Strip Atiku of national honours, CSOs tell Tinubu

Irked by what it termed unpatriotic act of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, a coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Political Parties for Good Governance (PPGG), has asked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strip him of the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

The groups argued that there was nothing honourable about Atiku for making unguarded and baseless allegations, adding that he has never subscribed to true democracy nor respected the rule of law.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Convener of the CSOs, Dr Lilian Ene Ogbole, also urged Nigerians to ignore the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, “for dragging the image of Nigeria in the mould.”

Ogbole said stripping Atiku will serve as a deterrent to others so that Nigerians can begin to henceforth attach some regard to the office of the President.

She also lambasted the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for questioning the identity of President Tinubu, describing it as childish, shameful and laughable.

“It keeps getting clearer that former vice president Atiku Abubakar is on a collision course with national interest and has never subscribed to true democracy nor respected the rule of law.

“These assertions were made even clearer when he revealed to the world during his over-hipped, baseless, and content-ridden world press conference, how he singlehandedly relinquished Lagos state to Asiwaju while they fraudulently took over other Southwestern states by hook and crook during the 2003 general election.

“This no doubt is a mockery of our collective sensibility as a people committed to the ideals of constitutional democracy.

“It truly beats our imagination how a man with a long history of electoral manipulation, habitual disrespect for constituted authority and serial election manipulator who will stop at nothing, whether moral or immoral, will shamelessly come to the public domain to accuse a true and descent democrat of attributes that are alien to him.

“It is common knowledge that most of the dirty characteristics that Atiku has falsely accused President Tinubu of are synonymous with his name and character as confirmed by his former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo who lacked words of expression to qualify Atiku’s lack of patriotism and decency.

“As stakeholders in the business of nation-building, we wish to use this medium to call on President Tinubu to utilise the authority conferred on him by the 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended to protect the image and interest of the country by stripping Atiku Abubakar Sadiq of the national honours of GCON.

“You will agree with us that a man with Atiku’s character is not honourable and does not deserve to keep the award that is meant for honourable men and women,” the coalition pleaded.

Ogbole added that; “stripping Atiku will also serve as a deterrent to others so that Nigerians can begin to henceforth attach some regard to the office of the President.”

On Obi, the coalition noted: “if Atiku’s press conference is aptly described as a face-saving gimmick, to capture power from the backdoor by weeping casual sentiments by fabricating and speculating lies that have been globally verified and completely buried forever, then Mr obi’s belated press conference over the same issue, is at best childish, shameful and laughable.

“It is rather inexplicable and hard to comprehend what manner of desperation we are dealing with, particularly Peter Obi’s desperate attempt to create all manners of doubts around the documents and personal information that Mr President submitted to INEC without a single proof of evidence to substantiate his claims.

“Rather than providing evidence to contradict President Tinubu’s submissions to INEC, Obi laughably requested the President to help him with evidence that will invalidate the certificates and information submitted to INEC.”

    • Projects to cost N217b

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved more than 260 road repairs across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Works Minister David Umahi announced this while addressing reporters after a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa yesterday in Abuja.

The minister, who said the emergency repairs would gulp about N217 billion, added that the President had approved more road interventions, including project upgrades.

He said President Tinubu had also approved the resurfacing of the Third Mainland Bridge, construction of Lekki Deep Seaport road, both in Lagos; re-construction of two collapsed bridges in Enugu, and reconstruction of two locations on the Onitsha-Owerri road.

Other roads approved for construction include the upgrading of the ongoing Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia road, and the dualisation of Lafia by-pass.

“I’ve always commended Mr. President for his deep interest in reinstating most of our roads in the country. Everyday, we get a lot of concerns from the public on the very deplorable situations of our roads. But there is no paper I brought in respect of this that Mr. President has not approved.

“Just yesterday, he approved over 260 road interventions across the 36 states and the FCT. You will recall that, last week, he approved a lot of emergency roads and bridge repairs. We have three bridges that collapsed on the Southwest roads that he approved for reconstruction immediately. We have the Shendam- Lafia that collapsed; we also have the approval for its repairs.

“We have about 17 points along the East-West Road that have been destroyed by flood. Mr. President has approved and released money for the immediate repairs. “Two bridges that collapsed in Enugu approved by Mr. President. The two locations on the Onitsha-Owerri Road, Mr. President approved its reconstruction. for Lokoja-Abuja Road, Mr. President approved the reconstruction.

“I can name them, apart from the 260 emergency repairs all over the country that are worth about N217 billion. So, I’m quite glad.

“This afternoon again, Mr. President approved upgrading of the Abuja-Keffi-Akwanga-Lafia road. Of course, it’s ongoing. But it’s a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the Chinese and we’re paying 15 per cent.

“Also, the construction of the Lafia bypass dualisation from Makurdi through Oturkpo, through Oboloafor, down to Ninth Mile. It’s a major one, but Mr. President has approved it. This is also being financed by the China EXIMBank; the Lafia-Keffi Road is also financed by Chinese EXIMBank.

“Then the Seventh AXA Road, Lekki Deep Seaport (access) in Lagos; you know the Lagos State government is building the deep seaport, meaning that all the cargoes that cannot berth at the existing ports in Lagos can now come to that location. That’s where the Dangote Refinery is located.”

“I saw thousands and thousands of well-established companies that are already installing their equipments there. It’s to be a huge free trade zone. So Mr President has approved that I should go ahead and sign MoU and that it should be programmed for priority in our business with the Chinese”, he said.

President Tinubu also approved the reconstitution of the Board of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), with the aim of speeding up the road maintenance nationwide.

“Let me also announced that Mr President approved the reconstitution of FERMA Board and this is very good for us, this is so that work can now get a bit more serious with FERMA in terms of very prompt maintenance of the roads” Uhahi disclosed.

BREAKING: Tinubu asks Supreme Court to dismiss Atiku’s appeal

President Bola Tinubu has said the claim that his credentials contained discrepancies was merely cooked up by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar.

Tinubu said Atiku resorted to cooking up allegations against him when he and the PDP failed to secure evidence to support their claim that he (Tinubu) was not qualified to have contested that last presidential election.

In his respondent’s brief in the appeal by Atiku and the PDP before the Supreme Court, Tinubu urged that the court dismiss the appeal, and affirm the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PDP) which upheld his election.

Tinubu said he was validly elected having polled the highest number of votes.

Stating that he was validly returned as the winner of the presidential poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Tinubu added that by statistics, he garnered one-quarter/25% of the total votes in 29 states of the federation.

He said Atiku and the PDP only managed to secure 25 percent of the total votes in 21 states of the federation, “as against the constitutional requirement of 24.7 states, which is the mathematical results of two-thirds of the 36 states of the federation and the FCT (making 37).”

Tinubu stated that having secured the highest number of valid votes cast and having fulfilled all constitutional requirements in that regard, INEC, had no option but to declare him as the winner of the presidential contest.

He added that Atiku and the PDP, being dissatisfied with the outcome of the election, on March 21, approached the PEPC “on trumped up allegations of non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, corrupt practices, non-scoring of the majority of lawful votes cast at the election and non-qualification of the respondent.”

Tinubu needs not reintroduce himself, says APC

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not need to reintroduce himself to Nigerians who voted for him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday.

The ruling party dismissed the call by the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the February 25 poll, Peter Obi, that he should reveal his identity to Nigerians.

The former Anambra State governor called on President Tinubu to speak out on his Chicago State University (CSU) academic record on a day the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC)’s Global Disinformation Team reported that there was no evidence that the president submitted a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the election.

The Chicago State University (CSU), on Atiku Abubakar ‘s request, has ordered by a court, release President Tinubu’s records.

The former vice president has sought the relive of the Supreme Court to tender those documents as fresh evidence in his appeal against the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) judgment, which dismissed his petition against Tinubu’s victory as “unmeritorious”.

Obi is also before the Supreme Court challenging the outcome of the PEPC judgment.

Obi, who through his party, had rejected Atiku’s call on him and another former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, to join him in disparaging President Tinubu, did an about turn yesterday.

He told reporters yesterday that President Tinubu should “tell Nigerians who he is,” adding that they deserved to know his true name and everything relating to his educational career.

He said only the president can put to rest the controversy surrounding his identity.

However, APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, a lawyer, chided Obi and Atiku.

The ruling party  said both Obi and Atiku, who are contesting the victory of the president at the poll, have invented a “spurious and imaginary identity crisis” to incite the public.

In the statement titled: ‘Shame as Peter Obi jumps on Atiku Abubakar’s bandwagon,’ the spokesman said the two litigants have polluted the public space with their consistent deception, adding that they have become accusers and judges in their cases against the president.

Taking exception to Obi’s allusion to identity question, Morka said Nigerians knew President Tinubu, who had served them as senator and governor before he was voted as president.

Also yesterday, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, who spoke on a national television, said Obi and Atiku were suffering from the “traumatic effect of electoral defeat”, stressing that they had regressed to “a level of absurdity”.

    APC: Obi, Atiku inciting Nigerians

The ruling party condemned Obi’s outbursts, saying that he was inciting Nigerians to violence like his co-traveller, Atiku.

According to the APC, the two opposition figures have polluted the public space with the same spurious claims they had laid before the court.

The APC statement reads: “Like a befuddled mind jolted out of deep slumber, Peter Obi, Labour Party’s presidential candidate, hugged a podium to echo a script authored by Atiku Abubakar, his senior partner and co-traveller on a dark ignominious alley to nowhere.

“At his press conference earlier today, Mr. Obi blathered on about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s identity and academic record, like a broken voice note of Atiku Abubakar, cutting a pitiful profile as though forced to read a prepared statement by his unimaginative handlers, and mendacious associates in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Unwilling to miss out in the orchestrated campaign of calumny against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his certificate from the Chicago State University, Obi jumped on the tailboard of Atiku’s bandwagon to satisfy his uncanny and insatiable thirst for cheap media attention, long after his Labour Party had dissociated itself from a bogus call to action by the former Vice President.

”In his drivel, Peter Obi, demanded that the President reintroduce himself to Nigerians, as though the 8.9 million Nigerians who voted him last February were all groggy when they made their free democratic choice.

”Mr. Obi must know that President Tinubu does not need a re-introduction. He does not have any identity problem, except the one contrived by the Atikus and Peters of our political firmament.

“The 8.9 million Nigerians who voted him into office were, and remain, aware of  his outstanding record and accomplishments as a defender of democracy, freedom, social and economic justice for over three decades. Nigerians know President Tinubu as a thoroughbred professional and former auditor and treasurer of Mobil Nigeria, now ExxonMobil.

”Nigerians know the President as a former Senator of the Federal Republic where he served as Chairman of the influential Finance and Appropriations  Committee.

”They know  him as a former Governor of Lagos State who designed and paved the pathway to the growth and prosperity of present day Lagos, the 5th largest economy in Africa.

“Nigerians know who they voted for as the 16th President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They voted for him with full faith and confidence that his track record and wide competences would help in the re-engineering of our country’s economy for the good of the greatest number of Nigerians.

“In marked contrast, Nigerians  have flatly and serially rejected Atiku Abubakar, and denied Peter Obi’s presidential bid in the last election election.

”Beyond regaling Nigerians with false and embarrassing statistics for which he has gained notoriety, Peter Obi cannot be said to be known for any outstanding performance as governor of Anambra State for eight years with no worthy legacy standing to his name.

”As for President Tinubu’s academic record at the Chicago State University, the facts are clear and settled except for those political jaundiced by the trauma of electoral defeat.

”The  Chicago State University has unequivocally stated over and over again, and in a deposition, under oath, by the Registrar, Caleb Westberg that President Tinubu attended the school and graduated with Honours.

”Nigerians are now familiar with stellar academic performance of President Tinubu as evidenced by his transcript as released by the CSU with 18As, 10Bs and 3Cs grades.

”It is disturbing and utterly contemptuous of the courts of our land for the duo of Atiku and Obi to rail and pollute the public space with the very same issues that they have submitted to the court for adjudication. They have continued to perpetrate public deception, operating, simultaneously, as accusers and judges in their own base cause.

”We condemn the sordid and disgraceful attempt by Obi, Atiku and their cheerleaders to use the mainstream and social media to intimidate the judiciary, incite the public to violence, disparage Justices of the Appeal and Supreme Court, and we urge all well meaning Nigerians to condemn this anti-democratic and irresponsible conduct of both political naggers. For the records, our team of lawyers stand advised to explore all available judicial mechanisms towards bringing Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to justice for their ceaseless contemptuous conduct.

“In our democracy, the office of the President is not filled by intimidation, blackmail or reckless self help. It is filled by the people, by their lawful votes at the polls just as they did on February 25, 2023 when they elected Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

    Basiru: Obi, Atiku bad losers

Dr. Basiru, a lawyer, described Obi and Atiku as bad losers raising unfounded allegations after losing the presidential election.

He said they should apologise to Nigerians by misleading them with the spurious allegation that President Tinubu never attended CSU.

The national secretary said their allusion to identity crisis underscored their shortfall in historical perception.

He said the curious identity question they had raised was ill-motivated, ill-advised and an attempt to dance to the gallery.

Basiru said it was laughable that Obi,  who as governor refused to conduct local government elections in Anambra for eight years has turned around to pontificate on integrity, democracy and rule of law.

He wondered why Atiku, if he truly values his integrity, had not repudiated former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s description of him and he is not in court over the questioning of his integrity in his book “My Watch”.

He said both litigants should have kept their arguments within the temple of justice instead of fueling public sentiments.

Basiru, however, said President Tinubu is busy with state business, adding that he will not be distracted by those wearing garments of absurdity.

Igbo group to Obi, Atiku: don’t heat up polity

An Igbo group, Omaluegwuoku Progressive Initiative (OPI), flayed Obi and Atiku for heating up the polity by their utterances and actions.

Its President, Mrs Ginika Tor, advised the two opposition leaders to calm down, saying that Tinubu’s victory was divine and popular.

She advised the duo to refrain from distracting President Tinubu from delivering his “Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Tor, a member of the defunct All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, said if God had anointed Obi, he would have won the poll.

She said: ”How can you ask our president, a man that is the number one man in this country, to come out and explain his state? So, by now, a man who served eight years as a governor, you don’t know his state? He should tell us his background educationally? Is that right?

“It is an insult to Nigeria as a nation. For you to call out our President who was massively supported, elected, confirmed and validated as the President  to come and stand before who? To say he’s from this state, from this country, from this region, from this locality. Does he owe us that? What the President owe us now is to take us to our destination of choice.

“So, I am disappointed. Whatever Obi does now is going to play out in the future. So, let us be cautious and let all Igbos not be misled by this press interview.”

  • Tinubu making transformative strides

    Tinubu making transformative strides

    By Femi Salako

As Nigeria celebrates her 63rd independence anniversary under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, it is important therefore, to acknowledge that it obviously not yet Uhuru for the most populous black nation. It is however, worthy of note that transformative strides of the former Lagos Governor across all sectors are beginning to yield the desired results.

In his less than four months of presiding over the affairs of Nigeria,

President Tinubu had come up with well thought-out policies that are targeted at correcting entrenched institutional abuses, systemic anomalies and to also free-up resources for developmental projects. Chief of these policies was the termination of the hemorrhaging fuel subsidy and the multiple foreign exchange windows. The president has since assumption of office been strategically waging relentless wars on insecurity, oil theft and had also gone ahead to reverse the trend of reckless borrowing; which was sadly the norm of the previous administration.

Commendably, President Tinubu has mustered the political will to deal decisively with the disturbing issues of institutional abuse and endemic corruption. He had gone a step further to appoint Jim Obazee as a Special Investigator to probe the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other related entities.

Read Also: NIS to acquire aircraft, drones for border surveillance

President Tinubu has equally been making giant strides to reposition Nigeria for Foreign Direct Investments as well as strengthening the nation’s relations with other countries of the world.

Tinubu, recently gave an inaugural speech at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he emphasized the need for Africa nations to overcome the constraints of foreign exploitation and unlock its vast potential. He also took advantage of the global session to canvass mutually beneficial investments for Nigeria. President Tinubu also went ahead to undertake the historic ringing of the closing bell at NASDAQ in New York, United States. The event was part of the proceedings at the executive business dialogue organised by the United States Chamber of Commerce, Nigerian Exchange Group Plc and Nigerian Investment Promotion Council.

Meanwhile, what could be gleefully described as an independence day gift to Nigerians by President Tinubu was the composition of a formidably young, dynamic and visionary cabinet.

It is quite heartwarming that the appointed  ministers have since hit the ground running by coming up with policies

that had evidently marked radical departure from the old order and also brought positive impacts on Nigerians.

In line with the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda of President Bola Tinubu, the minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has already made a bold statement that a new Nigeria is possible. The former parliamentarian has in less then one month done what could be described as the impossible by clearing the backlog of 204,000 international passports through the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

He simply achieved this feat by providing leadership and removing bureaucratic bottlenecks impeding  Nigerians from acquiring  international passports and other immigration documents.

It is a general knowledge that prior to the inauguration of Tunji-Ojo as the Minister of Interior, the issue of

renewal and obtaining of new passport was a huge embarrassment to Nigeria as a nation. Tunji-Ojo has also put measures in place for a seamless partnership between the Interior Ministry and Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
