President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday expressed deep displeasure over the killing of army officers and soldiers on a peace mission in a Delta State community, describing it as a direct affront to the nation.
Outrage greeted the dastardly act yesterday from Nigerians, who viewed the situation as unbecoming.
The military, which expressed indignation, was ordered by the President to fish out the killers and bring them to book.
The President in a statement, he personally signed, directed the military to immediately arrest the perpetrators.
Others who yesterday condemned the killings are Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori; Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Northern Governors’ Forum, Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Alumni Association of the National Institute (AANI) and Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of the Ewu Kingdom where Okuoma is located.
A Lieutenant Colonel, two majors, and one captain, along with 12 soldiers and a civilian, were ambushed and killed on Thursday in Okuoma, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.
The operatives were said to have gone to the Ijaw community to free one Anthony Aboh, an indigene of neighbouring Okoloba, who was allegedly abducted on Wednesday over a land dispute between the two communities.
Residents of Okuoma had reportedly fled in their hundreds before some of their homes were set ablaze.
The Nation gathered that there was a strong military presence in the troubled community.
Condoling with the “families of these fallen soldiers, their colleagues and their loved ones,” the President assured that those behind the “heinous crime will not go unpunished.”
“The Defence Headquarters and Chief of Defence Staff (Gen. Christopher Musa) have been granted full authority to bring to justice anybody found to have been responsible for this unconscionable crime against the Nigerian people.
“My government will not relent until we achieve peace and tranquillity in every part of Nigeria,” he said.
The President added: “On Saturday morning, the Nigerian people and I woke up to the dreadful news of the unprovoked killing of our brave military personnel during a rescue mission to the Okuoma community of Delta State.
“The incident occurred on Thursday, 14 March, 2024 when our troops, responding to a crisis between Okuama and Okoloba communities in Delta State were ambushed.
“A Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain and 12 soldiers sadly lost their lives. One civilian was also killed.
“As the Commander-in-Chief, I join all well-meaning Nigerians and the men and women of our armed forces to mourn and express my profound grief over the needless death of our gallant soldiers.
“I extend my profound condolences to the families of these fallen soldiers, their colleagues and their loved ones.
“The military high command is already responding to this incident. The cowardly offenders responsible for this heinous crime will not go unpunished.
“This incident, once again, demonstrates the dangers faced by our servicemen and women in the line of duty. I salute their heroism, courage and uncommon grit and patriotism.
“As a nation, we must constantly remember and honour all those who have paid the ultimate price to keep our country safe, strong and united.
“The officers and men who died in the Okuoma community have joined the pantheon of great men and women who gave their all, with honour, in the service of our fatherland.
“Members of our armed forces are at the heart and the core of our nationhood. Any attack on them is a direct attack on our nation. We will not accept this wicked act.
“May God continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria and keep the members of our armed forces safe.”
In Asaba, the Delta State capital, Governor Oborevwori said his government was “gravely disturbed by the killings of the officers and soldiers because the act was as alien to the culture of Deltans”.
Like the President, he commiserated with the families of slain military men.
“This incident is despicable and not in sync with the culture and tradition of Deltans.
“It runs contrary to the values and path of peace that the state government is promoting,” he lamented in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary Festus Ahon.
The governor assured that his administration would “take all measures necessary to fish out all those behind this dastardly act and ensure they are made to face the full wrath of the law.”
He appealed to all citizens and residents of the state to remain law-abiding as the government would continue to protect lives and property in the state.
PANDEF, a group led by Chief Edwin Clark, said the killing was “totally unacceptable and must be fully investigated.”
The group also mourned the slain operatives and enjoined the Army and other security agencies not to be deterred by the latest tragedy.
“This dastardly act is unacceptable and must be fully investigated. There must be no sacred cows, the culprits must be brought to book as early as possible.
“PANDEF mourns the slain military personnel and commiserates with all the families and the entire Nigerian Army.
“PANDEF further urges the Nigerian Army and other security personnel around the country to continue with their great national service and not to be deterred by this present sad development,” PANDEF said in a statement by Clark.
Youth groups in Urhobo and Ijaw – IYC Western Zone and UPU – also flayed the incident and called for a probe.
The IYC zone, said in a statement by its Chairman, Doubra Okotete; secretary, Omoghomi Olu-Derimon and Information Officer, Lugard Izuokumor, however, decried reports that Ijaw youths carried out the attack.
Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig.- Gen. Tukur Gusau, on Saturday accused youths of Okuoma of being behind the act.
Co-chairman of the Security Committee of UPU, Efe Kigho, described the incident as “not only a clear case of man’s inhumanity to man,” but “repugnant in all ramifications and condemnable.”
He said: “While the attack on military men is not and cannot be acceptable, the ongoing killing of innocent civilians and destruction of Okuoma community can never be justified.”
Kigho also enjoined the Federal and Delta State governments as well as all relevant authorities to “immediately intervene in the ongoing senseless and baseless butchery, carnage, massacre, slaughter and ensure the cessation of all forms of hostilities to enable our displaced innocent mothers and children The Urhobo Media Practitioners Advocacy Group (UMPAG) called for an independent panel of inquiry into the killings.
A statement by its Secretary, Theophilus Onojeghen and an executive member, Shedrack Onitsha, alleged “a grand conspiracy to twist the facts of the bizarre incident to paint one party as savages and adjudge another as saints.”
Commiserating with the military, federal and Delta state governments, UMPAG demanded an “independent investigation and arrest of the culprits.”
It said any panel mandated to probe the incident should unearth the “true mission” of the military personnel in the two communities.
AANI, which also called for the arrest of the killers, said their act “was an unforgivable affront to national values.’’
“AANI stands in solidarity with the military and the families of these heroes who paid the supreme price in the quest for peace in Delta,’’ its National President, Emmanuel Okafor, said.
Clement Ikolo, the traditional ruler of Ewu Kingdom where Okuoma is located, supported the calls for the arrest of perpetrators but appealed for the protection of the community against external aggressors.
Two National Assembly members from Delta State- Joel-Onowakpo Thomas and Nicholas Mutu – called on relevant authorities to tread softly on the incident.
Thomas, who represents Delta South in the Senate, called for a holistic investigation into the crisis and urged the state and federal governments to urgently intervene to prevent it from escalating.
“There is a need for the security agencies to go after the mastermind of the heinous crime.
“There is also the need for the military to tactically deploy intelligence in tracking the mastermind to avoid the killing of innocent people in the Okuoma community.
“I commiserate with the military authority, families of the slain soldiers as well as others who may have lost their loved ones to the crisis.
“I urge the people of Okuoma Community to assist the military to fish out the killers of the gallant soldiers,” he said.
Mutu, a member of the House of Representatives, urged relevant security agencies to work round the clock to fish out the killers.
The lawmaker, however, frowned at what he called purported distortion of facts of the incident
“The Ijaw is not in any way linked or connected to this unjustifiable barbaric and inhuman and condemnable act,” he said

Sixteen men of the Nigerian Army, including the Lt. Col. AH Ali, Major Share, Major Obi and Captain Zakari, were ambushed by those identified as Okuama community youths, captured, killed and decapitated.
It would be recalled that, Wednesday this week, the Bomadi Division of the JTF led by Maj. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured loyal and dedicated members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of a good reward system.
National Chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje disclosed this when he played host to members of the Forum of APC State Chairmen in his office in Abuja.
The 36 states party chairmen had on Friday paid a solidarity visit to President Bola Tinubu where they made a case for a good reward system for party members that contributed to the electoral success of the party during the 2023 general elections.
Addressing the party’s state chieftains, Ganduje expressed Mr. President’s appreciation to the chairmen, his readiness and promise to address all the requests tabled before him.
Applauding the chairmen for the visit to the President, Ganduje said, “this is a very important courtesy call you made to Mr President. He was so happy with it. I want to assure you that a visit like this will be a continuous one.
“I am also happy to inform you the he (President Tinubu) has granted your requests, especially on political appointments. He is doing something about it. He will surely reward hard-working and loyal members of the party accordingly.”
Ganduje also used the meeting to intimate the state chairmen of the proposed electronic registration of party members billed to kick off soon in the 774 local government areas of the country.
Emphasising the importance of the registration exercise, Ganduje urged the state leaders to own the project, stressing that they will be involved in the recruitment of personnel to undertake the exercise in their states.
APC’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, also told the state chairmen that the party’s headquarters had concluded plans for a seamless and hitch-free exercise, adding that they were only waiting for the flag off date from the President.
Duru also said that the state chapter of the party will in the new week be expected to send two persons for training of the electronic registration adding that the two personnel will be scaling down the training exercise at the state level for officers to conduct the exercise.
Confirming the President’s assurance, the Secretary of the forum and APC Chairman Cross River State, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar, while addressing newsmen at the party’s national secretariat after meeting with the Chairman and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) said
“We have worked with our various stakeholders to collate names of party faithful. And it was also the mantra of Mr President that ‘monkey dey work, monkey dey chop. Baboon no work baboon no chop.’ In fact, Mr President had told us in one of our meetings that if he catches a baboon that didn’t work coming to eat, he was personally going to arrest that baboon.”
On the electronic registration, Ogar commended the vision of the national chairman in embarking on the exercise.
According to Ogar, “our national chairman came very prepared. He was focused on doing away with the delusion of APC parading 41 million people when in reality we went into an election we barely got almost nine million votes.
“It is time to face reality because we have a President who is a progressive. We have a national chairman who is a progressive. You have state chairmen who are very progressively minded. And therefore we will be most comfortable if today we know we have 10 million registered members in APC.”

Some Ijaw groups including the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide have continued to applaud President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing an illustrious Ijaw man, Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro, as the new administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).
Other groups singing the praises of the President include the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Western Zone, the Apostle Bodmas Kemepadei-led Egbesu Brotherhood and an online publisher, Saint Onitsha Meinpamo.
The IYC zone which spans Delta, Edo and Ondo states applauded President Tinubu for the appointment which it described as “a breath of fresh air”.
The IYC said: “There is no iota of doubt that Dr. Dennis Burutu Otuaro is the perfect man for the job at this point in time that Nigeria needs committed and result-oriented leaders at the helm of affairs.
“Otuaro is a tested and trusted leader in Niger Delta, a man who is well aware of the myriad of issues bedeviling the region and a known face who also played an active role in the formation of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).
“His appointment is significant in many ways: the IYC is optimistic that Otuaro will bring in his wealth of experience to sustain the gains recorded by previous administrators of the programme and also improve it in line with the current realities.
“While the IYC is hopeful that Otuaro, who is deeply rooted in the Niger Delta struggle for a better living condition, will bring in a lot of reforms, we are sure that he will work closely with all critical stakeholders in the region to fully implement the aims and objectives of the programme.
“This, to us, as Ijaw people, is one of the best appointments made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu so far in his administration.”
Also, the leadership of the socio-cultural group, Egbesu Brotherhood, led by its National Coordinator Apostle Bodmas Kemepadei, congratulated Otuaro’s appointment.
In a statement yesterday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, Kemepadei said they were overjoyed by the President’s appointment of Otuaro, described as an exponential personality of the Niger Delta struggle.
He said that Otuaro’s appointment was well deserved, noting that they were confident that he would employ his wealth of knowledge in administration, leadership and creativity to reposition the PAP yet to meet the dreams and aspirations of its creation.
Meinpanmo, also a Niger Delta activist and beneficiary of the PAP, noted that the reason for the amnesty programme had not been achieved based on alleged poor performance by the successive interim administrators in tackling the retraining and reintegration of the former ex-agitators to the society.

President Bola Tinubu is determined to resolve the lingering power supply shortfall, energy theft, estimated billing, and stealing of power infrastructure, his Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila said on Saturday.
Gbajabiamila noted that the Tinubu-led administration was working assiduously with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the challenges bedeviling the power sector are resolved within the shortest possible time frame.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives gave this assurance while inaugurating two units of 20MVA Injection substation in his Surulere Constituency, Lagos, which were facilitated during his tenure as Speaker.
Gbajabiamila who was represented by the Senator representing Lagos Central, Wasiu Sanni Eshinlokun, further pledged the president’s commitment to improved electricity supply nationwide.
“Mr. President has allocated over N340 billion in the 2024 budget towards improving infrastructure in the power sector. President Tinubu is also concerned about cases of energy theft, estimated billing, and stealing of power infrastructure,” Gbajabiamila said.
While expressing delight at the project, the CoS assured that it would help to improve the power supply to Surulere environs including Akerele, Randle, Ishaga, Ogunlana, Shitta, and Adelabu.
He said when he briefed him; the President “was pleased about this public–private sector partnership between the Federal Government and Eko Distribution Company. We owe this dividend of democracy to Mr. President.”
Expatiating, Gbajabiamila said, “The Tinubu administration has shown its dedication to solving the power supply challenges of Nigeria from the get-go with the signing of the 2023 Electricity Act just days into taking over the reins of power of our country.

President Bola Tinubu says his administration is deploying resources to critical sectors to significant impact on the welfare of Nigerians.
A statement by presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale said Tinubu emphasised that the government would not allow the abuse of the nation’s treasury.
He made the commitment at a meeting with the Forum of State Chairmen of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) led by its National Chairman, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, at the State House on Friday in Abuja.
The President assured that the government was working round the clock to improve the living conditions of all Nigerians.
He called on leaders at the grassroots to encourage citizens to get their National Identification Number for planning, structured interventions and full integration into government relief programmes.
“The programme of our government will be truly progressive; student loans, a national consumer credit system, and social welfare for the unemployed, as well as graduates.
“Every Nigerian will find a place of belonging in our country.
“In the eye of even the biggest hurricane, we will find that place of tranquility and prosperous harmony for the benefit of all.
“Nigerians will all partake on this national journey to prosperity,’’ the President said.
Tinubu told the APC states chairmen that his government had already drawn up a blueprint for large-scale livestock farming.
“We are bringing mechanised farming to the fore. Yesterday’s crisis will become today’s opportunity.
“Fertilizers are being supplied to farmers as we speak. Agriculture and economic diversification provide the answers to our problems.
“We will not continue to import food. We know how to turn lack into abundance, and the world will watch us do it again,’’ he said.
Tinubu added that the repositioning of the economy was a top national priority and urged party members not to wait for appointment before embarking on exemplary civic engagements.
“As we are fighting corruption, smugglers, and old subsidy beneficiaries, they most certainly will fight back.
“All those who falsified records and became losers with the subsidy removal, they will fight back, but we will defend our people.”
He urged all party chairmen in states, regardless of party affiliation, to mobilise citizens to go for NIN registration.
“Some are poor Nigerians who have not experienced formal education and have no understanding of what NIN is and how it will benefit their lives. We must teach them. We must care for them.
“We will be making faulty moves without accurate data and iron-clad, digital intervention structures,” Tinubu said.
He said a committee of governors, headed by Vice President, Kashim Shettima, is working on what must be done to further lift the people.
Ganduje had earlier told the President that the party was set to establish an Institute of Policy and Development, for the benefit of its members and the broader Nigerian public.
He pledged their loyalty and support as the administration strives to implement its economic programmes and policies.

Forum of State Chairmen of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to hold security chiefs responsible for security breaches in their areas of operation to stem the rising wave of insecurity in the country.
The party chiefs led by the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, gave the advice during a solidarity visit to the President on Friday in Abuja following the rising wave of armed banditry and kidnapping.
Briefing newsmen at the APC headquarters of the outcome of their meeting with the President, the Secretary of the Forum of APC State Chairmen and Cross Rivers Chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Ogar, said the forum believed that security chiefs in areas of insecurity should be held responsible for complexity.
The forum agreed that though the President is the Commander-Chief of the Armed Forces, nobody should expect him to be the one that will single-handedly pursue criminals, stressing that the constitution has saddled security agencies with the responsibility of fighting and curtailing criminality and it’s perpetrators.
“We made it very clear to Mr President that no reasonable person will expect him as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to take up arms and go round the crannies of Nigeria to fight the criminal elements, bandits, kidnappers and the armed robbers. And that is why the constitution of Nigeria has created the security agencies saddled with this responsibility.
“We commended the efforts and contributions of Mr President in terms of moral boosting. Financial support for equipment procurement and all others. The only added advice we brought to him is that people at the forefront should be held accountable.
“We were very firm but with absolute humility in telling Mr President that district police officers, or Divisional Police Officers, Commissioners of Police, SSS, or anybody in the front line of fighting and combating crime that is either lukewarm, taciturn or reticent should please be shown the way out,” he said.
Expressing concerns over the increasing wave of insecurity, the forum called on the President to wield the big stick and bring to book anybody, especially the security chiefs operating in affected areas.
“We therefore call on Mr President to wield the big stick on those who are not ready to help him because we have come to the conclusion some persons are out to distract Mr President and some persons are out to put this party in bad light.
“So, that whatever efforts Mr President is making would be beclouded by this nefarious activities of this bandits and vandals. And we think the time has come for Mr President to say enough is enough,” he added.
Shedding more light on the meeting with the President, APC Cross River Chairman said:”We took the opportunity too to speak on some very important national issues. We align ourselves with the efforts of the economic reforms being made by Mr President.
“But we didn’t lose sight of letting the President to know that as good as this economic reforms are, we are concerned about the insecurity in Nigeria.
“We are concerned about the hunger and hardship and therefore it was a moment for us too to commend Mr President because we all agreed and you too will agree, that this country is on a voyage it would have been thrown it into oblivion.
” We told him (President) to remain focus and stay on track that he has all of us, his district political officers at the sub-nationals levels to stand with him. We wasted no time in telling Mr President that our party needs to be strengthened.
” And in strengthening our party, we need to thank Mr President for giving us a man in the mode of our national chairman, his Excellency, Dr Umar Abdullahi Ganduje.”
