Speaking on the role of universities in national development, President Tinubu said Ahmadu Bello University among other Nigerian universities has contributed immensely to research and development, hence the need for them to partner industries and entrepreneurs to commercialize their ideas.

Tinubu set to fix port access roads to boost efficiency, competitiveness

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Minister of Works, David Umahi to fix all the access roads leading to the nation’s sea ports to boost efficiency, competitiveness, facilitate quick cargo clearance, and grow the GDP.

The directive was disclosed in Lagos, yesterday, by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyeyola at the 2024 International World Customs Day, organised by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in Ikeja, Lagos.

The theme for the event was: ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.’

The event which is celebrated yearly highlights the role played by Customs in the smooth flow of and transfer of goods across borders

Speaking at the occasion, Oyetola noted that access roads leading to the ports play a pivotal role in the efficiency of the ports and said that President Tinubu had directed Umahi to undertake urgent and comprehensive repair and maintenance of all dilapidated roads leading to the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa), the Tin-Can Island ports and other seaports across the country.

Some of the access roads are 1.6km dual carriage road within the Lagos Port Complex, 3km Tincan Island access road, 15.3km Eleme Junction -Trailer Park Junction dual carriageway at Onne Port and 3.1km FLT-FOT Roundabout single carriageway, also at Onne Port.

Oyetola, while alluding to the fact that the dilapidated access roads are making importers and exporters experience high transportation costs, prolonged transit times, and heightened risk on major roads, urged the importers to use the rails in moving their cargoes to the dry port and reduce the number of trailers on the road.

“The dry ports are spread all over the country. They are still building more. If we are able to do that, and we ensure we use rail most of the time, the congestion of the road particularly which leads to the port will be minimised,” Oyetola said.

He said he was honoured and delighted to deliver a keynote address at the gathering of the stakeholders as they commemorate the 2024 International Customs Day under the theme: ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.’

The Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Oyetola said, “was established by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with the goal of enhancing Nigeria’s economy by tapping into the vast potential of the maritime domain, valued at over US$24 trillion, supporting 90 percent of global trade, and generating millions of jobs.”

As it has been expressed by the WCO Secretary-General in his message to the global Customs community and their stakeholders, collaboration, the Minister said, “is germane in achieving trade facilitation and the security of the internal supply chain. To this end, we must integrate sustainability into policies and strategies, bolster investments in ports, research, and technology, and, most importantly, foster inclusive alliances among our stakeholders and partners, including the Nigerian Ports Authority, transporters, freight forwarders, shippers, NIMASA, and the Nigerian Customs Service.”

The recent passage of the Nigerian Customs Act 2023, Oyetola said, “creates a favourable environment for trade. It recognises opportunities, addresses challenges, and encourages partnerships between the public and private sectors.

“In this era of increased interdependence, Customs and its stakeholders must work hand in hand to ensure the overall success of initiatives that will help unlock the immense potential of collaboration and increase revenue generation,” he said.

While commending the leadership of Customs for agreeing to abandon the physical examination of cargoes at ports and priotising the use of scanners, Oyetola said, “would not only increase revenue, it will ensure ports efficiency and competitiveness. And it will reduce the cargo turnaround time. It is by committing to cooperation that we can enhance our effectiveness in safeguarding our waterways and facilitating global trade.

“With unwavering commitment, I assure you of my ministry’s support for collaborative engagements with stakeholders in the international trade community, aiming for a more sustainable use of ocean and

    coastal resources for economic growth.

“I, therefore, urge each one of you to carry forward the spirit of today’s event. Let us not only remember the achievements but also look ahead with enthusiasm for the collaborations and partnerships that await us. Together, we can continue to forge meaningful connections, foster innovation, and truly engage with purpose,” Oyetola said

In his message that was relayed at the event, the Secretary-General,  World Customs Organisation, Ian Saunders, charged officers to be alive to their duties.

He said, “While this year’s celebration is especially significant for me, its wider importance in part comes from it marking the launch of our new theme: ‘Customs Engaging Traditional and New Partners with Purpose.’

“This year, we are embarking on a path that challenges us to both reaffirm our longstanding partnerships and to boldly forge new alliances. Our world has changed dramatically over the last decade and continues to do so, presenting us with unprecedented challenges, including rapid technological advances, environmental and health crises, and complex geopolitical and economic dynamics.

“These conditions require that the global Customs community take a forward-thinking approach to its work and seek solutions that are not just based on its own knowledge and resources, but are supplemented by the support of stakeholders.”

He noted that the theme for 2024 is a strategic call to action, urging members to broaden their perspectives, think creatively, and embrace innovative approaches, adding.

“This is essential for Customs administrations to maintain their role in facilitating global trade and ensuring security in a rapidly evolving environment,” Saunders said.

At the tail end of the  event, awards were given by the service  to the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Muhammed Bello Koko, Customs officers and other dignitaries.

AFCON 2023: Tinubu tells Eagles to go all out against Cameroon

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has implored the Super Eagles to do everything possible to ensure victory for the country as Nigeria battle against arch rivals, Cameroon, tomorrow for a quarter-final place at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The President’s message was conveyed to the team through the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, via a zoom meeting yesterday. He urged the Super Eagles to tenaciously face their opponents in tomorrow’s crucial Round of 16 encounter.

According to a release signed by Diana-Mary Tiku Nsan, Special Assistant (Media) to Senator Enoh, the Super Eagles were informed that the President was following the team religiously, hence they must redouble their efforts as Nigerians back home are rooting for them.

“The President is actually watching the matches that you are playing and he is urging you and also showing an understanding of the game. He knows there was a lot of cautiousness at the group stages, and from the round of 16 there is going to be a more impressive performance,” the minister reportedly said. “I also need to communicate to you the mood back home. Every Nigerian is rooting for you. Every Nigerian is believing that you are going to do it again; like the slogan of the NFF: ‘Let’s do it again!’”

The Minister enjoined the players to listen to the coaching crew in order to fulfill their aspiration of winning the AFCON, as Nigeria seeks a fourth title following their previous successes in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

“There is nobody who wants to win this tournament as much as the Nigeria’s coach, Peseiro,” he said.

While urging the players to be focused and not be distracted by the social media, the Minister further stated that the tournament presents an opportunity for the players to carve a niche for themselves and thereby take their football career to the next level.

With a passionate appeal to the team to win their match against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Senator Enoh expressed confidence in the capacity of the Super Eagles to win the 2023 African Cup of Nations.

Responding on behalf of the team, the Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, while thanking the Minister for the words of encouragement, said that it would be nice to have the president in Abidjan watch and cheer them to victory.

  • Value of presidential courage

    Value of presidential courage

    By Tony Ikpasaja

Beyond that book titled; ‘The Presidential Courage,’ written by Michael Beschloss and published in the United States of America in 2007, the concept of courage of presidents and perhaps prime ministers as the case may be, is fast becoming a key component of contemporary leadership studies.

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan were among the exemplars mentioned by Beschloss for courageous decisions, even when such decisions were harmful to their political careers.

Fuel subsidy that was introduced about 50 years ago with the goal of cushioning the impact of the rising fuel prices in Nigeria, later became a monstrous thorn on the economy. There was so much oil at that time and domestic consumption was presumably low. It also exposes the short-sightedness of the military administrations at that time. As the oil subsidy grew in size and complications, it signalled the birth of an atrocious corruption cartel. Since then, successive administrations have groped around it without leeway.

International bodies and western countries persistently cautioned against subsidizing petroleum products, which they claimed was a misdirected economic policy. Later however, the Nigerian government found itself subsidizing fuel for many West African countries and even beyond. International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the economic policy was not sustainable. But successive presidents feared to touch the issue for fear of public outrage or the horror of losing re-elections. Rather they opted to live with it. At least one sitting president lost his re-election bid after retreating in his avowed war against the oil cartel.

Up till May 2023, oil subsidy cost taxpayers billions of dollars to sustain. During the twilight of the last administration, Nigeria got emasculated, at least economically, because of the intense borrowing to stay afloat. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023, punctured the dreadful oil subsidy with a historic jab; “subsidy is gone!” Even the cabals were caught napping. His critics suggested he could have done better by regimenting the removal. They clearly underrated the power of the cartel called oil subsidy thieves.

Presidential courage comes with uncommon boldness; the kind that inspire citizens. As soon as Tinubu made that surprise proclamation, the more discerning citizens got inspired and tightened their belts in readiness for the bitter pill of fuel increase. They probably trusted his decision, believing that there will be light at end of the tunnel. Evidently, in less than six months of the administration, local production of petroleum products has resumed. Dangote refinery has so far received six million barrels of crude oil at its two Single Point Mooring (SPM) facility within one month. The first crude delivery was done on December 12, 2023 while the 6th cargo arrived on January 8. Port Harcourt refinery, formerly a notorious case study for corruption has also bounced back to life. There is hope that the Warri and Kaduna refineries would soon start production. There are no more lamentations from the operators of modular refineries.

Oil experts have maintained that the prospects of refining crude petroleum locally would catapult the nation into a new level of prosperity and development. Momoh Oyarekhua, leader of the modular refinery operators in Nigeria once stated that the rising inflation was a consequence of doing oil deals in dollars. He opined that if NNPCL sells crude in naira denomination to local refineries (Dangote, modular operators and others), inflation would fall speedily. There is need therefore to encourage more investors into local production. Dangote refinery cost about $20 billion to build while modular refinery takes about $2 million or less to install. Modular refineries are built to produce kerosene, diesel, naphtha and heavy fuel oil though naphtha can also be treated as PMS. Modulars can also be enabled with additional reforming machines to produce PMS directly. Nigeria therefore needs more of them to meet local consumption while Dangote and the big conventional refineries can produce for export, so as to generate foreign exchange to grow the economy. Because modular refineries are usually sited on land, near well-heads, the cost of transportation through pipelines and vessels are often eliminated. There are hundreds of oil-heads across onshore Nigeria.

The idea of modular refinery was first mooted by Goodluck Jonathan to replace the illegal bush refining called ‘kpo’ in the creeks of Niger Delta.  The idea crawled through the eight-year administration of President Buhari. With over 100 modular licenses issued to potential investors, Nigeria may just be entering a new frontier of economic growth under the Tinubu administration. Transfer of technical knowledge comes with local refining and so Nigeria may soon be totally dependent on local expertise in the petroleum sector. This hope was escalated few days ago when industry giant, Shell Petroleum Development Company announced the sale of all its onshore assets to Renaissance; a consortium of local firms.

As President Tinubu delivers the oil sector from crumbling, his presidential courage will also be required to, among others; deal with insurgency, fight corruption and restore hope to the dwindling education sector. The closure of the nation’s porous borders will help in the fight against insurgency tremendously. His handling of the corruption scandal at the Humanitarian Affairs ministry is one body language that the EFCC, ICPC, Police and other security agencies must read proportionately; no more sacred cows. The education sector appears to be rebounding. The president has vowed there won’t be ASUU strike under his watch. Interestingly, last week, N683 billion was approved and released to public tertiary institutions nationwide as part of intervention funding programme. Presidential courage is vital at this time of national healing but the peoples’ support is more paramount for the Tinubu administration to succeed well. That’s how citizens set agenda for good governance and make their government succeed.

Ex-IYC boss urges Tinubu to relocate oil-related agencies

A former president of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Udengs Eradiri, an engineer; has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to order relocation of some critical oil-related agencies to the Niger Delta.

Eradiri, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, hailed President Tinubu for approving the relocation of key commercial agencies from Abuja to Lagos.

Eradiri, ex-commissioner in Bayelsa, in a statement he signed yesterday, said decongesting Abuja, which he described as the political capital, was long overdue.

He said some of the agencies being moved to Lagos, particularly key agencies of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), had no business being in Abuja.

Eradiri said: “Lagos is the commercial capital of Nigeria and key commercial agencies, parastatals and other trade-related establishments belonging to the Federal Government are supposed to have their headquarters in Lagos State, to facilitate smooth business operations and ensure the ease of doing business in the country.

“Nobody should read any political dimension to it because in the first place, they were not supposed to be in Abuja. We should not play politics with some decisions because the government got this one spot on.”

He, however, appealed to Tinubu to relocate key oil-related establishments and agencies owned by the Federal Government to the Niger Delta.

Eradiri called on the President to compel the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to move the headquarters of some of its subsidiaries to the capital cities of some states in the Niger Delta.

He said cities such as Yenagoa in Bayelsa, Port Harcourt in Rivers, Uyo in Akwa Ibom, Asaba in Delta, among others, were ready to become hosts of such agencies and to ensure adequate security for them.

He said such move would improve the economy of the region, stimulate job opportunities, reduce insecurity and facilitate wealth redistribution agenda of President Tinubu.

Said he: “We recall that during the visit of Yemi Osibanjo in his capacity as an acting President, he promised that the Federal Government would compel oil multinationals to relocate their offices to the Niger Delta. However, throughout the tenure of that administration, the promise was not fulfilled.

“We know that a new sheriff is in town with a new and unique ways of doing things. The new government believes in decentralisation and even development. In the spirit of the ongoing decongestion of the capital territory, we appeal to the President to remember the Niger Delta by compelling NNPCL to move headquarters of their subsidiaries to the region.

“It will facilitate development of our region and give communities a sense of belonging. It will also stop incessant attacks on oil facilities by persons, who feel sidelined by the operations of oil companies in our region.”

Nigerian youths are talented, ready to compete globally, says Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has said his administration will strongly support public-private partnerships (PPPs) to create dignified work and employment opportunities for Nigerian youths.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said the President spoke at a meeting with the President and Chief Executive Officer of Mastercard Foundation, Ms. Reeta Roy, at the State House in Abuja.

The President also assured the Mastercard Foundation CEO that Nigerian youths are vibrant, talented, eager to learn, and ready to compete globally.

The President praised Mastercard Foundation’s initiative to create 10 million jobs for young Nigerians, saying the programme aligned with his Renewed Hope Agenda for economic development and job creation.

“We believe in what you are doing. We are determined to run an inclusive government and change the dynamics and perception of this country. Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and, as such, must take its leadership of this continent very seriously.

“We must give hope and assurance to our teeming youth population. God has blessed Nigeria with a vibrant youth population, ready to learn, and capable of competing in the global economy of the 21st century. Leadership is what is necessary.

“The incubation is growing, and we are earning a good reputation, and we will continue to do that across sectors of the economy in order to achieve sustainable growth,” the President said.

President Tinubu also welcomed Mastercard Foundation’s emphasis on digitisation, recognising the role of technology as a potent and indispensable tool against corruption.

“We are ready to work with you and remove all impediments, and we have assembled a great team to work with you. The hope of the youth must be built on a solid foundation of sustainable growth and prosperity. We are working with other partners and we assure you of our robust and focused collaboration,” he said.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, acknowledged the wide-reaching impact of the Mastercard Foundation across Africa and its proven capacity to change the fortunes of human capital development in Nigeria.

“This is an institution that holds assets worth more than $40 billion and they are prudent in ensuring that their resources are applied digitally and in a way that reaches their target beneficiaries directly.

“Mr. President’s strong commitment to reforming social intervention and health service delivery in Nigeria will be greatly boosted through this partnership,” Pate said.

Ms. Roy told President Tinubu that the foundation’s focus on education and financial inclusion in Africa, particularly in Nigeria, aimed at impacting 30 million young Africans by 2030.

She reported the progress already made on the foundation’s 10 million target for Nigeria, saying 2.1 million young people trained under the ‘Young Africa Work Strategy’ were engaged in dignified work.

“We are still on a journey and have more work to do. We are excited about looking at a whole new frontier, and that is in the healthcare sector.

“While we may not historically be a health organisation or health foundation, we are looking at that sector as part of a vibrant economic landscape ripe with opportunities for young people and our focus will be on workforce development,” she said.
