Northwest APC chairman hails General Musa’s nomination as Minister of Defence

The National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Northwest Hon. Garba Datti Muhammad, has applauded the nomination of immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as the new Minister of Defence by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Mohammed, who is a former member of the House of Representatives, said President Tinubu has demonstrated good leadership by picking General Musa from Kaduna State to replace former Jigawa state Governor, Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, who resigned as Minister of Defence on Monday on health ground.

While describing the President’s decision as “a perfect choice,” he described the choice of General Musa as a round peg in a round hole”, and expressed optimism that General Musa’s appointment would turn around the security situation in the country for the good.

He said, “On behalf of the entire All Progressives Congress (APC) family in the North West, I extend our profound appreciation to the President/Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for appointing General C.G. Musa as the new Minister of Defence.

“Without mincing words, Mr. President has made the right choice given General Musa’s pedigree as a fine, dedicated, dogged, patriotic, and gallant military officer, who, as the Chief of Defence Staff until October 24, 2025, gave a good account of himself.

“Time and time again, General Musa has proven to be one of the finest military officers that Nigeria has produced. From his days as a General Staff Officer 1, Training/Operations at HQ 81 Division to Commanding Officer, 73 Battalion; Assistant Director, Operational Requirements, Department of Army Policy and Plans; Commander, Sector 3, Operation Lafiya Dole, and Commander, Sector 3 Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad Region, General Musa has demonstrated uncommon courage as a soldiers’ soldier.

“During his period as the Chief of Defence Staff, he introduced innovative ways of dealing with the security situation in Nigeria, recording remarkable successes all through. He equally endeared himself and the entire Nigerian military to the citizens. No wonder, he has such tremendous goodwill among the populace.

“I am optimistic that General Musa would replicate his feats as CDS in his new position as the Minister of Defence,” he said.

While urging General Musa to maintain his military tempo, Hon. Datti wished him a successful tenure as Minister of Defence.

The event, held at the State House, Abuja, brought together top government officials, military chiefs, and members of the diplomatic corps, marking the formal kick-off of nationwide activities ahead of the Remembrance Day, commemorated annually on January 15.

In his remarks, President Tinubu said the annual observance remains a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by men and women of the armed forces “in the defence of peace, unity and territorial integrity.”

“As a grateful nation, we must continue to honour the fallen, support the wounded, and care for all who answer the call to serve. Remembrance Day is a reminder of the cost of peace and the enduring importance of national unity”, the President said.

The President paid tribute to serving troops confronting terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and other security threats, describing their resilience as “a source of national pride.”

He noted that the armed forces had demonstrated “exceptional courage across multiple theatres of operation,” restoring normalcy to many communities and contributing significantly to national stability.

Under his administration, he said, improved collaboration among security agencies has yielded major gains, including the surrender of tens of thousands of insurgents, neutralisation of high-profile terrorist leaders, and the rescue of numerous captives.

In the maritime domain, the President added, oil theft, piracy and illegal fishing have been curbed through enhanced platforms and new capabilities for the Army, Navy and Air Force.

“This year marks a new chapter in our remembrance activities,” the President added, announcing the introduction of a ‘Thank a Soldier’ digital platform with a QR code to enable Nigerians at home and abroad to send messages of appreciation to troops.

The initiative is designed to promote youth engagement and digital participation in national service.

Urging Nigerians to wear the 2026 emblem with pride, Tinubu said it symbolizes sacrifice, honour, and national gratitude. He also appealed to citizens to reject divisive rhetoric, embrace respect and tolerance, and safeguard Nigeria’s diversity as a national asset.

“As President and Commander-in-Chief, I remain committed to equipping and motivating our military. Security is a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he stated.

  • Press freedom, non-negotiable under Tinubu – Shettima

Press freedom, non-negotiable under Tinubu – Shettima

Vice-President Kashim Shettima assures that press freedom remains a non-negotiable pillar of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Shettima gave the assurance on Tuesday at the 2025 Conference and Annual General Meeting of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the conference is; ” Addressing Media Repression and Safeguarding Democratic Accountability in Nigeria. “

The Vice-President described Nigerian journalists as the nation’s primary defence against authoritarian rule.

He, specifically, said that journalists have played a stabilising role during moments of national tension by correcting misinformation and holding power to account.

Shettima affirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to protecting media practitioners from harassment and intimidation.

“We owe you a space of practice devoid of harassment, intimidation, or fear. That much is non-negotiable.

“As a government, we must continue to create an environment where truth can thrive without obstruction and where the work you do is protected rather than policed,” he said.

Shettima commended Nigeria’s media community for its historical resilience in confronting authoritarian tendencies.

The Vice-President stated that a successful dictatorship is impossible in the country due to the press’s vigilance.

“It is impossible, utterly impossible, to have a successful dictator in Nigeria.

“Never in our history has any person or government succeeded in suppressing the media permanently,” he said.

The Vice-President particularly commended journalists for standing firm against foreign information manipulation and interference, noting their refusal to surrender to disinformation campaigns.

“You have stood firmly against disinformation and refused to surrender your pens to falsehoods or foreign puppeteers. This honourable stance sets you apart.

“I stand before you today not as a wary politician, but as a friend, one who acknowledges your indispensable role and assures you that this administration respects, and will continue to protect, your right to freedom of expression,” he stated.

Shettima, however,  challenged the media practitioners to maintain ethical standards, warning against those who fabricate stories and refuse retractions when confronted with evidence.

He called for a professional culture that elevates “verification above virality, and nationhood above nihilism”.

“You have stood firm in the coldest nights of national adversity, and you have outlived those who attempted to place their boots upon your freedom.

” You have been the life-size mirror of our nation, reflecting us not as we wish to be seen, but as we truly are,” he said.

Shettima warned that, a nation with a silenced press, becomes one where public officers lose their way, and citizens lose their voice.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the commitment of the Tinubu administration to the enhancement of press freedom and independent journalism practice in Nigeria.

He noted that media-government relations is being reinvigorated and redefined under the present administration.

The minister described President Tinubu and  his vice, Shettima as “some of the most media-friendly leaders Nigeria has produced”.

Idris said the responsibility and commitment of the present leadership of the Nigerian media must be to uphold the presentation of facts.

He assured that the Tinubu administration will continue to operate on the fundamental principle of an independent press in acknowledgement of the fact that a free press is the amplifier of an engaged citizenry.

The minister said agencies of government, both security and regulatory, operate under strict protocols during civil demonstrations.

He noted that the federal government remained resolute in balancing national security with media freedom, particularly in addressing misinformation and related complexities.

He assured that the administration’s approach is not a retreat into control but to create mechanisms for dialogue and ethical reporting within Nigeria’s own cultural context for the media.

The IPI Nigeria President, Mr Misikilu Mojeed, said the conference served as a platform for critical reflection on the state of journalism in Nigeria.

He added that the event would enhance practice and safeguard the lives of journalists,  as participants are expected to adopt a call to action centred on media reform.

He called for collective action by journalists to address challenges confronting their interests, noting that “solidarity is the journalists’ greatest line of defence.”

Mojeed urged the Federal Government to call state governments, security agencies and other actors to order, curb incessant harassment of journalists, and strengthen the mechanism for their safety across Nigeria and beyond.

The Executive Director, IPI Global, Scott Griffen, commended IPI Nigeria for its commitment to press freedom and independent journalism in Nigeria and beyond.

  • Dasuki advises Tinubu to appoint retired military officers as envoys

Dasuki advises Tinubu to appoint retired military officers as envoys

Rep Abdussamad Dasuki (Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State) has called on President Bola Tinubu to consider the inclusion of experienced retired military officers in the next batch of ambassadorial nominees, particularly to nations with which the country will be engaging for military support and procurement of arms and armaments essential for the ongoing fight against terrorism, insurgency and banditry.

In a statement, Dasuki emphasizyed that the nation is abundantly blessed with retired military officers who have undergone extensive strategic and tactical training, participated in high-level operations and acquired invaluable battlefield experience over the course of their careers.

According to him, these officers possess the competence and practical insight needed to represent the country effectively, especially in mission-critical nations where defence cooperation and arms acquisition remain central to national security objectives.

“Our retired senior military personnel have served this nation with distinction. Their firsthand understanding of modern warfare, counterterrorism strategies and defence procurement puts them in a unique position to advance our national interests abroad,” he said.

“Deploying them as envoys to strategic countries will not only strengthen negotiations for essential military hardware but also ensure that the government receives informed, experience-based strategic advice at a time when the military needs modern reconnaissance drones and armed UAVs to combat all forms of armed conflicts that have become existential threats to the country.”

While acknowledging that the appointment of ambassadors is exclusively the constitutional prerogative of the President, Rep Dasuki stressed that the current realities demand a more security-focused approach to foreign representation, particularly in strategic countries.

“Insecurity has remained the most pressing challenge confronting our nation for over two decades,” he stated. “In recent times, the situation has worsened, with unacceptable levels of killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks across many parts of the country. These extraordinary times require extraordinary strategic alignment, including in our foreign policy direction and the calibre of individuals deployed to advance it.”

Dasuki further noted that a nation’s strategic needs must be reflected in its foreign policy, especially in the selection of envoys to countries where military and security cooperation is a priority.

By appointing retired military officers with deep operational experience to such posts, he argued, the nation would be better positioned to vigorously pursue its strategic defence goals, strengthen international partnerships and secure the equipment and intelligence required to overcome existential security threats.

  • Anatomy of the Tinubu gains in health sector

Anatomy of the Tinubu gains in health sector

This year has been an eventful one for the Tinubu administration. From reforms correcting long-standing distortions across multiple sectors and establishing durable understructures for sustained national development, to policies expanding enterprise and creative opportunities for citizens, the gains of the passing year have been well-forged and hold strong prospects for broader impact in the coming year.

In the health sector, for instance, the achievements recorded in 2025 have been far-reaching and sector-wide. Landmark programmes and initiatives were introduced; primary and secondary healthcare systems saw significant improvements; strategic agreements to promote local pharmaceutical manufacturing were signed; thousands of health workers were trained and others newly recruited; health infrastructure received major upgrades, including new top-tier cancer centres across the geo-political zones; hospitals were rehabilitated; and several turnaround policies were implemented.

So far, under the Renewed Hope Health Agenda, N68 billion for vaccine procurement has been approved, released, and transferred to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA). In addition, outstanding liabilities of N500 billion have been settled, creating greater fiscal space for health spending.

The nation witnessed a 17 percent reduction in maternal mortality in MAMII local government areas, while public sentiment regarding the health sector is shifting from pessimism to optimism. Over 60,000 health workers trained nationwide, improving confidence and quality of care.

Health insurance coverage expanded from 3 percent to over 11 percent during the year under review, representing more than 21.1 million Nigerians enrolled across Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) channels. BHCPF allocation was N131 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach N298 billion in 2026, enabling states and local governments to achieve more in primary healthcare delivery. From these funds, a total of 8,309 BHCPF primary health centres have benefitted across all states of the federation, with planned expansion to 13,521 BHCPF primary health centres by the first quarter of 2026.

Worthy of note, the federal government’s health budget has risen by 60 percent over the past two years, reaffirming that health remains a top priority for the Tinubu administration. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, spending on medical tourism has dropped by 52 percent since 2023 as a result of President Bola Tinubu’s health reforms.

In the past one year, 2,125 primary healthcare facilities have been revamped, with service integration rising to 72 percent. Primary healthcare facility quality scores have also improved from 42 percent to 70 percent.

More than 7.2 million Nigerians are now registered on the National Health Information Exchange, and over 200 hospitals operate with electronic medical records.

In March, President Tinubu launched the National Health Fellows Programme to provide opportunities for young Nigerians and improve service delivery at primary healthcare centres. The first cohort of fellows, drawn from all 774 local government areas (LGAs), served as fiduciary agents monitoring primary healthcare development and performance. A second cohort of public health fellows from all 774 LGAs will be inaugurated after a screening process scheduled to conclude by February 2026.

The first batch of fellows was deployed alongside Performance and Financial Management Officers (PFMOs) across the 774 LGAs at the primary health level, improving accountability for BHCPF funds at that cellular level.

In July, the federal government inaugurated three state-of-the-art oncology centres in Katsina, Enugu, and Edo. I participated in the inspection of the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital oncology centre in Nsukka during the federal government’s south-east engagement tour in August. The centres are equipped with advanced diagnostic and radiotherapy technology.

Service delivery and consumer confidence have improved remarkably in the past two years. Hospitals recorded 10 million visits nationwide in the second quarter of 2024, rising sharply to 45 million visits in the second quarter of 2025.

More importantly, Nigerians are increasingly utilising life-saving vaccines. Twenty-five million measles vaccine doses and 22 million yellow fever vaccine doses were administered, alongside the successful rollout of Africa’s first Mpox vaccine. Five million children have been immunised with the pentavalent vaccine, and 10 million additional children have received the Tetanus-Diphtheria vaccine as part of the nationwide diphtheria response.

Since 2023, Nigeria has also administered the HPV vaccine to 14 million girls aged 9–14, protecting them from cervical cancer, which afflicts 12,000 Nigerian women annually.

The federal government has taken critical steps to resolve legacy challenges in health-sector labour relations. The new hazard allowance for all health workers is being processed, while more than N10 billion owed under the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund has been paid in recent months.

Furthermore, the federal government is institutionalising the salary relativity adjustments demanded by health unions for CONHESS-aligned workers and CONMESS-aligned doctors.

The recent suspension of the strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) attests to the government’s commitment to improving staff welfare and working conditions.

According to the association, two of their demands have already been met.

“The Professional Allowance Table has been released, and a directive has been given to the Head of Service that the entry level for doctors should be CONMESS 3. So, the strike has been suspended immediately,” the Secretary-General of NARD said.

The National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS) has continued to consolidate its role as Nigeria’s central framework for pre-hospital and in-hospital emergency care.

Key milestones in 2025 include the expansion of EMS-onboarded states from eight to 31; strengthened audit and verification mechanisms, including the establishment of an NEMTC Claims Review Sub-Committee; nationwide collaboration with State Social Health Insurance Agencies for primary-level claims verification; and the onboarding of federal tertiary health facilities as Referral Emergency Treatment Centres, providing access for states not yet fully operational.

In line with the National Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, NEMSAS is supporting MAMII to reduce preventable maternal and neonatal deaths across 172 priority LGAs. Through community-based emergency transport systems, NEMSAS is addressing the “second delay” in accessing Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC). Functional community emergency transport systems have been established in 166 of the 172 MAMII LGAs, significantly improving timely access to lifesaving care in rural and underserved communities.

So far, NEMSAS has supported 31,870 pregnant women. In addition, 12,049 children under five (including newborns) have received emergency care, and 14,832 victims of road traffic accidents have received free ambulance transport and hospital treatment.

Nigeria’s health security has also strengthened with the enhanced capacity of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). Some of the milestones achieved so far include, expansion of the molecular laboratory network, enhancement of diagnostic capacity and reduction of turnaround time for disease detection across states.

Others are transition to digital surveillance systems, enabling efficient data collection, analysis, and real-time reporting of public health events; broadening of the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) network; improvement of coordination and response to outbreaks at national and subnational levels; and strengthening of strategic stockpile capacity, ensuring timely availability of essential medical and laboratory supplies during health emergencies.

Recently, Nigeria and Brazil signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen local pharmaceutical manufacturing and industrial cooperation. The MoU, signed by the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), EMS Brazil, and Oaks Medical Limited, was supervised by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate.

The partnership follows earlier discussions between President Tinubu and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during the Nigerian President’s visit to Brazil, where both leaders agreed to expand cooperation in pharmaceutical development, vaccine production, and related industrial areas. This MoU is one of over 20 that PVAC has recently signed with world-class companies to implement impactful projects.

Under PVAC, $1 billion in investment-guarantor financing has been secured from AFREXIMBANK, while the European Investment Bank’s Human Development Accelerator (HDX) is also providing a €1 billion pool for investments in the health sector.

With PVAC as the driving force, 84 new healthcare companies are in active discussions with international financiers for support in implementing various manufacturing and related investment projects.

Nigeria’s global health investment efforts have secured more than $250 million in new investment commitments from the Americas and the Asia-Pacific, with PVAC working to translate these commitments into actual investments.

Under President Tinubu and Professor Pate, Nigeria has taken a leading role in global public-health initiatives. The country provided the highest contribution of all African nations to the Global Fund for HIV, Malaria, and Tuberculosis at the recent G20 meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa. Nigeria also contributed $54 million to the StopTB Partnership’s global mission.

Nigeria is no longer merely the continent’s largest beneficiary but has become its foremost committed donor nation.

In the coming years, as President Tinubu’s reforms deepen and more initiatives take shape, Nigeria’s pursuit of widespread improved health outcomes and self-reliance in local drug manufacturing is expected to evolve from ambition to a quotidian reality.

Northern govs, monarchs ask Tinubu to suspend mining in north for six months to tackle banditry

…endorse state police, N1bn monthly security trust fund

Governors of the 19 northern states and traditional rulers on Monday called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order an immediate six-month suspension of all mining activities in the North as part of sweeping measures to curb banditry and criminal networks exploiting the sector.

The call followed a high-level joint meeting of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) and the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, attended by all 19 governors and chairmen of the region’s traditional councils.

In a communiqué issued after the session, the leaders warned that illegal mining has become a major driver of insecurity, fuelling armed groups, financing criminal gangs, and destabilising rural communities.

The governors and monarchs, however, according to their resolution read by the NSGF Forum Chairman, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, urged the President to also mandate the Minister of Solid Minerals to subject all mining licences to a six-month revalidation audit.

The Forum expressed deep concern over recent killings and mass abductions in Kebbi, Kwara, Kogi, Niger, Sokoto, Jigawa, and Kano States, as well as renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno and Yobe. They condoled with affected families and governments, describing the incidents as shocking and unacceptable.

They commended President Tinubu for the prompt rescue operations that led to the release of some abducted children and for ongoing security interventions across vulnerable states. The governors also praised the sacrifices of security personnel battling insurgents and bandits.

The Northern leaders declared total support for the President in taking “the fight into the enclaves of insurgents,” saying the region is united in backing every decisive step aimed at crushing criminal elements.

In a major resolution, the governors and monarchs threw their weight behind the establishment of State Police, urging federal and state lawmakers from the North to move swiftly to actualise the constitutional amendments needed to operationalise it.

To strengthen regional security coordination, the Forum approved the creation of a Northern Security Trust Fund, to be financed by a ₦1 billion monthly contribution from each state and its local governments, deducted at source under an agreed framework.

They said the fund, alongside the proposed mining suspension, would disrupt key revenue channels for armed groups, boost law-enforcement capability, and support a unified security response across the 19 states.

The governors and Traditional Rulers resolved to reconvene soon to assess progress on the adopted measures and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to restore peace and stability across Northern Nigeria.
