have done is to see that we are able to meet with the targets of our counterparts in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) and you can see the tax to GDP ratio in Nigeria, what it is today, compared to what it is in countries like South Africa, Kenya, and others.

“So what we did was to look at these tax bills and do the needful. These tax bills, when they were presented by His Excellency, the President of this country, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he brought them with one aim, and to see how there will be economic prosperity.”

He said while taxes maybe inadequate to develop a nation, they are an important segment in raising finances to develop a country.

“We all know taxes are not enough to develop a nation. But taxes are a very important segment to developing a nation, because without money, without prudence and justifiable source of any money or revenue, you will not be able to get to meeting all those appropriated projects,” Musa said.

On how the bills were passed despite initial opposition from some parts of the country, he said they ensured that all critical stakeholders, including religious leaders, were part of the process of amending the Bills.

“So we had a public hearing. After the public hearing, we had a retreat where we interacted with stakeholders and professionals.

“We had almost 76 organisations that attended all our engagements with them, and the Ulamas were not left out of it. The same thing with the Christian Association of Nigeria.

“The Islamic Sharia Council was well represented, and the League of Imams was represented, and civil society organisations, too.

“They presented their cases. The OPTS (Oil Producers Trade Section), operators of the oil and gas industries, were there. The export processing zones made their presentations, and we considered, after taking about a week of deliberations at the retreat, we sat and consulted with our consultants.

“After that, the committee now sat to come out with these bills, as proposed bills, which today they have been passed, and I believe that Mr. President will do justice to them.

“What we did in these bills, we have created the Nigerian Revenue Service with an executive vice chairman and a non-executive chairman, and we said the Nigerian Revenue Service would need not least six executive directors. The President said to me that they have 14 directors.

“But we feel, since we are trying to meet international standards, we should do it in the right way and we tried to build a kind of strong corporate governance because when you are talking about streamlining, when you are talking about a single window of taxes, revenue, levies, whatever you call it, coming into the purse of government, we need a very strong corporate governance.

“For that, we said the President needs to appoint a chairman and ex officio representatives who will be representing the various ministries that have to do with either the physical or the monetary aspect of the economy.

“We also went on to create the office of the Ombudsman, who, from time to time, will be advocating, arbitrating on issues of tax disputes.

“We also have the Tax Tribunal, where, when you are supposed to pay tax and you are not paying your tax, we know where to take you so that it will act.

“It’s not a court of record, but when the tribunal decides to act, and after acting you didn’t do the needful, then there will be cause to go to the Federal High Court and again, the tax tribunal, when in a set-up like Nigeria, a lot of people, when it comes to what is due to government, what is due as a tax, they take it with laxity. They don’t take their obligations,” Musa said.

He said the Senate considered the proposal on Value Added Tax and ensured that every part of the county was given a sense of belonging.

He said, “In the Nigerian Tax Administration Bill, we looked at the VAT and we also looked at the issue of the development levy, which has generated a lot of controversies. We also looked at the issue of so that at least to give every part of this country their fair share.

“We looked at the distribution of the VAT, and we felt VAT is a product of consumption. And when you are talking about derivation, you define derivation to be based on consumption.

“We now say the place of consumption should be what that derivation means. And that applies to the issue of VAT distribution, where the federal government is going to retain 10%, the state will take 55%, and local governments 35%. “

He added, “Again today, we did another thing. We looked at the development levy, and we retained what they brought, but reduced it by 10% from 60% to 50%, and we took 10% from that to security, defence infrastructure, which is very important.

“Every one of you knows how challenging it has been today on the matter of security, and we need adequate funding so that our men in the war fronts will continue to do the needful to return this country to a stable and peaceful nation.

“What we also did was that we gave NASENI 10% and NITDA 10%. NELFUND, the student loan, we gave them 15%. We gave cybercrime 5%, and then defence infrastructure, we gave them 10%.

“So I think these are the areas of contention and the issue of the OPTS, where they have been talking about the presidential order, the existing laws, they have not been in the PIA, all those areas have been adequately taken care of.

“The export processing zone, where we are expecting that there will be a kind of backward integration and then at the same time, if you are given a license to operate an EPZ, what is expected of you is to produce there and export, so that you’ll be able to raise foreign reserves.

“We need that foreign currency, but if you produce at a processing zone and decide to bring it in, you are creating a kind of competition that our local producers here would not be able to stand because you are not paying taxes while you are producing.

“So we now say, if you are going to bring in anything above 25%, you must be subjected to almost equal to, in terms of tax, equal to what you are bringing in.

“So I think also there, justice has been done. We have also looked at how we are going to coordinate the collection of these taxes.

“You all agree with me that there have been so many leakages. MDAs will collect revenue and keep it. Some will not even declare it.

“But now, with this Tax Reform Bill, we’ll be able to look at areas that will be able to use technology to get this revenue, at least reduce shortages to a minimum.

“And what is that? The single window. So I believe Nigerians will see something nice.

He said that President Tinubu deserves commendation for ensuring that the obsolete laws are amended and updated to meet current economic realities.

He said, “We must commend Mr. President for the vision. Some of these laws have been there for a very long time. So, what he has been able to do now, no matter what you think, no matter the resistance, there is no better time to do what we have done than now.

“I believe that Nigeria will prosper. I want to use this medium to commend the tenacity of the Senate President because he has been able to allow everyone to hear their voices. And we saw reason with some of them, and amendments were made where necessary.

“I believe we are going for harmonisation and at the end of the day, at the end of the conference, we are going to give Nigeria a document that also in the next 50 years, Nigeria will be so proud of it.

“I must tell you, I’m very proud of what we have done because we sacrificed. We did everything to the best of our ability, and I know that nobody can judge anyone, but God will judge us.

“If we do the right thing, he will see it. If we did not do it, by the time this document is out, you will be able to make your judgments.”
