Group urges Tinubu, Aiyedatiwa on choice of Ondo Dep Gov

An All Progressives Congress pressure group in Ondo State, Ondo Redemption Forum (ORF) has nominated a notable educationist and the state’s representative on the board of Odua Group of Companies, Prince Peter Oyeleye Fasua, for the position of Deputy Governor.

The group appealed to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to give Fasua’s choice, consideration.

The group in a statement in Akure on Saturday, signed by its chairman, Hon Oluwole Jelili, and secretary, Mrs Folashade Adeyemo, described Peter Fasua as a right peg in a round hole, applauding him for his contributions to the education sector and agricultural development of Ondo State.

“Sentiment apart, Prince Fasua has given his all to the development of Ondo State. Upon his return from the United States of America, rather than invest in urban communities like Lagos and Port Harcourt, he brought virtually all to Ondo, his home State.

“He has given scholarships to about 1000 indigent students of Ondo State at the All States College of Education Ero-Akure,  which he established many years ago; around which he also set up a ranch for animal husbandry.

“Besides, he built hostel accommodation for students near Adekunle Ajasin University,  Akungba-Akoko to assist the government in solving shelter problems facing most of the students.

“Even at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Lagos, where he serves for Odua Board as Executive Director, Prince Fasua has brought so much transformation that many can attest to, nationwide,” the ORF applauded.

The OSF noted that Akure-born Fasua has also stood firmly with now Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa at a time the governor, then as deputy governor, was facing a serious political crisis, which is confirmation of his sense of loyalty.

The group also commended the new administration of Governor Aiyedatiwa for commendable steps in building on the legacies of the late former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu,  who died recently.

“Despite facing so many challenges from detractors at a time when his boss was ill, Aiyedatiwa maintained a cool and focused mien, doing his best to carry on with the affairs of governance.

“Even after assuming office as Executive Governor of Ondo State, Aiyedatiwa has been trying to rally all, regardless of what happened in the past, and has particularly embarked on policies that are targeted at lifting the standard of living of the masses in Ondo State,” the group commended.

Tinubu interested in developing Southeast, says Deputy Speaker

Deputy Speaker of the House of House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu has canvassed the support of traditional rulers in the South East for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the President was interested in the development of the region.

Kalu, who spoke at a meeting with members of the Bende Traditional Rulers Council at the weekend, also said the President was happy that Ndi Igbo are resolved to stamp out insecurity and addressing other sociological challenges through the Peace In South East Project (PISE-P).

The Deputy Speaker asked them to support the government of the day to reap more benefits there-from.

He said: “Wherever Ndi Igbo see themselves, they encourage peace and harmony. We thank you for holding these values. I am your representative in the House of Representatives. I did not get there on my own. It was you that elected me. And this is why Abia State honoured me.

“A few days ago, the Governor of the state, Dr. Alex Otti, who is not a member of my party, decided to honour me with a high title in Abia. He told the Abia State Traditional Rulers Council to confer on me ‘Enyi Abia” (Strength of Abia). He must have seen something in your son.

“A day after that day, you saw what happened in Bende. It has never happened before. President Tinubu represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Senate President represented by his deputy, my boss, the speaker of the House of Representatives, the governor of the State, Dr. Alex Otti, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, other governors who couldn’t make it in person, came through their deputies.

“The Ooni of Ife, Emir of Kano, Emir of Bichi, Obi of Onitsha, over 15 Igbo billionaires were in Bende. I can go on and on.

“On this position, we are just starting work. The President called to say I am very, very happy that the Igbo came together for this. Truly, there is hope for the Igbo man. It does appear that this handshake across the Niger has started.

“Let us also support the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Some were afraid whether he will remember the Igbo. But he has proved all of us wrong by choosing the Chief of Naval Staff.

“The President also handed over the issue of Infrastructure into the hands of an Igbo son, Senator David Umahi, my friend, the former governor of Ebonyi to replicate what he did in Ebonyi in Nigeria. There are others too. A President who does not love Ndi Igbo will not do that”.

Kalu also called on the traditional rulers to support the government of Dr. Alex Otti of Abia to develop the state.

I will never disrespect you. You are our traditional rulers and I respect you all. And it will continue that way.”

Kalu also enjoined the monarchs to support PISE-P and the newly passed South East Development Commission bill in the House of Representatives.

“It is high time the Igbo joined the mainstream of political leadership of the country. Please, continue to pray for us. Be a part of the South East Development Commission. Please, be a part of PISE-P. You have a role to play”, he said.

Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Chairman, Bende Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Uchendu Okorie said: “We will support President Tinubu. We will go wherever he goes. We will follow our son where he goes. We have not had it so good like this before. He is a man of wisdom, an orator. We will help him to go higher. Yes, he’s in the House right now but we want him to go higher

“In the next dispensation, let us try to see whether he will go higher. He has the capacity to do what is right. God will continue to uplift him. He’s not doing it for himself. He’s doing it for Bende. We will continue to go with him”, he said.

Killings: Northern governors laud Tinubu’s steps to curb recurrence

The Northern Governors’ Forum has praised President Bola Tinubu for making efforts to probe the security crises in Plateau and Kaduna states in order to prevent a reoccurrence.

Chairman of the forum and Gombe State Governor Inuwa Yahaya, who gave the commendation in Hausa language on behalf of the body, also thanked the President for supporting the survivors and victims of other crises.

Yahaya addressed reporters at the Presidential Villa in Abuja after a meeting with President Tinubu.

“In my capacity as the Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum, I praise the steps taken by the President in order to get to the root of what happened in these two states and the pledge he made that the right action would be taken to prevent future occurrence of these incidents. A bove all, I am thanking him for the support given to victims or survivors,” he said.

Commenting on Plateau killings, the governor noted that it was not a new thing, but said there was need for a review of the immediate and remote causes to find a lasting solution.

“Despite the fact that this matter has been there for long, it is time for stakeholders to have a round table and tell each other the truth and then take deliberate steps toward loving each other. Before now, the people were living in peace and going about their normal businesses.

“Some of the major issues that seem to allow the problem to persist include issues like farmer-herder clashes, the clamour for indigenes versus settlers. But the world over, if any society or country doesn’t welcome visitors, such a nation will not progress. After all, we here are one and the same family,” Yahaya said.

  • Maiden new year speech

    Maiden new year speech

    • President Tinubu got the right tone, but a huge task lies ahead

In his maiden New Year address, President Bola Tinubu put his finger on the nation’s pulse. Nigerians had just passed through one of its dire yuletide seasons with the highs of inflation, the pangs of hunger, the tide of migrants fleeing our shores in what is tagged ‘Japa’, and waves of insecurity.

It is a time of despair, but it was his task to hold up hope. As far as rhetoric goes, he accomplished it. He cast our minds back to why he was elected president and itemised his mandates “to make our country better, to revamp our economy, restore security within our borders, revitalise our floundering industrial sector, boost agricultural production, increase national productivity and set our country on an irreversible path towards national greatness that we and future generations will forever be proud of.”

This is no mean burden. Nothing can happen without vision, and vision is impotent without will and the human resources to husband. He also cast back the minds of the country to his first few months of travels and travails, which included his engagement in India, where he met captains of industry who pledged to invest in the country in short order. He also travelled to the United Arab Emirates as well as a long series of meetings in New York against the backdrop of the United Nations General Assembly.

“Everything I have done in office, every decision I have taken and every trip I have undertaken outside the shores of our land, since I assumed office on 29 May 2023, has been done in the best interest of our country,” he noted.

If it was a speech of intention, it was of pathos. He acknowledged the pains and suffering in the land, irrespective of status or geography. But the poor groan.

“From the boardrooms at Broad Street in Lagos to the main-streets of Kano and Nembe Creeks in Bayelsa, I hear the groans of Nigerians who work hard every day to provide for themselves and their families.”

During the holidays, his government ameliorated sufferings with travel subsidies, reducing by half the cost of travels through designated routes in the country, and free train trips. Such interventions will do in the new year.

But pathos will be meaningless without realism. As a proverb says, if you are crying, you should also look ahead. The times are tough and call for tough hides from one and all. Hence he urged with chastened optimism that “our spirit must remain unbowed because tough times never last. We are made for this period, never to flinch, never to falter.”

The recent Plateau carnage hovered over the speech, even if he did not say it but he spoke of doing better to secure our lives.

He listed some of the steps to improve power with a deal with Germany leader Olaf Scholz through Siemens at COP28 in Dubai, last year. He also unveiled plans to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmlands for maize, rice, wheat, millet and other crops. This would follow the 120,000 hectares for wheat in November, last year.

He has promised to reward-and-punish review of ministers and agency heads to bring discipline to performance.

More importantly, he called for all, including opponents, to work with him as “joint heirs of the Nigerian commonwealth.” It is time to put aside the malice and smear campaigns so that “the light each of us carries – men and women, young and old – shine bright and brighter to illuminate our path to a glorious dawn.”

It is high time he pursued these and bore in mind the tendency of some in the political elite to plume themselves in luxury while the mass suffer.
