100 Days: The untold stories of President Tinubu’s leadership acts

    • By Tunde Rahman

In the last one-week since President Bola Tinubu clocked 100 days in office, commentators and analysts, political observers and politicians have busied themselves, dissecting the President’s performance in office, particularly his major decisions and policy options. Many have also commented on the achievements recorded and the areas that require improvements.

The newspapers and electronic media have been awash with many lauding the giant strides recorded within just three months and a few days in office. Some top politicians like former Zamfara State governor, Senator Abdulaziz Yari representing Zamfara West, and the Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for instance, bought the front pages of some newspapers to celebrate the President, his exemplary leadership and well-thought out economic policies in just 100 days. Some others, particularly the opposition, behaving like sore losers that they are, however, refuse to acknowledge the gains achieved, even amid the prevailing challenges.

Assessing a President’s performance in 100 days in office seemed to have become the norm from the days of 32nd US President Franklin D. Roosevelt who in his inaugural address on March 4, 1933 indicated he wanted to move with unprecedented speed to address the problems facing the United States of America, yet it was acknowledged even at the time that to judge an incoming President on the accomplishments of his first 100 days in office is to hold him to an impossible standard. 100 days in the life of a nation may appear like a drop in an ocean. Yet a lot was achieved within that space of time under the Tinubu presidency such that it would be very appropriate to talk about them.

The achievements recorded, which included resetting the economy by removing the ruinous fuel subsidy, thus freeing for development activities money that would otherwise have illegally gone into a few pockets, unifying the many exchange rates that paved the grounds for arbitrage, the humongous amount now being raked in ensuring that the Federal Government and the sub-nationals now have more money to share from the Federation Accounts, the compensatory palliatives now coming from the states as a result of the increased allocation, the gradual return of Nigeria’s preeminent status on the international stage, and many more, are worth talking about and repeating.

For instance, unwittingly drawing attention to the huge amounts states now receive from the Federation Accounts, the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, in a 2nd quarter 2023 Federation Account Statutory Revenue Allocations Report, disclosed that the 36 states of the federation received about N1.51 trillion or 34.5% of the total N4.37 trillion shared by the three tiers of the government between January and June 2023. “On a year-on-year basis, the report showed that when compared with the corresponding period in 2022, allocations to the State Governments from the Federation Account in 2023 grew by about 11.2% to N1.42 trillion from N1.26 trillion,” the report said. Not a few economic watchers would know the bulk of that money came in June 2023 alone when around N1trillion was distributed.

This intervention is not really about these accomplishments, which are very remarkable by all standards within just 100 days. It’s about President Tinubu’s acts of leadership. The untold stories of courage, the boldness and audacity he has brought into governance, the ability to accept mistakes and make correction, the empathy he has demonstrated, how he engaged youths in government, the vision behind it and the way and manner he carried it about. Stories abound about all of these, which are either not properly highlighted or remain largely unreported. The true test of a leader’s capabilities emerges when his actions and utterances are gauged in those moments he lets down his guards, oblivious that he is being watched. These are the stories told in this article.

The first is about the empathy President Tinubu has brought into governance. The President lived in his Asokoro, Abuja residence for around two months or so, while the Presidential Villa accommodation was being readied, before he eventually moved in. Sensing that the main residence at the Villa was going to take much longer to be fully repaired, he caused the 3-bedroom apartment, popularly called The Glass House, which will take a shorter time to be put in good shape for use, to be worked on. However, in the meantime, before that Glass House got ready, and uncomfortable that he was causing the people around his Asokoro house some discomfort by his daily movement to and fro the Presidential Villa, he instructed his staff to print a letter of apology, circulated in and around Asokoro, appealing to the people for understanding and urging them give him a little time to sort out himself. That was awesome and humbling in my view.

Secondly, while not dwelling so much here about his boldness in removing the twin subsidies- the one on fuel and foreign exchange- even as he acknowledged that there would be some accompanying difficulties, you would recall that the President at every turn kept urging Nigerians to be patient and to know that the pains would be temporary. He even made a broadcast to the nation on this. Appealing for patience and understanding, he had said in the broadcast:

“I understand the hardship you face. I wish there were other ways. But there is not. If there were, I would have taken that route as I came here to help not hurt the people and nation that I love.”

He would say the present pains could be likened to birth pangs and that the moment the baby is born, the pains disappear and that the ultimate joy of a woman is in seeing her baby.

Thirdly, in 100 days, President Tinubu demonstrated his ability to accept mistakes and make corrections, which is rare among many leaders. The President, on further reflection, dropped a ministerial nominee he felt was not up to the billing to be the minister representing conservative Kano. He also reshuffled and readjusted the portfolios of some ministers even before they took office, accepting some mistakes were made and correcting the errors. He effected changes in the composition of the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission with respect to the nominations of Ondo and Cross River States representatives. In my view, it is an act of good leadership and courage to accept mistakes and to correct them.

Fourthly, appointing young persons like 37-year-old renowned surgeon and former Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu, former House of Representatives member, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and tech expert, Mr. Bosun Tijani as ministers is commendable. President Tinubu, however, upped the ante when he went ahead to pick 32-year-old entrepreneur and another tech-expert, Khalil Halilu, as Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). As he assumed office, Halilu pledged to use STI to drive the President’s socio-economic priority areas.

But the real story here is about the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani. Visiting the Presidential Villa to thank President Tinubu for his appointment three weeks ago or so, just before the inauguration of Ministers, he met the Chief of Staff, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Mr. Dele Alake, this writer, and one or two others in the President’s Office that fateful day. And then one of us in that office mentioned something about how Tijani in the heat of exasperation with the country excoriated his fatherland and upbraided the governing APC. President Tinubu promptly shut the person up, saying what Bosun did in the heat of anger was understandable and should be forgotten, adding that he too had at one point during the dark days of the military frustratingly condemned the country. That was a forgiving and fatherly leader on display in that statement. Any need to tell more stories that President Tinubu, like many people had remarked, is indeed an appropriate man for the present time given his leadership experience, temperament, unique skills, competence, international exposure and extensive contacts which are required to take Nigeria to the next level.

Tribunal’s affirmation of Tinubu’s victory well deserved – Gombe APC Chieftain

Ambassador Finney David is a Senior Special Adviser on Women Affairs to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State and the North East Zonal Coordinator of Tinubu National Alliance, TNA for the 2023 general election. In this interview with Sola Shittu, the party chieftain said the victory of President Tinubu at the Presidential Election Petition Court PEPT was a well deserved one.

Last week the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC affirmed the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. How do you feel about this?

Of course I feel elated, I am not expecting anything less. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu worked for this and I have always held that strong belief that he is the most qualified and most hard-working candidate for the office of President in the last general election. You were there yourself and you witnessed all the hard works we put in place to ensure this victory for our dear Mr. President.

So I can only wish him well as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as again affirmed by the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. It is a well deserved victory. A victory he worked so hard for it and the work did not start in 2023. You need to know that he started it long ago and I am happy that he was able to achieve this. Congratulations to Mr. President.

Coincidentally, the judgement came at a time when Mr. President was also celebrating his 100 days in office. What would be your assessment of the government’s performance so far?

I will say the last 100 days have been exciting and at the same time challenging. It has not been a bed of roses as we all know but we have to commend Mr. President for taking very bold and courageous decisions on our economy; although all of us are feeling the impact but we believe in him and we have hope in his renewed hope agenda for the nation.

Yes, it is tough now, yes it is not easy for everyone but I believe it is a price we have to pay for a better tomorrow. For a long time, this country has been a victim of maladministration and now that we are having a round peg in a round hole, we believe the results of all these sufferings in the country now will be positive. At the end of these decisions, we will have a better country.

With criticism, complaints and grumblings coming from different parts of the country, are you optimistic that all will still be well?

Of course I am optimistic. I believe not only in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his renewed hope agenda but also in our great ruling party the All Progressive Congress, (APC) in restoring the lost glory of this nation. Our party understands the work at hand and we have man who is well prepared to deliver on the things we need to do as a country to move forward.

Let me remind you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was a front runner pro-democracy activist before he became the Governor of Lagos State in 1999 and now the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2023. I have not seen a most consistent, most strategic and realistic politician in the country like him. He has been very stable as a progressive politician.

What we need in Nigeria is transformation. His progressive policies transformed Lagos State to what it is today in Nigeria. Today, I have not seen any state in Nigeria that can stand shoulder to shoulder with Lagos either in terms of consistency in politics or economy, Lagos is like the golden goose laying the golden egg for the country.

And if you want to talk of good governance, Lagos is not only an example but also a model for all other state in Nigeria and the foundation for all these accolades for Lagos was laid by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. So, what we need to do is to persevere and be patient. I am optimistic that at the end of all these hard times, we will see a better country.

Back home in Gombe your party lost the Presidential Election to the opposition People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) but won the Governorship election. How did you do it?

It was true Sola, that at a point, it seems like all hopes were lost for APC in Gombe because of the outcome of the Presidential Election. But at the same time it was like the result was a stinging fly meant to wake all of us up from slumber and we did it for our party so that we will not be left out of the affairs at the center. We went back to the drawing board to perfect our strategy by reaching out more to the people and restore their confidence in the party.

Your Local Government, Balanga in Gombe was known for the prominent role played for APC in the Governorship election against all expectations, how do you do it?

It is true that Balanga, my local government delivered the winning vote for our party, but you know that politics is not only a game for the bravest but also for the smartest. On how we do it, I can not disclose that to you but in any case you don’t expect anything less especially since the Deputy Governor is coming from our local government so we have a duty not only to deliver our local government but also our son who is the deputy Governor.

As a matter of fact a lot of things went underground before that could happen for our party but as I said earlier, that was part of the game. Politics is a game for the bold and the courageous. I joined the APC during the merger when my State was PDP so, we were the foundation and building blocks for APC in Gombe State and during which I contested for the Federal house of Reps Balanga /Billiri under APC and lost.

But I was appointed a Federal Governing Board Member repsenting the North East, National Gallery of Arts. I also hold the traditional titles of Jakadiya Waja, Gombe State and Magajiyar Festac Town, by the Sarki Hausa in Lagos.

I was a member of Welfare and Entertainment of the APC 2022 convention planning Committee, Member of Tinubu/Shittima campaiagn council, where I served in different sub,-committees, such as Directorate, Humanitarian and social, Youth focus campaign team (YFCT,) Women Campiaing team, Contact and Mobilazation (PCC) North East, Gombe State Tinubu/Shittima Director of Women, Independant Campaing Council (ICC) amongst many other support groups. So I can tell you that our party, APC, is on ground in Gombe State.

The President has been able to set up his cabinet within the stipulated ninety days in office but there are still some offices, especially in the agencies left to be filled. How soon do we expect this to happen?

You will agree with me that Mr. President hit the ground running, I mean right from the removal of subsidy from his inaugural speech, the removal and replacement of service chiefs and now the appointment of ministers. By and large, all these have been done with little or no complaint from the general public and this is contrary to what was witnessed in the past.

I mean in a country of over 250 ethnic groups it will be very difficult to satisfy one without offending another but Asiwaju has been able to do that with little or no complaints. You know the offices to be filled in agencies and parastatals are large in number so I believe they are already working on it and will be resolved very soon. Also you have to know that a lot of parties and interests are involved this time around so many factors will be taking into consideration in these appointments.

What will be your advice to the opposition parties candidates especially your brother, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who is coming from your region, the North East on the outcome of the PEPT?

Well, I can only advise my dear brother former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to accept it as the will of God and extend the hands of fellowship to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu so as to save the country from the pressure of litigation. Like I said during the campaign period, Atiku had been tried for eight years as vice president but failed the entire North East zone.

His inability to attract federal infrastructures to the North-East made many in the region, especially APC, to go for another person from the zone, hoping that Sen. Shettima would make the difference. We so much believe in our principals; we all know that Tinubu is capable of taking Nigeria out of the present situation and that Shettima, now in the same office Atiku occupied for eight years without any developmental impact in the North-East, would certainly make a difference.

Tinubu names Cardoso CBN governor in major shake-up

    • Usoro, Dattijo, Ikeazor, Bello nominated as deputy governors
    • Cautious optimism as stakeholders set agenda for new team

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday set the tone for the planned re-organisation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) with the appointment of a new management team for the bank.

Tinubu nominated ace banker and former Chairman of Citibank Nigeria, Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, as incoming CBN governor.

Nominated as deputy governors of the apex bank are Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor and Dr. Bala M. Bello.

Experts wasted no time yesterday to draw the attention of the new team to what should be their focus.

The new management team will replace the one headed by the suspended governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele.

News of the appointment was broken by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, who said in a statement that Cardoso was nominated to serve for a term of five years at the first instance, pending his confirmation by the Senate.

Ngegale said the appointment was in conformity with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which “vests in the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria the authority to appoint the Governor and Four (4) Deputy Governors for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Tinubu, according to him, charged the nominees to “use their time to effect the needed reforms at the CBN, to revive both the Nigerian public and global partners’ confidence.”

“In line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, the President expects the above listed nominees to successfully implement critical reforms at the Central Bank of Nigeria, which will enhance the confidence of Nigerians and international partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all,” the President’s spokesman said.

Cardoso was Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State.

Deputy CBN governor designate Dattijo’s last public office was Commissioner for Budget and Planning in the Nasir El-Rufai Administration in Kaduna State.

Expectations high as experts set agenda for team

Reacting to the new appointments, Economics professor, Jonathan Adeyemi Aremu, who served as the Acting Assistant Director of Research at the CBN, said he would have preferred that the nominees rose from the ranks.

“For those appointed, they need to understand that role to be able to perform very well. There are traditional functions of CBN which you don’t go and learn.

“As such, you must be able to have the experience working in the system. So, if the new appointees have it, then we say congratulations,” he said.

Aremu said successive appointees for the top job of the CBN have not discharged their duties creditably well.

He said: “Over the years, we have discovered that those who have been appointed to head CBN have not done quite well.”

Delving into history, he said: “Ola Vincent was in the Bank of England when he was appointed. That’s internal.

“Then, his deputy was also part of the CBN. The person that took over from Ola Vincent was Alhaji Abdulkadri Ahmed, who was equally chosen from the system.

“Even Sanusi was a staff of CBN in Nigeria. Part of the understanding those people have was because they knew the internal workings of the system.

“For a position as sensitive as the CBN, it should not be rushed. I think the President must have done that calculation very well.

“Those who are coming there must know their onions. Well, to me, I’m saying that the insiders are better but I know very well that the insiders have lots of information about the workings of the system.”

Aremu, who is a consultant with the ECOWAS Common Investment Market, said the trouble is not as much as using an insider but about those who can get the job done.

“My opinion is that we want those who can bring the economy back to good reckoning. If they have the right information, perhaps they can work.

“I’m not saying those who are inside are better. There are directors in each department so they will get all the information that they want. But Nigerians’ expectations are very high now.”

Mallam Aminu Gwadabe, President, Association of Bureau De Change of Nigeria (ABCON), hoped the new appointments would calm tension and frayed nerves.

His words: “Now that there is substantive management, decisions will be taken in terms of implementing policies. So, it is expected because of what has been happening around the current management of the CBN.

“I think there is a need for these substantive announcements. And don’t forget they have a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York, USA, next week. It will not be ideal to go with the acting CBN team but a substantive team.”

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce described Cardoso’s appointment as “a clear case of a square peg in a square hole.”

In a congratulatory message on his X (formerly Twitter) account yesterday, @benmurraybruce,theformer Director General of the Nigerian Televition Authority (NTA) said:”Congratulations to my personal friend and brother, Yemi Cardoso, on his nomination as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by President Bola Tinubu. It is a testament to his capabilities and expertise.

“This is a clear case of a square peg in a square hole, perfectly suited for this pivotal role. It’s a proud moment for all who know him, and I’m sure he will make significant milestones in his new capacity.

“Best wishes to him in his new endeavor.”

Okechukwu Unegbu, lawyer, arbitrator and stockbroker, said Nigerians should not expect any miracle from the fresh appointees just yet.

Unegbu, who is Managing Director/Chief Executive, Maxifund Investments and Securities Plc, said the new team needs to understand their role.

“As for the new appointment, we cannot say hallelujah yet because all we need to do is to understand who these people are.

“Unless we understand them, we can’t categorically say the kind of person they are. But of course, the President should have had discussions or recommendations about them before making the appointment. It’s not that they are going to do any magic as such.

“It’s a matter of are they getting the understanding right on the economy we are running, understand the monetary policy that is in place, and then try to listen to elders, because  you cannot avoid elders because they know better. They have gone through the system and they didn’t get their fingers burnt.”

He reiterated that the new appointees need to have a good grasp of the monetary environment, and also work on inflation because this is so high.

“The new appointees have their work cut out for them already. They need to look at the foreign exchange because it’s so high. There is no good sign yet.

“We owe the airlines over $600 million. These are some of the problems they are going to face now and I think  they will need to first of all sit down to understand the environment and make proper decisions.

“I’m sure the deputy governors appointed have to bring their heads down. The problem in Nigeria is that once people get appointments, they become too proud and self-conceited.”

Mr. Moses Adeniran, a former staff of the CBN, said besides Cardoso, not much is known about the deputy governors.

“We can only rely on the President’s judgment as far as the appointments are concerned, that he has chosen the right people. Going by the revelations we have on the ongoing probe of the CBN, we want to rely on the President’s judgment so to speak.

“As far as the CBN is concerned, the trust is no longer there. It can’t perform its functions in terms of supervisory and other functions because nobody respects them both internationally and even locally.

“So, we rely on the President apparently, maybe he has worked with Yemi Cardoso before and the other people. The President must be sure of their pedigree. We hope they will do better.”

A board member of the CBN told The Nation that he would have preferred a CBN governor from a non-banking or financial sector expert.

The board member, who does not want to be named, said: “What one would have expected this time around for a change would be to have a non-banking sector or financial sector expert because there are strengths and weaknesses in bankers being governor of the Central Bank.

“But it has already happened so we will leave it at that.”

He added: “Once there is that understanding that central banking in a developing economy is not the same as central banking in a developed industrial economy, he (Cardoso) should be able to do well”.

Asked about the general state of affairs in the CBN since the suspension of Godwin Emefiele as governor of the CBN and the spate of alleged arrests and invitation by security agencies and special investigators, the board member said: “For now, there seems to be an air of uncertainty among the staff of the CBN.

“They are a bit concerned that these developments are going on. If you get to the bank now, it’s like a graveyard.

“Invariably, it’s not the best thing to happen to a central bank and it’s regrettable that conditions prevailed which led to this kind of situation.

“Perhaps things would have been handled differently to spare the bank this kind of trauma taking place there.

“Morale is a bit on the low side. Perhaps with the change announced by the President, morale will start regaining momentum as it were. But one can’t be sure about that.

“Their nomination is still subject to ratification by the senate: screening, confirmation by the Senate and then final approval by the President.

“I think the only issue there is that there could be a vacuum now but maybe by next week there may be formal communication from the President on who should take over in the interim.”

It was not clear last night whether the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for September 25th and 26th 2023 will still take place.

The board member, who also attends the meetings, told The Nation that “it’s very uncertain if the MPC meeting coming up next week will hold, because if there is no governor.

“Definitely the MPC meeting will not hold, although preparations are being made.

“Maybe by next week their fate will be determined. But I am not optimistic. It’s not possible that top management has been removed and those ogas still remain. But we don’t know when they want to do it (MPC meeting).”

Also speaking on Cardoso’s nomination as CBN governor, Prof Uche Uwaleke described it as a “welcome development. Dr Cardoso is eminently qualified.

“The CBN is too sensitive an institution to allow a chief executive function in an acting capacity for a long period. A substantive CBN Governor sends the right signals to financial markets”.

    Meet the man Olayemi Cardoso

Cardoso comes to his new job with a rich pedigree. Not only is he a former chairman of Citibank Nigeria, he is also a distinguished leader in the financial and development sectors with over 30 years’ experience in the private, public and not-for-profit organisations.

He has also sat on the boards of Nigerian subsidiaries of Texaco and Chevron and chaired the board of EFInA, a financial sector development organisation supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

He was in government as Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget for Lagos State, where he championed the financial reform process which led to the state’s development of independent tax revenues.

In his capacity as a consultant and policy expert, he advised and collaborated with major international development organisations including the World Bank, Ford Foundation, UN Habitat, World Health Organisation and the Swedish Development Foundation.

He started his banking career with Citibank where he eventually rose to the position of Vice President leaving to co-found Citizens International Bank where he was an Executive Director for eight years.

Cardoso studied managerial and administrative studies at the Aston University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree.

He is the recipient of several awards including an honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration from Aston University, his alma mater, and the Global Distinguished Alumni Award from Citi.

Cardoso obtained a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School where he was a Mason Fellow.

During his tenure as the Chairman of the Board of Citibank Nigeria Limited between 2010 and 2022, Cardoso used his leadership skills and technical expertise to improve both the financial and non-financial wellbeing of the bank.

During this period, the bank’s total assets increased by 308.3 per cent, total revenue grew by 235.6 per cent, shareholders’ equity improved by 231.2 per cent.

Cardoso, as the Chairman of the Bank’s Board also advocated diversity and under his watch, Citibank Nigeria limited was able to execute various big tickets transactions for its many clients gender inclusion.

Similarly, the percentage of women in the bank’s employment improved to 38.3 per cent from 35 per cent when he took over. The percentage of women on the board of the bank also improved to 50 per cent from eight per cent when he became the Chairman.

He was an ardent supporter of Citi’s annual diversity and Citi Women’s initiatives which helped to celebrate the diverse teams at Citi and continues to encourage inclusion amongst its employees irrespective of their gender and/or position.

During his tenure as the Board Chairman, the Bank won various awards and recognitions both locally and internationally, among which are Euromoney – Best investment Bank in Africa 2015, 2017, Lifetime Achievement Global Finance Best Corporate/Institutional Digital Bank in Nigeria 2017, 2018, 2019, the Most Customer Focused Bank in 2016 by KPMG, Global Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2017, among others.

Aston University, Birmingham, UK, wrote this on its website about Cardoso:

“From his days as a student of managerial and administrative studies at Aston in the 1970s to his 30-year career as a financial sector and development policy expert, we catch up an alumnus who has never given up the quest for high standards”.

When asked about his primary role as Chairman of the board of directors, Citibank Nigeria Limited, Cardoso, wrote:  “My career in Citibank started in London. Frankly, I went in and out of Citibank about two or three times, but Citi is good like that, it doesn’t hold it against you. If you’ve got experiences elsewhere, they are happy for you to bring them back into the organisation.

“The last time I went back as a non-executive, and now I’ve been chairman of the bank for almost 10 years.

“It’s easy to feel that there’s a disconnect between you as chairman and everybody else, but in my case, it’s not like that because it’s an institution I know very well.

“It has gone through enormous changes, but it’s where I cut my teeth. One of the things that’s important to realise is that people look up to you. You always try to conduct your activities in a way that conforms to very high ethical standards.

“Citi, for example, is the only US bank on the African continent. There are American companies who come into Nigeria looking for banks they can deal with. We have to show that we can provide the services they are used to in any other part of the world.”

As chairman of the board, my responsibilities are also to ensure that we are able to think globally, act locally. Those are very important issues for us.

“Culturally, to blend in and to ensure that gender sensitivity is properly catered for. I ensure that all those different pieces of the jigsaw come together, enabling Citibank to be run in the most effective way possible.”

Cardoso returned to Aston University, UK in 2017 to receive his honorary degree (Doctor of Business Administration).

The university confirmed that Tinubu graduated from the institution in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

CBS Broadcasting Inc. however reported that the university said in a statement that the United States’ federal law prevents it from providing any further information about Tinubu’s record without consent or unless allowed to do so via court order.

The institution said: “As an educational institution, we are sometimes asked to provide information related to student records. Federal law known as FERPA (the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) protects the privacy of student records and limits what an institution can release.

“In August 2023, a request was made to the U.S. federal court for the university to provide information related to educational records concerning Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, and a former CSU student.

“The university has confirmed Tinubu attended CSU and graduated in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree. Federal law, however, prevents us from providing any further information without consent or unless allowed to do so via court order.

“CSU is confident in the veracity and integrity of our records regarding Tinubu’s completion of graduation requirements and degree certificate. The university is not a party to the Nigerian legal proceedings that spurred this request, and a U.S. federal judge will determine whether the university will provide further requested information.

“Our response to the request for Tinubu’s academic records has been entirely consistent with our practices, policies and federal law. We would respond in exactly the same manner for any request for any student information by a third party.”

Atiku had claimed that the documents were not authentic.

It was one of his claims in the petition he filed at the Presidential Election Petition Court against Tinubu’s victory in the February election.

The court affirmed Tinubu’s victory and dismissed Atiku’s petition and similar ones by Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Senator Dayo Adeyeye has lauded the federal government’s policy on the palliative measures for the poor and vulnerable Nigerians, describing it as a short-term intervention programme ahead of long term benefits of government policies.

Adeyeye spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital on Friday during the distribution of 3,000 bags of rice by the National Executive of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju (SWAGA), a volunteer group that worked for actualisation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu 2023 presidential ambition.

The Senator from Ekiti who is the National Chairman of SWAGA, appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience with Tinubu on his various programmes designed to lessen the sufferings of the people, describing the current painful period as temporary.

He said the distribution of the food items was part of SWAGA’s contribution to complement federal government’s efforts to ease the burden.

Also speaking, a former National Assembly member, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, said SWAGA is not just for the election but to support the federal government and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his economic policies.

According to Hon. Ojo, the distribution of the palliative rice would cut across the Southwest region of the country with Ogun state being the fourth state for the exercise, adding that the train will move to Lagos state.

He said the distribution of the palliative will not be restricted to distribution of food items only but also be extended to health care for the people and other skills acquisition trainings.

“It’s just a coincidence that we have been planning to do palliative before the federal government came up with palliatives. SWAGA is not there for election, we are here to assist the federal government and the President because we know what the President has in mind.

“In putting things right, people have to go through a bit of pain because the country has been bastardized in the last 30 years and things will not get better in just one day and that’s why we have decided to come with this palliatives and we will be coming up with different kinds of palliatives, not just food but we are looking at medicals and entrepreneur skills for people.

“Mr. President has good intentions for this country but the food will not end the suffering of the people, but this is to tell you that the President has people in mind.”

Hon. Ojo therefore, urged Nigerians to be patient with President Tinubu on his economic reforms, even as he called on well-meaning Nigerians to support him with people-centred programmes.

The SWAGA chairman in Ogun state, Senator Gbenga Obadara said he was lucky to have Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President.

Obadara said the distribution of the palliative will make government to be closer to the people.

He solicited the continued prayers from Nigerians to enable the President to deliver on his campaign promises, saying that the distribution of the palliative was the cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

Tinubu heads to New York Sunday for UN General Assembly

President Bola Tinubu will on Sunday depart Abuja to attend the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States of America (USA).

Disclosing this to journalists during a briefing at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, also declared an elaborate itinerary for President Tinubu’s outing in New York.

According to Ngelale, alongside the General Assembly proceedings, the President has a series of key meetings with multinational executives to discuss digital transformation, innovation, and investment in Nigeria.

He will also participate in important summits focusing on Sustainable Development Goals and climate ambition. Bilateral meetings with various world leaders will emphasize investment and economic development diplomacy.

“Aside from the engagements he’s going to be having at the General Assembly, there are series of very important side activities that will have wide ranging ramifications on the Nigerian economy.

“Following Mr. President’s successful trip to New Delhi for the G-20 and the staggering amount of investment he has been able to attract to Nigeria in a very short period of time, he is going to continue advancing very aggressively on his economic development, diplomatic drive to attract foreign direct investment into the country.

“So with that, I would like to inform you that His Excellency, Mr. President will be having the following meetings with major chief executives and leaders of multinational firms cutting across multiple sectors of the economy.

“The President will be meeting with the President of the Microsoft company worldwide, Brad Smith, with respect to how we can deepen digital transformation in the country, and how we can expand the digital economic footprint in the country to ensure that our micro and small enterprises will have access to the internet and have access to other smart technologies that will facilitate their ability to transact business quickly and efficiently.

“Mr. President will also be meeting with Sir Nick Clegg who is the president of Global Affairs for Meta technologies, that is expected to be a wide ranging conversation with respect to how we can leverage new innovations such as artificial intelligence and certain other applications to impact the way we do business in Nigeria.

“He will also be meeting with the global CEO of General Electric. Of course, the General Electric is a very well known international organization that cuts across multiple sectors, they have very deep involvement in the energy sector, electric power generation aviation, you know, engine production for multiple modes of transportation, amongst many other inputs. So we expect that to be a very important interaction”, Ngelale said.

He disclosed further that the President will be meeting with the global CEO of Exxon Mobil Oil and Gas Company.

He noted that the federal government sees this as a major opportunity to once again lay out in detail what Nigeria has on offer with respect to the implementation of the petroleum industry Act and the fiscal and tax incentives that are being put forward by the current administration.

He said the diplomatic meeting will further advance investment in the oil and gas sector not just in terms of oil, but more in terms of gas.

“All these engagements will include bilateral meetings on the sidelines, with the President of the United States, with the President of Comoros, with the President of South Africa, with the President of the European Union Commission, with the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, with the King of Jordan, with the Algerian President, with the Brazilian President and with the Spanish Prime Minister.

“It’s still dynamic. There are some that will still be added, but it’s fair to say that within a very short few days in New York, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will certainly be one of the most active and one of the most sought after heads of state with respect to his engagement in both bilateral and multilateral platforms,” he noted.

According to the Ngelale, these engagements include bilateral meetings on the sidelines with the President of the United States, Joe Biden; Comoros, Azali Assoumani, who is Chairman of the African Union; South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa; Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Aljeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune; European Union Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte; Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez and King Abdullah II bin Al-Hussein of Jordan, among others.
