“We should also celebrate the tech entrepreneurs that have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the backbone that we have invested in is being converted to value for our country.

“Today, Nigeria is the top destination for technology startups capital in Africa with about $5 million invested in tech startups in the continent last year, we took 20 per cent of that total investment just to Nigeria.

  • President Tinubu and the ‘Noah effect’

President Tinubu and the ‘Noah effect’

    • By: Prince Charles Dickson

Sir: The “Noah Effect” symbolises the need for leaders to prepare, plan, and construct their proverbial Ark—a blueprint for a better, more stable future. Just as Noah’s Ark was a vessel of salvation, a new administration must catalyse positive change and progress.

Renewed Hope needs to start to take shape, and as it is today, that is not happening. Nigerians are tired of roadmaps; they want to be on the road and not on the map. Bola Tinubu as a president needs to start defining his place in history; he needs to start walking all the talk. He needs to kick-start the process.

I am part of the school of thought that believes that he is not the reason why we are where we are today; I do not lay on his footpath the rot that Nigeria has become in terms of the kwashiorkor of the last 60 years.

However in my admonishment to Mr. President, I say with a clear conscience that he will be blamed for the failed opportunities of the present; not only will he be accused, but he may make Muhammadu Buhari a star if his stewardship does not produce profound results

Much like Noah, a new administration faces the daunting task of navigating through turbulent and uncertain waters. When a new government comes into power, it often inherits a myriad of challenges and crises. These challenges can be likened to the floodwaters that Noah had to overcome. In the face of adversity, Noah displayed determination, foresight, and an unwavering commitment to a greater purpose.

Similarly, a new administration must exhibit qualities such as vision, leadership, and resilience. They must work tirelessly to steer the nation away from the storms of corruption, economic instability, social unrest, and other issues that threaten the well-being of the citizens.

President Tinubu needs to be told by his retinue of advisers peradventure he does not know already, that he is still presiding over a nation that has low expectations. Some BRT buses in Abuja; peace in Jos, Borno; a new parastatal, or commission, some reform here and there is all and promptly, youths can earnestly start seeking for another term for him!

In the end, the “Noah Effect” serves as a powerful reminder that, no matter how turbulent the waters may be, visionary and resilient leadership can guide a nation to calmer shores. For Nigeria, this means that the new administration should embark on a journey of change, reform, and transformation that ensures a better future for all.

  • Nigerian economy to bounce back soon, says President Tinubu

Nigerian economy to bounce back soon, says President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu said on Tuesday, October 24, that the Nigerian economy will soon bounce back despite the difficulties being experienced by Nigerians.

The president spoke while flagging off the two-day Green Economy Summit: ‘Sustainable Future: Harnessing Green Assets and Innovation for Niger State’s Prosperity’, organised by Niger State Government.

Represented by the minister of state for Agriculture and food security, Senator Abdullahi Sabi, the President gave an insight into the newly approved solid mineral development policy during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Monday.

He said: “To show the government’s commitment to the enthronement of a green economy, just yesterday (Monday) at the Federal Executive Council, a new solid mineral development policy was approved.

“And this policy will definitely align with and benefit the green economy that you have envisioned for Niger State because the policy is emphasizing removing all forms of illegality that are desecrating and destroying our environment.

“It also intends to ensure a new principle of resource-use efficiency while allowing people who want to operate legally to do so in the mining sector. And like His Excellency, the Governor said, Niger State is blessed with a number of mineral elements.

“I want to assure you that the President’s commitment to the enthronement of the green economy over the next couple of years, will find favour with the green economy vision you have for Niger state.”

“The government is fully aware of all the difficulties occasioned by some of the difficult decisions that have to be taken at this point in time. Very soon, we shall begin to reap the benefits of these tough decisions, as our economy will re-bounce back and for us food security which is his number one priority, will also begin to get the full attention it deserves,” Mr. President said.

In his address, Niger state Governor Mohammed Umar Bago said his administration has “produced its first Green Economy Blueprint, a strategic document outlining a visionary roadmap that will shape our development choices and steer our actions, in alignment with the precepts of sustainability.

He stated: “We are using this Summit to present a draft to stakeholders for their review and input, after which it shall be formally launched and applied in the preparation of our appropriation proposals for 2024 and beyond.

“This blueprint is a comprehensive guide that details our vision, objectives, strategies, and actions, designed to transform our state into a beacon of green prosperity that is environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and economically robust.

It spans across vital sectors, encompassing renewable energy, transportation, infrastructure, agriculture, inclusivity, and tourism. It lays out a detailed plan for sourcing financial support, technology transfer, capacity building, and fostering strategic partnerships in the realisation of our mission.

“This blueprint, in its entirety, is not just a document; it is a clarion call to collective action. It beckons the active engagement and cooperation of all stakeholders, including the government, private sector, civil society, academia, media, and our local communities. Innovative solutions, tailored to our unique context and needs, must be unearthed and harnessed,” he noted.

Speaking further on the blueprint, he said: “We aspire to create a state where its citizens enjoy access to fundamental social amenities and infrastructure that enhance the quality of life. These include top-tier healthcare, access to high-quality and inclusive education, safeguarded lives and property, assured food security, clean drinking water, affordable housing, recreational venues, and opportunities for sports and leisure.

“We envision a state with a sustainable economy, underpinned by substantial agricultural growth, investments in tourism, the utilization of renewable energy, the responsible extraction of solid minerals, fostering innovation, embracing cutting-edge technology, promoting diverse services, establishing free trade zones, cultivating industrial parks, and establishing economic cities as vital hubs for development and employment.

“Furthermore, our vision includes a state boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure, realised through a deliberate urban renewal strategy. This encompasses the development of quality road networks and efficient rail systems, modern urban transportation options, and advanced city surveillance systems.

“This vision aligns with our commitment to establishing a state built on the principles of good governance, characterized by equity, unwavering accountability, a proficient civil service, the maintenance of law and order, a thriving business environment, sound financial governance, optimized internal revenue generation, the application of technology for efficient governance, and inclusive governance and policymaking.”

On his part, former head of state, General Abubakar Abdulsalam applauded Governor Bago for providing quality leadership since he assumed office.

He noted: “Let me go back memory lane during the regime when Governor David Mark was here, I remember coming on a visit to find a policeman in front of my father’s house, he was given a ticket for not planting a tree in his house. I’m glad that Governor Bago is now retracing those steps and he’s trying to see that we annex our green economy in Niger State.

“I want to congratulate you for this effort. Like the other speakers have said certainly we need to do something to go back to a green economy. I want to commend you and wish you all the best as we discuss the importance of annexing the green economy.”

“The days of oil-driven economic growth are over. Our global progress in meeting the climate emergency is still too slow while the direction of travel is ambiguous.

“There is no long-term future for oil as net zero pledges already encompass a quarter of the global economy. Globally, we need to end our addiction to fossil fuels.”

The UN Deputy Secretary-General further said that Nigeria can be a trailblazer in the transition to clean and renewable sources if it invests in the green economy.

President Bola Tinubu in his address, reiterated his commitment to the enthronement of the green economy in the nation, disclosing the approval of a new mineral development policy that would remove all forms of illegalities that are destroying the environment.

Bago noted: “These catastrophic events, exacerbated by uncontrolled human action, cast a menacing shadow on our food security, public health, economic stability, and social harmony. Inaction is a luxury we cannot afford. We must stand resolutely and act now to safeguard our environment, securing a prosperous future for ourselves and the generations to come.

UPDATED: U.S court declines request to compel FBI, CIA, IRS, others to release documents on Tinubu

The United States District Court of the District of Columbia has refused a request by one Aaron Greenspan seeking to compel US security agencies to promptly release to him information, including documents relating to President Bola Tinubu.

Judge Beryl A. Howell, in a ruling on Monday, declined Greenspan’s request on the grounds that he failed to satisfy the relevant conditions for the grant of such a prayer for temporary relief, as contained in the emergency hearing motion, which he filed last Friday.

Greenspan had, in June this year. filed the civil suit, with number: 23 – 1816 under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), against the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys (EOUSA), Department of State (DOS), Federal Bureau of Investigation FBI), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)

He alleged that the defendants – EOUSA, DOS, FBI, IRS, DEA and the CIA violated the FOIA by “failing to issue determinations within the statutory deadline,” “failing] to conduct reasonable searches for records,” and “failing to produce records responsive to” his FOIA requests.

Greenspan had, in an FOIA request to the EOUSA, sought for “records from the Northern District of Illinois and/or Northern District of Indiana involving charging decisions for the following individuals – Bola Ahmed Tinubu (President of Nigeria as of 2/2023” and “Mueez Adegboyega Akande (deceased as of 11/16/2022.”

He claimed that EOUSA, in a letter denying his request, invoked FOIA Exemptions 6 and 7, which protect from disclosure of information that would constitute unwarranted invasions of personal privacy and information compiled for law enforcement purposes that may constitute an unwarranted invasion of the personal privacy of a third party.

A hearing was subsequently scheduled for October 31 for the defendants to present their responses.

Greenspan however, returned to the court on Friday to file the emergency motion, upon learning that the Nigerian Supreme Court will hear on October 23 the appeals by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP, Atiku Abubakar and that of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi against the September 6 judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), which affirmed President Tinubu’s victory in the last presidential election and dismissed the petitions by Atiku and Obi.

He told the court, among others, that his request for prompt release of the documents, even before the hearing scheduled for October 31 was because “the Nigerian Supreme Court will hear an appeal of a judicial tribunal’s decision confirming Mr. Tinubu as President of Nigeria on Monday, October 23, 2023.”

Greenspan claimed that the Nigerian Supreme Court deliberately moved the hearing of the appeals by Atiku and Obi to yesterday to render his suit before the U.S court nugatory, contending that the documents he requested for “would likely be directly relevant to the foreign proceedings in Nigeria.”

Judge Howell, in the ruling on Monday, held among others, that Greenspan failed to establish that he is likely to succeed on the merits; that he is likely to suffer irreparable harm if the preliminary relief he sought was not granted; that the balance of equities tips in his favour, and that the relief he seeks is in the public interest.

The judge, who also noted that Greenspan has not established that the purported documents and information he wants the court to compel the defendants to produce actually exist, further held that “neither a preliminary injunction nor a temporary restraining order is appropriate in this case.

“Given that the FOIA request is for records that, if any exist, may be of a highly sensitive and private nature, and that the subject of those documents – Bola A. Tinubu – has had no opportunity to protect his privacy interests in any such records, the balance of equities militates strongly in favour of denying this emergency motion.”

He held that the position of the law is that, in such a case, the plaintiff bears the burden of proving that he/she is likely to succeed on the merits of the case.

Judge Howell added: “In plaintiff’s underlying FOIA request and complaint, he seeks documents relating to purported federal investigations into the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“As previously noted, EOUSA originally denied the plaintiff’s FOIA request, invoking FOIA Exemptions 6 and 7(c), which protect information that would constitute unwarranted invasions of personal privacy and information compiled for law enforcement purposes that may constitute an unwarranted invasion of the personal privacy of a third party.

“Plaintiff has failed even to attempt to argue how his request may overcome those exemptions and achieve a likelihood of success on the merits. This failure to address this important factor in his emergency motion weighs strongly in favour of denying his motion.”

The judge also found that the plaintiff failed to demonstrate that he was going to suffer actual and real irreparable injury if the relief he sought was not granted, rather than a mere possibility or theoretical injury.

He added that the “plaintiff falls far short of satisfying this standard. He (plaintiff) has not supplied the court with any indication of a concrete, actual threat that he will suffer in the absence of an injunction. While his emergency motion states that a Nigerian Supreme Court hearing is scheduled to occur in the coming days, the plaintiff cites no injury he will suffer that is in any way traceable to the relief requested in this motion.

“Granting plaintiff’s emergency motion would essentially allow him to jump the line ahead of other requests deemed similarly time-sensitive under FOIA’s expedition standards. The inherent tradeoffs implicated in ordering an agency to produce records in a specific FOIA request ahead of others by granting a preliminary injunction thus, must be considered in evaluating the balance of the equities, and weigh heavily in favour of denying such injunctive relief.

“Plaintiff has not made any representation to the court that the balance of equities tips in his favour or that the granting of his motion would further the public interest. For the foregoing reasons, it is hereby ordered that the plaintiff’s emergency motion for a hearing to compel immediate document production is denied.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s lawyers have filed a motion before the court, seeking to be made a party to enable them to defend the President in the suit.
