No more strike in varsities, Tinubu assures

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that his administration would take all necessary actions to ensure Nigeria universities do not embark on strike actions again.

President Tinubu said the federal government was willing to establish synergy with all the academic unions within universities in the country as well as exhaust all avenues for dialogue before any strike action.

Speaking at the 33rd convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, President Tinubu expressed hope that the cooperation of the unions with the federal government would ensure the needed educational development in the country.

Tinubu, who was represented by a former President of West Africa College of Surgeon, Prof. King-David Terna Yawe, said the synergy would help to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility on all campuses.

The President said his administration was committed to tackling all challenges confronting the education sector in the country and to reposition the sector.

“I would like to enjoin all the unions in our universities to cooperate with the government in order to deliver the needed development by ensuring an atmosphere of peace and tranquility on our campuses.

“On our part, we will ensure that motivational activities are put in place to ensure improved productivity. Reciprocal actions would be expected from our universities as government works hard to raise the bar for conducive teaching and learning environment.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. Dialogue, patience, and positive engagements are better means of achieving results over strike actions. Industrial disharmony does nothing but to disrupt life, waste time and elongate academic calendar.

“Therefore, all avenues for dialogue must be explored and exhausted before strike actions are considered, and as the last resort.”

On the students loan, he said: “This Act will enable indigent students in all our tertiary institutions have access to interest-free loans, which they would pay back at their convenience in future when they are gainfully employed.

“Under my watch and as I have said in my manifesto, no student will drop out of school as a result of inability to pay school charges.

“My government would not shirk its responsibilities in this regard. We will ensure that educational institutions get their dues in order to perform their statutory duties optimally.”

The Vice Chancellor of the school, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, said a total of 195 out of the 3,491 outgoing students graduated with First Class. These, he said, include 2,295 male and 1,196 female.

Emulate Weah, congratulate Tinubu, Labour party faction urges Obi, Atiku

The Lamidi Apapa-led Labour Party (LP) faction has asked the former presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) and Labour Party (LP) Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to emulate the President of Liberia, George Weah and congratulate President Bola Tinubu.

The Liberian President lost his re-election bid to opposition leader Joseph Boakai and conceded defeat.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, on Saturday in Abuja, the party said it expected Obi and Atiku to have buried the hatchet and join hands with the president in delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement reads: “The Liberian Presidential Election, though still on as the electoral umpire is yet to declare the winner of the election, the results so far have compelled the incumbent President George Weah to congratulate the opposition candidate, Boakai, who is obviously the winner.

“The Labour Party believed that it’s instructive that elections like any competition would produce the winner and loser. This is why the behaviour and reaction of President George Weah even before the official announcement of the results of the presidential election in Liberia to his loss should be commended and African leaders should emulate.

“So far, Boalai is leading with over 28000 votes leaving a polling unit where voting has not commenced and 20 polling units results are under scrutiny. Whatever comes from the above would not in any way affect the results so far collated.

“Nigerian leaders should emulate this spirit of sportsmanship. Once both the winners and losers have explored all the available processes and opportunities provided by the laws and constitution, the winners should be magnanimous in victory and the losers should be sportsmen and return to the drawing table for the next election.

“Any election should not be taken as do or die affairs. It should not be a war, a battle. We need ourselves.

“President George Weah of Liberia again has shown like Former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari that incumbency is not a tool to be used to rig election and opposition should not be intimidated by incumbency.

“Electorate is the decider. Political parties compete for power by directing all their slogans, programmes and attention to the electorate. The people have spoken in Republic of Liberia. President George Weah has accepted the decision of the Liberian voters.

“The time is ripe for former Vice-president and PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and former Governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of LP, Mr. Peter Obi to congratulate the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after the former had explored all the opportunities availed by the Constitution and the Electoral Law.

and the incumbent who in spite of losing his second term as President yesterday did not wait for anyone before he congratulated the winner.

“As a responsible leader, the former President Goodluck Jonathan also did the same like George Weah, and today he is being reckoned with as a great pillar of democracy.

“The Labour Party therefore appealed to Obi’ and Atiku to support the administration and have faith in ongoing reforms.

“We had expected the duo to have buried the hatchet and join hands with the president in delivering the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The Labour Party believed that the sanctity of the people’s will, as expressed at the polls, had prevailed immediately the Supreme Court delivered it’s verdict, so politics should have ended with that pronouncement.

”With the apex court ruling affirming the legitimacy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, electoral litigation has come to an end; Peter Obi should stop whipping a dead horse and what else does he want anyway.

“Peter Obi and Atiku should exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship and congratulate the president and join hands with him to revamp the economy and deliver dividends of democracy to Nigerians.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has said President Bola Tinubu was working towards propelling the nation towards a sustained progressive economy and job creation.

Onyejeocha stated this at a meeting with state coordinators and officials of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) with the theme: “Developing a Roadmap for the NDE within the framework of the Renewed Hope Agenda” in Abuja.

The Minister said that the current administration has weaved its employment policy around skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development for blue collar jobs and that the NDE was a catalyst in the attainment of the President’s desire to lift 50 million Nigerians out of poverty.

She called on the NDE to strengthen strategic initiatives to create more decent jobs and to be ready to translate the articulated policies of government into tangible realities.

The Minister also charged the NDE to focus on the youth, women, and vulnerable groups to build the core skills needed for national revival, growth, and prosperity.

Tinubu urges Nigerians to unite against terrorism

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday urged Nigerians to stand united in the fight against terrorism and work for global peace and security.

The President made the appeal in Abuja at a book launch on “Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in Northeast Nigeria: Emerging Perspectives and the Imperative of Airpower.”

The book was a research study sponsored by the Nigerian Airforce in collaboration with Babcock University.

“Together, let us stand united against terrorism and work towards a future where peace, security and prosperity prevails in the Northeast region of Nigeria, in Nigeria and the global community,” Tinubu said in his speech read by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio who represented the President to formally unveil the book.

Tinubu said the book “represents a significant contribution to the understanding of one of the most pressing challenges of our time, the fight against terrorism.”

The President said the Northeast region of Nigeria had been grappling with the scourge of terrorism far too long, adding that the brutal attacks committed by extremist groups had inflicted immense suffering upon very innocent people of that region and Nigeria as a whole.

“But amidst this darkness, there is hope. Hope that with true knowledge, understanding and the collective efforts of all stakeholders, we can overcome these challenges and restore peace and stability to the region and by implication to Nigeria,” the President said.

He said the book, which was authored by experts who had dedicated their lives to studying and analysing the complexity of terrorism and counter-terrorism offered unique insights and perspectives.

“It delves into the root cause of terrorism in the Northeast region, examines the evolving tactics and strategies employed by extremist groups and explores the roles of airpower in combating this menace.

“Airpower has emerged as a critical component in modern warfare and its significance in counter terrorism operations cannot be overestimated.

“The use of air assets such as drones, surveillance aircrafts and precision weapons has proven instrumental in gathering intelligence, disrupting terrorists’ networks and providing support to ground forces.

“The launch of this book is not just an academic exercise. It is a call to action. It serves as a reminder that we have a shared responsibility to fight against terrorism and protect the lives and liberty of our fellow citizens.

“By fostering partnership and fostering a deeper understanding of the complexity of terrorism, we can enhance our collective efforts to address this threat comprehensively.

“I will like to extend my appreciation to the authors for their tireless efforts in producing this remarkable book.

“Their dedication to shedding light on the challenges faced in the Northeast and their commitment to finding solutions is very highly commendable,” the President said.

ASUU had in a statement signed by its national president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, explained that universities were not revenue-generating agencies, saying that the obligatory fees paid by students were to provide the necessary tools for them to be properly educated.

Osodeke noted that the policy will impoverish the university system.

Also, the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities had written a protest letter to the Federal Government, demanding that the government rescind the plan, adding that the government could not be demanding 40 percent of varsities IGR when it had refused to grant them autonomy.

To address the concerns raised, the President noted that the policy implementation is ill-timed.

He said: “The 40 percent IGR automatic deduction policy stands cancelled. This is not the best time for such a policy since our universities are struggling.”
