  • I’ve no preferred candidate, says Tinubu

National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said yesterday that he has no preferred candidate among the 33 members seeking its ticket for the July election.

“I’ve    put my own political gear in neutral. I have no anointed candidate,” Tinubu said in Lagos during the party’s congress.

He added: “everyone there aspiring and contesting are very dear members and they deserve the right to participate. About 33 of them in all and we only need one of them for governorship. We have had leadership discussions

“I am very happy and proud of our party, All Progressives Congress, the APC. We are demonstrating to the people across the country that we are a law-abiding political party; that we believe in the tenets of democracy and that we demonstrate the openness in the congresses across the country.”

Citing Lagos State as an example of how congresses should be conducted ,Tinubu said:”Things are going according to plan, very open and transparent process.

“They queue up behind whoever they want, no pre-ordained candidate. The turn-out is very impressive.

“The membership of the party is growing in leaps and bounds and open to all democrats who want to identify with us.

“This is one of the best ways to energize the party that is almost remaining dormant at the grassroots level and you could see the sense of belonging and the energy and activities of the ordinary people. It is a great joy for me.”

He pleaded with party members especially those aggrieved in any way to “write to the party headquarters and just don’t take laws into their hands.”

Continuing, he said: “I am proud of what is happening. I am very proud of the leadership. The leaders are for everybody; no bias, and they should move on peacefully and help the country to grow and progress democratically.”

  • Faparusi hails Buhari, Tinubu for neutrality

Former House of Representatives member, Hon. Bamidele Faparusi, has praised the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for not having a preferred  candidate among the 33 aspirants vying for its ticket in the July governorship election in Ekiti State .

Faparusi specifically lauded the position canvassed by the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, that President Muhammadu Buhari and the Southwest zonal  leaders would not back any of the aspirants ahead of the May 5 primary.

The aspirants had attended a meeting in Lagos last Friday  at the behest of the zonal leaders.

The meeting was convened by Tinubu, in conjunction with former governors Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun) and the National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Chief Pius Akinyelure, on the need for a transparent primary to reduce  crisis in the party ahead of the July 14 governorship poll.

Faparusi while briefing some delegates on the outcome of the Lagos parley on Monday said he understands the interest of the zonal leaders in the primary and their intention to witness the shadow election as observers.

The governorship aspirant said this would make the primary to be transparent and credible in view of the fear that the election could be skewed in favour of any aspirant.

Faparusi insisted that the party has no reason to fail in the coming election, owing to lacklustre performance of Governor Ayodele Fayose and his inability to pay salaries of workers.

He said the party has good chances of winning the election, only if a popular and acceptable  candidate is chosen to fly the party’s flag.

He said: “We must de-emphasise this phantom ‘federal might’ thing. You can only be privileged to deploy ‘federal might’ when the right candidate emerges.

“I have been in politics for some time and I know there is no power that can override the collective will of the people.

“President Muhammadu Buhari was able to conquer the power of the presidency in 2015 presidential race because of his electrifying popularity across Nigeria.

  • Tinubu condoles with Ajimobi, Tambuwal

ALL Progressives Congress National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commiserated with Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi over the death of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Michael Adeyemo.

He also mourned with Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal over the demise of his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Imam Dalhatu Imam.

Adeyemo died last Friday after a heart attack. He was 47 years old.

Tinubu said in his letter to Ajimobi: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Michael Adeyemo.

“For a young man with such a promising career to be so plucked by death leaves a sour taste in the mouth. But who are we to question God?

“Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences. I also extend, through you, my condolences to the family left behind by the deceased, to his colleagues in the state assembly and to the government and people of Oyo State.

“I pray that God Almighty grant repose of his soul and grant his family the strength to bear this loss.”

In the letter to Tambuwal, the APC national leader said: “Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences over the death of your Special Adviser, Media, Malam Imam Dalhatu Imam.

“His death was a loss not only to you, the government and people of Sokoto State and Kaduna, his home-state, but a loss to all of us.

“I knew the deceased since his time at THISDAY as Political Editor, through when you were Speaker of the House of Representatives and he your Special Adviser.

“He was deeply committed to his work and to the journalism profession. His death is a loss also to that profession.

“I wish I could say something that might erase the sadness and loss but words fail us at such times. All I can say is that you take heart. I pray that Almighty Allah grant his wives and children the strength to carry through this moment.

“I also pray that Allah grant him Aljanna Fridaus.”

  • Our problem is lack of understanding of history-Tinubu

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu had said that the problem with the country is lack of understanding of history.

He stated this during the public presentation and launch of the biography of Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji  Muhammadu  iliyasu Bashar in Birnin kebbi.

“Our problem in Nigeria is not about poor economy, but lack of understanding of difficulties Nigerians are going through,’’ Tinubu stated.

According to him, the destiny of each and every one is in the hands of God irrespective of who we are, or where we come from.

“Whether you are from West, South, North, nobody has control over what God has for our lives.”

He however charged traditional and religious leaders to preach peace and unity irrespective of their religions, tribes and geopolitical zones.

“There should be no tribal war; we must share boundaries, co-exist and share economic issues with ourselves.’’

Tinubu lunched 20 copies of the book for N20 million.

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, who chaired the event, said his presence was because of the relationship between the people of his constituency and the Gwandu Emirate.

He said he would continue to support any cause that would promote peace and unity of Nigeria.

Saraki commended late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, for initiating the writing of books to foster understanding and knowledge in the country, adding that the books will further brighten the future of Nigerian youths.

The event was attended by dignitaries from the various parts of the country, including Emirs from Jigawa, Niger, Nasarawa, and Ilorin.

  • Buhari, Tinubu, Saraki, Dogara attend SGF’s daughter’s wedding

•Buhari, Saraki, Dogara meet few days after impeachment threat

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday attended the wedding reception of the daughter of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha.

The wedding reception took place at the old Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

SGF’s daughter, Amanda Tolulope of Adamawa State was earlier in the day joined in Holy Matrimony to Otelemaba Tamunowariboko Westwood, Son of Westwood from Rivers State at the Family Worship Centre, Abuja.

Among those who attended the wedding reception included the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, who is the chairman of the occasion

The wedding reception was the first public function to be attended together by President Buhari, Saraki and Dogara few days after the lawmakers threatened to invoke Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution towards starting impeachment process against the President.

Also at the event were the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and National Chairman of APC, John Odigie-Oyegun.

Many state governors and federal cabinet members also attended the wedding reception.

Speaking with State House correspondents at the end of the reception, the SGF said: “It is a pride of a father that at one point in time you will be giving out your children in marriage or receiving bride into your home. And that is what has precisely happened to us today as a family. I feel very happy and very thrilled about it.

Asked what his advice will be to the new couple, he said “Basically, they have received a lot of inductions and trainings when they went through their pre-marital classes. But as a father, talking out of experience, I’m married for 29 years now, I can assure you that, I wouldn’t say I have done badly, my candid advice to them is that they should respect each other, think highly of each other; they should remain friends and as much as possible let them make God the centre piece of their home.

“If they have doubts about things happening around them, let them go back to the author of marriage Himself, which is God.

“So my advice to them is let them remain together through thick and thin. They should not take each other for granted.” he added

When asked how he feels giving out his daughter to another tribe, he said “Well, I am married to somebody from a different state all together. I come from Adamawa State while my wife comes from Osun State.

“So Amanda is not the first. It is a marriage of unity. Whenever I hear people talking about Nigeria breaking up, I just laugh. The foundations are deep. I have a brother-in-law who is Igbo. I have a brother-in-law who is Urhobo. So our home has always been a small Nigeria whenever we congregate,” he stated.

  • Tinubu: I am not the owner of Visionscape

ALl Progressive Congress Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has debunked reports and insinuations that he owns Visionscape, the foreign environmental utility group engaged by Lagos State Government for waste management.

He said he does not have a penny stakes in the firm, dismissing media reports the conglomerate belongs to him as untrue and false.

The former Lagos State Governor spoke on Friday evening while addressing members of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, also known as PSP operators, in his Bourdillon Ikoyi, Lagos residence, who submitted a petition to him.

“I beg to correct something and I think I have to do it publicly; the rumour I’ve heard all over the state and the social media is that I am the one who brought a foreign company.

“I am not the owner of Visionscape. Categorically, I’m telling you today, I have no penny…Yes, that is the truth,” Tinubu said

He said the decision to bring in the company to handle waste collection and management was solely that of Lagos state government and has nothing to do with him.

Tinubu however assured the operators he is concerned about their plights, promising to meet with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode in the shortest time possible to find a lasting solution to the waste management crisis in the state.

“I’m concerned as a leader, resident and a father in the state that heaps of refuse are gradually returning to Lagos.

“When driving around Lagos, I have seen a buildup of refuse. Be rest assured that we’re not going to allow that to happen.”

The Cleaner Lagos Initiative, he explained, was conceived with good intentions, stating “personally, I think Visionscape was brought in to address the complexities of waste collection and management in the state.

“It could be an experiment and I’m sure the governor too will be magnanimous enough to reverse such a decision if it’s not working,” Tinubu assured the operators.

Vice Chairman of the association, David Oriyemi, lamented the disengagement of PSP operators has led to loss of over 25,000 direct jobs, saying the 350 operators have suffered economic losses since the policy came on board.

He appealed to Tinubu to help prevail on Governor Ambode to consider their plights and reengage them since they have over a decade expertise in waste management.

  • Tinubu intervenes in waste managers, LASG rift

The  National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju  Bola Tinubu, says the lingering issue of waste management in Lagos State will soon be resolved.

Tinubu gave the assurance yesterday  in Lagos during a meeting with the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAM), otherwise known as PSP.

Tinubu pledged that  he would reconcile all the stakeholders in his capacity as Grand Patron of AWAM to promote the business interests of waste managers and wellbeing of Lagosians.

“It is disappointing and sad that at this stage of our development, the matter should result into petition. It should have been continuity and progress.

“Whatever is the shortcoming, we will correct it. This will get to the governor latest by Monday, April 30.

“It is sad to see Olusosun dumpsite in dangerous smoke. As a grand patron of AWAM, I am concerned driving around Lagos and seeing built up refuse.

“I must say it is a challenge that is coming back and we will not allow that to happen.

“The government and governor is trying and responsive but the complexity of Lagos is compounding by the day,” he said.

The former governor of Lagos State noted that AWAM members travelled abroad to learn international best practices in waste management and applied such in the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of AWAM, Mr Ola Egbeyemi, said that the waste crisis had become unprecedented, with increased volume of waste on Lagos streets, roads, highways and medians.

Egbeyemi, who was represented AWAM spokesman, Gbenga Adebola, said that the situation had taken Lagos back to pre-1999, when waste was competing with vehicular and pedestrian movements.

  • Be wary of Oshiomhole, APC chieftain tells Tinubu

    …Oshiomhole is our answer, ex-lawmaker

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress in Edo State, Mr. Blessing Edigin, has urged Chief Bola Tinubu to be wary of what he termed antics of former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Mr. Edigin said Oshiomhole is capable of dumping his benefactor after assuming power.

But a member of the zonal Executive Committee of the APC in the South South, Mr Ernest Irieka, said Oshiomhole is the answer to problems of APC

Edigin who spoke in an interview in Benin City urged Oshiomhole to stop unnecessary plot against Chief John Oyegun.

He urged the party members to ensure true democracy prevails and Chief Oyegun is returned as national chairman of the party.

Edigin opined that Oyegun is the best option to sustain peace that is prevalent in the polity.

His words, “I am not a stranger to Oshiomhole. I was in the forefront of his campaign team in 2007 when he finished his tenure as national president of the Nigerian Labour Congress(NLC) and was gunning for the governorship position in Edo State.

“He also had the support of many top personalities of the state extraction like the former governor of the state, Chief Lucky Igbinedion; High Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu and several others.

“As soon as he got into office it was this set of people, his benefactors, that he pounced on first, insulting them at every available opportunity for no just cause.

“Chief Bola Tinubu should be wary of Oshiomhole he is such a crafty chap that can do anything to dump his benefactors if the need be.

On his part, Irieka said the South South party leaders jettisoned Chief Oyegun not because of sentiment but the interest of the future of the party which he said was in danger.

“So I believe that we have a man who has the track record, we know how this man fought the god fathers in Edo. And godfatherism is the problem with Nigerian politics and that is how Edo became strong. Somebody was telling me how N25billion was saved by Oshiomhole while he was governor and that was how the roads in Benin were built. If he was not prudent with money he would not have built it.

“Now we have such a man and you expect us to waste his talent? No way. And I know that Oshiomhole will not insist that only Edo state remains under the APC, he will want to extend it beyond that, a few of our leaders in the South South have the same desire but the terrain is difficult. The South South is a very difficult region but Oshiomhole fought the PDP cabal which some people who are claiming to be APC leaders in the South South have failed to do in their state.

“If we don’t now manage the problems here well we are going to run into trouble and that is why we came together to say Oshiomhole is the answer. We are in the government at the Federal level, even some governors in the South South from the opposition party who have seen the need to join us but if they see we are not serious they will not come. So we need a man who is firm, honest, dogged, fearless to lead us to the promise land in the South South and that man is Oshiomhole” he stated.

  • Tinubu: party supremacy for its sake is nothing

To All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the essence of any party is to serve the people. The APC, he noted, has been doing that in the last three years. In his remark as the Special Guest of Honour at the 35th Annual Aminu Kano Memorial Symposium in Kano, Tinubu, said President Muhammadu Buhari has “spent tangible time clearing the mess institutionalised by past administrations as a national policy”. He was represented at the symposium entitled: “Democratic governance and the imperatives of party ideology and supremacy”, by Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

ACCOLADES and commendations are due the organisers of this event, the Aminu Kano Center for Democratic Research and Training. By extension to Bayero University, Kano, for having the vision and social commitment for having such a center that adds to the public discourse on the important issues that shape our nation.

This 35th Annual Aminu Kano Memorial Symposium and its theme: “Democratic governance and the imperatives of party ideology and supremacy” are indeed timely.

The two speakers today are among Nigeria’s finest thinkers regarding the issues at hand. Their addresses will be fertile ones giving us much to think about and much to do.

I am honoured simply to be invited to such an important event, let alone to be told that I am the Special Guest of Honour.

Our nation resides in a period of historic transition. We struggle to give birth to a better Nigeria. This also means we struggle to eject the malpractices of the past. That which is good contests against that which is not.

This contest has a high moral content and it is here that we turn to Aminu Kano for inspiration.  For it is here that Aminu Kano set the path we must follow.

This great man could have lived an easy life by exploiting for selfish objectives all the opportunities opened to a man of his great abilities and social station.

Instead, he devoted himself to the welfare of the people. He took the harder path because it was the true and correct one.

As Aminu Kano did, we must do!

The spirit of this great man must guide more than our deliberations here today. That spirit must direct our political intercourse and actions.

If we do so, we shall come to the realisation that democratic governance is more than going through the motions of mimicking certain processes and functions that have been deemed to connote democracy.

We must come to a better understanding of the moral and social principles that underlie these processes and functions. The existence of parties and of elections does not of itself mean democracy is present.  For form without substance is but an empty box, a hollow gift, not worth the giving.

Democratic governance must not only stick to proper form, it must bear proper fruits.

It must work for the betterment of the people and give them the chance to realise the best of their individual and collective aspirations in an atmosphere of peace, justice, and fair enterprise.

To me, this is what sets apart the current administration from prior governments of that other party.

The APC (All Progressives Congress) government may, at times be, imperfect in fulfilling the spirit of Aminu Kano, but, we are far from the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party), which has perfected the malign craft of giving selfish ambition primacy over the public good.

Consequently, the President Muhammadu-led Buhari government has spent inordinate time cleaning the rot and plugging the holes in the corrupt system the others had institutionalised as their strategic policy and national direction.

The APC has been working to steer our national ship from this awful direction in order that we may bring the people and their welfare into safe harbour.

Had the billions of dollars and trillions of naira that were stolen by past governments been used for the people, the nation would have been able to acquire the infrastructure and implement the programmes that bring greater development and economic justice to all.

Instead, the select few ate more than their bellies could contain. Distorting the cause of justice and hijacking the means of national welfare, they wildly enriched themselves and left the average Nigerian to dine on the passing wind.

Due to the drop in oil prices, this administration has had less money than those, which preceded it. However, it has done more with less.

The government has launched school feeding and stipend programmes for the poorest among us. These programmes have enabled millions to eat at least, one solid meal a day and for countless children to attend to their education instead of allowing the world to pass them by at an early age.

The programmes have also increased local economic activity by boosting consumer demand.

These things were done with the welfare of the people in mind.

When someone can do for you in three years what another did not even try in sixteen, any person with an open eye can see the difference between giver and taker, between friend and thief.

Of course, more needs to be done. I envision a time of even bolder action that modernises national infrastructure; implements an industrial plan that revives the textile sector and builds new industries; agricultural reform that provides farmers minimum incomes and greater access to credit; mortgage reform that opens the door to affordable housing for millions of families; pension reform that insulates our aged from poverty; and an expansion of the school feeding into every state and local government.

With regard to ‘Party ideology and supremacy’, let me state that ideology and principle must hold supremacy over supremacy.

I think Mallam Aminu Kano would have said the same thing in this regard.

Calling for party supremacy by and for its own sake is nothing but an invitation for people to install and then perpetuate themselves in positions of authority in the party.  They will arrogate power so that they come to dictate to the rest of the party instead of serving the collective will of party members.

Recent events in our party confirm this observation. Party discipline is vital but even more vital is adherence to humane and democratic ideals and principles.

With such principles, a party exercises internal democracy, which better enables it to govern democratically.

Without such adherence, a party becomes a vehicle to lord over its members, instead of a tool to empower its members to realise good and beneficial aims.

We must always remember that the political party is meant to serve the people and not the people to serve the party.

I dare not steal more time as you have come not to listen to me but to our designated speakers and their wisdom.

Again, I thank you for honouring me with this invitation and I look forward to a robust and enlightening symposium today.
