  • Ode to People’s President

    Ode to People’s President

    By Opeyemi Bamidele, CON

Today, I celebrate a timeless doyen of democracy and an astute mentor of many leaders, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. By global standards, Asiwaju is truly a man of the people and the visionary of our times, who devoted his life to pursuing the greatest goods to the greatest number of people. This has been the core of his heart and life from when he was a boardroom guru in the 1980s to when he joined partisan politics in the 1990s.

Born on March 29, 1952, Asiwaju’s foray into politics in 1991 was never a mistake, though it came with a huge sacrifice that cost dearly. As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I celebrate how Asiwaju firmly stood with the people rather than dining with the military oligarchy that annulled the outcome of the June 12, 1993 presidential election ostensibly won by Chief M.K.O Abiola (now of blessed memory), an annulment that set our fatherland back to the pre-colonial era.

I also celebrate how Asiwaju teamed up with the progressives to establish the National Democratic Coalition, a movement of likeminds and progressives that fiercely challenged the regime of the late tyrant, General Sani Abacha; mobilised support for the restoration of democracy to our fatherland and campaigned for the recognition of Chief M.K.O Abiola as the winner of the June 12 presidential election. And this conviction and pursuit eventually earned him exile from the land of his birth. Yet, he was undaunted in his quest to see his fatherland liberated from the era of locusts that pitched us against the comity of nations.

I celebrate how Asiwaju returned to Nigeria in 1998 when the darkest era of the late tyrant finally folded into the abyss of extinction after fighting doggedly on the side of the people. The end of the dark era culminated in his election as the third civilian governor of Lagos State in January 1999. Though faced with diverse heinous challenges at the inception, Asiwaju came out strong and victorious, setting Lagos on the path of irreversible progress, reforming the coastal state to a globally competitive smart city and turning it to a constant destination of strategic investment. And the world can no more look away from Nigeria just because of the pro-people reforms he carried out in Lagos.

Asiwaju’s quest for the greatest goods for the greatest number of people pushed him to national politics, the kind of venture that consumed the nationalists and patriots who lived before him. At different times, he challenged the traditional forces that held our fatherland down. He first fought for the soul of our fatherland on the platform of the defunct Action Congress, and it did not entirely produce an enviable outcome. He later switched to the Action Congress of Nigeria, and banished the regressive elements from the six states of the South-west. Full of hope, Asiwaju stressed forth his hands across Benue and Niger, and together, they rescued Nigeria from the hands of the regressives.

At 72, as the President of Nigeria, Asiwaju has brought rare conviction and passion to the business of public governance, courageously daring the forces of regression and tirelessly  pursuing the interests of over 227 million regardless of their faith, ideology and race. The task is truly daunting, but the victory is undoubted. Only within 10 months of Asiwaju’s ascendancy to the presidency, we have started witnessing the dawning of economic restoration and the ray of political renaissance under his watch.

As I nostalgically reflect on the journey so far, I remember his labour and toiling for our fatherland, even when most misunderstood. I remember his undying passion to lead the path to a greater nation, even when the future looks so bleak and always unsure. I remember his utter commitment to a movement of patriots and progressives eternally sworn to rescue our fatherland from the claws of the ageless vultures and the blood-thirst beaks of mindless hawks that always seek to feast on the flesh of Nigeria. Despite their ferocity, he eventually subdued the enemies of our souls, even right in the midst of inferno they set ablaze for us all.

That is the reality in our fatherland today. Asiwaju is at the forefront of that reality. And we are all witnesses to this history, even from its making to its maturation. Now, as he graciously turns 72 on this auspicious day, I cannot, but earnestly pray God grants him longer life and inner strength to steadily paddle the ship of our nation to the coast of endless ecstasy.

Heartiest 72nd Birthday, my leader and mentor.

  • Tinubu: Leadership in tough times

    Tinubu: Leadership in tough times

President Bola Tinubu is 72 years old today. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU examines how he is tackling the challenges of governance at this critical time, amid mounting public expectation

He is not rolling out the drums. To the discerning, there is much to be celebrated, judging by the decisive steps he has taken in the last 10 months and what he has achieved in less than a year.

But, President Bola Tinubu is opting for quietness as dictated by public mood. As he turns 72 today, he, like the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, is thinking about the problem of the country; its dimensions, magnitude, etiology, and strategies for problem solving.

Critics are not looking at what has changed for the better. They are only focusing on what remains to be achieved. There are pains to be endured, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

If the President had not assumed political control, the country could have been worse for it. Yet, for a political elite and unpatriotic confederates that have adjusted to governance as tea party and business as usual, the paradigm shift is confounding, unexpected and obstructive to wealth accumulation and appropriation of privileges to the detriment of the masses.

To them, the reforms of the Federal Government across the vital sectors are burdensome. Indeed, the measures hinder the habitual pillage of the treasury and the promotion of institutionalised corruption. The result is an elite conspiracy against a government that is working for the people and laying a new foundation for a prosperous future.

Ironically, the masses, who are in the majority and targets of the reformation process, are impatient, as they join the hardship chorus, many of them having been swayed by the antics of serial propagandists, saboteurs and barons trying to resist correction. The unscrupulous elements are fighting back, wiping sentiments and trying to intimidate a legitimate authority. It is a lost battle against an experienced leader, whose antecedents imply, in part, a resistance to intimidation and timidity.

Tinubu’s life has been a lesson in courage, perseverance, foresight, focus, and loyalty to cherished progressive values and principles. He has been a great risk taker, a bridge builder, a thinker, a hunter for talents, a man bubbling with national outlook, and a total Nigerian.

He has made a lasting impression in politics, and those aspiring to national leadership should be ready to pass through the same furnace. Even as president, Tinubu is still the most vilified politician in the land, with recruited social media ruffians waging the most virulent attack on his personality, spreading rumours and peddling falsehood, twisting facts and evading reality.

Feeble-minded opposition leaders, intermittently waking up from their slumbers, sustain the constant abuse by financially induced miscreants, with an intent to weaken, in their imagination, the administration ahead of the next election. They have no business with governance other than to plan for future elections that may still not be determined in their favour by the electorate who are acquiring the skill to vote wisely.

They have allies in garrulous labour leaders flouting the rules of union engagement at will, pandering to ethnic appeal and taking a partisan position that has confused the public about their roles and disguised intentions in the polity.

The occasional onslaught by the remnants of terrorists is amplified to intimidate, to make it appear that a gross failure is being recorded in the arduous task of securing Nigeria. Some regional leaders and ethnic mouthpieces cry wolf, forgetting that they have also abandoned the role of building support for the anti-insurgent onslaught in their region.

Protests are sponsored against the government. But, lacking substance, they crumble from the onset, the plan having been erected on a porous foundation.

Tinubu administration is on course. Not all the challenges have been fully resolved. But, the timely surgical or rescue operation is yielding fruits. There is an assurance that the effective implementation of the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ will eventually reposition Nigeria for excellence.

Tinubu’s government will be assessed by objective analysts, based on two core parameters: economy, and security. The scope is huge. But, there are other criteria: has the president lived up to expectations as a democrat? Has he been able to foster integration through inclusion? Does he have the potential to become the unifying factor in a highly heterogeneous nation-state?

Answers to these puzzles will point to the profile and stature of Asiwaju Tinubu, not only as a legitimate reformist leader but also as a statesman and father of the nation in whom much confidence is reposed.

     Democracy:

Tinubu’s presidency is not a product of a rainbow coalition of military Generals in blissful retirement itching to teleguide those in power. There is a clean break from the past  His emergence as the president of Nigeria, particularly his vote spread, attested to his national acceptability and credibility. Being a democrat, he has always demonstrated sensitivity and taken critical decisions, following widespread, constant consultations with stakeholders, including the parliament, the ruling and opposition parties, the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), and civil society organisations. The National Leader is accessible. There is no room for dictatorship or executive recklessness at the centre.

Unlike the preceding administrations, a cordial relationship exists between the Executive and the Legislature. It is characterised by mutual respect and cooperation in an atmosphere of separation of powers. There is no friction because both organs see themselves as partners in progress in the defense of national interest.

President Tinubu has never seen himself as an oppressive emperor in Aso Villa issuing commands to governors with threats. Rather, as a federalist, he believes the sub-nationals are coordinated with the central authority without impairing their constitutional autonomy. Also, there is equal treatment of the states, whether the governors belong to the ruling or opposition parties.

The president has not interfered in any off-season elections. There is no personalisation of power and demonstration of federal might. He has stopped the misuse of police and military as tools of intimidation, oppression and repression during polls. This has been attested to by Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang and his Bayelsa counterpart, Douye Diri, who have hailed his unusual neutrality and democratic maturity.

    National integration and inclusion:

President Tinubu is a believer in unity in diversity, which his administration has come to reinforce. Appointments into the federal cabinet have been dictated, not only by merit and competence but also by federal character, equity and national interest. A sense of belonging is accorded to the diverse ethnic groups, whose identities are protected and yearnings, based on their peculiarities, are met. Also, the distribution of developmental projects is not lopsided. Suspicion and mistrust that characterised federal/state relations in the past are removed and aptly replaced by trust and confidence building.

The president is a listening leader; very accessible and ready to admit mistakes and eager to swiftly correct unintentional errors. On several occasions, he has retraced his steps, following public outcry. But, he has also been firm, resolute and determined whenever he is convinced about a course of action.

A feature of the administration is gender balance and youth inclusion. This has been reflected in nearly all the appointments made so far; in the cabinet, boards and parastatals.

    Restructuring:

Gradually, Nigeria is dropping the relic of the unitary system masquerading as federalism. The foundation built by the immediate past administration is being sustained in this regard. States and groups of states or regions now have opportunities to reorder their priorities in this period of decentralisation of rail transportation. Already, Abia State under the leadership of visionary Governor Alex Otti is finding a solution to the electricity crisis, making investors gravitate towards the Southeast state. The credit in Abia should also be shared by the pioneering initiative of Prof. Bert Nnaji.

That power can now be on the Concurrent List is good news. In the past, the Eron/public-private initiative was frustrated in Lagos when Tinubu was governor. Being a corrective regime, President Tinubu has now signed the Electricity Act Amendment Bill 2024 into law.

Recently, President Tinubu also rallied the governors to consider state police as a panacea to the lingering insecurity. It is expected that the ongoing constitution review would give operative content to the push for the devolution of power.

    Security:

The anti-terror war has been reinvigorated. Terrorists, bandits and kidnappers are losing their hold, making them take on soft targets, including vulnerable school pupils. The Federal Government has maintained that ransom will not be paid and there will be no hiding place for kidnappers.

Indeed, there is increased budgetary allocation to security. The security architecture has been reformed and the government has procured advanced weaponry for the Armed Forces. It has also escalated intelligence-based security management to higher levels. Kinetic engagements with bandits and insurgence have been sustained.

For the war to be won, the cooperation of the regional political and religious leaders is required. The fact that some people have volunteered to negotiate with the bandits, insurgents and kidnappers is an indication that their identities are known. The motivation for banditry should be uncovered and understood. Unless the causes are tackled from their roots, the war may still not quickly end.

     Economy:

The economy was on crutches when the President took over. It was possible that the president would have been taken aback after opening the files, particularly the financial books. The past belongs to history. The present is redeemable. The future can be safeguarded with meticulous planning.

The first courageous step was the removal of the oil subsidy. It was not popular with the few beneficiaries, who have been fighting back. Neither was the logic understood by the common people, who are expected to benefit from the decision.

The removal led to an increase in revenue, which is being distributed to states and development for developmental purposes. The onus is on governors and council chairmen to complement the efforts of the Federal Government to mitigate the effects of removal.

This is a very challenging time. But, as explained by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,  Senator  George Akume, bold economic reforms undertaken by the administration, resulting in short-term hardships, are borne out of a deep-seated commitment to Nigeria’s long-term prosperity and stability.

President Tinubu inherited a daunting economic landscape, necessitating decisive action to alter the nation’s downward trajectory. With unwavering dedication, the government is striving towards a prosperous, healthy, and globally competitive Nigeria.

The agricultural initiatives are encouraging. There is evidence of an increase in the supply of subsidized fertilizer, supply of farm inputs such as seedlings and implements, expansion of investment in agricultural irrigation to increase food production, establishment of Skills Acquisition Centres by NASENI and strengthening of Small and Medium Scale E Development Fund and the Bank of Industry.

It is noteworthy that the administration has declared a state of emergency on food scarcity and set up interventions on food security, food pricing, and sustainability. The activities of saboteurs hoarding palliatives, smugglers of food, and other commodities are also being checkmated.

State governments have to do more as the farmland belongs to states. Rural roads leading to farms are required for easy transportation of farm produce to towns and cities.

No doubt, the government is wooing domestic and foreign investors. But their confidence should be boosted by improved home conditions. Inflation is still high and interest rates on loans constitute a disincentive to borrowing. Yet, only increased productive activities can bolster the economy.

The manufacturing sector is still on its knees. It is the key to employment, not the restrictive job offers by government agencies. If the government can effectively resolve the electricity challenge and the refineries are back on their feet, all will be well.

    Other outstanding matters:

Students look forward to the implementation of the student loan scheme. For students, this is more than inclusion. It is the baseline for the miniature review of cost sharing in tertiary institutions. The bill has been passed by both chambers of the National Assembly. The government should expedite action.

Oustanding labour issues proposed by genuine labour leaders should be addressed. The resort to strike or threat of strike is becoming monotonous. Labour should also demonstrate maturity, responsibility, patriotism, and understanding when it is required.

President Tinubu should continue to fight corruption with vigour. His style of preventing graft is commendable. Under the administration, indiscipline is not condoned. Thus, the President received commendation when the Humanitarian Minister Dr. Betta Edu was suspended for an alleged infraction. The report by the committee set up to investigate her has been submitted.

It is gratifying that other ministers are being assessed by Hadiza Bala Usman, Special Adviser on Policy and Monitoring. This will not only keep the members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in check but also motivate them to perform to expectation.

Time is not waiting for anyone. In May, the administration will be one year in office. It means that the President only has two years of active work before the commencement of the next electioneering. Therefore, speed is required.

Citizens should cooperate with the government in its bid to ensure a new life of life.

    Party management:

As the leader of the ruling party, President Tinubu should keep his house, the APC, in order. That is why the new reconciliatory move in the party is a step in the right direction.

    • Eminent Nigerians celebrate President at 72
    • It’s low-key celebration

Former President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday led other leaders in extolling the virtues of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who clocks 72 today.

Buhari, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House  Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos State), Sim Fubara (Rivers) and Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and other party leaders praised the president for lifting the country to enviable heights.

The 72nd birthday is a low key celebration. President Tinubu, who had thanked his admirers and other Nigerians, implored them not to make it a fanfare.

For almost two decades, well-wishers have been organising colloquiums every year to mark his birthday.

Two years ago, the President cancelled the colloquium at the Lagos venue, in respect for victims of the Kaduna train attack.

Tinubu told the guests who were already seated to return home and pray for the safe release of some passengers, who were abducted by the attackers.

Last week, the president explained his decision to forego an elaborate celebration in a message posted on his  X handle by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to him, the ceremony will not align with the current mood in the country.

Onanuga said: “Besides, he didn’t want government agencies to use public fund to place congratulatory adverts for him.

“He (Tinubu) restated that he would rather want well-wishers to give the money to orphanages or old people’s homes.”

Tinubu resolving Nigeria’s problems, says Buhari

Buhari, who handed over to Tinubu last year, “wished him a long and healthy life to benefit the nation from his excellent leadership.”

In a statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, the former President lauded President Tinubu for what he called the sustained efforts he has made to steer the nation away from its many problems.

Buhari added: “My family and I pray to God that you remain healthy and happy and continue to work for the betterment of the country. Happy birthday to you”.

Abbas hails ‘grand master of progressive politics’

House Speaker Abbas described Tinubu as the grand master of progressive politics, who has dedicated his life to the service of the country and humanity.

He said the president has refined and redefined politics and governance in Nigeria, adding that his name would occupy a vantage position in history.

Abbas predicted that Tinubu administration will be rated as one of the best in the country.

He said: “I wish His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a happy birthday. While it is his desire, as a passionate leader, that his birthday celebrations should be low-key, it is also an attestation to his selfless leadership style, which we are all emulating.

“Nevertheless, we can’t but express our admiration for a man who is willing and on the verge of transforming the socio-political and economic conditions of our country.

“It is our prayer that the Almighty Allah continues to strengthen him, grant him the grace and the wisdom to navigate our dear country out of the current turbulence,”  Abbas said.

The Speaker urged Nigerians to pray for the president and his administration, as well as give him that maximum support so that his “Renewed Hope Agenda” would achieve its objectives.

Kalu: he is a pragmatic leader

Deputy House Speaker Benjamin Kalu  applauded the President for his pragmatic moves, saying that they are gradually helping the economy to rebound.

In a statement by his Chief Presss Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, he saluted the ‘president’s resilience, courage and tact’.

The Deputy Speaker expressed optimism of a virile economy and a future that will raise the living standard of Nigerians and assured the President of the necessary legislative interventions to achieve the set objectives.

He said: “As a former governor of Lagos State, you showed leadership and capacity. Now that the people of Nigeria have collectively entrusted in your care the Presidency and the fortunes of the country, your vision for a united country and a virile economy is being achieved.

“I applaud your courage, resilience, tact, determination and the pragmatic steps you are taking in the Renewed Hope Agenda to not only revive the economy but to make it healthier than you met it.

“I pray to God for an increase in strength, good health, and wisdom to continue working assiduously to change the narrative and move our dear country to the next level of positive results. Rest assured of my legislative support and interventions.”

    A visionary leader, says Barau

Deputy Senate  President  Barau Jibrin described Tinubu as a visionary leader, urging Nigerians to support him.

Jubrin, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, described him as an  embodiment of democratic ideals, who fought for the attainment and entrenchment of democracy.

He said: “No doubt, your democratic temperament and sagacity are greatly facilitating the achievement of the Renewed Hope Agenda – in synergy with the National Assembly – restoring hope and taking our dear nation out of the security and economic challenges besetting it.”

The Deputy Senate President urged Nigerians to pray for the country and offer their full support to Tinubu as he resets Nigeria.

Bamidele: He is a man of the people

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele paid tribute to his leader, describing him as a visionary and man of the people.

In a his “Ode to the President,” Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central District, said the president has devoted his life to pursuing the greatest goods to the greatest number of people.

He said “this has been the core of his heart and life from when he was a boardroom guru in the 1980s to when he joined partisan politics in the 1990s.”

Bamidele said: At 72, as the President of Nigeria, Asiwaju has brought rare conviction and passion to the business of public governance, courageously daring the forces of regression and tirelessly  pursuing the interest of over 227 million regardless of their faith, ideology and race.

“The task is truly daunting, but the victory is undoubted. Only within 10 months of Asiwaju’s ascendancy to the presidency, we have started witnessing the dawn of economic restoration and political renaissance under his watch.

“I remember his utter commitment to a movement of patriots and progressives eternally sworn to rescue our fatherland from the claws of the ageless vultures and the rolling eyes of mindless hawks that never wanted Nigeria free. ‘Nigeria on path to sustainable growth”

The Chairman of Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions and Southern Senators’ Forum, Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, saluted the President for his accomplishments as a frontline Africa’s political leader, particularly his bold policy decisions that are geared towards returning Nigeria to a path of economic growth and sustainable development.

In a statement, he said:I salute the courage of our dear President in providing required leadership at this critical junction of our nation’s history. Only visionary leaders who are concerned about bequeathing enduring legacies of sustainable socio-economic development, will embark on landmark policy reforms that might cause some discomforts but will ensure a better tomorrow.

“I implore all Nigerians to show understanding with our President as he strives to restore our dear nation on the path of growth. President Tinubu is dealing with the wrong policy decisions of previous administrations that triggered the current economic crisis and hardship.

“As we collectively support the mission to rebuild Nigeria under President Tinubu as espoused in the Renewed Hope agenda,  I am confident that the hardship and litany of challenges confronting our nation will be addressed. We should all be involved in building our nation together.”

    Sanwo-Olu:Tinubu has provided honest leadership

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said Tinubu has provided honest leadership, adding that he is a courageous, audacious and passionate leader, who is committed to the progress, growth, and development of Nigeria.

Alluding to his contributions to national development,  he said since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, last year, he  has demonstrated unparalleled patriotism, integrity, honesty, and courage in steering the ship of state in the right direction.

Sanwo-Olu, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said President Tinubu has provided honest and transparent leadership in Nigeria by taking bold decisions to address challenges militating against the prosperity of Nigeria and Nigerians.

He described the President as a visionary and master strategist whose democratic credentials are scholarly materials for study in political economy.

He said: “President Tinubu has sacrificed the greater part of his life in the service of our dear state and Nigeria. He contributed to the enthronement of democracy and good governance, serving first as a Senator in the aborted Third Republic and later as a pro-democracy activist, working tirelessly as a member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) to struggle for the de-annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

“President Tinubu’s financial wizardry and economic intellect, which he put to good use as the Governor of Lagos State, have taken our dear state to a greater height. Today, Lagos is the pride of Nigeria, occupying an enviable position as the fifth largest economy in Africa.

“President Tinubu has made positive impacts in the country through the Renewed Hope agenda of his administration. His unblemished service and track record of impressive achievements in public office have made him a role model for many Nigerians.”

    Salis salutes Tinubu at 72

As  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marks his 72nd birthday anniversary today, a United States  based lawyer, High Chief Owolabi Salis, has enjoined him to harness the crucial importance of the momentous occasion as an inspirational motivation at finding a solution to the problems facing the country.

In his Goodwill message to the President,Salis,  a Lagos State governorship contestant in 2019,on  the Alliance for Democracy (AD) platform and the Spiritual Leader, The Soul Maker Ministry World Wide, remarked:” The Almighty Creator above, has been so kind enough to you, it therefore behooves on you to harness this rare Divine favour from above and the outpour of goodwill being showered upon you today, as a motivating inspiration to brace  more than ever before,  at finding credible and effective solutions to the problems besetting the nation, particularly the poor.

“ Noting that this particular edition of President Tinubu’s birthday commands special importance, coming at a critical conjuncture with the Easter Good Friday popularly celebrated across the world by the general mass of Christian brethren, and the concurrently on-going Ramadan season, the Ikorodu-born lawyer-politician stressed that” the advice was crucial and necessary because in it will you not only enshrine yourself in the Hall of Fame, but also claim a meaningful sense of fulfillment of destiny.”

The Spiritual Leader, popularly known among the less privileged as Oba Mekunu in Lagos and NewYork  (the king of the poor) also seized the opportunity to enjoin the generality of Nigerians to observe a sober moment of critical self- reflection by asking themselves cogent questions as to why their diverse religious confessions has never for once impacted positively on national growth and progress.

According to him, Africans and Nigerians in particular, rank among the most religious people in the world, compared with the Europeans who are neither so religious nor ardent church or mosque goers, yet, things work,in their own climes, while on the contrary, virtually nothing works in Nigeria and most part of Africa.”

“Terrible malfeasance like kidnapping, rape, terrorism, ritual killings, high wire fraud and corruption had perennialy become the order of the day”.

“Imagine for instance,a system in which we find it so difficult to conduct a free and fair violence-free election, and where our leaders and holders of top public offices are suffused with the pathological propensity to amass the commonwealth of the citizens into their private vaults, yet almost all our ruling elites and top public office holders are either christians or Muslims unlike the European and American scenario of largely non religious people, where sanity prevails”.

“This means that something is either wrong with us or the religion we profess, but I wish to contend that something is more wrong with us than our religion, because no religion preaches wickedness, selfishness,Savage cruelty, corruption, bloodshed and violence”.

“The fundamental problem with us therefore,is that we are sheer bunch of ungodly lots. It is one thing to be religious, yet it is another thing to be godly”.

“You are godly if you do things the way it is supposed to be done, and ungodly if you do things the ways they are not supposed to be done, whether or not you are religious.

“Things work in the developed polities of Europe and America because their leaders do the right things most of the times and the prevailing systems in their climes expresses a credible measure of sanity despite the fact that they are not fanatically religious, unlike in Africa and Nigeria in particular where the reverse is the case despite their phenomenal wavelength of religiosity”,Salis contended.

“It is against this background therefore, that I beseech our ruling elite, religious leaders, top public office holders and indeed people at various dimension of leadership to utilize the opportunity offered in this crucial festive season, for sober self-reflection aimed at a re-discovery of where we got it wrong, and therefore seek necessary corrective recipe in our variegated area of lapses as a nation and individually and harness them in alignment with national growth and progress”, said Salis.

President Tinubu at 72: Leadership in challenging times

    • By TUNDE RAHMAN

Today is President Bola Tinubu’s 72nd birthday. Instead of rolling out the drums to celebrate the day, the President directed there should be no celebration of any kind, including placing newspaper, radio or television advertorials in his honour. He urged anyone wishing to do such for him to donate the money to charity organisations. The decision was taken in deference to the present challenging times. It is a mark of good leadership for a leader worthy of that name to have compassion for the people, identify with them and demonstrate he shares in their pain. Showing empathy for the people and the emotional intelligence of identifying with the weak and vulnerable are in President Tinubu’s DNA.  This character trait has become a remarkable feature of his birthdays over time.

In March 2020, on the cusp of his 68th birthday, he cancelled his birthday colloquium over the outbreak of coronavirus, explaining that the decision was important amid the overriding public concern over the pandemic.

What happened in respect of his 70th birthday on March 29, 2022 was even more touching. He called off an impressive birthday colloquium, right in the middle of the event at Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos with all the dignitaries in attendance, to honour victims of Abuja-Kaduna train attack. And last year, even after he had convincingly won the February 25, 2023 election, President Tinubu did not celebrate his birthday, saying he would devote the moment for reflection on the huge task ahead.

This year’s birthday is the first by President Tinubu on the saddle. His administration is in its 10th month. This period, therefore, offers a veritable opportunity to interrogate his personae, character and administration thus far. There is little doubt that the time we are in is a challenging one indeed.

On assumption of office, the President was greeted by a dire economic situation; the economy almost prostrate. The bold reforms the President instituted, notably the removal of the ruinous fuel subsidy and the unification of the multiple, even dubious foreign exchange rates, though bold and necessary decisions applauded by economic experts, did not immediately produce salutary outcomes with a sudden rise in foreign exchange rates, and the consequential serious impact on other sectors. The cost of petroleum products particularly Premium Motor Spirit and diesel went up with its attendant effects on transport fares. Prices of goods and services particularly staple food items also skyrocketed including prices of other items not dependent on foreign exchange. Inflation rose, hitting 31.70% in February from 29.90% recorded in January 2024, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

However, it’s no longer a depressing story. A combination of courage and determination to change the tide on the part of the President, the employment of the right calibre of economic managers who deployed the right fiscal and monetary policies and perhaps a dose of good fortune helped to gradually change the downward economic curve. As President Tinubu would now say, the headwinds are already giving way and there is light at the end of the tunnel. This heartwarming development is evident enough, but I will soon return to elaborate on the issue.

It is important and relevant to point out that President Tinubu is no stranger to this kind of trajectory in his chequered political career. As Governor of Lagos State (1999-2007), his administration was off to a bumpy start with security issues rearing their ugly heads, roads littered with potholes and heaps of refuse taking over the Lagos landscape, amid poor revenue. There was also the protracted crisis between his administration that inherited a practically insolvent economy and the trade unions as a result of the initial inability to pay the then new National Minimum wage of N7,500. The Tinubu administration confronted all of that and many more crises headlong, successfully altered the situation and left behind important milestones at the end of his tenure.

Writing in his insightful column “Illuminations” on March 16, Segun Ayobolu, surmised that it would appear that President Tinubu thrives more when confronted with crises that compel him to draw on his inner psychological, spiritual and strategic political resources to navigate treacherous terrain and come out triumphantly again and again. “For instance at the end, in 2007, of his eight-year tenure as governor in Lagos State, the mega city had evolved into a bastion of security of lives and property, rapid infrastructural transformation, and provision of social services especially to the vulnerable segments of the population.”

Perhaps the trajectory of the Tinubu administration in the unfolding Nigerian story in the Fourth Republic is following that route. The initial seemingly gloomy situation is gradually giving way. Indeed, light is not only assured at the end of the tunnel, it is presently beginning to shine brighter and brighter through the tunnel. There is plenty evidence for this as I previously indicated.

For instance, naira has continued its streak of rebound and steady appreciation. The Nigerian currency had gained considerably against the dollar with the exchange rate standing around N1, 200 to $1 on Wednesday as I was rounding off this piece. The Green Back is expected to fall even further following the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria, through a circular on Monday, to offer $10,000 to each eligible Bureau De Change operators at N1, 251/$1 with a directive that they sell to eligible end users at a spread of not more than 1.5% above the purchase price. This is likely to impact the prices of many  products.

And to further tighten liquidity in the country and shore up the value of the Naira, the CBN Monetary Policy Committee, at the end of its second meeting in 2024, raised the monetary policy rate by 200 basis points from 22.75% to 24.75%. The Cash Reserve Ratio, CRR, and Liquidity ratio were retained at 45% and 30% respectively.

There are other developments and unprecedented data on the economic front indicating the country is turning the corner. One is the marked improvement in the value of capital importation into the country, which NBS put at 66%, while the recent clearance of the backlog of foreign exchange by the CBN, demonstrating a new regime of trust and confidence at the apex bank, which should help push down high air transport fares in the country, is another.

Additionally, the country’s external reserves increased by $347.53 million to $34.11billion as at March 7, 2024 from $33.016 billion it was on January 2, 2024, recording a 2.83% year-to-date accretion following inflows from foreign capital and remittances.

Perhaps more remarkable is the courage, political will and personal commitment to effecting a change and improving the quality of life of the people in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda that President Tinubu has brought to the fore. This shone brilliantly in his handling of hydra-headed problems. This determination and taking bold decisions, in my view, are contributory factors in the changing Tinubu governance narrative.

Take for instance the recent abduction of 137 schoolchildren from a school in Kuriga, Kaduna State. The  President categorically ruled out paying ransom for the release of the children from the hold of the bandits. Mercifully, they were released through the collaborative efforts of the Federal and State Governments and their security agencies. Paying ransom is akin to giving ammunition to the bandits to acquire more sophisticated weapons for their evil activities.

To speedily effect changes in the country’s security architecture to enhance safety of lives and property, the President,  working in collaboration with the state governments,  has set up a high powered committee to draw up modalities for the introduction of state police. Last week, Vice President Kashim Shettima asked states which are still dragging their feet on the issue to urgently submit their proposals so that necessary legislation could be forwarded to the National Assembly towards this objective.

There is also the Pulaku initiative, a non-kinetic effort aimed at addressing the root causes of farmer-herder conflicts and fostering national unity. President Tinubu quickly ordered the release of N50billion as operational fund for its immediate take off. The initiative, expected to revitalise the communities through the construction of residences, roads, schools, and essential facilities, will initially focus on seven states that have been disproportionately affected by farmer-herder conflicts. They are Sokoto, Kebbi, Benue, Katsina, Zamfara, Niger, and Kaduna States.

In this regard, shortly after the removal of the fuel subsidy, the Tinubu administration released a first tranche of N2 billion each to the 36 state governments and the Federal Capital Territory to provide palliatives to ease the pains of their people as a result of the economic reforms. The President also recently urged state governments to seize the opportunity of increased Naira revenues from the Federation Account to issue and pay salary awards to their workers just as the Federal Government has been doing through its N35,000 wage award to federal public servants. Indeed, many state governments have recently stepped up the introduction of palliative measures to provide succour for their people in critical areas including agriculture and food affordability, education and healthcare among others.

There are many more. An executive order to further boost investment, create jobs and business opportunities in the oil and gas sector is in place while the Federal Government in collaboration with states again are engaging in mechanized agriculture. It is also noteworthy to state that, though the prices of goods may be high, the claim in some quarters that Nigeria is facing food crisis is not supported by facts. Those insinuating this are merely playing politics. President Tinubu had since ordered the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of grains to the states from the National Grain Reserves. And with what I witnessed last week, along with the National Communication Team led by Information Minister Idris Mohammed Malagi, in respect of massive planting of wheat and maize in Jigawa State, even in dry season, the state is set to meet this year’s target in respect of domestic consumption of the two commodities and exports.

The Tinubu government is thinking and working frantically to ensure all of that and more so that governance remains impactful and enduring. It has become compelling that as citizens, we must continue to play our part. The example of Lawyer and Businessman Allen Onyeama’s Air Peace and its gallant intervention, which helped to crash the airfares on the lucrative Lagos-London route, is there for all of us to emulate.

In a statement on the 72nd birthday of the president, the speaker said President Tinubu has dedicated his life to the service of the country and humanity.

He said the president has refined and redefined politics and governance in Nigeria, adding that the history of Nigeria’s democracy would be complete without the name of President Tinubu occupying a vantage position.

While saying that President Tinubu gets better with age, the speaker said Nigerians would soon rate his administration as one of the best the country has ever had.

“It is our prayer that the Almighty Allah continues to strengthen him, grant him the grace and the wisdom to navigate our dear country out of the current turbulence.”

The speaker urged Nigerians to pray for the president and his administration, as well as give him maximum support so that his government’s Renewed Hope Agenda would achieve its objectives.

On his part, deputy speaker, Benjamin Kalu, applauded the President for his obvious pragmatic moves that are gradually helping the economy to rebound.

In a statement by his chief press secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu saluted the resilience, courage and tact so far employed by the President to move the country forward.

The deputy speaker expressed optimism about a virile economy and a future that will raise the living standard of Nigerians and assured the President of the necessary legislative interventions to achieve the set objectives.

He said: “His Excellency, President Ahmed Bola Ahmed, on behalf of my family and the good people of Bende Federal Constituency, I heartily congratulate you on your 72nd birthday. It is indeed a milestone of age.

“This milestone has no doubt seen you fight a plethora of battles for the survival of democracy and the elevation of our country to enviable heights.

“Through this age, we have also seen you invest in people and institutions irrespective of tribe or religion to better the lot of the citizenry.
