Our plan is to deepen partnership with Nigeria, Meta delegation tells Tinubu

The delegation of Meta Platforms Incorporated has assured President Bola Tinubu of the plan to advance its relationship with Nigeria during their visit to the State House on Thursday, March 21.

During his remarks, Sir Clegg, former UK Deputy Prime Minister and Meta’s President of Global Affair thanked the president for an executive order he issued, which enabled the landing of the Meta-backed deep-sea cable in Nigeria.

The company which owns social media companies, Twitter, Whatsapp and Instagram among others said that it will introduce in June 2024 a feature on its Instagram app that will allow Nigerian creators to monetize their content to enable them to earn a living using the app.

Sir Clegg said: “It is an extraordinary infrastructure project. When it comes on stream in the first quarter of 2025, it will be twice as much as the capacity of all subsea cables that exist. We buried the cable 50 percent deeper than any other subsea cables under the seabed.

“It is more powerful and more extensive in terms of its geographical connectivity. It could yield up to 37 billion dollars worth of increase in economic activity in the next two or three years across the African continent. We have a lot to do with Nigeria to deepen partnerships.”

ACF lauds Tinubu over reopening of Nigeria-Niger borders

The mouthpiece of Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the chairman of ECOWAS, over the recent reopening of Nigeria-Niger air and land borders and restoration of power supply to the Niger Republic.

ACF described President Tinubu’s directive as a welcome development for Nigeria and Niger, as it said that, the border communities of the two countries had groaned under the sanctions with local economic activities asphyxiated.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the Northern socio-cultural group said President Tinubu deserves accolades for acting in Africa’s interests, and taking a heroic step forward against neo-colonial manoeuvres.

The statement read: “The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) warmly welcomes news of order, from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT), for the reopening of Nigeria – Niger air and land borders, lifting of economic sanctions, restoration of power supply (to the Niger Republic) and other restrictions.

“ACF had maintained opposition to the sanctions and the threat of a Nigeria-led ECOWAS military invasion in the wake of a military coup in Niger, which were seen to only serve imperialist and neo-colonial interests, against the complex historical socio-cultural, economic and political ties which pre-dated European colonialism and its imposition of highly arbitrary boundaries.

“The directive from PBAT is a welcome development for Nigeria and Niger, whose border communities had groaned under the sanctions with local economic activities asphyxiated.

“The (border) communities can now look forward to a change in their challenging life conditions consequential to the sanctions. Critical supplies of food, medicines and electricity will now resume as will air travel operators and passengers see an end to the ordeals while the sanctions lasted.

“PBAT deserves accolades for the latest move and acting in Africa’s interests, a heroic step forward against neo-colonial manoeuvres.

“ACF congratulates the President for emerging from the saga as a bona fide, listening and responsive leader concerned with the plight of the people of Nigeria, Niger and, ultimately, West Africa.

“ACF also appreciates the intervention by General Dr. Yakubu Gowon, former Nigerian Head of State and a Founding Father of ECOWAS, in seeing to the end of the imbroglio. Happily, the General remains active in uniting West African people around issues of common interests. May General Gowon, ACF’s amiable Grand Patron, live even longer, enjoy good health and continue to reap from God Almighty’s Grace and Mercies.

“Finally, ACF calls on the political authorities in the Republic of Niger to reciprocate and fully exploit this window of rapprochement to reset Nigeria – Niger relations.

“ACF also calls on the heads of governments of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger (and Guinea) to back down on their threat to exit ECOWAS. This is no time for muscle flexing but one to sweep away the detritus of a war of words between brotherly nations for the sake of unity and progress; all must remain in ECOWAS for the benefit of member nations.

“The recent misunderstandings and animosities are but irritating bleeps that can and should be overcome in the interest of all West Africans. For certain, lessons have been learnt as to how to process such regrettable political developments that, ipso facto, engendered the acrimonious misunderstandings.

“Long live West African communities and May God continue to guide our leaders aright in their policy actions,” ACF said.

Terrorism financing: Tinubu has shown courage to end insecurity – Ex-lawmakers

Two former Lagos lawmakers, Mr Dipo Olorunrinu and Sir Jude Idimogu, say President Bola Tinubu has displayed courage and determination to fight terrorism by listing alleged financiers of terrorism in the country.

The lawmakers made this remark in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

They were reacting to the Federal Government’s uncovering of the identity of 15 entities, including nine individuals and six Bureau De Change operators and firms, allegedly involved in terrorism financing on Wednesday.

The Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit reportedly disclosed the alleged financiers in an email, entitled: “Designation of Individuals and Entities for March 18, 2024.”

The document revealed that the Nigeria Sanctions Committee met on March 18, 2024, where specific individuals and entities were recommended for sanction following their involvement in terrorism financing.

Reacting, Olorunrinu, who represented Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly from  2015 to  2019, said  the President with the step, had shown himself as a  courageous leader.

The APC chieftain urged the government to take a further step to arrest the culprits and all accomplices for “our nation to rest from war”.

Olorunrinu said: “This is what many fear to do. Tinubu, with this bold step has shown that the government really wants an end to this evil wasting our nation.

“We must commend the President for the great step. We need more of this boldness to uncover the people afflicting our people.

“We have lost so many numerous innocent citizens and members of the armed forces in these  attacks on the nation.

“Can we talk about the huge resources this has taken away from the nation that should have been used for  development of the country?.”

He urged the government to expedite action in prosecuting the alleged financiers, saying if found culpable, the consequences should be capital.

Also speaking, Idimogu, who represented Oshodi-Isolo Constituency II at the Lagos Assembly from  2015 to  2023, said  the step showed that there would be an end to terrorism soon in the country.

The former two-term lawmaker and financial expert said the government needed to further reveal owners or shareholders of various firms listed for financing terrorism in the country.

“This is a very good step to show that we mean real business in the fight against insecurity and ending it.

“But let the government disclose those behind the companies listed whether registered or not.

“There are names behind those companies allegedly financing terrorism. They should release those names, let Nigerians know those people.

“Mentioning the companies without the shareholders is not good enough, we should know the owners and they should be prosecuted  and shamed.

“No matter how big or mighty, we should uncover them, no one is above the law,” Idimogu said. (NAN)

Look into Benue crisis, CSOs beg Tinubu

The Coalition for Civil Society Organisation for Justice and Equity (CCSO-JE) has pleaded with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to look into the protracted crises in Benue State urgently.

In a statement by the National Convener, Comrade Olayemi Success, the group blamed the continued crisis in the State for poor management of the Benue’s affairs.

He said: “There has been serious outcries by our members from across the country, especially from Benue State, calling for the Civil Society intervention before the situation in Benue explodes into a full blown national crisis and emergencies, considering recent killings in the State that has affected both indigenes and non-indigenes as well, while drastically disrupting economic activities, even victimizing travelers along Federal Roads within the State.

The nation is in critical shape and cannot afford further reduction in National Productivity.

  • Pulaaku Initiative: Tinubu’s message of hope to the north

Pulaaku Initiative: Tinubu’s message of hope to the north

    By Modibo Mustapha

It was the first Nigeria Army Chief of Staff and former military governor of the defunct Northern Region, late General Hassan Usman Katsina (Ciroman Katsina), that described in the social menace of begging and destitution in the North as a Hausa-Fulani community problem. He said this during a media chart on an NTA network program in February 1992. Exactly 32 years ago.

In his frank characteristic, the late Ciroman Kastina (of blessed memory) attributed the unfortunate situation to the failure of “the current leaders of the North including myself”, and that “only we the northern leaders can find a lasting solution to the problem”.

This statement will not come as a surprise to those who were familiar with the frankness and truthfulness of the late General.

He then called on the northern leadership to work in unison, towards improving the condition of living in the region, through the provision of formal education and social amenities to the people, so that the menacing culture of begging on the streets of the north will be considerably minimized or completely eradicated.  He further warned that if the situation is left unchecked, it may snowball into a major problem, with dire consequences to the peace and stability of the entire nation.

Many will agree that the late General predicted the security situation of today over three decades ago.

However, before that remarkable statement was made by the late General Hassan Katsina on the regrettable culture of begging in the north, Professor Jubril Aminu, as Nigeria’s Minister of Education in 1989, had introduced the concept of nomadic education into the nation’s educational system.

Many at that time, did not understand the passion with which Prof. Aminu wanted to take formal education to the nomadic Fulanis in the forests. With the benefit of hindsight today, one can sadly attest to the fact that the worries and warnings of both late General Katsina and Professor Aminu have been justified. This is in view of the criminal recruitment in droves, of uneducated northern children begging on the streets, and the illiterate nomadic Fulanis in the forests, into the army of kidnapers, bandits, and terrorists that are currently unleashing mayhem on Nigerians.

It will not be considered an exaggeration to say that the absence of formal education and lack of social amenities for vulnerable children that are begging on the streets combined with the deliberate isolation of the nomadic Fulanis from general socio-political economic activities by government, have both contributed immensely to the frightening spate of insecurity in the North.

When on Tuesday, January 30, a group of policy analysts in Abuja known as the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI), identified the recently established Pulaaku Initiative as the long awaited non- kinetic solution that can drastically reduce the susceptibility of vulnerable children and the nomadic Fulanis to the heinous crimes of kidnaping, banditry, and terrorism in the North, there was a sigh of relief among many opinion leaders across the nation.

The personal commitment and political will with which President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the establishment of the Pulaaku Initiative can be seen in the rapid release of the sum of N50 billion operational fund for its immediate take off.

However, as good and thoughtful as the initiative appears, the challenge still remains that the intended beneficiaries of the new program need to be effectively mobilized and carried along in its implementation. This is absolutely a challenge to the northern establishment.

It will amount to major failure and a monumental self-indictment on the part of northerners in government, either in elective or appointive offices, Vice President Kashim Shattima, who is coincidentally the custodian of the Pulaaku Initiative inclusive, if this presidential opportunity for the return of peace and stability to the region is wasted.

Leaders from the North, irrespective of their political leaning or inclination, are expected to unite and give the Pulaaku Initiative the needed support to succeed.

The emphasis of the Pulaaku Initiative on the provision of formal education and other social amenities will go a very long way to give the vulnerable children in the North and the nomadic Fulanis a sense of belonging and formal orientation, needed to interact with their immediate social environment without fear of complex and discrimination.

The nomadic Fulanis in Northern Nigeria have been neglected for too long, owing to the failure of governments at all levels. The Pulaaku Initiative is the first policy of its kind, ever deployed by government with a deliberate intention to create government presence within the nomadic communities in the North.

This above objective, more than any other thing, should be more important to the North at this crucial point in time when peace and social stability seems to have eluded the region.

It is therefore incumbent on the current northern political class to pay more attention to issues like this that will bring genuine development to the people of the region, and to desist from distractive arguments on mundane issues like the unwarranted controversy over the transfer of some federal government officials to Lagos from Abuja.  This is gibberish, and a lallation of the highest order.

Mr. President needs to be commended and encouraged to sustain his interest and spirited efforts on the implementation of the Pulaaku Initiative so that the goals and objectives of the initiative can be achieved within a reasonable period of time, to the credit of his administration.

Duty therefore beckons on Vice President Kashim Shattima to use his good office to convene a summit of various leaders of the Fulani herdsmen, and the owners of the Sangaya Islamiya schools in the North. They are indispensable stakeholders in the Pulaaku Initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and enlisting their passion and support for the scheme will largely determine its success.

Finally, the need for the North to support the Tinubu administration cannot be over emphasized in this context. The appalling neglect of socio-economic issues relating to the herdsmen and the Sangaya Islamic education system by successive governments in Nigeria is the tap root of the current insecurity in the North.

The North must support the president for what Niyi Akinsiju, chairman of the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI), aptly described at a press conference in January as a “creative and pragmatic intervention that will most likely change the narratives around insecurity in the country”.

Niger Delta ex-agitators in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni area of Rivers state have appealed to the newly appointed administrator of the Niger Delta Amnesty Program (PAP), Dennis Otuaro, to prioritise the lingering issue of ex-agitators exclusion in the programmes and activities of the federal government agency.

The group who are members of the Niger Delta Liberation Force (NDLF) led by Amb. Sobomabo Jackrich (aka Egberipapa), commended President Tinubu for the appointment of Dennis Otuaro as the new administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Program (PAP).

“The Niger Delta Liberation Force and the Leadership of our Supreme Leader, Egberipapa is in support of this appointment and we thank the President for the appointment,” they stated.

Furthermore, the people also urged the new PAP Administrator to ensure that he closes every loophole that is impending on the success of the programmes and activities of the federal government interventionist agency with the view to foster lasting peace and sustainable development in the oil-rich region.

They expressed confidence in the ability of Otuaro to turn around the fortunes of the Presidential Amnesty Program, adding that his appointment is an indication that President Tinubu is committed to the good and development of the Niger Delta region.

He said: “Being a full-blooded Ijaw son who has been around his people and knows their various challenges, we are confident that he will use his new office to turn around the fortunes of the Presidential Amnesty Program and revamp it to realize its founding purpose and vision.”
