President Bola Ahmed Tinubu highlighted the economic gains of his almost two-year administration yesterday.

He spoke in Awka, the Anambra State capital, where he was guest of Governor Chukwuma Soludo at the commencement of a two-day visit.

He identified what he described as economic monsters that held the country by the jugular before he came into office.

He said the country was grappling with:

    • Near-insolvent public finances;

    • Chaotic foreign exchange systems and

    • Unsustainable multiple subsidies.

“But like we tamed the Atlantic Ocean in Lagos, we have also begun to wrestle down these monsters,” he said.

The President, during his tenure as governor of Lagos, created the Atlantic City off the ocean, a policy that terminated the flooding of the beachfront on Victoria Island.

“Though the reforms are tough, they are necessary. We are beginning to see renewed hope, from increased agricultural productivity to a surge in small business activity, especially in tech and manufacturing sectors in which Anambra already excels.

“We must work together. We must be committed. We must lay a solid foundation for an inclusive economy, small businesses are coming back, and Anambra is already excelling.

“We have to invest in our future. I’ve always said it and I will continue to say it, though our tribal tongues may differ, we are one family. We only stay in different rooms.”

He added that the effects of forex reforms, fiscal reengineering and tax restructuring efforts were already attracting investors’ confidence and expanding economic opportunities across the country.

The President spoke in front of dignitaries, including Chief Emeka Anyaoku and traditional rulers, who conferred on him a joint traditional title: Dikesimba Anambra (strong man from another land), after inaugurating some projects undertaken by the three-year-old Soludo administration.

There were also governors, including Sheriff Francis Oborevwori (Delta), whom he described as an “earth mover”, in reference to the uprooting of the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure into the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

On the Dikesimba title conferred on him by royal fathers, led by the chairman of the traditional rulers in the state, Igwe Chidubem Iweka of Obosi, the President described it as historic.

He said: “I feel honoured by the chieftaincy title. It is historic and I will treasure it to the end of my life. Give me a piece of land to build for my retirement. I need a permanent abode and not a temporary home.”

Among the projects inaugurated are: New Government House, Awka Fun City; Ekwueme Boulevard and the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), among others.

Responding to Soludo’s request for the rehabilitation of the Anambra-Kogi-Abuja Road to ease travel burden from nine to two hours, President Tinubu said: “I agree with you while assuring that the government would look into it, including the other requests.”

Inaugurating the Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies in Anambra, the President lauded the legacies of the 92-year-old diplomat.

He hailed Anyaoku for his contributions to good governance, democracy and world peace, describing him as a “great Nigerian and a patriotic man with commitment to values and nation building”.

According to him, Anyaoku should be commended for promoting democracy, good governance and world peace in the course of his service.

He said: “We must invest in education as it is the greatest weapon against poverty. We are doing so, believing we have leaders like Emeka Anyaoku.

“Here is a man who helped tremendously to bring about constitutional democracy, freedom and stability.

“His patriotism is boundless. His commitment to values and nation-building is invaluable. I’m glad he is alive.

“I’m glad my friend, Governor Charles Soludo, his team, and many of you are here to honour him, immortalise him and ensure he remains a fulcrum of our learning and intellectual development and diplomacy.”

The President urged the management of the institution to ensure adequate maintenance of the building and its facilities.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to advancing the education sector, saying that significant resources had consistently been allocated, especially toward tertiary education.

“Let me divert attention to the Governing Council and Management of the university.

“In recent times, we have had cause to intervene in the affairs of this university and a few others, to arrest what could be described as administrative rascalities.

“My government is committing lots of resources to the education sector and shall not allow wrong use of autonomy to derail us.”

    Soludo’s request

The governor appealed to the Federal Government for support to develop the state and the Southeast.

Soludo announced that it had been the tradition of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to support the government at the center as well as the political party.

He, therefore, endorsed President Tinubu for a second term in office, saying that APGA, being the first progressive political party in Nigeria, shared the same progressive ideology with other progressive parties, such as the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Soludo said: “Our support for President Tinubu is rooted in the history on the principles of progressivism and progressive ideology.

“In 2011, the APGA supported the party that owned the government at the centre. This has continued to date, and I wish to announce that it has not changed.

“In the spirit of Awoism and Michael Okpara, we share the same vision of true federalism, which you, Mr. President, fought for at a very high cost. We, as a party, announce that we shall continue to support the party at the centre.

“Your visit to Anambra is historic and consequential. The last state visit by a President was in 2012, ostensibly to commission a brewery and another private enterprise. This visit is not just to commission projects.

“We have over 500km of roads, flyovers/bridges completed and waiting for commissioning; five new general hospitals and world world-class trauma centre completed and waiting for commissioning; smart schools and water projects waiting for commissioning; new markets and bus terminal, etc.

“Previously, we have insisted that the users of our roads and projects should be the ones to commission them—keke and bus drivers, farmers, traders, etc. We are strategic in our choice of projects deserving your attention.

“Today, Mr. President, you have unveiled two mini-cities (the brochure for this event describes them fully), the 8-lane boulevard, the tower of light and the monument of heroes—as symbols of the audacity of our dreams for a new Anambra.

“Like the Americans would say, and as we repeatedly affirm to Ndi Anambra, ‘you ain’t seen nothing yet’!”

The governor’s request for the extension of the Gas and Rail Master Plans to Anambra got President Tinubu’s attention as he promised to look into it.

The President also promised to partner with the Southeast on security and with the state on how to use ecological funds to remedy the devastation of gully erosion across the state.

In his goodwill message, Anyaoku noted: “Governing a pluralist and complex state, such as Nigeria, needs strength and courage. We will continue to pray for you to address the pluralistic status of our country.

“I have confidence that your administration will address the insecurity and economic challenges of our country.”

The elder statesman endorsed Soludo for a second term, insisting that the governor should come back to complete the good work he had started in the state.

NAU Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu expressed gratitude for the President’s visit to the university, praising him for his intervention in what he described as ‘Administrative rascality’ in 2024.

He also expressed gratitude at the decision to establish the world-class institute within the institution.

Ikechebelu said: “This facility is built by contributions from friends of Anyaoku to immortalise and internalise his diplomatic activities.

“We will ensure the efficient operation of the institute to achieve its primary goal of equipping prospective students with globally recognised principles of peace and conflict resolution.”

The Emeka Anyaoku Institute for International Studies and Diplomacy was established to offer degree and certificate programmes in International Relations, Diplomacy, and Peace and Conflict Resolution.

    Ohanaeze’s wish-list

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation – Ohanaeze Ndigbo – acknowledged that the President has done well for the people of the zone, but like Oliver Twist, asked for more federal presence.

President-General, Senator Azuka Mbata, who was represented by the Secretary-General and former Anambra Deputy Governor Chief Emeka Sibeudu, commended the President for the Second Niger Bridge link roads recently awarded, the establishment of the Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) and some other projects being executed in the zone, but requested for more.

Ohanaeze told the President that the Southeast needs a secure environment and expressed the region’s wish for Soludo to continue in office.

The governors at the event were Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Prince Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Alex Otti (Abia), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Babagana Zulum (Borno) and Ebonyi Deputy Governor Mrs. Priscilla Obilla, who stood in for Governor Francis Nwifuru.

Others in attendance included House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Victor Umeh, Works Minister Dave Umahi, former Aviation Minister Mrs. Stella Oduah, former Women Affairs Ministers Mrs. Uju Ohanenye and Mrs. Josephine Anenih, Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, Senator Ben Obi, Dr. Ndubuisi Nwobu, among other dignitaries.

SAN urges Tinubu to order Umahi to follow rule of law in road project disputes

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mohammed Ndarani Mohammed, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to ensure that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, upholds the rule of law in the discharge of his duties, particularly in matters involving land and infrastructure development.

The appeal followed a dispute concerning a property in Lagos reportedly allocated to a consortium of investors by the Lagos State Government after fulfilling all legal requirements.

Mohammed, who serves as the principal partner representing the investors, expressed concern over a recent development where the alignment of a federal road project was allegedly adjusted in a way that affects the investors’ property.

He emphasized the importance of respecting existing legal frameworks, including the Land Use Act and the 1999 Constitution, to preserve public trust and investor confidence in Nigeria.

Delta APC lauds Tinubu over Nigeria’s IMF debt repayment

The Delta APC has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the full repayment of Nigeria’s debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), describing it as a landmark financial victory and a bold symbol of Nigeria’s renewed economic sovereignty.

In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the party commended the Tinubu administration for what it termed “a strategic reset of Nigeria’s economic narrative,” affirming that the President has “restored the dignity of the Nigerian nation and positioned her as a re-emerging economic powerhouse.”

  • Tinubu pledges commitment to promoting independence of judiciary

Tinubu pledges commitment to promoting independence of judiciary

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday said his administration is committed to promoting the independence of the judiciary in the country.

The President said this at the public presentation of a book titled “Honourable Justice Olakayode Ariwoola CJN, GCON: Through the Cases” co-authored by Dr Charles Mekwunye and Ayo Olarewaju.

The book was to honour the former CJN by chronicling his huge contributions to jurisprudence.

The President who was represented by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, appreciated Ariwoola for his contribution to the growth of the nation.

“Through your judgments or decisions, you’ve been able to advance jurisprudence in so many areas of law which include constitutional, contract, electoral, administrative and almost all spheres of our law are touched or were touched by your Lordship.

“Again, I say congratulations and I want to also say that the nation is appreciative of

your contributions. The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognizes that the government stands on the tripod. The executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. It would continue to respect the constitution, both in words and in spirit.

“And as a demonstration of this,

The government will continue to pursue the independence of the judiciary and this has been demonstrated in the presentation of an executive bill at the signing into law of the 300 % upward adjustment in the emolument of judicial officers.

“As a Democrat and a human, the President said that he will continue to help. He will not help in building the house and turn around to bring it down. The administration will continue to encourage the independence of the judiciary and promote the rule of law.

“And I know that through the book, we will all be mentored, challenged and encouraged to always put our all in nation building and I pray that the book will continue to challenge and inspire us to the path of justice,” he said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan stressed the importance of maintaining integrity when given the opportunity of holding public office as he said the image left behind is critical.

The former president, who said the tension in society has grown since from how it was at the beginning of this democratic dispensation in 1999,stressed the need to always do the right thing as otherwise would always lead to crisis.

Jonathan urged the judges to always give their best in the discharge of their duties given the gravity of their responsibility.

He said, “I’m quite pleased that they have documented the actions of our very revered Justice Ariwoola. It will help to contribute to knowledge, especially in a country where judicial issues, especially in the political aspects, are always very shaky. And we do a lot as leaders, but if things are not properly documented, sometimes people don’t know what you really do.

“And I like the topic here. Through the cases.

And I used to tell people that as if by divine providence, God made you to hold a very high position in government. People will look at you when you leave office and probably the angle that you think people assess you will be different. People assess you because of what you must have used that your position to do and this is what everyone wants to show the world and the next generation.

“I always tell people that if you look at adverts generally, the first thing is from the marketing aspect, which is that adverts are to make products so that people will buy. Then you ask, why should the IOCs continue to advertise? Take Shell, for example. They advertise in the most expensive international magazines. Shell sells their oil even before they produce. So they are not looking for somebody to buy. So why should they spend so much money for advertisements?

“Because they want a good image. And that is all the thing that all of us are here for. The image that you leave behind is critical. What you gain temporarily is very ephemeral, but the image that you leave behind, history will judge. Your child and grandchildren will come and raise questions.

“This documentation of the activities of Honorable Justice Ariwoola is a good thing that is being done so that those who read would know his position on especially the controversial cases in Nigeria. I don’t envy the justice in the Supreme Court and Appeal Courts as a politician because we attack you every day for doing one thing or the other.

“As you are coming to this programme, I just asked my former chief of staff, and said looking at the political environment in Nigeria now and at 98, 99. Is the tension more now or at the beginning of this present dispensation? And we’re just wondering whether the tension is even more now.

“It’s more because I think there are few things we still need to do, both the National Assembly and of course the judiciary, to make sure that things are done properly. And if things are not done properly, the country will continue to witness one crisis or the other and will not know what it will lead us to.

“There are things I believe are relatively easy, but when they are not handled the way it’s supposed to be handled, and either delays or handled wrongly, it takes a different dimension. Sometimes people would begin to think about self help. If I cannot get justice in the courts, then why not find a way to help myself?

“I will always plead that those of you who have the privilege of sitting over the affairs of men should always give us their best.”

Chairman of the Planning Committee, Dr Charles Mekwunye, described Ariwoola as one of the greatest jurists of all time, who devoted his life to serve Nigeria as judge of the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court for over 30 years.

He lauded the former CJN for strengthening the independence of the judiciary, promoting the rule of law, restoring the confidence of the Nigerian public in the judiciary.

He used the opportunity to urge the President to the issue of Nigerians detained for years without trial.

He also appeal to the courts to interpret the law of confession as has been reviewed and legislated upon by the legislature.

“However, as we present this book to the public, two things have continued to agitate my mind, and keep me awake at night as far as due process, equality before the law and the rule of law in Nigeria are concerned.

“The first is the plight of our brothers and sisters who are being detained in our prisons a.k.a Correctional Centres across our country for upwards to 15 years, 10 years, or even 7 years without trial. Why should anyone be in prison detained for this long without trial in modern day Nigeria that has just celebrated 25 years of unbroken democracy?

“The true answer is that it is because they are poor, under privileged and helpless Nigerians. In our 11 years work providing pro bono services to some of these Nigerians, I can tell you that – no child or blood relatives of the President, the Vice President, the Senate President and other members of the National Assembly or the Governors or even the Court of Appeal and Supreme Justices is amongst these people who are being detained unconstitutionally and unconscionably without trial for several years.”

He urged the President to sign an Executive Order to ensure those detained for six months or more be charged to court or discharged.

“I therefore call on you to compassionately but immediately issue an Executive Order that all detainees awaiting trial who have been detained for more than 6 months should either be immediately charged to court or be discharged unconditionally and be compensated.

“The Executive Order should include free medical and psychological checks and treatment upon their discharge. And yes, the heads of the law enforcement units or agencies who have caused their detention without trial should be held accountable and should tender a public apology to them.

“The second issue is an appeal to the courts – this time the High Courts – to up their game, and to interpret the law of “confession” as has been reviewed and legislated upon by the legislature and in this case interpreted by the Appellate Courts – the Court of Appeal and in December, 2023 by the Apex Court the Supreme Court of Nigeria. This is another area where the poor and under-privileged who cannot afford good legal representation are also the main victims.

“The police and other law enforcement agencies will arrest helpless Nigerians without any reasonable or probable cause, or even before they start to investigate the alleged crimes and then mercilessly beat out “confessions” from these victims and then charge them to court for trial on the basis of only these alleged ‘confessions’”.

President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Afam Osigwe said the occasion was both solemn and celebratory.

Represented by the General Secretary of the Association, he said it is an occasion on which the Bench and the Bar join hands to salute one of Nigeria’s finest jurists and a moment of institutional gratitude and intellectual reflection.

He said the book does more than chronicle a judicial career, but captures the very essence of jurisprudential wisdom.

He said the book title is not merely literary, but judicial cartography as it “maps the evolution of legal principles across decades and affirms that in the realm of justice, ideas outlive time, and judgments echo through generations.”

“As Chief Justice of Nigeria, my Lord, Justice Ariwoola brought to bear not only his vast knowledge of the law but also an unwavering commitment to judicial independence, discipline, and integrity. And now as Chairman of the Body of Benchers, my Lord continues to exemplify the highest ideals of the legal profession-mentoring, reforming, and inspiring the Bench and Bar alike,” the NBA president said.

Chief Justice of the Federation, Hon Justice Kekere-Ekun, said they joined in rejoicing with him and the Nigerian judiciary for the feat he achieved in his tenure as CJN.

Represented by Mr Garba Lawal, said they look forward to more of such honours to him and the Nigerian judiciary.

In his response, the former CJN and Chairman, Body of Benchers, Justice Ariwoola, said he was committed throughout his time in service.

He said however he was having his best life since he retired.

He appreciated his wife for her support saying without a supportive spouse, no judge can function properly.

He also commended the co-authors saying they did a great job.

“All the 32 years were memorable. Since I left the Supreme Court on the 22nd of August 2024 ii would tell you I have been having the best of time with my family.

“Because throughout the 32 years from 1992 November to 2024, people who are close to me know that I was committed to this job. And that is why I’m appreciating my wife for you people to know, without a good spouse, no judge can function well at all.

“Men and women judicial officers, you should worship your spouse if you want to be successful. Give him whatever he wants, give her whatever she wants. Since I left the office, me and my wife now watch African Magic together,” he said.

Represented at the event were the Senate President, Goodwill Akpabio, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, as well as the representatives of the Akwa Ibom, Delta, Plateau, Enugu and Imo State governments among other top dignitaries.

Why I am supporting Tinubu’s second term, says deputy speaker Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu has said that despite scoring very low votes from the South East, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the region so much.

Kalu, who spoke when he received the members of the City Boy Movement led by its Abia State Coordinator and South East Zonal Leader, Mary Ikoku, in his office, said the President has given the South East so much sense of belonging and fulfilled the over 50-year-old promise of reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

He said the President has continued to prioritize equitable distribution of high profile political offices across the country, hence his decision rally support for the second bid of the President.

He said his support for the President stemmed from his display of statesmanship and the sense of belonging extended to the South East geopolitical zone.

He said that despite scoring low vote from the region in the 2023 elections, the President has continued to prioritize equitable distribution of high profile political offices across the country.

According to him, the Tinubu administration has pursued sincere policies and programmes that will put Nigeria on a good economic pedestal, saying it will not only benefit the present generation but also posterity.

He said the establishment of South East Development Commission (SEDC) by the government showcased Tinubu as a President that does not discriminate against any region, adding that the creation of the Commission which he said eluded the region for over 50 years since the end of the civil war, will help to heal the wounds sustained therefrom.

He welcome the group’s request to work with his Renewed Hope Partners (RHP), a platform initiated to showcase Tinubu’s giant strides across the country, saying the collaboration with the City Boy Movement founded by the President’s son, Seyi Tinubu will be impactful.

He said: “I wholeheartedly accept to be your zonal grand patron. It’s a show of hand of partnership between the Renewed Hope Partners and the City Boy Movement. We are going to work together to ensure that the vote that will come from the South East will be different now than it was before.

“We are going to go around the 5 eastern States. I know the responsibility of being a patron at the zonal level, and I will not shy away from my responsibility. I can assure you the impact will be driven by our synergy when we come together. We will partner both within and outside the South East but our primary target is the South East.

“The President is proud of you and this marriage willl give you a boost. I am committed to this and sincerely so because this is a man we did not give enough votes but has given us a lot.

“Other Presidents came and left. Nobody thought it wise to fulfil the promise of 50 years of reconciliation, reconstruction and reintegration by the Gowon regime. Using the South East Development Commission, the President, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, has fulfilled that promise.

“So, with that platform, we are going to heal the wounds of the Southeast. Many said he was going to sign it, but he did, and very soon, the impact of this government is going to be felt through that platform. That’s why I believe in him.”

The Deputy Speaker also urged the South East to support the President’s reelection bid.

“Igbo should participate and stop sitting outside the room. Splitting our vote has not given us the strength we need at the negotiation table. The only way Igbo will feel included and feel the power of inclusion and the benefits of it is when we include our vote. Let our vote count and then, the region will count much more”, he said.

Zonal Leader of City Boy Movement, Mary Ikoku lauded the legislative legacies of the Deputy Speaker, saying “It is with great pleasure that we gather today to pay tribute to your exceptional leadership and dedication to the progress of our beloved South East region and our country. Your tireless efforts in promoting peace and stability through the Peace in the Southeast project have been truly remarkable, fostering an environment conducive to growth, development, and prosperity.

“Your commitment to the ideals of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and your impressive legislative record, both locally and internationally, have earned you the respect and admiration of our movement.

“Recently, you unveiled the Renewed Hope Partners, a special purpose vehicle to ensure the vision and policies of the President are communicated to the relevant publics and, in turn, cause his re-election based on empirical evidence of his works. We’ve watched you represent our country, and we love the way you love and promote Mr. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the city boy on whose name this organisation was formed.

“We are here to offer you our readiness for partnership with Renewed Hope Partners. We will work collaboratively with RHP to achieve the great vision for 2027. In recognition of your outstanding contributions, we, the South East City Boy movement, are proud to confer upon you the title of South East Patron. This honour is a testament to your leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the development of our region”.

FULL TEXT: Tinubu’s speech at Anambra grand reception

    1. Protocols. Anambra Kwenu! Anambra Kwenu!! Igbo Kwezuenu!!!
    2. About 30 months ago, I stood at this Venue as Candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In less than two years since assumption of office as your president, I am delighted to be back on a state visit and to commission some legacy projects by your state government. I come as a friend to the great people of Anambra and the Southeast. I salute your enterprise, your innovation, and your unwavering commitment to progress. Anambra has long stood as a beacon of commerce, intellect, and cultural strength — a pride not only to the Southeast but to Nigeria as a whole.
    3. My visit today bears bold testament to parts of my speech during my campaign here. I recall vividly telling you then that: “Charles Soludo, your son…is still my friend. I salute his vision. He is a brilliant man. He has the brain. He is a thinker. He knows the way. We will work together inclusively. When I become the president, Soludo will be one of those advisors who will bring prosperity back to you”. From what I have seen and heard, it is evident that a solid foundation is being laid, and Anambra is indeed on the rise. Charles Soludo has been my friend since 2003, and I can also confirm that we are working together for a better Anambra and a better Nigeria.
    4. I have just commissioned two landmark projects—the Solution Fun City and the Government House mini-city as part of the initial steps on the path towards your audacious vision of Anambra as African-Dubai-Taiwan-Silicon Valley (ADTS). Together with the massive infrastructural transformation and human capital development, these are bold statements of vision and what leadership can achieve in such a short time. A few years ago, Dubai was largely a desert. Today, it is a global hub, because one man dared to dream. I remember when Soludo wanted to consolidate the Nigerian banks, and many said it was impossible. It was done and Nigeria became better for it. I also recall when we dared to tame the Atlantic Ocean, and many naysayers doubted it. But we made it happen. Anambra has huge potential and with Soludo, we can all work together to fast-track the vision.
    5. Let me commend the Government of Anambra State for its proactive efforts in improving security in the state. I wish to assure you that the Federal Government will continue to partner with the State and the Southeast to secure our people and their future.
    6. I have taken serious note of the various challenges facing the state and your request for assistance and partnership: (MR PRESIDENT MAY, AT HIS DISCRETION RESPOND TO THE UNDERLISTED SPECIFIC REQUESTS…)
    • Anambra as the gully erosion capital of the world, with one-third of the land mass under serious threat. In addition, about 8 local governments are constantly under the threat of annual flooding. Request for state of emergency on erosion threatening to submerge many communities…
    • Anambra and southeast have huge gas deposits but largely bypassed by the national gas masterplan. Urgent attention to enable us to unlock the potential for gas powered power plants
    • Abandoned federal road project that links Anambra through Kogi – this can become the fastest gateway between Abuja and Anambra/Southeast/South South
    • Making Onitsha River port (commissioned in 1982 by the Shagari Administration) to be operational. Dredging the Niger to allow badges from Onne port into the river port is a very low hanging fruit— and will almost be a revolution for our people. Only Asiwaju can break this 43-year-old jinx.
    • Anambra completely bypassed by the Rail masterplan???
    • Urgent attention to many federal roads abandoned in Anambra for
    • several years. Currently Anambra has spent about N150 billion on federal roads over the past three years…

We will continue to partner with your state to deliver shared prosperity to Ndi Anambra and all Nigerians.

    1. As your president, it gives me great pleasure to assure you all that the state of the nation is strong and getting stronger by the day under our Renewed Hope Agenda. We met a near insolvent public finance, decades-old monster of unsustainable multiple subsidies, chaotic and debilitating forex regime, etc. Like we tamed the Atlantic in Lagos, many of these monsters have been wrestled down: petroleum and forex subsidies have been tamed; macroeconomic stability has returned within predictable bounds; tax reforms are on the way; etc. These reforms are difficult, yes, but inevitable. Everyone had long recognized their imperatives. Courage and our collective action were required to confront them so as to lay a strong foundation for a more stable, prosperous and inclusive economy. Already, we are seeing renewed investor confidence, expanding opportunities, and targeted support for small businesses, especially in the tech and manufacturing sectors where Anambra is already excelling. Agriculture is receiving massive attention, and the results are beginning to show.
    2. We have renegotiated and passed into law a new minimum wage as part of our effort to cushion the effect of these reforms on the working class. I am particularly happy that the Government of Anambra State has fully implemented the new minimum wage and I understand that you are paying above the National minimum.
    3. We are working to build critical infrastructure — roads, rail, and power — and ensure that every corner of Nigeria, including Anambra, feels the impact of governance that works. The Presidential Power Initiative and the ongoing digital economy drive will open more doors for the resourceful people of this State.
      **Other reforms worth highlighting *****
    4. We continue to plead with Nigerians for their patience and understanding. We call on all patriots and progressives to rise up and continue to work hard everyday for the greatness of our dear country. We have no other country but Nigeria. We must make it great as the pride of the black race.
    5. Before I conclude, let me thank the government and the great people of Anambra State for your warm hospitality. In particular, I feel deeply honoured by the conferment of a Chieftaincy title by all the traditional rulers of Anambra State on behalf of the State. In 2005, the traditional ruler of Awka, HRH Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II) conferred on me the title of OMENIFE AWKA. To now have ALL the traditional rulers of Anambra conferring another title on me today is not only historic but one which I will greatly treasure for the rest of my life. Thank you to the traditional rulers. Thank you, Ndi Anambra. A lot of my friends are from Anambra state, and I have seen many of them today. Going forward, we are not just friends: I am now a bona fide son of the soil— one of you, your own son! Maybe my friend and your governor, Charles Soludo, should find me a plot of land for my retirement home, after service.

It is well with Anambra State!

    It is well with Nigeria!!

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Tinubu launches national action plan on violence against children

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for the strict enforcement of Nigeria’s child protection laws as he launched the National Action Plan on Ending Violence Against Children, signalling a new era of coordinated national response to the plight of vulnerable children.

Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the inaugural regional meeting of Africa Pathfinder Countries under the Global Alliance on Ending Violence Against Children, held at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu also announced a raft of initiatives designed to strengthen institutional frameworks and ensure accountability in child protection efforts.

Among the measures unveiled are plans to establish a dedicated Child Protection and Development Agency, a Universal Child Grant aimed at reducing household poverty, and the creation of a National Child Protection Database and Child Well-being Index to track progress and improve service delivery.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Tinubu declared his administration’s commitment to “establishing a dedicated Child Protection and Development Agency to ensure coherent coordination of all issues relating to the Nigerian child.”

The president noted that while each day comes with a reminder of the dreams of Nigerian children, the conditions into which they are born, and whether these conditions protect or betray them, are also critical issues to ponder.

He said, “Our legal frameworks reflect our conviction. From the Child Rights Act to the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, Nigeria has laid down the statutory foundation for the protection of children. But legislation alone does not shield the vulnerable—it is the will behind those laws, and the systems that enforce them, that make the difference.

“That is why our national strategy also embraces prevention and early intervention. We are strengthening families and communities through programmes that promote positive parenting, challenge harmful social norms, and provide targeted support to vulnerable households.”

President Tinubu assured that relevant government institutions, including the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, are armed with the required training and resources to spearhead the protection of the Nigerian child across all levels of government, even as he maintained that it is a crusade for which sincerity and honesty are required.

“But we must be honest with ourselves. We cannot protect the child by merely reciting the anthems of their struggles or romanticising their vulnerability.

“The real hope lies in action—concrete, deliberate action. Our commitment must run deep, reaching into the very architecture of our education and health systems. This is the soul of our human capital development strategy,” he stated.

To ensure stiff enforcement of child protection laws in Nigeria, President Tinubu said his administration is “strengthening existing institutions and laws, and launching national campaigns to promote awareness and drive behavioural change.”

The President underlined the importance of the first regional meeting of Africa’s Pathfinder Countries under the Global Alliance on Ending Violence Against Children, pointing out that “it breathes new life into the bold declarations made at the First Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children held in Bogotá.”

Earlier, the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence Against Children, Dr Najat Maalla M’jid, urged African leaders to move beyond commitments and implement concrete actions to protect children from violence and exploitation.

Dr M’jid also charged delegates to the meeting and other participants to focus on peer learning, effective strategy sharing, and collective actions in addressing common obstacles to ensure child protection efforts are sustainable in Africa.

On her part, Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Hon Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, highlighted the country’s commitment and the progress made since the Ministerial Conference in Bogotá, Colombia, in November 2024, noting that the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu is strengthening legal frameworks, scaling up the Safe Schools Programme, expanding parenting interventions, and increasing budgetary allocations to child protection systems.

“Through our renewed national child policy framework now under review, and our adopted National Strategy and Costed Action Plan to End Child Marriage in Nigeria, we are laying the foundation for more accountable, inclusive, and data-driven action,” she said.

In separate remarks, the heads of delegation to the regional meeting from Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Burkina Faso, stated the recommitment of their various countries to the global alliance to ending violence against children as declared in Bogota in November 2024.

They presented progress reports from their respective countries, commended the leadership provided by Nigeria and urged all stakeholders to be intentional about ending violence against children and not to pay lip-service to the programmes and policies designed to actualise the objectives.

Also present at the meeting were the wife of the Deputy Senate President, Hajiya Laila Jibrin Barau; Minister of Women, Family and Children from Cote d’Ivoire, Hon Nasseneba Toure; Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare from Zimbabwe, Edgar Moyo; Minister of Gender and Children Affairs from Sierra Leone, Hon Isata; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Nigeria, Dr Maryam Keshinro, and representatives of development partners and heads of agencies, among others.
