  • Tinubu, the Baobab

    Tinubu, the Baobab

Sir: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Yoruba ethnic group has an interesting proverb about ascendancy: Eni t’ó bá ma ga, esè rè á tínrín. (‘Those who would be tall cannot avoid having thin legs.’) Being tall here is the metaphor for recording the highest levels of achievement or reaching the highest rungs on the social ladder. Thin legs, on the other hand, are the metaphor for all the vicissitudes, cumulative challenges and obstacles encountered on the way to the top. No doubt, President Tinubu has had more than his fair share of these legs.

The president has, like Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, received the unkindest cut of all from people who, in the normal course of affairs, should be there for him. In fact, a review of the politicking preceding the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary shows clearly that many aspects of the denigration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu by Peter Obi (the presidential candidate of Labour Party – LP), Atiku Abubakar (the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party – PDP) and their followers were leftovers from the derogation of Asiwaju by significant sections of the Yoruba elite. This bears out the Yoruba proverb that says that the enemy is in the backyard, but the traitor lives right within the house with the target.

Some detractors have stridently cast aspersions on every bit of the president’s life and have invested huge resources into dragging him through the mud. Considering all the denigration, flagellation, sabotage, ingratitude and peer envy the president has suffered for so long, it is understandable for him, warts and all, to have earned substantial sympathy. Providentially, at every turn, he has been lifted well above his detractors.

Getting this far in life in spite of the seemingly overwhelming challenges on his path is enigmatic. Steadily, his detractors have inadvertently been creating a mystique around him, making him to live out the Yoruba saying, that the more they debark the baobab tree, the fatter it becomes. I found it noteworthy that a columnist with Nigerian Tribune, Suyi Ayodele, placed the president in the class of àkàndá. Specifically, in the article titled, “Salute to Melchizedek of Nigeria”, he said: “There are people known in Yoruba worldview as Àkàndá (special beings). Everything about them is a mystery (Àdììtú). They get away with everything that would easily consume other mere mortals.”

President Tinubu’s life experience, I believe, is the stuff of which legends are made, and his is the epitome of a grace-filled life. He won a senate seat at the first attempt, won the governorship seat at the first attempt, and won the presidential election at the first attempt. The crowning glory of this legendary winning streak would be his institution of sustainable good governance in Nigeria.

In this regard, the following articulation by Yap Kioe Sheng of the United Nations (UN) outline of the essentials of good governance is noteworthy: “Good governance has eight major characteristics. It is participatory, consensus-oriented, accountable, transparent, responsive, effective and efficient, equitable and inclusive and follows the rule of law. It assures that corruption is minimized, the views of minorities are considered and that the voices of the most vulnerable in society are heard in decision-making. It is also responsive to the present and future needs of society.” As another UN-related perspective states, the key question any effort towards good governance would seek to answer is: “Are the institutions of governance effectively guaranteeing the right to health, adequate housing, sufficient food, quality education, fair justice and personal security?”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not be deterred by detractors of whatever hue. And when he has recorded optimal success with respect to the above-mentioned indices of good governance, as his Renewed Hope Agenda promises, this nation would have been blessed with a profound visionary, an undisputable hero and an epochal and enduring inspirational figure.

Tinubu reveals plans to reposition education sector

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to revamp the education sector with a comprehensive four-year strategic plan that would be put in place to guide the development of the sector.

This plan, he added, would not only address the challenges facing the sector but also determine the future of education in the country.

This was contained in the President’s speech at the 35th convocation ceremony of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos.

Tinubu, who is a visitor to the college was represented by the Director of Legal Services, Federal Ministry of Education, Ezonebi Azorbo.

He noted that the government was aware of the challenges of the sector, adding that the issues, which include accessibility, equity, funding, teachers’ capacity building, institutional management, and technical and vocational education were being addressed.

The president said: “A comprehensive four-year strategic plan is underway, serving as a roadmap for the sector’s development. A crucial step in this direction was the National Stakeholders workshop held on October 19, 2023, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education. The envisioned roadmap is poised to shape the future of education in our nation.

“However, it is imperative to emphasise that addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts beyond the government. I call upon all stakeholders, particularly industry leaders, to complement the government’s initiative through contributions to research, structural development, scholarships for underprivileged students, capacity building and graduate employment. The partnership will significantly augment the accomplishments facilitated by agencies like TETFund, PTDF and international development partners.”

Tinubu inaugurates 15 motorised boreholes in Benue communities

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, November 23, inaugurated motorised boreholes in Benue communities.

Performing the ceremony, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Zaphaniah Jisalo, who represented the president said the boreholes were funded by the National Lottery Trust Fund.

He said the National Lottery Trust Fund had built a total of 19 motorised boreholes across the country, adding that 15 of them were located in Tarka and Gboko LGAs of Benue state.

Jisalo noted: “Let me commend the management of the Trust Fund for successfully delivering 19 motorized boreholes across the nation within the shortest possible time; these noble projects in water and sanitation will no doubt bring access to clean portable water closer to the beneficiaries, curb the spread of diseases, and improve the health of the benefiting communities.”

He said the lottery has huge potential both as a wealth generator and its impact on the growth of the economy therefore Government was going to strengthen lottery legislation.

He noted: “Therefore, the government is committed to putting policies meant to automate revenue collections, repealing the National Lottery Act (NLA), 2005 with the National Gaming Act, in order to accommodate the growing dynamism of lottery business in the country and help steer the industry to international best practices for improved returns to good causes and interventions across the country.”

The Minister appealed to the beneficiaries to own the projects and protect same for improved sanitation and hygiene.

Earlier in his welcome address, Bello Maigari, Executive Secretary/CEO said they have constructed a total of 15 motorized boreholes in 15 select Communities across Benue State funded by the National Lottery Trust Fund.

Maigari said all 15 motorised boreholes were completed and will be commissioned and handed over for public use.

He congratulated the 15 benefiting communities of this phase of the programme and also reaffirmed their commitment to the continuation of this laudable programme until every community in dire need of potable water supply across the six geo-political zones of the country is reached.

He noted: “The World Bank estimates that 70 million Nigerians lack access to safe drinking water. Nigeria has abundant water resources, but poor water management practices and inadequate infrastructure render most unfit for human consumption.

“This knowledge has further consolidated the agency’s initiative to provide the basic infrastructure needed to strengthen access to clean portable water which will in turn curb the spread of diseases and improve good health and wellbeing of the benefiting communities.”

Speaking to the representative of the late JS Tarka family, Mr Moses Tarka, who is also the eldest son of Tarka Nanchi, said water remained their greatest challenge within the area.

Tarka said that before the construction of the motorised borehole they usually their people trek about two to three kilometres to access water that was not even clean.

He said with the construction of the borehole the whole area now has access to clean water and commended the Federal Government for remembering them.

Also, the APC woman leader of Tarka Local Government Area Mrs Grace Igbudu commended Sen George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) for facilitating the project in the area.

Ex-agitators to Tinubu: probe alleged upfront sales of crude oil in Buhari’s administration

Niger Delta ex-agitators have called on President Bola Tinubu to probe the allegations that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari sold crude oil upfront and took away the money.

The National Secretary, First Phase Ex-Agitators, Nature Dumale, insisted that Tinubu should investigate the allegation that crude oil was sold three years in advance shortly before he took over the mantle of leadership.

Dumale in a statement at the weekend said the development was part of the reason for the foreign exchange crisis and the worsening inflation in the country.

He said if President Tinubu failed to probe the allegation, they would send a petition to the International Court of Justice to come to the rescue of the people.

He said: “We want President Tinubu to investigate the NNPCL and the oil and gas sector. Why did the last administration sell petroleum products upfront and take the money away? Why did they leave Nigeria indebted? It is affecting our foreign exchange and that is why we are having a dollar crisis.

“We are calling on President Tinubu to do the needful because Nigerians are behind him. He needs to set a track record and he needs to do something that Nigerians will remember him. He needs to call these people to order.

“The allegation is everywhere that former President Buhari sold crude oil three years ahead of time. Was Buhari aware of this? Or was it done by the cabal around him? People are dying every day because of the rising inflation. If nothing is done, we will write to the International Court of Justice because this is the height of injustice against our people”.

“Nigerian foreign exchange is experiencing a crisis. It means that despite the crude oil we are selling outside the country, there is no dollar coming in. We must rise up and take responsibility especially those saddled with the responsibility of leadership”.

Dumale also appealed to Tinubu to unveil the identities of all politicians, corporate organisations, and contractors indicted in the forensic audit report of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He said such a report developed with billions of Niger Delta money should not be swept under the carpet adding that not prosecuting indicted persons would only aid and abet corruption in the country.

He said: “There is a forensic audit report carried out by NDDC. Billions of naira were spent to develop the report. Politicians and businessmen were indicted in that report. Up till now, they have not brought anybody to book. How will people be afraid and why will people not continue to loot the treasure of the country?  How will people not continue to amass wealth that they and their sixth generation cannot use? That is why we need to stop it”.
