    Tinubu hailed for suspending minister

The United Global Resolve for Peace (UGRFP) has applauded President Bola Tinubu’s decision to suspend the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, for instructing the Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, to pay N585m into the private bank account of a project accountant, Bridget Oniyelu in her ministry.

The organisation said the president’s responsiveness to the cries from the civil society space and well-meaning Nigerians demonstrated a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the overall well-being of the nation.

Chairman, UGRFP, Shalom Olaseni, in a statement, also applauded the president’s prompt establishment of a panel to reform the social programs of the ministry.

Olaseni said: “We further advocate for the extension of the panel’s mandate to comprehensively reform the entire humanitarian ministry. Such measures are essential to ensure the effectiveness and integrity of humanitarian efforts aimed at poverty alleviation and addressing societal needs.

“UGRFP emphasises the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. We urge the government to prosecute Edu based on the serious allegations against her, including involvement in padded budgets, mismanagement of funds, and overseeing white elephant projects running into billions of Naira. These allegations, if proven, signify a breach of public trust and necessitate legal consequences.”

In the past couple of weeks, Nigerians have been inundated with distressing stories highlighting alleged sleaze within the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and its agency, the National Social Investment Programme Agency, where billions of Naira was said to have been diverted into private accounts of some individuals.

In all honesty, this is not the first time that such stories would be emanating from the ministry, but what makes this one distinct is the seeming accusations and counter-accusations by the parties involved through the leaking of official memos in the social media.

As expected, the happenings in the ministry and its agencies have triggered a significant public outcry, resonating across various interest groups and eliciting widespread concerns among Nigerians. The gravity of the allegations, coupled with the pivotal role the ministry and NSIPA are expected to play in addressing humanitarian needs and poverty in the country, have sparked a collective demand for a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations.

In order to reassure Nigerians that such grievous allegations would not be swept under the carpet, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday, January 7, through a statement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, ordered a thorough probe into the allegations.

Subsequently, the president ordered the minister, Betta Edu to proceed on suspension to give room for thorough investigation into the allegation.

There was also a further directive to the chairman of the EFCC to conduct a thorough investigation into all aspects of financial transactions carried out by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

Already, a high-powered probe panel had been constituted under the chairmanship of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Wale Edun to carry out a “comprehensive diagnostic on the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes with a view to conclusively reforming the relevant institutions and programmes,” according to a statement by the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale.

In essence, President Tinubu’s decision to probe the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs is not merely a response to public pressure; it is a conscientious fulfilment of his duty to deliver on the promises of the Renewed Hope Agenda. This move reinforces his commitment to creating a government that operates with transparency, accountability, and a renewed sense of hope for the citizens of Nigeria.

This underscores the president’s resolve to ensure that public resources are utilized for their intended purposes, particularly in critical areas like humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation.

With this remarkable display of commitment to transparency and good governance, President Tinubu is sending a strong message that no one is above the law. This strategy not only enhances public trust but also serves as deterrence against corrupt practices.

The approach adopted by the president ensures that public officials accused of corrupt practices are afforded the right to fair hearing while also preventing any form of witch-hunt for any overt or covert reason. Indeed, President Tinubu is setting a standard for ethical governance in Nigeria.

President Tinubu’s distinctive leadership style has unmistakably marked him as a transformational leader, poised to guide the nation by leading from the front. His approach of being “on top of the game” has set him apart in the realm of leadership.

President Tinubu’s proactive stance in addressing corruption aligns with the nation’s aspirations for a transparent and more accountable government. It demonstrates a willingness to tackle the root causes of corruption and create an environment where public resources are used for the benefit of all citizens.

The president’s trait of sincere and steadfast fixity of purpose on anti-corruption is poised to deliver substantial economic benefits and rejuvenate investor confidence in Nigeria.

Of late, Nigerians were utterly shocked when news filtered in that individuals and corporations that were hitherto thought to be untouchables were being asked by the anti-corruption agency, to account for the huge foreign exchange allocated to them in the last 10 years.

The ongoing investigation into the forex allocation is poised to have a far-reaching impact on various fronts. First off, from the economic point of view, the proper utilization of the foreign exchange is essential for sustaining a stable and thriving economy. Any diversion of the foreign exchange allocated to those corporations clearly undermines the nation’s financial stability, affecting currency values and potentially leading to broader economic repercussions.

Investors, both domestic and international, are likely to be reassured by the government’s proactive stance against corruption. A corruption-free business landscape reduces risks and uncertainties, making Nigeria an attractive destination for investments.

The anti-corruption drive is key to improving the efficiency of government institutions by eliminating corrupt practices that can hinder economic progress. Through the promotion accountability and responsible governance, President Tinubu is creating a paradigm shift and deliberately telling the world that Nigeria is ready for business.

Renewed investor confidence is not only a result of the anti-corruption measures but also of the transparency and integrity instilled in the government’s operations. As corruption diminishes, public resources are more likely to be allocated judiciously, creating an atmosphere for economic expansion and progress.

In the long run, a corruption-free environment, being nurtured by the president, will attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and encourage local businesses to thrive, thereby generating employment opportunities and contributing to overall economic prosperity. President Tinubu’s anti-corruption drive is, therefore, a pivotal component of the broader strategy to revitalize Nigeria’s economy and position it as an attractive investment destination on the global stage.

UPDATED: Tinubu slashes official FG travel entourage by 60%

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate slash of travel expenditure of all government officials, including Presidency, by 60%.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, who announced on Tuesday, January 9, while briefing journalists at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said this is part of cost-cutting measures of the Presidency.

According to Ngelale, while the number of persons to travel with the President on local trips has now been cut down to 25, those to go with him on foreign engagements have also been cut down to 20 persons.

The numbers of personnel to escort the Vice President, First Lady and the wife of the Vice President, have also been cut down considerably.

Also, the directive has reduced the number of persons to accompany a minister on a foreign trip to four, while it cut the number for a head of the federal agency to two persons.

It was, however, gathered that all ministers and heads of federal agencies had already been notified of the new standards from the President as circulars had already been issued to the effect by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

He said: “President Tinubu has, by his most recent directive, approved a massive cost-cutting exercise that will touch across the entire federal government of Nigeria and the offices of the President himself, the Vice President and the First Lady. It will be conducted in the following fashion.

“One, the official trips that will be undertaken within the country that is when Mr. President or the Vice President travels to any state within the country, the massive bills that accrued due to allowances and estacodes for security detail coming from Abuja, going and travelling into those states, will be massively cut due to the directive of the President, that the security outfits within states, whether it be police, DSS, or branches of the military, will frontline his protective details when he travels to those states, a major cost-cutting initiative that will affect the Office of the Vice President as well as the Office of the First Lady.

“Additionally, when any international travel is being approved, the following limits have been placed on all ministers of the Federation. Four members of their staff, appointees and the like, will be allowed to travel with a minister on an official trip.

“For heads of agencies, that will be limited to two members of staff allowed to travel on an official trip. Furthermore, the numbers that the President has now approved for official travel with him that will apply to his principal staff are as follows: on international trips, the President has directed that no more than 20 individuals be allowed to travel with him.

“That number will be cut down to five in the case of the First Lady. Additionally, the number in the entourage on official international trips for the Vice President will be cut to five, the number that will be placed as a limit on the wife of the Vice President is also five.

“In terms of local trips, the President has approved a new limit of 25 members of staff to accompany him on domestic trips within the country. The Office of the First Lady is now limited to 10 staff members to accompany her on official trips within the country. The Vice President will be limited to 15 members of staff on official trips within the country, while his wife will be limited to 10 members of staff and officials within the country, the same as the first lady.

“It is pertinent to note that there is a difference between the number of members of staff allowed to travel with the presiding officials to international trips and those that are allowed for domestic. You will find that the numbers on international trips are less than those allowed on domestic trips. This is because international trips are far more expensive across the board and the President is determined to bring total sanity and prudence to the management of the Commonwealth of our people.

“As a result of this, the President has directed that every federal MDA also including the Office of the President itself and the Office of the Vice President, as well as the offices of the First and Second Ladies, are affected and bound by this directive of the president.

“Henceforth, the President is insistent that the notion of government wastage, the notion of recurrent expenditure being in excess, the notion that government officials will be allowed to conduct their affairs in a way that is different from what we are asking of Nigerian citizens, with respect to prudence and cost management, those days are over.

“The President is insistent that the prudence of government officials must reflect the prudence and efficiency of the Nigerian citizens and this is the directive of the President”, he said.

Responding to a question on ensuring adherence by all government officials to the new directive, Ngelale said those who would flout the rules would be doing so at their peril, adding that public officials already know that the President is serious enough when it comes to implementing his directives.

“With respect to the adherence to this most recent directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I believe we do not need to convince the officers of the Federal Government of Nigeria of the seriousness of the President with respect to how he will implement his directives.

“If there’s anybody who feels that the directive of the President is not binding on them, who feels that the President will not uphold this directive in implementation and seeks to test it, they will do so at their own peril.”

The new directive came just four weeks after the Tinubu administration faced public outcry over Nigeria’s massive representation at the recently held COP28 Climate Change Summit in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

  • Minister’s suspension ‘ll further earn Tinubu Nigerians’ trust – Ex-Oyo AG, others

Minister’s suspension ‘ll further earn Tinubu Nigerians’ trust – Ex-Oyo AG, others

A former Oyo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, says the suspension of Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, over alleged N585 million fraud will further earn President Bola Tinubu Nigerians’ trust.

Oyewo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) described that president’s prompt action on the financial scandal as a right step in the right direction.

“Tinubu has demonstrated that Nigerians should keep their trust in him,” he said.

Oyewo noted that successive administrations treated ministers like kings, as if they were untouchable and could go scot free with damning allegations of financial impropriety.

NAN reports that Tinubu had, on Monday, ordered immediate suspension of the minister, pending conclusion of investigations into the alleged payment of over N585 million into a private account.

Also, Prof. Gbade Ojo, a political scientist and public affairs commentator, noted that the prompt suspension of Edu was an indication that Tinubu is a no-nonsense president.

According to him, Tinubu’s action will further restore public confidence in his intention to impact positively on Nigerians.

“Actually, what Mr President did is the norm because you cannot be probing someone and still allow the person to stay in office.

“Records will disappear and evidences destroyed if that is allowed to happen,” he said.

An Ibadan-based financial expert and chattered accountant, Chief Abiola Ali, also praised the president’s efforts at unravelling the alleged diversion of public funds.

Ali, who noted that corruption had eaten deep into the nation’s fabrics, said that the action taken by Tinubu so far would further give Nigerians some hope.

“Definitely, this move will boost the confidence of the people who might not have fully accepted him,” he said, urging the president not to listen to those who might want to bring ethnic colouration into the matter.

According to the financial analyst, the suspended should be prosecuted, if found culpable after investigation by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

In his own contribution, Mr Kayode Akinsola, a retired Deputy Director of News and Current Affairs, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Ibadan, said Tinubu’s suspension order against the minister was commendable.

Akinsola stated that corruption was responsible for the present situation which Nigeria had found itself, adding that to overcome it, radical steps like this needed to be taken from time to time.

“To eradicate corruption, our leaders must be ready to step on toes, just like Tinubu is doing.

“He must leave a legacy of a corrupt-free society behind,” Akinsola said.

Corroborating Akinsola’s submission, Dr Isaac Abiodun, a consultant surveyor and businessman, said that the president’s pronouncements on the financial scandal would serve as a deterrent to other serving ministers and political appointees.

“To me, this action means that Tinubu is serious about leading Nigeria into greater heights.

“Previous administrations never handled corruption allegations against their appointees like this; they simply kept quiet and allowed corruption to fester,” Abiodun said.

Address oil sector crises, privatise refineries, NES urges Tinubu

The President of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), Prof. Adeola Adenikinju, has urged President Bola Tinubu to address crises plaguing the oil industry and privatize the nation’s refineries in order to optimize the benefits inherent in the sector.

The don also called on the Tinubu government to give the nation’s refineries to private operators to manage.

According to the immediate past Head of Department of Economics, University of Ibadan, for some years the sector has been contributing negatively to the economic growth.

Adenikinju, a Petroleum Economics professor said: “The oil sector in Nigeria is a very important industry. It is the major source of foreign exchange in this nation which has implications for government revenue.’’

The scholar therefore urged the government to solve all crises that have limited the current production in the Niger Delta.

Adenikinju said: “I don’t believe in the government running anything, because its records on how to run businesses are not cheering.

‘’The refineries should be privatized where the government becomes a minority shareholder, the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) model which is run by Shell where Nigeria has 49 per cent shares and other parties the remaining shares.

‘’If these refineries cannot be handled by a multinational company then it should be a company that has shown a track record of being able to manage local refineries.’’

Speaking on the 2024 budget, Adenikinju lauded the signing of the budget, saying the January-December cycle has eliminated the uncertainty of the past.
