Tinubu celebrates Benue Governor Alia on 59th birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm wishes to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia on yesterday’s celebration of his 59th birthday.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu hailed the clergyman-turned-politician for his enduring commitment to compassion, peace, and integrity as a man of the cloth and as a public servant.

“The President extols Governor Alia’s compassion and humanitarian spirit, which is evident from his service in the priesthood and public office.

“He notes that the Governor has remained faithful to his calling, translating the virtues of integrity and selflessness into transformative leadership for the people of Benue State,” the statement said.

Governor Alia, who assumed office in 2023, has earned national attention for his calm yet firm approach to leadership in a state long plagued by ethno-religious strife and developmental challenges.

President Tinubu lauded Alia’s commitment to peace and stability, praising him for his “courage and clarity” in pursuing lasting solutions.

President Tinubu also underscored his administration’s support for the governor’s developmental agenda, which he said aligns with the broader goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda — his signature national policy framework aimed at securing the country, uplifting citizens, and promoting unity.

Tinubu to Malian envoy: West Africa is stronger together

…welcomes six new envoys, calls for deeper collaboration across continents

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering support for Mali’s democratic transition and called for greater unity and economic cooperation among West African nations, declaring that the region is “better off together.”

The President made these remarks on Thursday at the State House in Abuja while receiving the Letter of Credence from the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Mali, Cheick Oumar Coulibaly.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu said, “We should strengthen our bilateral relations, and it is hoped that Mali will achieve its democratic goals. We are open to any support we can render. I want you to see yourself as a member of the family here.

“For me, we are one in West Africa and Africa. The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has made its position clear, but no nation can succeed alone. We see Mali as a brother and are ready to collaborate and exchange ideas”, the President said.

Emphasising Nigeria’s open-door policy and its commitment to regional integration, Tinubu added “I can assure you that Nigeria is home for you. When you feel like seeing us, our doors will always be open.”

The Ambassador of Mali thanked the President for consistently providing leadership for the sub-region and the continent.

“I wish to convey the fraternal greetings of the Head of State, Gen. Assimi Goïta, and the highest appreciation of the Malian people for the Nigerian leadership and support,” he said.

Coulibaly said Nigeria had maintained its leadership role in Africa while acknowledging the Nigerian military’s supply of troops for various UN peace missions on the continent and the subregion.

“The Head of State particularly told me that I was on a mission to the biggest country in Africa. He said he knows it’s not easy, but I should look for solutions as a diplomat. We know that Africans must solve African problems.

He noted, “I appreciate you as a leader and father in Africa”.

The President’s remarks come amid shifting regional alliances and Nigeria’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize and unify the West African subregion, particularly as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso pursue an independent security and economic bloc through the AES.

President Tinubu also received letters of credence from five other envoys, urging closer cooperation to promote global peace, understanding, and prosperity.

“We will continue to work together. You can see the situation across the world. No one can do it alone. We will continue to collaborate in areas of knowledge and technical know-how,” he said.

The Tanzanian High Commissioner acknowledged the significant impact of Nigerian investments in Tanzania, citing contributions from the Dangote Group, UBA, GTB, and Sahara Energy.

“We should strengthen collaboration not only government to government but also people to people as we see in the film industry and sports. Nigeria has a vibrant and wonderful film industry, and it is collaborating with Tanzania,’ the Ambassador stated.

In his meeting with the Russian ambassador, President Tinubu highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing technical partnership with Russia and expressed a desire to expand cooperation in steel production, science, education, and nuclear energy to bolster electricity supply.

“Our partnership has been fulfilling, but we need more technological support with our rapidly growing population. The Ajaokuta Steel Complex, constructed by Russian companies, will only realise its potential when fully operational,” President Tinubu stated.

Ambassador Podelyshev reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to expand cooperation, particularly in education and energy, emphasising ongoing agreements on nuclear power.

Addressing the Swiss ambassador, President Tinubu pledged to create a more investor-friendly environment through regulatory reforms, especially concerning potential litigation.

“We will address any legal issues that could impede progress in our economic relations,” he assured.

Ambassador Egloff highlighted growing Swiss investments in Nigeria, noting expansions by companies such as Nestlé and Lafarge in Lagos, Kano, and Gombe States, and praised ongoing collaboration on security and intelligence.

President Tinubu thanked the Bosnian ambassador for the progress in bilateral relations.

The Bosnian ambassador urged President Tinubu to honour an invitation to visit Bosnia to appreciate the progress made in his country.

  • Tinubu approves revised procurement thresholds to boost efficiency, ease budget execution

Tinubu approves revised procurement thresholds to boost efficiency, ease budget execution

In a move aimed at modernising Nigeria’s public procurement framework and improving budget implementation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a comprehensive upward review of procurement thresholds for federal ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).

The newly revised thresholds, announced Wednesday by the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), reflect prevailing economic realities such as inflation and shifting market dynamics, and are expected to significantly ease bureaucratic bottlenecks in the public contracting process.

According to the Director-General of the BPP, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, the reform is a direct outcome of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and will enhance service delivery while promoting transparency and accountability.

“This is a decisive shift to empower MDAs, streamline procurement procedures, and decongest the Federal Executive Council (FEC) from routine contract matters. With these new thresholds, we are prioritising efficiency, value for money, and timely project delivery”, Dr. Adedokun said.

A statement issued by Head of Public Relations at the BPP, Zira Zakka Nagga, said under the revised structure, only contracts valued at ₦5 billion and above for goods and consultancy services, and ₦10 billion and above for works, will require FEC approval.

Contracts below these thresholds will now be handled by ministerial and parastatal tenders boards or accounting officers, depending on cost.

For instance, ministerial tenders boards can now approve goods and consultancy contracts valued between ₦50 million and less than ₦1 billion, while parastatal tenders boards are authorised to approve similar contracts up to ₦500 million.

Accounting officers, such as permanent secretaries or directors-general, can handle smaller procurements below these amounts.

“This delegation of responsibility will help reduce delays in contract awards and improve budget absorption rates,” Adedokun said.

The BPP also announced a revision of procurement methods to align with the new thresholds.

International or national competitive bidding is now mandatory for goods worth ₦1 billion and above, and for works valued at ₦5 billion and above.

For procurements below these figures, alternative methods such as requests for quotations and shopping (market survey) are permitted.

Additionally, the threshold for prequalification has been set at ₦500 million and above for goods and non-consultant services, and ₦1 billion and above for works.

Consultant services will be procured using methods like quality and cost-based selection for contracts above ₦100 million.

“The reform is also about strengthening the ease of doing business and stimulating economic growth. By simplifying processes and encouraging competition, we can create more jobs and support local businesses”, the BPP DG stated.

President Tinubu’s approval includes provisions to promote the Nigeria First/Local Content Policy, ensuring that locally manufactured goods and services are prioritized in federal procurements.

According to the BPP, new guidelines will soon be issued to foster community-based and affirmative procurement for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), women, and persons with disabilities.

“Local content is a cornerstone of these reforms. We want to build capacity, promote indigenous industries, and reduce our dependency on foreign products”, Adedokun said.

As part of the reform, all MDAs are now required to publish monthly procurement reports on both their websites and the BPP’s portal.

The reports must include details of contracts awarded and will be submitted to the highest authorities across the executive, legislature, and judiciary.

“This new requirement promotes transparency and accountability. It ensures that oversight bodies have access to real-time procurement data and can track performance”, Adedokun said.

To facilitate smooth implementation, MDAs are directed to allocate budgetary provisions for the training of procurement officers.

Only BPP-approved trainers—individuals, firms, or institutions—will be authorised to conduct such training to ensure consistency with the Public Procurement Act (PPA) 2007.

“All procurements under the 2025 budget and subsequent ones must follow the revised bidding documents and contract conditions provided by the BPP,” the statement said.

The BPP will also invoke its powers under Section 6(e) of the Procurement Act to debar contractors involved in fraudulent or corrupt practices or who frustrate project implementation.

Furthermore, the Bureau will collaborate with the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation to enforce conduct rules for procurement officers and recommend disciplinary actions where needed.

The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is also expected to issue a service-wide circular to guide MDAs in implementing the new thresholds.

“These reforms place a higher degree of responsibility on MDAs to act with integrity. Those who attempt to flout or sabotage the revised thresholds will face administrative sanctions. It is no longer business as usual”, Adedokun emphasised.

The BPP said it is also enhancing its regulatory role, shifting its focus from implementation to oversight, monitoring, procurement audits, and post-review activities.

These will be conducted in collaboration with anti-corruption agencies and other stakeholders.

With the new procurement thresholds taking immediate effect, the Tinubu administration aims to not only boost the performance of Nigeria’s procurement ecosystem but also lay the foundation for a more responsive and transparent governance structure.

“All stakeholders—MDAs, contractors, procurement officers—must align with this new direction. Together, we can ensure the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda and deliver real value to Nigerians”, Adedokun concluded.

Tinubu deserves second term, says Igbo community leader

The leader of the Igbo Community and Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu has commended Anambra Governor, Charles Soludo and the entire Ndi Anambra for endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for second term as well as his adoption as the candidate for the 2027 presidential election by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Eze Nwachukwu, who stated this while addressing reporters at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre on Nwachukwu Drive, Okota Lagos on Sunday, revealed that “as a strong member of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political dynasty since 1998, I and the Igbo Community which is the largest non-indigenous ethnic group in Lagos, will continue to mobilise the Igbo in Lagos for the electoral victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and at the federal level.”

The Igbo leader also praised Governor Soludo and the state’s traditional rulers for conferring on the President the traditional title of Dike Si Mba of Ndigbo (hero from another land).

Nwachukwu said the traditional title conferred on President Tinubu by the 197 traditional rulers led by the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Chidubem Iweka of Obosi, resonates with the Ezinna of Ndigbo (good father of Ndigbo) chieftaincy title which the Igbo Community which he leads in Lagos State conferred on President Tinubu in 2004, adding that because of Tinubu’s love for the Igbo Community in Lagos, he elected to be Tinubu’s chief grassroots mobiliser for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election and re-election as the then Lagos State Governor.

Nwachukwu further stated that the Igbo Community, through his mobilisation strategy, has supported President Tinubu as governor and the ruling party till date.

On why President Tinubu should be voted for his second term in 2027, the leader of the Igbo Community in Lagos stated that “Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s achievements include his tenure as the Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007), where he initiated new road construction and received various awards for his leadership. He was recognised for improving the living environment and for his efforts in computerised governance system.

“At the national level, as president, Tinubu’s financial reforms have surpassed the 1986 structural adjustment programme (SAP) in his determination to overhaul the Nigerian economy and government finances drastically.

“Tinubu is transforming Nigeria through his Renewed Hope Agenda. Honest Nigerians will attest to the fact that he has and is evolving critical economic and political policies and programmes that were aimed at making Nigeria great again.

“We concede that Nigerians are going through tough economic and social situations. I am confident that the Tinubu administration is working hard to ameliorate the hardship by evolving policies and programmes to ensure that the economy bounces back, and the result will ameliorate Nigerians’ economic misery.”

Tinubu lauds NMU, commits to varsity’s growth

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded academic progress at the Nigeria Maritime University (NMU), pledging continued support to its infrastructural and research growth.

He also tasked the new graduates of the institution to bring their knowledge to bear in development of the nation’s maritime sector.

Speaking in an address on his behalf by Prof. Edoba Omoregie, (SAN), Vice Chancellor (VC) of the University of Benin, at NMU’s 2nd Convocation ceremony at the weekend at Okerenkoko, Warri South-West Council Area of Delta State, Tinubu, hailed the institution’s focus in promoting values towards sustainable peace and stability of the region.

He charged the graduates to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, and service, and to contribute meaningfully to national development in the maritime sector and other spheres of human endeavor that would enhance the nation’s potentials in terms of revenue generation.

In his opening speech, NMU Vice Chancellor, Professor (Engr.) Emmanuel Adigio, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the recent assent into law the bill establishing the University, noting that by that singular act the Visitor to the institution had demonstrated his deep sense of patriotism and rare commitment to enhancing both educational and technological development of the nation.

He assured that the University would continue to strive harder to ensure it does not disappoint the trust reposed on it by the President for signing the bill into law, adding that it will continue to produce the best trained middle and high level manpower in the industry that would bring innovative ideas to bear in making the sector a viable one towards sustainable development of the nation.

The VC said: “Before proceeding to other details regarding this Ceremony, I would like to use this unique opportunity to inform this Convocation Assembly that the Nigeria Maritime University has come of age. With the recent signing into Law of the Bill establishing this University by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the University is now set for greater achievement.

“In the next few years, the Institution will record phenomenal expansion in its programmes directed at maximising the growth and development-generating potentials of the marine and blue economy. Our greatest gratitude goes to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for putting Nigeria Maritime University on his desk of beneficial attention and focus.”.

“The University’s vision is to be the maritime institution of first choice for all those who seek to make a career in the maritime industry, and to contribute towards the creation of employment and wealth in the global maritime economy. These are some of the characteristic features that make NMU unique amongst other tertiary institutions in Nigeria”.

He added:  “There is no gainsaying that, youth restiveness is at its lowest ebb now, and pipeline vandalism has reduced in the Niger Delta region, the hub of exploration of oil and gas activities, thereby helping to boost the economy of the nation”.

“There is no doubt that the establishment of the Nigeria Maritime University in this region has contributed significantly to the peace we now enjoy in our waterways as well as the security and safety of the nation’s oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta”.

On faculties and programmes, Adigio, said the university commenced in 2018 with 13 programmes, warehoused in three (3) Faculties; Faculty of Engineering: Faculty of Environmental Management and Faculty of Transportation, respectively.

“In addition to the foregoing, there is also a Basic Studies Unit which lays the relevant science foundation for the programmes. This Unit is already in the process of becoming a full-fledged Faculty of Science”.

On the Campus structure of the institution, he noted: “At present, the University has a two-campus structure. Although the main campus of the University is at Okerenkoko, academic activities started at the Kurutie Campus, which currently accommodates the Faculty of Engineering, the School of Basic Studies as well as the Central Administration”.

“As a coping strategy, drawn from the inability of the Take-off Campus at Kurutie to accommodate the growing number of staff and students, the University decided to operate a Campus at Okerenkoko with the cooperation of stakeholders, pending the completion of construction work at the Permanent Site at Okerenkoko”

“The Campus at Okerenkoko currently accommodates the Faculties of Transportation and Environmental Management”.

“The nature of its location affords several opportunities, while also precipitating a number of challenges that must be addressed through the deployment of the necessary but limited resources. For example, engineers who are familiar with this environment know that it costs much more to do any construction work here than it is elsewhere on land”.

“This observation applies to all categories of physical development projects, including water and electricity facilities, roads, communication infrastructure, building construction, and so on. However, over the years, the University has tried its best to utilise in the most efficient manner, whatever minimal resources that had been placed at its disposal”.

“Upon coming on board as Vice-Chancellor, the first challenge that I confronted was that of providing water for staff and students in the University, as well as for the community, as the University exists as an integral part of the community where it is located. In order to address this challenge, we revived and took up the management of a water facility in the Kurutie community”.

“As at today, we have improved on the quality and quantity of water supplied from this facility. It is also important to put it on record that a mega water project sponsored by SPDC, is currently being developed for the Campus at Okerenkoko”.

“We have also commissioned the Faculty of Engineering offices and lecture hall building, which were built by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) for the University through its community and corporate social responsibility programmes; a well-furnished mechanical engineering workshop built by TETFund to house all the machines and tools, which were lying outside unused for over a long period of time”.

“We would like to particularly express our gratitude to the Government of Delta State, under the leadership of His Excellency, Rt. Honourable Sherriff Oborevwori, the Executive Governor of Delta State, for building and donating a Faculty Complex to the University, which is already occupied by the Faculty of Environmental Management at Okerenkoko”.

“In addition, a road from the community to the permanent site is also being constructed by the Delta State Government, thus  confirming its continuous support for the University.

On accreditation status of academic programmes, he said; “It is gratifying to note that as at the moment, all the thirteen (13) programmes offered in the University have been accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Furthermore, the five programmes in Engineering have been accredited by their professional body, the Council for the Registration of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN)

On financial management and practices, he disclosed that they have been able to set up proper and appropriate auditing and procurement systems in the University in order to ensure that the processes of fund use and the procurement of goods, and services, are carried out in line with current best practices in financial management in public tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

In the area of Staff Development and Capacity building, Prof Adigio said; “In the past five years, we have also sustained an efficient staff development programme for academic staff, including capacity building for non-teaching staff, scholarships and financial support for staff attending conferences and workshops at both national and international levels”.

He noted a substantial increase in the provision of accommodation for the students, stating that; “For example, there is now increased hostel accommodation in both campuses, including the commissioning of the 96 bed-space hostel in Kurutie Campus, while a 180 bed-space hostel at the Okerenkoko campus is due for commissioning.

We are also hoping to commission a 250 bed-space hostel at the Kurutie Campus, before the end of my tenure as Vice-Chancellor.”.

The VC however highlighted the shortcomings in the provision of staff accommodation, describing it as a major challenge, said; “At present, the University does not have the financial resources to develop and build residential structures, and we are using this opportunity to call on the Federal Government and other development partners to come to the assistance of the University.

“The provision of residential accommodation would be a key factor in the University’s ability to retain high quality staff in the near future”, he posited.

In the area of Sports Development, he hinted that Sporting activities are an important part of life on campus with dividends that accrue beyond the school years. Scientifically, physical exercise helps the mental and emotional development of the body.

“It is for these all-important justifications that the University is striving to seek ways and means of building sporting facilities in our unique environment”.

While explaining that the students maximize the use of the available sports facilities, such as the swimming pool, basketball pitch, and table tennis boards, he noted that the University’s Gym Building is about being completed, and it is hoped that it would be commissioned sometime in June this year.

“After participating in the status of an Observer at the NUGA games in the last two years, this year, NMU participated fully in the 2025 Federation International Sport Universities, FISU Trials, where they obtained the highest medal haul with ten gold, nine silver and six bronze medals in swimming and taekwondo for the University, therefore, qualifying to represent Nigeria in Germany”.

He explained that the Directorate of Partnerships, Linkages and Collaborations

has midwifed partnerships with more than five international and national organizations. The University recently organised its First International Conference on the Blue Economy in February this year.

“This occasion brought together academics, researchers, and policy makers from Nigeria and the international community to rob minds. A ground-breaking moment during the International Conference was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of research partnership between NMU and Earth Law CenterAfrica (with headquarters in the USA)”.

Commenting on Quality Assurance, Prof Adigio, said the university is becoming synonymous with excellence; even as we remain determined in ensuring the quality of academic programmes for the making of highly skilled and trained graduates that will be self-reliant and ultimately become job creators, especially within the context of the maritime sector.

“In order to nurture a culture of high-quality assurance in all programmes, the University has developed a framework for continuous quality management and control”.

On students performance, the VC noted; “As already indicated, this is a Combined Convocation Ceremony for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions for the 13 academic programmes of the University.

“The total number of students that we are graduating for the two academic sessions is 870. This figure represents about 273% increase over and above the 233 students that we graduated during the Combined Convocation Ceremony for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions, which was held in November 2023. This is one indication of the fact that the University is fast-growing”.

“We must at this juncture congratulate all the students, who, today, have been found worthy to be decorated as graduates of Nigeria’s premier maritime university. To all parents and guardians here present, we also congratulate you and share in your joys on the successful graduation of your children and wards”.

“We would like to assure you that your investment in the education of your children is a beneficial investment, for they have been adequately prepared to go into the world with confidence and new skills for an assured better quality of life, and contribution to the development of their own native land, our dear Nation, Nigeria”, he stated.

Tinubu approves recruitment of armed forest guards to reclaim forests

In a decisive move to bolster national security and reclaim Nigeria’s vast forestlands from criminal elements, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment and deployment of a new unit of forest guards.

The initiative, announced on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, is aimed at flushing out terrorists and criminal gangs who have used Nigeria’s 1,129 forests as safe havens.

According to Dare’s verified X handle, @SundayDareSD, the recruitment drive will be carried out through a coordinated effort between the federal and state governments, with oversight provided by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Ministry of Environment.

The President directed that the new forest guards be professionally trained and properly armed to meet the security challenges within the country’s forests, many of which have been exploited by kidnappers, bandits, and insurgents in recent years.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to securing every inch of Nigerian territory, declaring that no part of the country would be abandoned to lawlessness.

“To secure the country’s forests, President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of forest guards to secure Nigeria’s 1,129 forests.

“In a statement posted on X by Special Adviser Sunday Dare, the President directed that the forest guards be well trained and armed to flush out terrorists and criminal gangs hiding in the forests.

“The recruitment is a joint effort between federal and state governments.

“The Office of the National Security Adviser and the Ministry of Environment will oversee full implementation.

“Thousands of young Nigerians are expected to be employed for the initiative.

“President Tinubu reiterated that his administration will not surrender any part of Nigeria’s territory to criminals, vowing to take back the forests,” the statement reads

This latest security initiative is part of the Tinubu administration’s broader strategy to address the root causes of insecurity while simultaneously providing employment opportunities for the country’s teeming youth population.

The recruitment process is expected to begin soon, with details on application and training to be jointly released by the supervising agencies.

The initiative is also seen as a way of complementing existing security operations and environmental protection strategies.

As security agencies ramp up efforts to regain control over ungoverned spaces, the forest guard program adds a critical layer of localized security—one that experts hope will help reduce the operational reach of criminal networks and restore public confidence in rural and peri-urban areas.

Tinubu more popular in Kaduna now than under El-Rufai, says Sule

    • Nasarawa governor: state police urgently needed

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu currently enjoys more support in Kaduna State than he did in 2023 under former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai.

In an interview on a national television live programme last night, Governor Sule dismissed recent comments by El-Rufai that President Tinubu’s popularity was on the decline in the North.

The governor insisted that the political reality on the ground was the opposite of El-Rufai’s claim.

“President Tinubu has more support today in the same Kaduna State where El-Rufai comes from than he used to have when El-Rufai was the governor. After all, President Tinubu got only 300,000 and something votes when El-Rufai was the governor. He lost Kaduna at that time,” Sule said.

The Nasarawa State governor noted that under incumbent Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, public sentiment towards the President has improved significantly, particularly in the southern part of the state.

“If you look at Southern Kaduna, and even from my local government in Nasarawa State, which shares a boundary with some parts of Kaduna, I know what the people say about President Tinubu today. The support is stronger under Governor Uba Sani than it was under Nasir El-Rufai,” he added.

Sule said his personal experience while travelling through Kaduna by road gave him a direct sense of the mood on the ground.

“That’s why I sometimes go by road—to stop, interact, and understand what people are really saying,” he said.

The governor, a senior member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), also addressed the issue of public misinformation, warning Nigerians against taking political rhetoric at its face value.

“Politicians can say whatever they want to say. But the reality is that President Tinubu today has more support in Kaduna than in 2023, when he (El-Rufai) lost the election there by over 300,000 votes to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he stressed.

Sule made a strong case for the establishment of state police, arguing that community policing structures currently in place across various states are inadequate to deal with the escalating threat of armed banditry and criminal violence.

“We have Amotekun (in the Southwest), Katsina Marshals, Sokoto Marshals, Zamfara Marshals, and other vigilantes. But they lack proper training and the right equipment. You cannot expect results when your security personnel carry Dane guns and face criminals armed with AK-47s and automatic machine guns,” the governor said.

According to him, a state police will operate under a regulated structure with proper oversight and training provided by national security institutions, such as the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and the military.

“We’re not saying state police should be totally independent. They’ll be trained by the same national institutions. But the key is that they will be recruited from their own communities and they understand the terrain better,” he added.

Sule noted that this model would strengthen accountability and responsiveness, as state police officers would be locally based and trusted by the people they serve.

“If I employ someone in Keffi, he’s not going to work in Lafia or Akwanga. He’ll work in Keffi, where he understands the area, the people, and the issues. That’s what we need for effective security,” he said.

Responding to concerns about the timeline for impact, the governor expressed optimism that if approved, state police would begin to reduce violent crimes, such as kidnapping and armed robbery, within months.

“These criminals are also afraid for their lives. If they know the person facing them is well-trained and armed, they’ll think twice. So, yes, state police will reduce kidnappings and insecurity significantly,” Sule said.

Also, the Special Adviser to the President on Public Communications and Media, Daniel Bwala, has said the coalition of opposition politicians that former Kaduna State Governor El-Rufai is spearheading, has already lost steam.

Speaking on a TV programme yesterday, Bwala described El-Rufai’s political movement as having no real influence or connection with grassroots politics.

He noted that southern voters would not vote for a northern candidate, if the southern candidate has not completed his eight-year tenure.

The presidential aide gave the example of a former governor (El-Rufai) whose political popularity he said had declined significantly before he left office.

“In the second half of his term, when he was doing his second term, he was so unpopular that the APC lost three Senate seats and a number of House of Representatives, and the president lost the election there,” Bwala said.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has said that President Bola Tinubu currently enjoys more support in Kaduna State than he did in 2023 when former Governor Nasiru El-Rufai held sway.

Speaking during a live interview on TVC News on Tuesday evening, Governor Sule dismissed recent comments by El-Rufai, suggesting that President Tinubu’s popularity in the North is on the decline, insisting that the political reality on the ground tells a different story.

“President Tinubu has more support in the same Kaduna State where El-Rufai comes from today than he used to have when El-Rufai was the governor. After all, President Tinubu got only 300,000 and something votes when El-Rufai was the governor—he lost Kaduna at that time”, Sule said.

Governor Sule pointed out that under the current Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, public sentiment toward the President has improved significantly, particularly in areas such as Southern Kaduna.

“If you look at Southern Kaduna, and even from my local government in Nasarawa, which borders some parts of Kaduna, I know what the people say about President Tinubu today. The support is stronger under Governor Uba Sani than it was under Nasiru El-Rufai,” he added.

He explained that his own experience travelling through Kaduna by road gave him a direct sense of the mood on the ground, saying, “That’s why I sometimes go by road—to stop, interact, and understand what people are saying.”

The Nasarawa governor, a senior member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), also addressed the issue of public misinformation, warning against taking political rhetoric at face value.

“Politicians can say whatever they want to say. But the reality is that President Tinubu today has more support in Kaduna than in 2023, when he lost the election there by over 300,000 votes to the PDP,” he emphasised.

Turning to security, Governor Sule made a strong case for the establishment of state police, arguing that community policing structures currently in place across various states are inadequate to deal with the escalating threat of armed banditry and criminal violence.

“We have Amotekun, Katsina Marshals, Sokoto Marshals, Zamfara Marshals, and other vigilantes. But they lack proper training and the right equipment You cannot expect results when your security personnel carry dane guns and face criminals armed with AK-47s and automatic machine guns”, he said.

According to Sule, state police would operate under a regulated structure with proper oversight and training, provided by national security institutions such as the Nigerian Police Force and the military.

“We’re not saying state police should be totally independent. They’ll be trained by the same national institutions. But the key is that they will be recruited from their own communities, and they understand the terrain better,” he explained.

The governor said this model would strengthen accountability and responsiveness, as state police officers would be locally based and trusted by the people they serve.

“If I employ someone in Keffi, he’s not going to work in Lafia or Akwanga. He’ll work in Keffi, where he understands the area, the people, and the issues. That’s what we need for effective security”, he said.

Responding to concerns about the timeline for impact, Governor Sule was optimistic that, if approved, state police would begin to reduce violent crimes such as kidnapping within months.

“These criminals are also afraid for their lives. If they know the person facing them is well-trained and armed, they’ll think twice. So yes, state police will reduce kidnappings and insecurity significantly,” he said.

He emphasised that while no country is entirely crime-free, the presence of a capable and community-rooted police force would serve as a strong deterrent to criminals.

“If a kidnapper shoots into the air in a market and no one is there to stop him, that’s a problem. But if there are community police present and ready to respond, it’s a different story. That’s what we need,” Sule concluded.

Tinubu’s economic reforms fuel growth, renew investor confidence – Bagudu

Nigeria’s economy is on a promising rebound, thanks to bold reforms spearheaded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, according to minister of budget and economic planning, Atiku Bagudu.

In a wide-ranging interview for an upcoming television documentary marking President Tinubu’s second year in office, Bagudu described the period as “two years well spent,” marked by growth, stability, and a growing wave of investor optimism, both at home and abroad.

“Mr. President confronted Nigeria’s economic realities with bold and necessary choices—tough as they might be—and those measures are now yielding results,” the minister stated.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by special adviser to the president on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Bagudu cited four consecutive quarters of economic growth, stability in the foreign exchange market, and renewed private sector confidence as evidence of a reform agenda that is taking hold.

“We have seen investors from Brazil, Belarus, and Saudi Arabia increasingly entering our agricultural space. The world economic community and multilateral institutions are putting more faith in our economy,” he said.

According to the Minister, key to this turnaround has been the administration’s firm commitment to transparency, policy credibility, and structural reform, elements he described as essential for rebuilding trust in Nigeria’s economic direction.

“For the first time in 25 years, Nigeria is refining oil,” he noted, highlighting President Tinubu’s decision to allow domestic crude oil sales in naira to local refiners as a bold step toward energy independence and economic nationalism.

He also lauded the removal of the costly fuel subsidy regime and the unification of the foreign exchange market as landmark reforms that restored fiscal discipline and market confidence.

“We were losing 5% of our GDP on fuel subsidy, money going to just a few. Mr. President took the courageous step to end it”, he said.

The minister emphasised that the foreign exchange reforms had ended long-standing distortions and favouritism in the system.

“We now have a fair market—willing buyer, willing seller—which has generated revenue growth and boosted private sector confidence,” he added.

On the fiscal front, Bagudu said the 2024 and 2025 budgets reflect a deliberate balance between prudent spending and strategic investments in critical sectors such as health, education, infrastructure, security, and technology.

“The 2024 budget achieved significant deficit reduction, and more importantly, it showed that we are serious—and the markets believed us,” he said.

Bagudu credited the success of the reforms to the coordination and leadership of President Tinubu, who chairs both the Presidential Economic Coordination Council and the Economic Management Team.

He praised the collaborative efforts of the economic team, particularly the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, in maintaining policy coherence and focus.

“This is teamwork. The President is the chief coordinator. He understands the global economic context, and the private sector respects him,” Bagudu said.

He also commended President Tinubu’s respect for legal and institutional frameworks, especially in managing inherited debts and Central Bank financing.

“Mr. President inherited ₦22.7 trillion in Ways and Means financing, but he insisted on respecting the Central Bank’s independence. That discipline is earning us credibility globally,” Bagudu stated.

While acknowledging that some of the reforms may be uncomfortable in the short term, Bagudu likened the economic process to a rigorous but beneficial fitness journey.

“Our economy is like a body going to the gym. It might feel painful now, but the muscles of progress are forming,” he said.

He concluded with a strong endorsement of President Tinubu’s leadership and vision, characterizing the reform drive not just as an economic necessity but a moral duty.

“Mr President is saying, ‘I’m ready to take the pain so our children and grandchildren will inherit a more prosperous Nigeria.’ This isn’t just economic reform—it’s a moral responsibility.”

The interview forms part of a larger documentary project highlighting the Tinubu administration’s achievements as it approaches the midpoint of its first term, with a focus on economic recovery, institutional reforms, and investor engagement.
