Why Tinubu gave marching order to governors on food security, by Bago

Niger state governor, Mohammed Umar Bago said that President Bola Tinubu has given a matching order to state governors in the country to embark on mass food production in other to enhance food security in the country.

Bago, who disclosed this while interacting with members of the House of Representatives Press Corps, said his state was prepared to take the lead in complying with the presidential directive.

He said the state has already prepared about 300,000 hectares of farmland to be cultivated, while plans are ongoing to clear another 250,000 hectares of farmland across the state.

He said the state was conscious of the fact that it does not have the Blue economy being developed by the government, but intends to rely heavily on its land mass and green vegetation to improve the economy of the state.

Speaking on climate change, the governor said: “It is very very clear that climate change has been a topic of discussion in the world. This morning I watched with so much pain how Libya has been overtaken by flood unprecedented.

“As a country and as a State, that is 10% the total size of Nigeria with bodies of water for hydropower dams, it is high time we start to pluck excess water during rainy season as a national plan so that we can plough them back when we have a drought.

“As the world is evolving, we cannot be doing otherwise. So, as a state, we are already poised and positioned for the next level. Mr President, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given a marching order for food insecurity and Niger State wants to have 10% of the total landmass of Nigeria.

“So, we have to collaborate with our neighbouring states with the Federal Government in the SABC initiative of the AfDB and also with the Livestock Investment Programme of the government of Nigeria. So these are the benefits.”

Speaking on insecurity in parts of the state, Governor Bago said those willing to invest in the state have no reason to be afraid anymore as the government was already taking proactive measures to address the issue.

He said the government’s plan is to take over all lands currently housing bandits across the state and put them into economic use.

He said the government has discovered that most of the land currently being occupied by the bandits are not governed and therefore plans to take over such land for vast agricultural purpose.

The governor also disclosed that the state government has banned mining activities in the state, while making arrangements to create ranches for cattle, adding that in the next six months be planting about 10 million trees across the state.

He said further that the state government has banned mining in the state and will no longer allow those involved to operate in the state even when they come with a license from the Federal Government.

Bago stated that a relationship exists between mining and cattle as the miners often use the cattle to carry their products away from mining sites.

He also said that the state government has entered into an agreement with some state governments in the southwestern part of the country on the stoppage of cattlemen to the South.

The governor said: “We have agreed that cattle will no longer be transported to the South. They will stop at Mokwa where we are setting up a processing plant which will process them before they are transported to the south.”

APC-USA plans rally to welcome Tinubu to US, UNGA

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC-USA) have organised a rally to welcome President Bola Tinubu to the United States for the United Nations General Assembly holding in New York next week.

The rally, which is scheduled to be held in front of the Nigeria House in New York, is being organised in collaboration with the various Tinubu Support Groups in the USA.

In a statement sent to The Nation by one of the organisers of the rally, Khairat Animashaun-Ajiboye, the APC asked all Nigerians resident in the country to honour the Nigerian leader when he arrives in the country on September 20.

The statement quoted the national secretary and the national publicity secretary of the APC USA chapter, Feyi Tijani and Ismaila Maigyara respectively as saying that members of many support groups, and community leaders in New York and New Jersey are excited to welcome the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to New York.

The secretary quoted Tijani as saying, “APC-USA under the chairmanship of Professor Labinjo has a long history with the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigeria Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that dated back to Alliance for Democracy (AD).

“From AD we followed the President to Action Congress (AC), from AC to Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and from ACN to All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013. Also, we have over the past 20 years worked closely with the President’s close allies and leaders like Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Segun Osoba, Otunba Henry Oladele Ajomale, Senator Lawal Shuaibu, Hon Abike Dabiri, many past and current governors, and other leaders and members of the party.”

According to him, the APC-USA contributed immensely to the campaign and election of President Tinubu and had made commitments to continue to support his administration in all areas necessary.

Also speaking, the national publicity secretary of the APC USA chapter, Ismaila Maigyara said all Nigerians are invited to the rally in honour of Mr. President and welcome him to New York on Wednesday, September 20 in front of the Nigeria House located at 828 2nd Avenue, New York, NY, 10017 at 4:00 pm.

Maigyara called on Nigerians to come together to support the President and his renewed hope agenda which he believes will lead to the rapid development of Nigeria.

He warned APC leaders and members, as well as members of the public against unscrupulous, dishonest, and dishonourable individuals who are out to manipulate them and collect their hard-earned money by planting high-level deception to corporate bodies, individuals, and groups who unknowingly may fall for their tricks and deceptions.

Maigyara reassured that the rally in support of President Bola Tinubu has the necessary approval and permit of the New York City Police Department and was planned with good intent to promote the image and the unity of Nigeria.

Dr. Maigyara thanked Chief Emeka Molokwu, Hon Khairat Animashaun-Ajiboye, Hon Folashade Olumo, Hon Bisoye Oladejo, Hon Ololade Elulade (ELOT BABA), Prince Henry Adesanya, Mr. Adeleke Lamoriyu, Mr. Ayo Olashege, Professor Adesegun Labinjo and Honorable Dele Alade for their work and support for the rally.

  • Tribunal judgement confirms Tinubu’s election is divine —Tallen

Tribunal judgement confirms Tinubu’s election is divine —Tallen

Former women affairs minister, Pauline Tallen, says the affirmation of President Bola Tinubu’s election by  Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal is an  indication that his victory is divine.

Tallen, also a former Plateau deputy governor and a one-time state minister for Science and Technology, said this when she spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

‘’The emergence of Tinubu as Nigeria’s President is a God project for the nation’s unity and stability.

“Recall the issues that preceded his election, like the controversial naira redesign, the vicious campaign of calumny, among others which would have truncated his ambition, but somehow, in spite of all these odds against him during the campaign, he still emerged as the winner.

“This is a confirmation that leadership comes from God and when God designs it, nobody can stop it,” she said.

She congratulated Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima, national chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje and all members of the party, for the victory at the tribunal.

Tallen called on the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of Labour Party to accept the court’s verdict and join hands with Tinubu to build Nigeria.

She said that Tinubu had in his reaction to the judgment, invited the opposition to join him which demonstrated his magnanimity and willingness to work for Nigeria’s development.

‘’Tinubu is imbued with a rare commitment to political inclusiveness, from his recent ministerial appointment it is obvious that they were not strictly for APC members.

“In any contest, there is bound to be a winner and a loser; it is okay that they challenged the election’s outcome in court, which is within their constitutional rights but Tinubu is now reconfirmed by the tribunal as president.

“In the interest of Nigeria, if we all love Nigeria and we all plan to serve and build this country to an enviable height, we should all join hands and build a nation of our collective dreams.

“They have their ideas but Tinubu also has his ideas. If we all put these ideas together on the table and work with him, I believe we will all be better off for it,” she said.

Tallen also urged those insinuating that the tribunal’s judgment was manipulated to jettison the idea and accept the court’s ruling as a victory for Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and the rule of law.

“Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, the opposition, especially, has the right to think the way they do but as I said earlier, for national interest and Nigeria’s unity, we should accept the court’s verdict,” she said.

Tallen described Tinubu as a detribalised Nigerian and exemplary leader, who had followers all over the country, and had paid his dues to deserve becoming Nigeria’s president.

She expressed confidence that Tinubu’s presidency would make positive impact on Nigeria in terms of economic and infrastructure development, notwithstanding the temporary economic hardships caused by fuel subsidy removal on the people.

“The prevailing pains can be likened to the pains of a woman in labour, everything ends as soon as she puts to birth, and immense joy follows suit.

“Looking at the antecedents of Tinubu as Lagos State Governor, I strongly believe that he is an exemplary leader and achiever, a good economist, who always works to succeed against all odds in any situation in which he finds himself.

“We know very well that he is a man that is self-made, who did not clamour for this office to enrich himself. He is not a hungry man, who came to enrich himself. I strongly believe that God will use him to make Nigeria better,’’ she said.

Tallen also expressed confidence that Tinubu would not only carry every part of the country along in his administration, but would also ensure that the 35 per cent affirmative action for women was implemented to the letter.

She said that although women did not get up to 35 per cent in Tinubu’s ministerial appointments, there were still many appointive positions underway for them as it must not be ministerial appointments alone.

“There are other appointments like ambassadorial, boards of MDAs and many more that are underway. The President is a man who cherishes women empowerment and is also a man of his own word, so I pray that he does not fail us,” she added.

  • Nigerians expect much from Tinubu’s team, says Osinkolu

Nigerians expect much from Tinubu’s team, says Osinkolu

Dr. Olusegun Osinkolu is the Patron of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu Vanguard.  In this interview with RASAQ IBRAHIM, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain speaks on governance in Ekiti, President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet and challenges before the administration.

President Bola Tinubu recently sworn in members of the Federal Executive Council. What are your expectations from them?

My expectations are not different from that of other Nigerians, which are for them to deliver democracy dividends to the people, and to also bring a paradigm shift to governance and make it one that can bring prosperity. We can’t afford to be moving through a cycle of suffering and vicious poverty. They must break away from the past by shunning corruption, tackle the cankerworm of insecurity, banditry and kidnapping. They must usher in a new Nigeria where things work perfectly like in the 50s and 60s when the African continent was looking up to Nigeria as the giant that would provide shelter and set the pace of development for them. They must make Nigeria a place where local oil refineries can work without sabotage; a Nigeria where we can trust our leaders and make our youths productive, rather than allowing them to waste away due to pervasive unemployment. They must give us a Nigeria where fuel and food prices will be affordable to all Nigerians; a new Nigeria where we can all sleep with our two eyes closed.  The new cabinet members would be the most watched and most monitored Federal Executive Council in Nigeria’s history. They have to be circumspect of what history will say about them by working hard in synergy to make Nigerians happy.

You spoke about delivery and this depends largely on competence. How do you rate the competences of the new ministers?

Majority of them are accomplished politicians, technocrats and bureaucrats, who had done creditably well in their past assignments. The new FEC is populated with individuals with strong backgrounds in the corporate world, politics and civil service. Some are from the civil service and some are accomplished politicians, so it was a well-balanced one. I can point to over 85% of them who are very competent based on past records and in terms of delivery.

Some Nigerians seemed to have lost faith in the politicians, but the likes of the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu did well as a Governor of Kebbi State. Nigerians are still remembering with nostalgic feelings how he revolutionised rice production in Kebbi with Kebbi Rice in partnership with Lagos State Government, likewise his former colleague in Jigawa State, Mohammed Abubakar Badaru who is now the Minister of Defence. You could see that former Governor Badaru did so well to provide security in Jigawa State. There were no preponderant cases of kidnapping, banditry and insurgency in his state like other contiguous states in Northern Nigeria. Former Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola also did marvelously well in the areas of payment of salaries and pensions to Osun workers. He increased the state’s IGR and provided many landmark infrastructures. Among the technocrats, Prof. Ali Pate has paid his dues in the field of medicine. His works had assumed an international dimension. He had performed so many responsibilities at the international level.  The same thing can be said about Yusuf Tuggar, now manning the Foreign Affairs Ministry.  So, these are very good people that parade very rich antecedents who should not betray the confidence reposed in them.

With 48 ministers, don’t you think Tinubu’s government is over bloated?

No, I don’t think so. Don’t forget that we have over 200 million people with over 200 ethnic groups. How could someone think that 48 ministers will be too bloated to administer this number of citizens? I think I agree with President Tinubu’s position that removing burdens of drudgery and overconcentration of powers in some ministries will help the performance of the ministers. We can’t continue to make some ministries too powerful and those at the helms of affairs will later find it difficult to deliver. But if those ministries are streamlined the way he had done and the burdens become lighter and the ministers there can deliver, the better for Nigeria. Nigerians are expecting good results from the President and they shouldn’t allow him to approach governance using the same old pattern and still expect that he will achieve a different and better result. Things are not done that way.

The President also created some new ministries. Do you think that was necessary?

I agree perfectly with the explanations Mr. President gave to defend his actions. Nigeria has lost a lot of revenues due to the lumping of the Ministries of Information with that of Arts, Culture and Tourism. But now, we have the Ministry of Information, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy. With this, we will be able to maximise our potential in these sectors rather than just allowing them to waste away. With what President Tinubu has done in the areas of culture and tourism, Nigeria is now going the way of Kenya, Rwanda, Isreal and Saudi Arabia that make tourism the bedrock of their economies. Nigeria as big as it is can’t continue to depend only on oil for survival. Let us also look at the billions we are wasting in the maritime sector due to insecurity and lack of focus. But with the creation of the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, Nigeria will develop that sector and that will make it one of the hubs of its economy. Some experts even said Nigeria has the potential to generate N11 trillion from that sector yearly and now is the time to prove this. Despite the fact that Nigeria is not placing priority on entertainment as a wing of the creative industry, the country makes about $1.8 billion, approximately N730 billion in 2020 as GDP. Now that the focus is on the sector with the creation of a new ministry, we will do better in the 2023-24 fiscal year in terms of GDP measurement.

Your party, APC will be going into governorship elections in Kogi, Bayelsa and Imo States. What is your expectation?

My expectations are that we must retain Kogi and Imo States, while also going ahead to reclaim Bayelsa from the PDP. The APC candidate, David Lyon won in Bayelsa in the last governorship election, but lost the seat to PDP through judicial pronouncement. The APC had been able to establish a stronghold in Kogi with Governor Yahaya Bello winning two times to spend eight years. Governor Hope Uzodinma also came through judicial verdict like we had in Bayelsa. But whichever way it comes, APC remains the most organised and strongest party in Nigeria. I am particularly happy with what his Excellency and National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje is doing by ensuring that the party is united. He has been reaching out to aggrieved members to settle some disputes that are ripping our party apart. Today, former Governor Rochas Okorocha and Governor Uzodinma are on the same page. Similar efforts are being made in two other states to enhance unity in APC. In essence, the party must be united to be able to win and that the leadership is doing. So, I am confident the party will do   excellently well in these states.

After 10 months in the office, Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, just constituted his cabinet. Has this slowed down governance?

I don’t think so. Don’t forget that the bulk of the jobs of governance are done by the top civil servants. I had been in the system before under the first term of Governor Kayode Fayemi when I was the Managing Director of Ekiti Investment Holdings. If you go to Ekiti State and feel the pulses of the people, you will know that they are pleased with the pace of development under Governor Abiodun Oyebanji. I think he has brought about some unusual conduct into governance by his humility and closeness to the grassroots. The best legacy he is laying is the fact that the local governments and the local council development areas are now enjoying a high level of financial independence to execute projects on their own. In fact, it has become like a competition among the local government chairmen and that is good for the system. I have also seen some benefits of continuity in governance under him, with the completion of the Bus Terminal in Ado Ekiti and the Ekiti State Traditional Rulers’ Chamber also in Ado Ekiti. Governor Fayemi started all these projects. I have also seen some road projects being completed like the Oke Oniyo road in Ado Ekiti. The Omisanjana- Deeper Life Camp-Ikere road bypass nears completion. The governor has completed the renovation of Ilawe-Erinjiyan-Ikogosi road among others. We are also seeing massive dredging of waterways and channelisation projects to control flooding. So, I don’t think the delay in the constitution of the full cabinet had really affected governance negatively.

Some local council development areas were created by the past administration. Do you consider this a benefit to Ekiti or not?

Just like I said earlier, the local government system is becoming more beneficial and more invigorated under Governor Oyebanji and the LCDAs have been a source of benefit to our people. If you go to some of these LCDAs, they are even contesting in terms of projects’ execution with substantive local governments.

It seems opposition parties are gradually becoming very weak in Ekiti State. Don’t you think this will make the current government complacent?

Well, I am one of those who believe that strong and virile opposition is needed to strengthen democracy. But the opposition too can’t behave irresponsibly when the ruling party is doing the right thing. Though I don’t want to delve into the issues of opposition in Ekiti or in Nigeria because I am not one of their members, but when it comes to Ekiti politics, the kind of politics being played by Governor Oyebanji may make it difficult for the opposition to be attacking him because he is very fair and inclusive. He has maintained cordial relationships with the arrowheads of opposition parties in Ekiti. Just recently, he visited two prominent opposition figures and former governors: Segun Oni and Ayo Fayose. He has also been getting advice from them on how best to deliver for our people. Most interesting is the fact that members of opposition were appointed as Special Advisers in his cabinet in the spirit of inclusivity, so it is a micro Unity Government that Governor Oyebanji is running in Ekiti.

  • Tinubu will make Nigeria great again, says PDP BoT member

Tinubu will make Nigeria great again, says PDP BoT member

Member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Southsouth geo-political zone, Charles Idahosa, has assured President Bola Tinubu will make Nigeria great again.

He also hailed the judgment of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), which affirmed the election of President Tinubu.

Idahosa, a former Edo Commissioner for Information, spoke in an interactive session with reporters to mark his 70th birthday.

He noted that Nigeria’s last general elections were victims of the social media, which produced unverifiable news.

He stated that some people who were insisting that a presidential candidate must be victorious in Abuja to be declared the overall winner should note that the people in Abuja were not more Nigerians than the people in other states of the country.

PDP’s BoT member said: “The PEPT gave a perfect judgement. The presidential election was a victim of the social media. A lot of things happened on the social media that you could not verify. How can somebody tell me that if you do not win Abuja, you will not win the presidency? People in Abuja, are they different from other Nigerians? I do not understand.

“Some people put sentiments in the PEPT’s judgment. Some persons said there was watermark, others claimed that the judgment was prepared by Babatunde Fashola, while some alleged that Justice Mary Odili (rtd.) wrote the judgment. I have read the judgement and it is very clear, not ambiguous. I believe that President Tinubu will make Nigeria great again.”

Idahosa, while speaking on the September 2024 governorship election in Edo, assured that the poll would be free and fair with the innovations by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He said: “The next Governor of Edo State must be a home boy, not an imported financial magician. This time round, nobody will come to tell us he is this or that in Lagos or London. He must be one of us who knows everywhere, not an imported magician.”

  • Tinubu orders reform of housing sector

Tinubu orders reform of housing sector

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to reform the housing sector.

The mandate also includes reforming the land use reform which his administration said is long overdue.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa said this in Abuja when he received the President and members of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) who paid him a courtesy call.

He said his ministry is in the process of producing an actionable plan that will drive the process of actualizing these goals of the administration.

Dangiwa: “When it comes to housing, we are here to solve a lot of problems together. They include the challenges of rapid urbanization, housing production, mitigating housing deficits in the country, enforcement of housing quality and standards, and informal settlements. In addressing these challenges, NIOB is a professional body and in the best position to work with the Ministry of Housing to proffer solutions to the challenges.

“We are in the process of producing an actionable plan that will drive the process of actualizing these goals of the administration. Housing Reform is a major aspect of the process. President Bola Tinubu has mandated the Ministry to form a committee that will ensure that the entire housing sector is reformed so that it will function effectively.

“Another assignment is reforming the land use reform. This issue is long overdue. The ministry has started discussing who the members should be. Interestingly, the NIOB featured prominently in all of these set goals. So, you (NIOB) will be included in the committee as one of the drivers that will ensure the success of the reform.

“You discussed mortgage. The FG will have to strengthen the mortgage institution, i.e. the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN). We intend to reinforce it and ensure that it is re-capitalized so that it can function effectively to deliver its mandate of providing affordable mortgages for Nigerians. This is yet another area that I assure you that the government will collaborate with the NIOB.

“On the issue of the National Building Code, the Code has already been done but we are making a few amendments to it. What we want professional bodies like yours to do is identify the issues that ought to be adjusted in the Building Code for effective utilization. We will be ready to accept your professional suggestions.”

In his speech, the NIOB president, Alderton Ewa urged the Minister to liaise with the legislative arms of government (Senate and House of Representatives) for the enactment of the National Building Code, which is one of the major challenges that is affecting building production in the country that leads to so many building collapses.

He also asked the Minister to create an avenue where all the professional bodies under the building environment would come together for the success of building production in the country.

Ewa pleaded with the Minister to liaise with the Mortgage bank to encourage them to give loans to real estate developers at affordable interest rates and collateral which should be monitored for refund.
