    Tinubu orders single-digit tax system

President Bola Tinubu has directed the creation of a single-digit tax system with a maximum of nine taxes.

This directive will take effect after the work of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms is completed.

A single-digit tax system refers to a situation where the total number of taxes a business or individual has to pay will be reduced to nine or fewer

Right now, the number of taxes individuals and businesses pay is in double digits. The goal of the President’s directive is to simplify the tax code and potentially lower the overall tax burden, making it easier and potentially cheaper for businesses to operate in Nigeria.

According to a statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser on Media to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) chairman, “the plan warranted the president’s directive that a conducive environment be created for businesses to flourish and grow the economy”.

Adekanmbi said the President’s directive for a single-digit tax system was revealed by the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, Zacch Adedeji, during a visit by the management team of Guinness Nigeria.

The FIRS boss shed light on President Bola Tinubu’s strategic plan to address Nigeria’s economic challenges.

According to Zacch Adedeji, “The president gave a directive that he wants a single-digit tax in the country, meaning that the maximum number of taxes we will have after the work of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms will be nine taxes.

Following President Bola Tinubu’s order, the FIRS Adedeji stated “is committed to growing the national tax base rather than introducing new taxes or increasing existing ones.

To this end, the FIRS he said “has restructured its operations to provide a more customer-centric approach.  Taxpayers are now categorized based on size (large, medium, small) to receive specialized support and a one-stop shop for all tax-related activities”.

Tinubu’s economic plan Adedeji said extends beyond tax reform. He highlighted additional initiatives aimed at stimulating growth like the upcoming launch of a consumer credit scheme aimed at increasing Nigerians’ purchasing power, ultimately benefiting businesses like Guinness Nigeria.

There is a plan in place for a streamlined platform that will simplify the payment process for businesses importing goods, reducing delays and costs, as well as the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund that targets improvements in Nigeria’s transportation network, specifically railways and roads. Enhanced infrastructure will decrease the cost of transporting raw materials within the country.

The CEO of Guinness Nigeria, Adebayo Alli, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to operating in Nigeria despite economic challenges.  He expressed interest in collaborating with FIRS to support economic recovery efforts.

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the president-elect of the Republic of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, over his recent electoral victory at the presidential election.

In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu noted that President-elect Faye is assuming the office with great promise and a sterling record, wishing him success in his new task.

Tinubu also congratulated President Macky Sall for successfully piloting an election, which has been universally hailed as peaceful and transparent.

President Tinubu, who is also the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, noted that the successful conduct of the Senegalese election will go a long way to help efforts at promoting peace and constitutional order in the sub-region.

“President Bola Tinubu extends his congratulations to Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye on his election as the President of the Republic of Senegal.

“President Tinubu notes that President-elect Faye comes with great promise and a sterling record, wishing him success as he takes on this important job of leading the good people of Senegal.

“The President also congratulates His Excellency, President Macky Sall, for overseeing an election that has been widely adjudged as peaceful and transparent.

“President Tinubu states that the success of the presidential election in Senegal and the successful conduct of the general election in Liberia a few months ago have affirmed his long-held conviction that the taproot of democracy is deeply established in West Africa and will only grow stronger as it is watered by good governance, justice, and fairness to all.

Ban on foreign trips: Emulate Tinubu, group tells governors

The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has enjoined state governors to emulate President Bola Tinubu by banning foreign trips for senior government officials at the subnational levels.

The group also commended the president, describing his action as a laudable move to check the frivolous use of public funds.

The chairman of the group, Jesutega Onokpasa, in a statement on Wednesday, March 27, in Abuja, argued that the decision will have a knock-on effect on the cost of governance.

He said: “A laudable template has been laid by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for state Governors, who have the interest of the country at heart. Mr President’s decision to stop frivolous foreign trips at taxpayers’ expense is a welcome development that should have salutary effects on our foreign exchange reserve.

“Hitherto, the economy was managed in a manner suggesting that Nigeria had an inexhaustible foreign exchange reserves, leading to a near collapse of the Naira.

“Almost every department of Government was in a race to outspend one another as officials embark on frivolous foreign trips with costly Estacodes (allowance for official trips) for those on such trips.

“Agreements and discussions that should have been handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or our embassies abroad became duplicated at all levels.

“The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment was also treated as if it did not exist, as officials scrambled for scarce foreign exchange to spend abroad. This was a part of the cost of airline tickets for such trips.

“Now, it is becoming a different story with the firm resolve of President Tinubu to bring down the cost of governance. In addition to his recent resolve to implement the Oronsaye report by merging government agencies with overlapping functions, Nigeria is set to save a lot of funds from the gross wastage of the past. This is commendable.”

TMSG then urged the governors to take a cue from the President and put a similar structure in place.

The group added: “If the 36 state governors can borrow a leaf from this initiative of Tinubu, it would go a long way to stem the tide of leakages in our finances as well as steady the decline in our foreign reserves.

“Apart from the beneficial effect to our foreign exchange reserves, it will show Nigeria as a serious country in the comity of nations, where the giant of Africa is no longer ready to accept that ‘anything goes.’ “Fiscal discipline is critical for national discipline.

“Since the current democratic experience began in 1999, the fear of the cost of governance has been a major source of worry for many. Today, the monster is being tamed by an administration that is ready to prove that without external intervention Nigeria has what it takes to move the nation forward. This is a welcome development that should be applauded by all.”

  • Tinubu, CBN policies strengthening the Naira, says policy think-tank

Tinubu, CBN policies strengthening the Naira, says policy think-tank

A body of independent policy analysts, the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) has hinged the rising profile of Naira on the positive policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The group, in a statement by its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju in Abuja on Wednesday said the appreciating status of the Naira is a reflection of the bouquet of positive policies introduced by the authorities and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)

The policy think tank argued that the government and the CBN deserve commendation for policies that address the supply and demand sides of the foreign exchange market.

The statement reads: “To properly put this in perspective, we need to, as a matter of fact, from the outset, commend the dexterity of the CBN Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, in conceiving policies and deploying them to time and target as he virtually willed into existence a new monetary policy and exchange rate ecosystem by using policy actions to address both the supply and demand sides of the domestic foreign exchange market.

“One of the profound policies introduced to the market on 31st January, in the graduated steps to take charge of the market, was the administrative admonition to Nigeria’s Deposit Money Banks (DMB) to bring their Net Open Position (NOP) to the prudential limit by 1st January 2024. That was just less than a 24-hour notice to the banks.

“CBN’s NOP mandate to the banks implies that no bank holds a 20 per cent long position that is, holds more foreign currency assets than liabilities by more than 20 per cent. The strategic objective of this mandate was to get the banks to start offloading into the open market, about $ 7 billion kept in long currency positions. That was a manoeuvre to address forex supply side concerns.

“On the same day, 31st January, when the CBN relayed the important NOP to banks, the apex financial sector regulatory body also issued the new International Money Transfer  Organisations (IMTO) rules for remittances in Nigeria – the rules, which are a bouquet of auxiliary policies, are generally understood to mean occasions of recurring person-to-person (P2P) payments of relatively low value from persons living abroad to persons in their home country which now account for a sizeable portion of Nigeria’s foreign exchange in-flow”

Outlining the effect of the clearing of forex backlog on the naira, IMPI said, “Perhaps, more instrumental to the resurgence of the Naira in the forex market is the clearing of the more than $7billion forex backlogs in the form of outstanding CBN commitment on swap deals and due returns to foreign investors who needed to recover forex they imported into the country or those desiring to convert monies earned in local currency in the course of their businesses to forex.

“The inability of the CBN to fund the forex needs of these different economic agents constituted an albatross of sorts on the national economy and was one of the major reasons foreign investors stayed away from the country. With the clearing of the forex backlog, we can submit that the national economy is on the threshold of capacity optimization.

“The latest in this regard is the sale of dollar to BDCs at the rate of N1,251/$, an indication of the effective rate in the forex market, and for us, it signposts the possibility of increased value of the naira over the next few months,” it surmises.”

To arrive at its position, the policy group did a comparative analysis of recent monetary policy activities between Nigerian authorities and their Egyptian counterparts.

“Unlike Nigeria, Egypt recently adopted the free-float regime on the prompting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of measures to address economic dysfunctionalities in that country, especially as related to a foreign currency crisis that has more to do with liquidity than with pricing just as being experienced in Nigeria.

“Again unlike Nigeria, Egypt secured a $ 35 billion investment, by way of the sale of land assets, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and another $ 8 billion loan from the IMF. Soon after the adoption of the open market-determined forex rate, the Egyptian Pound fell beyond 50 pounds against the dollar in the last week of February. This was after being officially held at about 31 pounds to the dollar for almost a year while it reached more than twice that figure on the black market, leading to inflation figures ratcheting up to 35 per cent in February from 30 per cent in January. Compared to Nigeria where the inflation rate moved from 29.9 percent in January to 31.7 percent in February.

“In early March, Egypt’s Central Bank hiked policy rate by 600 basis points compared to the 400 basis points in Nigeria. The country also agreed to slow down infrastructure spending and allowed the Egyptian Pound’s value to plummet, in exchange for a $ 5 billion expansion of its preexisting loan package from the IMF to $ 8 billion.

“There was no such commitment by Nigeria because its situation is self-determined and organically oriented. The influx of cash, combined with the IMF loan into Egypt has reportedly rectified the government’s foreign currency shortage, at least for now. Comparatively, Nigeria’s government and the CBN do not have the benefits of the kind of huge fiscal intervention made by the UAE and the debt support from the IMF even though the two countries suffer the same economic fate.

“Yet, while the situation report from Egypt signposts an economy at its tether end, the Nigerian economy, evaluated by its foreign exchange outlooks currently, may have turned the corner with an attribution of certainty, a major consideration for foreign investors inflow into the country,” it added.”

IMPI is of the view that the fiscal and monetary policy authorities in Nigeria have found a way of setting the economy on a path of resilience.

Low-key birthday: ‘Tinubu ’ll apologise to newspapers later’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not unmindful of the loss his directive against congratulatory advertorials to mark the anniversary of his 72nd birthday will cause media organisations.

He plans to apologise to newspaper organisations for denying them the opportunity to generate revenue through celebratory advertorials when he turns 72 on Friday, the Presidency said yesterday.

Admitting that the directive to make the anniversary low-key might have hurt newspapers, the Presidency said the prevailing challenges across the land informed the President’s choice.

For almost two decades, well-wishers have been organising colloquiums every year to mark Tinubu’s birthday.

Two years ago, the President cancelled the conference at the venue following the attack on an Abuja-Kaduna-bound passenger train by bandits.

Tinubu told the guests who were already seated to return home and pray for the safe release of some passengers, who were abducted by the attackers.

Yesterday, the president explained his decision to forego an elaborate celebration in a message posted on X (previously Twitter) by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to him, the ceremony will not align with the current mood in the country.

Onanuga said: “Besides, he didn’t want government agencies to use public money to place congratulatory adverts for him.

“He (Tinubu) restated that he would rather want well-wishers to give the money to orphanages or old people’s homes.

“He acknowledged that newspapers who were expecting to make money may have been hurt.”

Onanuga quoted President Tinubu as saying: “I know they will be angry with me. But I will apologise to them later.”

In a statement on Sunday by Onanuga, the President appealed to his family, friends, associates, and well-wishers not to host elaborate events in his honour.

The statement reads: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will turn 72 on Friday, March 29, 2024. The day will be another important milestone in his life as a leader and a statesman.

“During an auspicious occasion as this, it is customary for family members, friends, and associates to celebrate him in different ways.

“As the leader of our country, President Tinubu, in deference to these challenging times, will not host any birthday event and does not want any of his associates and numerous well-wishers across the country to organise any celebratory event on his behalf or in his name.

“President Tinubu appreciates the honour of being the leader of Africa’s leading nation at this time and he is working very hard to make life better for the generality of our people.

“According to him, because of the present mood of the nation and the recent killing of the officers and men of our army and police in Delta State and the recent spate of security breaches by criminal elements in different parts of Nigeria, there should be no form of birthday event and placing of birthday goodwill advertorial messages in newspapers. Goodwill messages should not be placed on radio and television stations either.

“President Tinubu enjoins friends and associates who may wish to place goodwill advertorials to kindly donate the money to charity organisations of their choice in his name.

“Although the President appreciates the gallantry of our Armed Forces in freeing our children kidnapped in Kuriga, Kaduna State and in Sokoto State, he will use the opportunity of his birthday to reflect and re-dedicate himself to the task of building a more stable, more secure, virile, prosperous and united Nigeria.”

  • Clark supports Tinubu’s order to security agencies to fish out killers

Clark supports Tinubu’s order to security agencies to fish out killers

Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s order to the security agencies to fish out killers of the 17 soldiers in Delta state.

This is as Clark kicked against the invasion of his country home by the security agencies over the incident, saying it has gone beyond coincidence as it has become a source of concern.

Clark who came to the defence of the president on the order to fish out those behind the dastardly act, said the directive was not for the army alone but for the entire security agencies.

He said it was within the right and power of the president to give such an order to all the security agencies.

Seventeen soldiers from the troops of the 181 Amphibious Battalion of the Nigerian Army who were on a peaceful and mediatory mission after a reported communal clash between the Okuama and Okoloba Communities in Ughelli South and Bomadi LGAs of Delta State were ambushed and killed on 14th March 2024.

Clark who strongly condemned the act called for a speedy investigation of the issues leading to the killings, while also calling on the security agencies to arrest the criminals that carried out the barbaric act.

Clark who spoke in Abuja on Tuesday on the invasion of his country home in Kiagbodo, Delta State by the army said, the president did not only bark out the order to the army but the entire security agencies.

He said: “He was talking about security agencies, which include the police, DSS, Army, Air Force and the Army. As far as I am concerned, he did not single out the Army to fish out those who killed the soldiers. So I was terribly disappointed when I heard that the soldiers did not allow people to enter, even the police couldn’t enter the community.”

Clark said every other question surrounding who sent the soldiers should be set aside as the focus should be on fishing out the criminals behind the killings.

“Let’s forget about who sent them. Let us look for the people who committed this heinous crime. Once that is done, because some of us believe that a strong commission of inquiry should be set up by the governor of the state but in this particular matter, the governor of Delta State has gone in a month ago and this matter has been settled. So I believe something is wrong somewhere. Some other people may have been responsible because neither Okuama nor Okoloba has the wherewithal, the capacity, the courage and the right equipment to fight the army. Let us fish them out.”

On the action of the police and soldiers searching his home, the 97-year-old said the report that criminals were hiding in his house was a mere rumour, probably to implicate him.

He however said that the security agencies should have accorded him that respect by informing the state governor.

Clark who was a former National Commissioner said with his age and national standing, “If the police have information that I have someone in my house, they ought to have reported to the governor, they didn’t contact anyone.”

He however said he has forgiven the army after the apology by the General Commanding Officer, Port Harcourt Division but warned that such an act of disrespect should not be repeated as it is not the first time.

Narrating his story, Clark said: “At about 6 pm on Saturday, 23rd March 2024, I got a telephone call from someone who identified himself as the commanding officer of Nigerian Army, Division in Port Harcourt.

“He said that a tracker of the Nigerian Army, had tracked one Mr. Vote, the community chairman of Okuoma Community, whom the Army was looking for in respect of the killings of the 17 men of the Nigerian Army, to a house in Ughelli; and that the military men had broken into the house, ransacked it, before they were informed that the house belongs to me, that he was very sorry and apologising to me on behalf of the Army.

“In my usual way and as a leader who is expected to condone as much as possible, I accepted his apology wholeheartedly but told him that I do not own a house in Ughelli, that the house he is referring to, could be my father’s.

“I went on to sympathise with the Nigerian Army over the gruesome murder of the soldier, an action I had condemned severally the moment I heard of it in the news. I assured him that we would all work within our powers to avail the security agencies of any available information that would unravel the whole thing and bring the perpetrators to book. We ended the discussion on a cordial note.

“It was not long after that, I was inundated with calls from my home, Kiagbodo, telling me how the army had invaded my country home by land and by air. That they came in about 5 trucks loaded with armed soldiers numbering between 30 and 40. They my house, used their legs to break open all the doors in the compound including the security door to my sitting room which was locked because I reside in Abuja. At the same time, flying their drone within the premises. Some of them went to the buildings behind the main house and also broke all the doors that were locked.

“They matched out my staff living in those buildings, including lecturers at the university; made them sit on bare ground. They also broke into my late brother, Ambassador Akporode Blessing Clark’s house; a man who served this country internationally in various capacities, including as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; as both of us share the same premises. They brought out his son almost naked, as the young man was taking a bath when they stormed the house.

“All their phones were seized. The people had to identify themselves and told them whose house it was before they asked for my telephone number, which they said they would pass to their “oga”’, before they all departed. One would have expected that at this juncture, a call could have been put to the Governor of Delta State, to inform him of what happened.

“I immediately called back the commanding officer to tell him of the actions of his men. And he said he was aware, and that was why he called to apologise.

“Before continuing, let me play the devil’s advocate by stating that the army may not know that the house they went to in Kiagbodo is my country home.

“But I feel very uncomfortable to conclude this recent incident with such theory when I recall how men of the Tactical Squad of the Nigeria Police, attached to the Office of the Inspector General of Police, on 4th September 2018.

“Now, a few days ago, on Saturday 23rd March 2024, another set of state actors, this time the Army, invaded my country home, by land and air, breaking into my house that was securely locked.

“This has gone beyond coincidence and is giving me a source of concern.

“By God’s grace, I am one of the oldest men in this country today. On May 25, I will be 97 years old, God keeping me alive.

“I deserve to be respected, left to live in peace, safety and tranquillity.”

He also warned of dire consequences should he die as a result of the actions of state actors.

He added: “Having said that, I want to appreciate the enormous responsibility on the shoulders of the Nigerian Army, who are burdened with so much internal security issues. And it is for that reason I want to use this medium to kindly appeal to all concerned to work assiduously to unravel what happened and bring the perpetrators to book. The earlier this matter is concluded the better, as it will also avail the affected communities which are almost locked down today, without adequate food and water, the chance of returning to normal life.

“Again, I call on the various state actors to let me live in peace, and treat me with the kind of respect that I deserve, having served this country, and still serving even at the age of 97 years, until when it will please the Almighty God to call me home.”

The aggrieved members told the NWC that their constituents were also pressuring them for lack of representation in the Plateau state government.

They also called on the United Nations, United States of America, European Union, United Kingdom, and all lovers of democracy all over the world to bring pressure to bear on all the institutions of governance and democracy to “compel the insidious and Speaker of the Plateau state House of Assembly to promptly convene the Assembly which has been on recess for about five months, and inaugurate its members.

Adopt political solution to free Kanu from incarceration, Metuh urges Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has again been urged to deploy a political solution to the security crisis in the southeast region of the country by taking steps that will ultimately lead to the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The former national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, who made the call in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, March 26, also commended President Tinubu for his positive posture and commitment towards peace, development, and stability of the southeast

The former opposition spokesman, who announced his resignation from partisan politics two years ago has been a strong voice for the release of Nnamdi Kanu for which he made several presentations to the immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari.

Metuh described President Tinubu as “a long-standing democrat and listening leader who deeply understands the sensibilities and nuances of all social segments of the country” and urged him to deploy his Pan Nigeria skills to engage and end the restiveness in the Southeast.

According to Metuh, “It is against this backdrop that I make this passionate plea to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to adopt a political solution that will lead to the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as a major step to restoring lasting peace in the South East Region of the country.

“President Tinubu has shown positive posture and commitment towards the peace, stability, and development of the South East. I humbly urge him to further deploy his Pan Nigeria skills to engage and end the restiveness in the South East through a political solution that involves dialogue, understanding, and the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
