APC stalwart gives Tinubu panacea for economic recovery

The Federal Government has been advised to look inward for a solution to the nation’s economic woes.

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Celestine Chukwunenye, who gave the advice in a statement, said since “our problems are internal and local”, the solutions could also come from within.

He said the country is blessed with abundant experts who understand its economic system. On recovery of stolen national assets through bogus or inflated contracts, Chukwunenye said “Those who voluntarily return what they stole should not be prosecuted” to avoid the waste of scarce financial resources on the knotty court cases.

Chukwunenye is pained by the prevailing insecurity in the country. He said the issue must be tackled through a multi-faceted approach to save lives and property. He added: “The states and local governments must be strengthened and charged to provide adequate security for their residents. Political prisoners should be set free and handed over to their states for appropriate rehabilitation and management.”

The APC stalwart advised President Bola Tinubu to integrate operators of illegal refineries in the Niger Delta region to enable them to grow and develop local refining capacity. His words: “Local people with the knowledge and skills of refining crude oil should be encouraged to improve their facilities and make them environmentally safe.”

He warned against the ongoing “destruction of artisanal refineries and reliance on foreign refineries. It is not only wrong but stupid”.

On the aviation sector, Chukwunenye said: “Our private airlines should be assisted to start utilising all our Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASA). Governments at all levels can invest in these airlines to make them bigger and more viable, by acquiring up to 40 per cent equity stake in such ventures. Going to invest in a foreign airline to utilise our BASA is an act of self-hate. Those who took such a decision needed to be pitied and investigated to determine what went wrong. Utilising our BASA will quickly yield us needed foreign exchange, which will help foreign airlines repatriate their earnings in our dear country.”

He also urged the government “to leverage on the Nigeria Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and the Health Management Organisations (HMOs) to extend health insurance coverage to individual Nigerians, families and artisanal groups e.g. mechanics, vulcanisers, market men and women, tailors etc”. He added: “This will lead to improved coverage, better healthcare, and finances.”

The First Lady spoke yesterday in Abuja at the National Girls’ Interactive Session With Policy and Decision Makers while commemorating this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child.

A statement by her spokesperson Busola Kukoyi said Senator Tinubu noted that investing in the girl-child is in the best interest of the nation.

She stressed that the girl-child must be protected from all forms of violence with a safe and inclusive environment provided for her to thrive.

“Our girls are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are the leaders of today. It’s high time we broke down barriers that have held them back for long. Education is the key weapon that we must use to ensure that every girl is free from discrimination and intimidation.

“This is one of the reasons I have taken it as a priority to encourage the girl-child so she can achieve her potentials. Under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), we are looking at promoting alternative high school for girls so that despite whatever misadventure they find themselves, they can still acquire education that could give them access to higher education.

    • Kicks off campaign for governor’s re-election

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu holds the people of Imo State and Ndigbo in general in high esteem, Vice President Kashim Shettima said yesterday.

The Vice President made this known at  a rally to kick-off  the campaign  for the  re-election  of Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The election holds on November 11.

The rally was held  at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

Shettima said that the President has demonstrated his love for Ndigbo with the appointments he has made in his cabinet.

He said:”Right now, the Minister of Trade and Investment is an indigene of Imo State in addition to this, the President has approved special assistants and senior special assistants for my office.

“The President has graciously appointed three indigenes of Imo State, my senior special assistant, Media, Stanley Okocha from Ngor Okpalla Local Government Area here in Imo State; Special Assistant, Business and Productivity, Isaac Uzoma, is an indigene of the state, so also my special assistant on public health, Uju Rochas Okorocha is also an indigene of Imo State.”

He said that Governor Hope Uzodimma has done exceedingly well in terms of infrastructural development, in terms of value addition to the state of Imo, from the paltry N16 billion, he has increased the Internally Generated Revenue to N30 billion per annum. He has built some state of the art roads here in Imo State.”

For the purpose of consolidation and continuity, he said it is extremely important for the people of Imo to rally round the governor and get him reelected for the second term.

“You may not appreciate him, but in the fullest of time, you will come to realise how important he is in the politics of Ndigbo. Ndigbo were described as economical, enterprising and educationally ambitious but Ndigbo cannot afford to play in the periphery of Nigerian politics.”

He said Governor Uzodimma is at the verge of bringing forth Ndigbo into the mainstream of Nigeria politics.

‘’The good people of Imo I have seen your faces,  I have seen the faces of Hope,  I have seen the faces of resilience and determination,  but mind you Rome was not destroyed by outside invaders, Rome was destroyed by complicity of the Romans. We cannot afford to be complacent on the 11th of next month, we should all come out in full force and re-elect our governor for another term of four years.”

He reiterated that President Tinubu is 1000 percent behind Governor Uzodimma, he holds him in the highest esteem.

Thanking the people on behalf of the President, he promised that he would be coming back to the state with an APC team including former governors Ikedi Ohakim and Senator Rochas Okorocha.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Governor Hope Uzodimma noted that the Imo State he met in 2020 is not the same today.

He said:  “I have no doubt in my mind that every living soul in Imo State who was here when we came in by January 2020, who is objective and honest will quickly tell everybody who cares to know that the Imo State we met in 2020 is not the same Imo State of today.  A lot of remarkable improvements have been made in virtually all the sectors of the economy and politics.

“I will not be contradicted if I say that life has become more meaningful to our people. We have rescued our state from the infrastructural decay we met on the ground.

“We have repaired and recognised the medical sector, and recovered the education sector. I am aware that the people present here today came on their own because you requested me not to send money for mobilization.”

Chairman, Campaign Council of Imo State and Cross River State, Governor Senator Bassey Otu said that the people must retain hope, renew hope by re-electing Hope.

“Retain hope, renew hope and re-elect hope, because the only way to measure or assess the growth of an organisation or an entity is when there is sustainability.

“When all is lost, hope remains the only thing to win the battle, the revolution going on in Imo State.  I don’t  have any doubt and looking at the faces of Imolites today,  I know  that this election is won.”

Tinubu fulfills promise as rehabilitation begins at East-West road

President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled the promise he made to the Rivers state stakeholders to rehabilitate the deplorable section of the Eleme axis of the East-West Road.

Critical stakeholders from the state led by Rivers governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had during their September 14, visit to President Tinubu at Aso Rock, demanded among other things the rehabilitation of the road.

Fubara had argued that fixing the road would enable easy lifting of petroleum products after the completion of the ongoing turnaround maintenance of the Port Harcourt Refinery, which is located along the road corridor.

The minister of works, Dave Umahi, also assessed the section of the road, which had become a death trap to commuters and motorists, and promised to fix it.

It was gathered that the contractors were already mobilised to the site and had commenced massive construction work along the road.

Residents and other road users particularly truck drivers expressed happiness over the ongoing rehabilitation saying they had suffered a lot on the road.

Clear doubts on CSU saga, Obi tells Tinubu

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25 general election, Peter Obi has called on President Bola Tinubu to come clean by “telling Nigerians who he is.”

Obi said the recent controversy generated by the Chicago State University was unnecessary.

He said “only president Tinubu can put to rest the controversy surrounding his identity.”

The former Anambra Governor said this during an ongoing press conference on Wednesday in Abuja.

The CSU released Tinubu’s academic record to the Presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar after weeks of legal tussle.

The former vice president on Friday filed the CSU documents as fresh evidence at the Supreme Court.

Atiku and Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, had filed 86 grounds of appeal at the Supreme Court to nullify the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal’s judgment that affirmed Tinubu’s victory.

Speaking on Wednesday, Obi said the saga had further “dented the image of Nigerians globally.”

Obi said “Nigerians deserved to know the true identity of their president.”

He added: “The president should come clear on his name, age, where he schooled, who he went to school with and others.

Respectfully, I am pleading that this issue be attended to now.”
