The significance of this visit lies not only in the physical presence of the president, but also in the promising potential it carries to tackle the persistent security challenges plaguing the area.

The Northeast has been a hotbed of insecurity, grappling with the devastating impacts of insurgency, terrorism, and communal conflicts for years. President Tinubu’s decision to prioritize this region in his early presidential visits speaks volumes about his administration’s commitment to addressing these pressing issues.

However, amidst the optimism, there exist challenges that demand diligent attention and action. The intricate nature of insecurity in the Northeast requires a nuanced and adaptable approach. Balancing military operations with humanitarian efforts, promoting reconciliation, and empowering local communities to resist extremist ideologies are imperative aspects of the overarching strategy.

Furthermore, the success of the president’s vision hinges not only on policy formulation but also on effective implementation and continuous evaluation of outcomes. It necessitates collaboration among various stakeholders, including regional governments, security agencies, civil society organizations, and international partners.

As citizens eagerly anticipate tangible improvements in security, development, and livelihoods, the significance of President Tinubu’s visit cannot be overstated. It signifies a pivotal moment in the quest for lasting peace and stability, offering a beacon of hope to a region long plagued by turmoil.

Peterside to Tinubu: save Rivers from going up in flames

A chieftain of All Progressive Congress in Rivers state, Dakuku Peterside, has condemned the current political crisis in Rivers state, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene to save Rivers from going up in flames.

He said there is no better phrase to describe what my Rivers state has become other than a shameful state of anomie.

In a press release sent to The Nation, Peterside said: “The people and their interests have been relegated to the background, whilst political jobbers hold the state on a knife-edge.”

“I have watched with shock, disgust, and disbelief the ongoing ugly descent into anarchy of governance and public affairs and the naked display of anti-democratic and anti-people actions by some political actors in Rivers State.

“From the reported defection of 27 supposed Honourable members of Rivers State House of Assembly to the demolition of the permanent site of the Assembly complex for renovation, there is no better phrase to describe what my Rivers State has become other than a shameful state of anomie. We see there a ranked display of mockery of democracy and mindless destruction of everything democracy by the same people who should be defending it.

He further stated: “it is sad that in the past few weeks, the peace, stability, and development of the state have been sacrificed on the altar of selfish political agenda, ego, and narrow interests of a few.

“It is clear from these political actors’ utterances and body language that the only goal dictating their actions is controlling the soul of Rivers State to the detriment of the state’s people. The people and their interests have been relegated to the background, whilst political jobbers hold the state on a knife-edge.

“Many of our past patriotic leaders sacrificed a lot to build a peaceful, united, and prosperous Rivers State, which these handful of political actors seek to destroy. Rivers people would resist this brigandage, and I urge them to do so urgently. Posterity is going to judge all of us.”

“As a leader and stakeholder in the affairs of Rivers State who has personally invested a lot in the development of our dear state, I call on the President and Commander in Chief to intervene and save Rivers from going up in flames. Mr President should note that Rivers State is gradually sliding into total anarchy.

“As a statesman, he cannot afford to fold his hands and watch the destruction of the state and institutions of democracy. Mr President, at this point, must place the interest of Rivers State and the people of Rivers State above every other consideration.”

He also appealed to all genuine elders and well-meaning youths of the state to oppose the politics of destruction and personality cults.

He said: “We should be in favour of politics of good governance and inclusive development.”

Don’t take side in Rivers, Ondo politics, Nabena advises Tinubu

Former deputy national publicity secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yekini Nabena on Wednesday, December 13, advised President Bola Tinubu against taking sides or dabbling into the political crisis rocking Rivers and Ondo states.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is at loggerheads with his godfather, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The transfer of power by the ailing governor of Ondo state, Rotimi Akeredolu to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Tuesday, December 12, has not doused the political crisis in the state.

Nabena in a statement in Abuja said the president and the ruling APC must respect the constitution of Nigeria in respect to Ondo and Rivers States.

He stressed that President Tinubu who believes in the political or social equality of all people and practices the principle of equality of rights must not play politics with the states.

Nabena added: “President Bola Tinubu must not play politics with the two states. He must show that he is a democrat and not a dictator.

“The constitution of our nation must be recognised and respected at this time in Rivers and Ondo states. The All Progressives Congress (APC) should also look into the party constitution carefully, bearing in mind that the National Working Committee of our party does not have powers to dissolve an elected chairman and his executive in Rivers.

“We are democrats and not dictators in APC, so we should be mindful of our actions. The implications of this action in Rivers state might be dangerous for our party shortly if the right thing is not done quickly now, if not, what happened before in 2019 will happen again with litigations here and there.”

Tell the president the truth, Lukman counsels aides to Tinubu

Salihu Moh Lukman, a former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised advisers of President Bola Tinubu to be patriotic enough to always speak the truth to the president and other leaders about the state of the nation, saying that this will enable them to succeed.

He gave this advice on Wednesday, December 13, at a press conference ahead of next week’s public presentation of his latest book “APC and Transition Politics” in Abuja.

The APC former National Vice Chairman (North West) said President Tinubu and other elected leaders are fallible human beings, stressing that we owe them the responsibility to tell them the truth.

He noted that his advice and actions in the past were being misconstrued to mean opposition to both the President and leaders of the party.

Recalling the struggle against some reactionary tendencies in the party, Lukman said: “I keep saying we are very lucky to have Asiwaju Tinubu then as an aspirant. If we didn’t have somebody with his weight, I’m not very sure we would succeed in repelling the attempt to impose a candidate.

“If we didn’t struggle, it would have been almost impossible to get Asiwaju to emerge as our presidential candidate. And what that reminder tells us is that we must not because today Asiwaju is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria assume that we have achieved, no we have to continue to struggle. And for me, as far as I’m concerned, Asiwaju is like any one of us, he is a human being. He has his strengths, he has his limitations.

“I was conscious of the fact that there were some people who were busy arguing in the leadership of the party that I rebelled against the leadership of President Asiwaju. I didn’t rebel against the leadership of President Tinubu. All I thought as a person what we owe the president is to be able to tell him the truth, no matter what. And that was what I did.

“So we must remain committed so that when we see he’s not doing the right thing we draw his attention. A situation where all of us become sycophantic, everything he does is right. We must not get to that.

“I think we owe our leader the responsibility or President Tinubu the responsibility to tell him the truth.”

In the new publication, “APC and Transition Politics”, the former Director General of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) said Vice President Kashim Shetimma, APC national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and immediate past Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo will grace the occasion with Chief Bisi Akande as the Chairman and the APC National Secretary, Sen. Ajibola Bashiru as the book reviewer.
