Tinubu orders massive rehabilitation of roads

President Bola Tinubu has ordered a massive rehabilitation of dilapidated roads across the country, it emerged on Monday.

The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi said President Tinubu is aware of the state of the Nigerian road infrastructure which he inherited on May 29, 2023, saying that he has directed that rehabilitation work commence immediately on the roads for easier and smoother movement of men and goods to save quality man hour lost to the poor state of the roads.

Some of the roads include the Makurdi-Nsukka 9th Mile Road, East West Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Benin bypass road, collapsed bridges of Enugu- Port Harcourt road, collapsed bridges of Shandam-Plateau State, Abuja-Kaduna- Zaria-Kano road and Gombe- Bauchi among several others.

Umahi, in a statement on Monday noted that despite inheriting N6 trillion deficit in road infrastructure, President Tinubu is not complaining but rather determined to confront the challenge headlong.

He said besides practical steps taken since assumption of office in May, President Tinubu has approved a 2023 Supplementary budget of ₦300b for the Ministry of Works comprising ₦100b for immediate palliative works in 36 States and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and ₦200b for continuation of most of the inherited ongoing projects and very few new but critical road projects.

According to him, the President has not only given specific directives to the Ministry on how to accomplish the execution of the project within the given time frame, but he has also encouraged the public to perform their civic responsibility by following their money through supervision of the projects with appropriate feedback to the government.

He said: “Without prejudice to all the good efforts of the past administration on road infrastructure development which they tackled within the limit of their resources, the work to be done to change the ugly state of our roads is quite enormous.

“Mr. President is not complaining of the challenges he inherited in nearly all sectors of the economy, especially as it concerns our road infrastructure, but he is quite courageous as he had promised to tackle the problems head-on which he has started to do not minding the debt burden inherited especially the funding gap of over ₦6 trillion from most of the inherited on-going road projects.

“Mr. President has since reeled out plans of commitment, consistence, and innovations towards actualizing a sustainable road infrastructure development throughout the country.

“He has just approved a 2023 Supplementary budget of ₦300B for the Ministry of Works comprising of ₦100B for immediate palliative works in 36 States and FCT and ₦200B for the continuation of most of the inherited ongoing projects and very few new but critical road projects.

“Mr. President has directed that works in those palliative projects must commence before 1st December 2023, while observing all due process.

“On the sections being frequently complained of by the public in all regions of the North and South of the country, Mr. President has equally isolated them and directed immediate actions on them and indeed work has started on all such roads”.

Ushering in a new era of innovative road construction, Umahi is enlisting the public’s help, urging Nigerians to actively participate in supervising projects and providing constructive feedback, saying, “The public can crosscheck our claims and report back to us

“The engagements of the Federal Ministry of Works will not be limited to these isolatedly reported cases but shall be holistic in our approach through these approved palliative measures and the interventions of FERMA in all the 36 States and FCT also.

“The public is hereby requested to assist the Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA by supervising the contractors that will be engaged in these palliative works and indeed all ongoing projects of the Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA.

“It is the right of every Nigerian to have value for their money deployed to the road infrastructure sector and therefore must show both interest and passion in all the ongoing projects by the Federal Ministry of Works and FERMA, and indeed all projects of the Federal, State and Local governments.

“All poorly constructed roads should be photographed and reported immediately to the following contacts:

08030986263, 08037086137, or 08106423197; showing the name of the contractor, the location and type of contract and defects observed.

“The Federal Ministry of Works will document such reports, verify and take effective action to correct such infractions.

“The Federal Ministry of Works shall also periodically recognize publicly those who made such reports that are genuine in a public engagement forum to be hosted quarterly by

the Federal Ministry of Works and will sanction such erring contractors publicly too”.

Saying that the Ministry is gearing up for a revolutionary change in project supervision, effective December 1, 2023, the Minister warned, “All concerned are HEREBY put on NOTICE as the Ministry will not spare anyone found culpable in his or her assignment.

  • ‘Tinubu’s reforms ‘ll resuscitate real estate’

‘Tinubu’s reforms ‘ll resuscitate real estate’

Experts in the real estate sector have expressed optimism that when ongoing reforms of President Bola Tinubu start yielding dividends, its impacts would be felt by every sector of the economy, including the built environment.

Reforms such as stable interest rate, reliable foreign exchange (forex) regime and availability, homeland security and congenial business operating environment, they believe, would rejuvenate the economy and cascade to the real estate sector.

Speaking in Lagos at the West African Property Investment (WAPI) summit, organised by African Property Investment (API), Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication at Knight Frank, Nigeria, Lanre Sonubi, said stable interest rates are needed for the real estate sector to deliver properties at a reasonable rate and manage them effectively. Unfortunately, the current inflation situation in Nigeria is expected to continue until at least the end of 2025.

According to him, the sector cannot thrive under inflationary pressures, but it is affected by inflation through factors such as building materials and labour costs.

He said the acceptability of real estate investment trust (REIT) in the country is predicated on the trust being sold to investors.

“There is a need for education about how trust works in managing investments because it also goes hand in hand with sustainability and succession planning.”

Listing real estate businesses on the Nigerian Stock Exchange can be volatile, but it offers opportunities for raising funds and increasing the attractiveness of the business to investors,” Sonubi said.

Also speaking, Head of Real Estate for West Africa at Stanbic IBTC, Tola Akinhanmi, said the ability of the real estate market to withstand macro and micro headwinds has led to sustained growth across the sector and into emerging asset classes.

“As of today, I think the real estate sector has remained resilient. It is an industry that has been impacted by the macroeconomic environment. We all know how the economy has evolved this year, with inflation rising, with exchange rate volatility, with interest rates as well, which is quite key to how these assets are funded, and how that has also risen.

“But our perspective is that, firstly, the asset class is long term. It provides the much-needed business infrastructure to support people’s businesses, how people live, how people work and how people play.

“So, given the long term nature of the asset class, it is expected to be resilient through different economic cycles. So what we do at Stanbic IBTC Bank is work with our sponsors, understanding the assets, and structuring those solutions that allow the assets to stabilize and continue to be relevant in providing basic infrastructure and ensuring that.”

On the challenge occasioned by government ownership of land, he said the government could play a role in creating access to land and investing in infrastructure to support real estate development.

“Land availability and infrastructure expansion are key factors in reducing the housing deficit and opening up new areas for development,” he said.

Akinhanmi stressed the need to strengthen capital liquidity for sustaninable growth and sophistication in the sector.

“A key impediment to growth remains capital. While we’ve witnessed growth in offshore capital investments over the past decade, recent years have seen somewhat muted activity from a scale perspective. Liquidity in the asset class is crucial to unlocking further investment, necessitating a deepening of both institutional investors and developers to fully complete and optimize the investment cycle.”

One of the speakers, Projects and City Reports Lead at Estate Intel, Mr Oladapo Runsew, in an interview expressed optimism that next year will be better for the sector.

He said: “I think in 2024, things might ease up a bit because if we look at the statistics from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the real construction sector contribution to GDP (gross domestic product) actually increased in the last quarter.

“So, if we just continue on that positive path, I foresee that we’re going to have a balanced positive effect on the market.

“I would say it’s going to be positive and there’s nothing pointing that it’s going to be negative because construction must go on, development must go on regardless. People need houses to stay, investors need real estate to invest in. So it’s going to be balanced.”

Runsew stressed the need for collaboration. “There is a need for collaboration between construction industry participants and the government like the public and the private sector players collaborating to move the sector forward.

“I know there are plans for that happening but not as much on a very large scale as the demand needs right now. For example,   if we look at Lagos, we have a very large housing deficit. So, the developers need something on a much larger scale in order for them to meet this demand by ensuring they make the right margins for their business,” he said.

Director of Capital Market at JLL, Sandri Pepler, urged the government look at the management of pension funds since it currently formed the bulk of domestic capital.

“I think in terms of local investment, your biggest source of capital is your local pension funds and if you benchmark Nigeria pension funds activity in commercial property in relation to more developed markets, it is still far behind.

“So, local investment into commercial property in Nigeria requires regulatory changes to reflect best practices in other markets.

“The government needs to develop a real estate investment trust fund to handle large estates, office developments, retail centres, and large industrial distribution centres. The regulatory environment needs to be updated because that would create the much-needed liquidity for further development.

“Once someone develops one property, he needs liquidity to do the next development and the bottleneck is always from the local capital perspective.

“From the foreign direct investment, there are some micro issues that we are all aware of in Nigeria around foreign currency. And until that is resolved, the broader economic level in commercial real estate investment will not be resolved,” Pepler said in an interview.

Temilola Sonola of EDGE Green Buildings Market Transformation Programme at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) emphasized the need to go green in line with global campaign to halt activities that lead to climate change.

“What we would like to see happen in the Nigerian market when it comes to the built environment is that a lot more of the buildings are built green rather than brown building. And we are here to show developers how easy it is to go green and that it is not as expensive as they think.

“In going green, you probably need about three to five percent on top of your capital rather than 30 per cent in some cases. It is simple to build green and we have an app online that you can use to go green for your building. Simply put, it is recertification made easy for our built environment,” she said.

  • Tinubu will tackle Nigeria’sproblems – Umenzekwe

Tinubu will tackle Nigeria’sproblems – Umenzekwe

Chief Modestus Umenzekwe(Onwa-Achina) is one of the leading lights of the All Progressives Congress APC in the Southeast. He is an Anambra-born astute politician with enough capacity like President Tinubu. In this Interview with the Southeast Bureau Chief, NWANOSIKE ONU, and EMMA ELEKWA, the Igbo leader, talks about things that make President Bola Tinubu thick, his party, APC, and the way forward, Governor Chukwuma Soludo‘s government and the recent defection of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah from YPP to APC and of course, the politics of 2025 in Anambra state.
    Excerpts

As a member of the campaign council in Bayelsa, What’s your party doing to recapture some of the states you’ve lost to opposition parties in recent times?

You people like digging holes where there’s no land. In any contest, you must not win everything. The most important thing is that you performed and performed very well. Look at the three off-cycle elections we had – Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi, we were able to secure two, convincingly. Even that of Bayelsa you were referring to, we did very well. When you look at the results, the margin was not much; you’ll agree with me that we did well.

Besides, we’re still studying the entire results to be able to come up with our true position. Mark you; about two weeks before the election, we had a court order which was enough distractions. But thank God for the judiciary that saw the need to set aside the ruling of the lower court. That gave us some little distractions before we were able to reorganize, return, and perform very well within a space of one week.

As per what we’re doing to recapture the lost states, if there’s a lost state in the real sense of losing an election, I won’t tell you now, we’re still studying the whole situation, and very soon, our approach to those issues will come to limelight.

Recently, one of the political heavyweights in the State joined your party, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah. It’s been rumoured that the move was to contest the upcoming 2025 governorship election in the State. Are members of the party comfortable with the plans of a new entrant eyeing such an exalted office?

Every political party, irrespective of its size, needs membership, because party formation is about numbers and winning elections is about numbers. So Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah joining us is a welcome development. Our doors are always open and I believe that before 2025, many heavyweights will defect to the APC for one particular interest or the other, all in the name of providing services to the state, nation, and mankind. After all, governance is about providing services. Ifeanyi Ubah has the right to contest for any position as well as you asking me this question and I answering the question.

People should not be rattled because he defected to APC. It’s his right. If he wants to contest, nobody can stop him. Whether Soludo is doing well or not, it’s his right. It’s left for the people to decide whom to follow and where to follow. I don’t think it’s something that will give us a headache. And if the incumbent is struggling to retain power, it’s also a welcome development. I reserve further comments, as the years go by, we’ll come up with the final conclusion. Who knows whether you that is asking me these questions will contest.

Soludo has been battling with criticisms recently. While some believe he is doing well, others, especially the opposition, seem to disagree. In your own thinking as APC chieftains, how do you access him?

Thank you so much. In governance, you must not get everything right or wrong. It depends on the angle you’re assessing a leader. Yes, he’s having a lot of running battles with several interest groups. But his efforts are not yet enough. We’re waiting for him to draw a conclusion based on what he said, that he should be given between now and next year to present his score card, and we’re waiting for him.

However, irrespective of the party affiliations, I thank him so much for what he has done so far on road infrastructure be cause my town Achina is benefiting. You know, the past administrations substantially forgot about my town. Remember the last time you came here, you parked your vehicle far away and I was crying. For you to come to my house, using a caterpillar as your private vehicle, was very embarrassing. But today, inasmuch as the road has not been properly done, at least it is passable. For the fact that my town benefitted, all these while the previous administrations didn’t remember us. Peter Obi tried to some extent, passing through Achina. But the heart of the town didn’t benefit. The man who would have given us what we wanted, unfortunately, his administration didn’t last long… that’s Sen. Chris Ngige, the man who opened up governance in Anambra State. The man told us that even with little resources, we can achieve a lot. But unfortunately, that administration didn’t last. Today, Soludo is on the saddle. There’s a place we call Ugwu nganga, about five persons have died there, but he has filled those holes. We believe that in no distant time, he will tar the roads completely, and even tar this one passing through my house because it’s the only road that saves this town. To that extent, he’s doing well. But that’s not enough to justify his working hard to retain power. That’s also not enough to say that another person cannot contest. He must be on his toes to retain his seat if he so desires. I want to congratulate Ifeanyi Ubah if he’s interested in contesting for the office of Governor of the State. It’s a welcome development. If he wins, it’s my party that wins and I will be very glad. But then, it must not be a do-or-die affair.

Why is it that Ndigbo are not embracing your party despite the noise of the opposition, including the one they call movement?

What do you mean by noise? That word noise is irritating, what do you mean by noise and who is making it? You know I’m not a harmful politician; there are words I don’t like using, either on the part of the opposition or that of the ruling party. So, none of them are making noise. They are just expressing their feelings and trying to protect their interests.

Read Also: How Tinubu brokered Ondo political truce – Source

Coming to the one you referred to as a movement, what do you mean by that? It’s either you are in a party or not. Those borrowed languages by non-state actors are those who don’t know what politics is all about. It’s unfortunate, I don’t subscribe to them. As far as this country is concerned, it’s either you ascend the office through a political party or you remain in your house. So, some of these words we invent are alien to us. They’re not what our forefathers like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Awolowo, Saduana of Sokoto, and Tafawa Balewa taught us.

But these days, we keep on bringing up all manner of phrases to suit our situations. That’s why we run into a lot of crises. Like today, some of the Journalists don’t align themselves to the rules of engagement. You see them publishing all manner of ‘rubbish’ without verification. It’s unfortunate and painful. We must go back to the roots.

I think they also refer to the movement as a third force that can be used to topple the government.

Whenever you’re talking about democracy, you don’t talk about force. The word force is alien. We’re talking about democracy in a free society where one can express his opinion without being harassed. That’s why I must continue to congratulate our president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, irrespective of feelings. He loves democracy and deserves to be the president of the country.

He nearly wasted his life trying to push out the military. Today, we’re benefiting and those who never played a part are attacking him from every side. I’m not a Yoruba man and can never be one. I’m an Igbo, but I must give it to him. He worked for the presidency and built and developed people. He developed Lagos. That’s why we came out to say that he has to lead us this time to defend the democracy he fought for and correct the anomaly.

So, the word force remains with the military, but peace and normalcy remain with the diplomats and democratic principles which we’ve been practicing unbroken since 1999.

If Mr. President has what it takes to rule this country, why is the opposition not happy and still attacking him?

Let me ask you a question, have you seen any tree, mango, orange, or pear and what have you, standing without fruits and people going to it? It’s only a tree with fruits, edible ones for that matter that people attack in order to pluck. It’s a contest. I don’t see all these things as attacks, but a way many deploy to get him in order to reap from the wealth of his governance and experience.

So Asiwaju is a good tree that bears fruits. Everybody is scrambling to get his own share, including you, me, and the opposition. He promised to form a government of national unity and he has kept to it. Look at his appointments, from all political parties, even from the opposition. And no party has threatened to suspend any of its members because they’re working in Asiwaju’s government. So don’t you see that what you call oppositions are people talking and giving their ideas on areas of emphasis in order to get the country right? Remember he said, I prepared for these things, I saw them coming, I welcome them and I’ll contain them. So those things are neither here nor there. But if there’s any ill feeling among them, go and tell them that those ill feelings are dead on arrival.

But with all these, Ndigbo are still skeptical about joining APC, why?

Who said so? Am I not an Igbo man from Achina in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State? And a major financier of the party in this community. I’ve never joined PDP, APGA, or any other party. I’m an Igbo man. There are so many people like me in this area. Let me ask you, do all Igbo people embrace PDP, APGA, and LP? So Igbo people embrace APC seriously. Look at what happened in Imo state, 27/27 in the recently concluded governorship election. Imo State is it Yoruba? Look at what Hope Uzodimma has been able to achieve there. Is it easy to secure 27/27? Look at what he did during the presidential election. There are people who voted for Asiwaju during the election in Imo state, are they not Igbo? At least, I personally voted for him, the same with my close allies. Five to ten percent of votes he garnered from the zone are they Hausa votes? And if he’s providing infrastructure, will he consider who and who voted for him? When he is constructing roads and providing electricity, he’s doing it for everybody. Have you asked why he gave David Umahi Works Ministry to manage? One of the best Ministries you can think of. So I disagree with you that Igbo people don’t embrace APC and any person saying otherwise will fall out with me.

Despite giving Umahi Works Ministry, Ndigbo are still complaining about lopsided appointments against them,  are you comfortable with such?

I’m not saying that Asiwaju is the best person ever, but in this country, if somebody hates you, even if you dash him your wife, he will still hate you. He is still giving appointments, he has just started. I don’t want to be talking about that now. He had described the government as an elephant with so many parts to share. So I can’t start now to criticize him until he has given up to 90 percent of his appointments. But I must commend him for those he has given to Ndigbo so far. An APGA chieftain a few weeks ago, argued that Tinubu will surprise Nigerians soon the way  Sen. Ngige did in his  time in Anambra, are you of the same view?

How old is Asiwaju Tinubu’s government? Can you assess in totality what your six-month-old child will be able to do? Are you God? But let me tell you, taking into consideration what he passed through to ascend the throne, I believe he will do well. When you look at his track records, from NADECO to the time he returned from self-exile, contested and won the senate, and from there he contested and won the governor of Lagos State and changed the structure of Lagos for the better. Despite the fact that he was a lone governor who had a running battle with the then federal government led by President Obasanjo.

He remained in Lagos and started capturing other Southwestern areas and was able to gather them together. As if that was not enough, he fought for the formation of APC and ensured APC defeated the government of Goodluck Jonathan. Still, he didn’t bother, because he knew the time to cut his onions. From there, he declared his interest to run for the presidency. People started throwing all manner of banters and stones here and there. They came up with his certificate, health, and other frivolous, unfounded, and unsubstantiated allegations.

He crushed all of them. So many people bought forms to contest. They came to the primary, many started stepping down. Some even cried on the stage that day. That one gone, he went into campaign, a very rigorous one for that matter. The same day he visited Anambra was the same day he went to Bayelsa. After that campaign, he traveled to rest. The news all over the country from the opposition was that he was dead. That he’s not standing and is blind. All manner of useless and nonsense speculations. I wrote and warned people not to make a mockery of anyone as a result of his or her health. It’s very dangerous. Eventually, he returned and went into the election proper and won the election convincingly.

Oppositions said no, and went to court, we defeated them at the Court of Appeal. They went to the Supreme Court, he floored them there. And you’re asking me whether he will perform.

With all these track records, don’t you believe that if God has helped him surmount all these hurdles, he’ll also surmount others facing him as presidentDon’t you think Mr. President was able to achieve all those feats because he was younger?

In the bible, Noah built an ark that saved those who did the will of God. He did that when he was around 120 years or so. And he even did that manually. So if Noah was able to build an ark at his age, why can’t Asiwaju do something better, now that he has not even reached 80 years? Besides, the PDP ruled this country for 16 years, I’ve been saying this and I will keep saying it… APC should rule for 16 years before we can draw comparisons. We’ve just done 8 years. It’s 8 years remaining. That’s fair and equity.

Some say APC has not been able to win the Anambra governorship because of a leadership crisis in the party, how true?

I totally agree that there’s a leadership crisis in Anambra APC. We’re doing everything to resolve it. I won’t discuss it because such things are not discussed on the pages of newspapers. I don’t even know whether the person asking me this question is a mole. We have problems, no doubt. But that’s a family matter which we’re handling internally. So, it doesn’t concern anyone. All I know is that we’ll come out stronger any moment from now.

    • APC stakeholders divided on outcome of president’s intervention

Details of how President Bola Tinubu calmed the political storm in Ondo State have emerged, as he was said to have refused any resolution that would displace recuperating Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

President Tinubu had, late on Friday, waded into the months-long crisis between factions loyal to the Governor Akeredolu and his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and successfully achieved an amicable resolution.

The feat followed marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers in Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja.

Governor Akeredolu, who has been in Ibadan since he returned from a medical treatment abroad, was not physically present at the meeting that lasted more than six hours at the State House and extended into late Friday night

According to a statement issued on Saturday morning by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect. ⁣

This means that Governor Akeredolu remains the chief executive of the state, Aiyedatiwa remains the deputy governor while members of the State Executive Council will continue in their respective duties even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State remains intact.

Shedding more light on how President Tinubu managed to get all sides to buy into the peace deal, a member of the National Assembly, who was in the know of proceedings at the long-drawn meeting but asked not to be named, said the President made fair propositions.

According to him, the President said he would not be part of any arrangement that would recognise the deputy governor as acting governor while Governor Akeredolu is alive.

He said: “The President insisted that he would not accede to the deputy governor becoming the acting governor as long as Aketi (Akeredolu) lives.

“He asked for a halt of the impeachment process, and the deputy governor was asked to return home and perform his duties.

“A three-man committee, comprising the SSG, party chairman and Speaker was appointed to monitor the activities of the deputy governor.

“The President also said the party EXCO in the state as well as the cabinet should remain intact.”.

On his part, Aiyedatiwa, who was said to have declared his willingness to maintain the status quo and unite all the factions, was quoted as saying: “I want to say that I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us. And I want to say that with no offence, no guile in my mind whatsoever.

“All that has happened is politics. Impeachment is part of politics. If you survive it, it is also politics. It has come. I’ve survived it, and every other thing is in the past. ⁣

“It is one big family and our father has intervened to bring all the children together to remain under the same family, and with the position that I occupy, I will carry every one of you along in every decision that needs to be taken. And in everything that we do, we will work together; the executive and the legislature will work together to ensure that governance is on the right track.”

The Deputy Governor was also said to have pleaded with all members of the State Executive Council to rally around the Governor and himself to bring the dividends of democracy to the people of Ondo State. ⁣

“All the Executive Council members, I want to plead with all of you to cooperate with me, with the Governor, so that we can bring the dividends of democracy to our people.⁣

“We should respect one another regarding the offices we occupy and our age differences. So, it’s going to be mutual respect.

“And I want to assure the party structure that we will work together because the party is supreme. We will always give you your due respect,” the Deputy Governor further pledged.

Reading out details of the resolutions after the meeting, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, said: “Our resolution is that one, we shall embrace peace. Secondly, there would be no more dissolution of the cabinet and the Deputy Governor would maintain the status quo as far as the House of Assembly leadership is concerned.

“We will maintain the status quo as far as the party leadership in the state is concerned and maintain the status quo as far as the leadership of the State House of Assembly is concerned. “Thank you, Mr. President.”

On her part, the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, said: “Our father, the President, has taken the trouble to settle our rancour in Ondo State. We owe you all the gratitude, sir. We will not disappoint you.

“We have taken every word you said, and we are going home as one united family under the party, APC.” ⁣

In his remarks, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, expressed delight at the outcome of Friday’s late night deliberations, affirming that the party would remain a watchdog to ensure that the new commitments are adhered to.

“Today is my happiest moment. And I know sanity has come to Ondo State. So, on behalf of the teeming supporters of our party in the state, we appreciate our leader, Mr. President.

“The PDP has crumbled in the state. Virtually, they decamp every day. The only problem we have is the one you have solved for us today, and that problem has been resolved permanently,” Adetimehin stated.

Empower Aiyedatiwa as Acting Governor, Ondo APC leaders insist

In spite of President Tinubu’s intervention in the political crisis in Ondo State, some chieftains of the APC in the state insisted yesterday on the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, being empowered as Acting Governor in line with constitutional provisions.

The Ondo APC Progressives Stakeholders, at a meeting in Akure, said the prolonged absence of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has crippled the economy of the state.

A statement issued at the meeting and signed by its Chairman, Hon. Afe Olowookere and Secretary Hon. Raman Rotimi called on the House of Assembly to empower Aiyedatiwa to function as the Acting Governor.

The statement insisted that party supremacy must be entrenched to facilitate inclusion and mutual respect.

It said: “An all inclusive developmental agenda for socio- economic, industrial and cultural rebirth that will put the state in its rightful place should be designed by all parties and stakeholders to provide quality, sustainable economic and industrial development for the people.

“That APC party members should be allowed to participate and determine those to be appointed or elected into political and party offices.

“Elders and leaders of the party must be recognised and given their pride of place in the party rather than being neglected and ostracised by the party.

“The system of writing names of party executives and candidates without due process will be objected and resisted with all political and legal means possible.”

Stakeholders differ on outcome of intervention

Other stakeholders in Ondo State yesterday expressed divergent views on the outcome of President Tinubu’s intervention in the feud between Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his Deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Some leaders who spoke with our correspondent yesterday said they were yet to understand the ‘status quo’ that was to be maintained.

They said events in the coming days would determine if a truce was actually reached.

The Ondo Liberation Initiative (OLI) hailed President Tinubu for not allowing the situation to degenerate into bloodshed.

But the spokesman for the group, Mr. Johnson Alabi, said the resolution reached had not answered their demand on the whereabouts of Governor Akeredolu.

He said relevant sections of the constitution should be invoked should Akeredolu not resume after 90 days.

The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State described the outcome of the meeting as a “mere window dressing”, saying it was not yet uhuru as long as “Akeredolu remains in hiding”.

Spokesman for the Ondo PDP, Kennedy Peretei, in a statement, said supporters of both Akeredolu and Aiyedatiwa interpreted the resolutions as being in their favour.

He said: “Mrs Betty Akeredolu celebrated the resolutions on her verified X-handle as ‘Hottest Breafast to last everybody till 2025’. To Aiyedatiwa’s supporters, their worries about impeachment are over.

“Let us pray that, the Presidential intervention will not go the way of the Bello Masari Reconciliation Committee set up by APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. After several trips to Abuja at taxpayers’ expense, both parties returned to court despite promises to withdraw all cases.

“From what we have read about the outcome, Tinubu’s intervention is a mere window dressing.

“Out of respect for his office, the impeachment of the Deputy Governor will no longer see daylight.

“But as long as Akeredolu remains in hiding, it is not yet Uhuru; the cat and mouse race will still continue.

“The siege is not yet over.”

The Owo is One Association was also divided as Mr. Olushina Fatai Lawal carpeted Chief Akin Aruwajoye rooted for Aiyedatiwa to be declared the Acting Governor pending the time Governor Akeredolu would fully recover from his ailment.

Lawal said Akeredolu was still attending to files and that the state was moving forward under his leadership.

“On Aketi’s issue, Ogbeni Oja has no right to speak on behalf of the Owo people. Owo people are proud of Aketi and we will continue to dissociate ourselves from any selfish leader who will join external forces to humiliate Aketi.”

The Ogwagbeminuyi of Owo Kingdom, Dr Soji Ehinlanwo, praised President Tinubu for providing an even-handed resolution to the political crisis in the state.

He urged all stakeholders to embrace the terms of the resolution in good faith and focus on governance without any malice.
