  • APC’s three years better than PDP’s 16 years, says Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has done better in the last three years than the 16 years rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), its national leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, said yesterday.

Tinubu spoke yesterday in Kano as a special guest of honour at the 35th Aminu Kano Annual Memorial Symposium organised by Mambayya House, Aminu Kano Centre for Research and Training, Bayero University, Kano (BUK).

The theme was: “Democratic governance and the imperatives of party ideology and supremacy.”

It was to honour Kano’s most influential politician of all times and the revered leader of the talakawa, the late Mallam Aminu Kano.

Speakers included former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, former governor of old Kaduna State Balarabe Musa, APC chief Usman Bugaje, eminent journalist Dapo Olorunyomi and Dr. Auwal Anwar. BUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Muhammad Yahuza Bello was represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof. Sagir Abbas. The ceremony was chaired by Malam Mahmud Othman.

The former Lagos State governor, who was represented by Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi, said: “When someone can do for you in three years what another did not even try in 16 years, any person with an open eye can see the difference between giver and taker, between friend and thief.”

He added: “The Buhari government has spent inordinate time cleaning the rot and plugging the holes in the corrupt system the others had institutionalised as their strategic policy and national direction.”

According to him, “the APC has been working to steer our national ship from this awful direction in order that we may bring the people and their welfare into safe harbour.

Tinubu explained that, “had the billions of dollars and trillions of naira that were stolen by past governments been used for the people, the nation would have been able to acquire the infrastructure and implement the programmes that bring greater development and economic justice to all

“Instead, the select few ate more than their bellies could contain. Distorting the course of justice and hijacking the means of national welfare, they wildly enriched themselves and left the average Nigerian to dine on the passing wind.”

He said more needed to be done. “I envision a time of even bolder action that modernises national infrastructure, implements an industrial plan that revives the textile sector and builds new industries, agricultural reform that provides farmers minimum incomes and greater access to credit.

“Mortgage reform that opens the door to affordable housing for millions of families, pension reform that insulates our aged from poverty and an expansion of the school feeding into every state and local government.”

Speaking on party ideology, Tinubu said ideology and principle must hold supremacy, adding that, “calling for party supremacy by and for its own sake is nothing but an invitation for people to install and then perpetuate themselves in positions of authority in the party.”

Tinubu described Malam Aminu Kano as a leader with high moral conduct, pointing out that, “this great man could have lived an easy life by exploiting for selfish objectives all the opportunities opened to a man of his great ability and social station.

“Instead, he devoted himself to the welfare of the people. He took the harder path because it was the true and correct one. As Aminu Kano did, we must do.”

Bauchi state Governor Mohammed Abubakar who was the Guest of Honour, noted that the questions raised at the symposium could best be answered by studying the life and times of Malam Aminu Kano who he described as upright and down-to-earth.

The Chief Host and Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje who was represented by Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Usman Alhaji Usman, urged politicians to aspire to follow the footsteps of Aminu Kano who he described as a man of integrity, honesty, simplicity and transparency.

In his paper Bugaje raised a few posers such as the difference between power and authority, legality and legitimacy, as well as eligibility and sustainability.

He argued that it was possible to have power without having authority, adding that it was also possible to be eligible, but not suitable for a given position or office.

In order to succeed, he said a leader must be knowledgeable, courageous and selfless; while adding that a leader must be like a shepherd who leads his cattle to a place of pasture and a good place where they can graze.

Olorunyomi said the need for the country to be in accord and be united in purpose.

In spite of the challenges that Rwanda recently went through, he said the country was able to bounce back into a unified entity where law and order reigned because of unity of purpose.

  • Tinubu blames Jonathan, others for country’s woes

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, National Leader, All Progressives Congress(APC) has again blamed past civilian administrations, especially the Jonathan government  for the nation’s economic woes.

Tinubu spoke at the 35th annual Aminu Kano Memorial Symposium, held in Kano on Tuesday. He was represented by Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Other speakers at the event were Mr Dapo Olorunyomi, Publisher of Premium Times, and a stalwart of the APC, Dr. Usman Bugaje.

The speakers examined `Democratic governance in Nigeria and the imperatives of party ideology and supremacy’.

Tinubu said that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan was the worst culprit in the pillaging of the nation’s resources.

He attributed the country’s current infrastructural deficit to the billions stolen by the past governments.

The APC national leader said that the present government under President Muhammadu Buhari had in the past three years been labouring hard to clean the rot and give the people a new lease of life.

“The APC government may, at times, be imperfect in fulfilling the spirit of Aminu Kano but we are far from the PDP, which has perfected the malign craft of giving selfish ambition primacy over the public good.

“Consequently, the Buhari government has spent inordinate time cleaning the rot and plugging the holes in the corrupt system they institutionalised as their strategic policy and national direction.

“The APC has been working to steer our national ship from this awful direction in order that we may bring the people and their welfare into safe harbour,’’ he said.

Tinubu said the billions of dollars and trillions of Naira stolen by past governments if used for the people, would have transformed the nation.acc

According to him, “the stolen money would have acquired the infrastructure and implement the programmes that bring greater development and economic justice to all.

“Instead, the select few ate more than their bellies could contain. Distorting the cause of justice and hijacking the means of national welfare.

“They wildly enriched themselves and left the average Nigerian to dine on the passing wind.”

He stated that the ruling government had less resources at his disposal than its predecessors due to the drop in oil prices, but have done more with the less it has.

The APC national leader said the theme of the symposium was apt and timely, commending the Aminu Kano Centre for Democratic Research and Training and Bayero University for the initiative.

Tinubu described Aminu Kano as a great man that could have lived an easy life by exploiting, for selfish objectives all the opportunities opened to him.

“Instead, he devoted himself to the welfare of the people. He took the harder path because it was the true and correct one.  As Aminu Kano did, we must do!

“The spirit of this great man must guide more than our deliberations here today. That spirit must direct our political intercourse and actions,’’ he said.

In his paper, Bugaje raised a few posers such as the difference between power and authority, legality and legitimacy, as well as eligibility and sustainability.

He argued that it was possible to have power without having authority, adding that it was also possible to be eligible, but not suitable for a given position or office.

“In order to succeed, he said a leader must be knowledgeable, courageous and selfless. A leader must be like a shepherd who leads his cattle to a place of pasture and a good place where they can graze,’’ Bugaje said.

In his own presentation, Olorunyomi stressed the need for the country to be in accord and be united in purpose.

He said that Rwanda, in spite of challenges it recently went through was able to bounce back into a unified entity where law and order reigned, adding such was achieved through unity of purpose. (NAN)

  • Tinubu has capacity to unite APC, says Kano lawmaker

The Chairman, House Committee on Education in Kano State House of Assembly, Dr. Baffa Babba Danagundi yesterday in Kano expressed optimism that All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the capacity to reconcile all aggrieved members.

Danagundi, who spoke at a  ceremony he organised in honour of Tinubu’s 66th birthday called on APC members and stakeholders across the country to repose confidence in the national leader’s capability to unite the party and lead it to victory as 2019 general elections approach.

He described Tinubu as a symbol of unity, “he is a de-tribalised leader. He has no boundary. He believes in everybody and he always strive to ensure that Nigeria remains one united country irrespective of our religious, ethnic and cultural differences.”

Danagundi said: “The Jagaban is a man that has the interest of this country at heart. That was why President Muhammadu Buhari gave him the mandate to bring back the lost glory of our great party.

“He is on the job and people like us believe in him. There is nobody Tinubu talks to that will not listen to him. He is a man of integrity and he has the respect of all of us. I believe that those who have been offended in one way or the other will have a reason to bury the hatchet.”

Danagundi, who mobilised APC leaders from across the 44 local governments to witness the ceremony, said the idea behind the birthday party was to give Tinubu’s loyalists who could not make it to Lagos the opportunity to celebrate the political juggernaut.

The lawmaker, who is representing Kano Municipal constituency also  endorsed the second-term bid of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

He insisted that, “come 2019, there is no vacancy in Aso Rock; there is no vacancy in Kano Government House. President Buhari and Governor Ganduje has performed creditably and I call on Nigerians and the good people of Kano State to rally round the two leaders.”

  • Tinubu advises Nigerians: don’t accept PDP’s apology

APC stalwart condemns bad belle letters

    Buhari, Osinbajo, governors extol celebrator

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday advised Nigerians not to accept the apologies tendered by the People s Democratic Party (PDP) for its mistakes while in power.

Speaking at his 66th birthday’s colloquium in Lagos, the former lagos State governor described the apology tendered last week byPDP National Chairman Uche Secondus as “deceitful”, meant to hoodwink Nigerians to get a political advantage.

He said the apology cannot change the effect of the damage already done to the economy.

”Nigerians should not accept PDP’s apologies, they are corrupt, they lied, they falsified, they changed figures.

“For 16 years, they made fake promises, gave us fake figures, and they tell us, ‘Don’t talk about it’.

“It is like, after catching a thief and he tells you, ‘Don’t look at me, go and steal your own’. We are soldering on. We have a good leader to rely on. We have hope.”

At the colloquium, which is the 10th edition, were President Miuhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, host Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and many other governors, lawmakers, ministers, past governors, past ministers, traditional rulers, top industrialists and other categories of people and associates of the celebrator.

The former governor also chided (although without making direct reference to him) former President Olusegun Obasanjo for writing a letter advising President Muhammadu Buhari not to contest in 2019, besides castigating his administration.

Tinubu said it was was full of bile.

He added: “My grandmother used to send me to a letter writer. Someone is writing letters these days, a letter of politics as if they have never been there before. Bad belle letters.

“The ship of state was about to wreck, but President Buhari steered the ship back. The voyage is the voyage of hope. We are reinventing and re-directing Nigeria. It is not an easy voyage to embark on.”

An excited Tinubu was full of praises for the President, the vice president, governors, legislators and other dignitaries who came to honour him. He also thanked his wife, Oluremi, “for tolerating hme”, adding that she had no choice.

He applauded Ambode for his exceptional commitment to the progress and economic development of Lagos State.

In an obvious reference to the endorsement of the governor for a second term by stakeholders, Tinubu said after many work, “the result is more work”.

He also hailed the cordial relations between the governor and his deputy, Dr. Idiat Adebule.

Acknowledging Ambode’s achievements, Tinubu said: “I can see what the government is doing with so little. It has produced results.”

The former governor traced the genesis of the Buhari administration to the epic battle to effect a change in the polity, stressing that Nigeria has reaped the dividends.

He said: “We came as APC leaders with a lot of hope. We were discussing. We believe in ourselves and Nigeria, that we can change Nigeria. And we are still going to do it again. It came with challenges. Our logo is not honey or sugar, but broom; a united Nigeria against terrorism, corruption, insecurity and for the revival of the economy.”

Tinubu disagreed with people who said the APC should stop reminding Nigerians about the corrupt activities of the Jonathan administration. He said a great lesson could be learnt from the perfidy of the former ruling party.

He said: “They say we should not talk about corruption. What should we talk about? If we don’t talk about it, what is the lesson to all Nigerians?”

Tinubu, who thanked Nigerians for their patience and support for the APC government, said the PDP should not return to power to continue what he called the looting of the economy.

He added: “Forget those parties. They won’t come back. We did not envisage that there would be no such challenges. So, we report back to Nigerians about what we found on ground. We did not say that there would be no challenges because, even America is facing challenges.

“PDP looted and wasted our resources. They misused our resources. There is a clear understanding here. There is a difference between us and them, a difference between night and day.”

Tinubu, who spoke on the importance of a re-invigorated pension scheme, promised to write prepare a technical paper for the President on the crucial matter.

He added: “The challenge of the economy is on. We should consider micro-credit. We should return to the mortgage culture to reduce corruption. We need to rework the pension. I will submit a proposal on how we can stimulate the economy. We don’t have to pay for a house of N10 million in one day and with cash. We need mortgage. This would discourage corruption.

“Hope is back. We have the audacity of it. We will bring back Nigeria to the path of progress and banish poverty forever.”

As Tinubu was called to the podium, his supporters in the hall launched it a song: “On your mandate we shall stand” Ambode joined to sing the song.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who chaired the event, acknowledged the celebrator as a “strategist” and “a fountain of ideas”, adding that he is a party chieftain and a friend whose care for the people and contributions to the progress of Nigeria and Africa should be appreciated.

The President arrived at the venue around 11.30 am, after inaugurating the Ikeja Terminal Bus Stop.

He flew in a chopper from the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport  to the Victoria Island venue.

He was accompanied by host Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, his wife, Bolanle, Mrs. Idiat Adebula and some ministers.

The colloquium’s theme is “Investing in people”. Some beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s social investment and school feeding programmes shared their experiences, stressing how the programmes had impacted their lives.

The highlights of the colloquium included a stage play directed by Ifeooma Fafunwa, titled: “The power of 200 million people”,  multimedia presentations on the theme, expositions on “Social Investment and Governance-The example of NSIP” by the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme by its National Programme Coordinator, Mrs. Abimbola Adesanmi and N-Power Programme and job creation by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Job Creation and Youth Employment, Afolabi Imoukhuede.

There were also the Northeast Makeathon by the Special Assistant to the Vice President on Internally Displaced Persons, Brimah Mohammed and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme by a presidential adviser, Maryam Uwais.

The toast to the celebrator was proposed by Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who said Tinubu’s life exemplified sacrifice, courage and hope, which the Christian season of lent symbolized.

Paying tribute to the former Lagos State governor, Obaseki said: “As a senator, two-time governor; in fact, a governor of governors; he was one of the most strategic politicians, who has shaped the progressive politics in the country and someone who has invested in people. I thank Asiwaju Tinubu for encouraging fresh thinking in our politics and encouraging people like me to enter politics.”

The vice president praised Tinubu for his heroic struggles, his resilience and numerous battles for the progress of society, saying the best time is yet to come”.

Prof. Osinbajo told the beautiful story of the conception, implementation and progress of the yearly colloquium in the last one decade, recalling that Tinubu’s aides when he was governor decided to use it as a platform for discussing matters of great national importance.

The vice president, who was Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in the defunct Tinubu administration, said the colloquium took off as part of efforts to sustain Tinubu’s struggles as a fighter and people-oriented politician.

He said Tinubu ran an unusual government in the Centre of Excellence, provoking a great deal of arguments, which he deliberately permitted to secure access to different shades of opinion.

Osinbajo recalled: “One of the issues that generated argument as it is still generating arguments today, was the Land Use Act. The Land Use Act generated arguments at the Government House, Ikeja among members of the State Executive Council; with people like myself, Wale Edun, Alake, Cardoso, Lai Mohammed. When Asiwaju was losing the argument, he retorted: ‘Why? Are you the person they voted for? He stormed out of the meeting. Then, he came back, only to see that we were still there. When he stormed out, he came back with some facts, after making some consultations.”

Hailing Tinubu for laying the foundation for progress, Osinbajo said he allowed the leaders he had made to develop, criticise and contradict his ideas.

The vice president thanked President Buhari for giving him the opportunity and a free hand to coordinate the social intervention programme of the administration.

He said to ensure transparency, an inter-ministerial group consisting of some ministers was set up to supervise the programe.

Osinbajo said the APC was determined to change the country by halting the personalisation of the commonwealth by a few corrupt politicians.

He said Buhari wanted to effect that change by fulfiling his campaign promises of security, economic revival, job creation and war against corruption.

The vice president added: “If we waited for long to give jobs, many would have given up. Therefore, we invested in agriculture and it has been a tremendous success. This has led to job creation. Like the President said of his native state, people are no more leasing out land to other farmers from outside Katsina. And I will add this joke, not only are more people now going to hajj; they are also taking more wives.”

Osinbajo said the Buhari administration paid attention to social security, despite the fall in the oil price and shrinking of national revenue. He said over 200,000 jobs had been provided, 300,000 in the pipeline and 300,000 are beneficiaries of the micro-loans

The vice president lamented that corruption has done serious damage to the economy, blaming the defunct PDP administration for the predicament.

He said: “The corruption of the previous five years destroyed our economy.” The Buhari administration will continue to decry the evil because the country cannot afford to go the same way, Osinbajo said.

He said the Treasury Single Account (TSA) exposed the corrupt tendencies of the past administration.

Osinbajo stressed: “People cornered resources of the people and used the resources against the people. We will not allow that. APC will continue to make a difference. In the period of abundance, the past administration claimed it spent only N139 billion in the three ministries of Power, Works And Housing. This administration has spent N560 billion at a time we are earning 50 per cent less than the previous revenue. They were stealing the money.”

Lamenting the impact of corruption on socio-economic development, he added: “No country that allows its resources to be plundered can become a great country.”

Noting that corruption is fighting back, the vice president said the government was determined to sustain the battle against graft.

He added: “Three billion US dollars was lost to the scam in the oil sector. That amounts to one trillion naira. We are using the same amount to construct the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Road, the Second Niger Bridge, Kano-Maiduguri Road, and Lagos-Abeokuta Road. Criminality must not be allowed. Criminals must be brought to book. We receive 50 percent less, yet, we spend more on social infrastructure. The government of Buhari has chosen to remain on the side of the people.”

President Buhari, who spoke after Osinbajo, threw the audience into laughter when he said he ordinarily should have nothing to say again after the legal luminary had made a brilliant speech that drew a loud ovation.

He said: “After the speech of the vice president, I wonder what else I would say. I would stick to my speech and I would rely on your judgment to see how I operate with such a brilliant vice president.”

Paying tribute to Tinubu, the President said: “I am here to celebrate the birthday of my friend and political partner. He is well known as a political strategist. I have come to see him as a man who cares about the people and I appreciate his contributions to the progress of the people of Nigeria and Africa.”

Lauding the organisers of the colloquium for the theme, President Buhari said Nigeria was approaching a new dawn where insecurity will give way to security, corruption will be defeated and prosperity will replace poverty.

He stressed the importance of investing in people, adding that, by doing so, tomorrow will be better than today and good will triumph over evil.

Buhari emphasised that his administration was laying a good foundation by bringing people from various ethnic groups to a peaceful relationship.

He said “we depend on people to govern”, adding that the government’s investment must touch the lives of the people.

Buhari said: “We seek to rebuild what was wrongly constructed. We must invest in people. Our investment in critical areas have impacted immensely on our people. We have set Nigeria on an irreversible direction of growth and development. We are resolute in our commitment to making Nigeria great.”

  • Testimonies, tributes for Tinubu at Colloquium

Nigerians from all walks of Iife yesterday converged on Eko Hotel & Suites to celebrate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 66th birthday. A colloquium was organised to mark the occasion. RAYMOND MORDI and LEKE SALAUDEEN capture the event.

The 10th edition of the Bola Tinubu Colloquium yesterday drew a galaxy of audience. At the Convention Centre venue of the intellectual discourse, organised to mark the 66th birthday of All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, were politicians, captains of industry, members of the diplomatic corps, government functionaries and beneficiaries of the Social Investment Programmes (SIPs), introduced by the APC-led Federal Government. The SIPs’ beneficiaries gave testimonies on how the scheme changed their fortunes. Many of the audience paid glowing tributes to the former Lagos State governor.

    He’s an exceptionally visionary

    politician, says Mohammed

INFORMATION, Culture & Tourism Minister Lai Mohammed yesterday described the All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as “an exceptionally visionary politician who has invested in many people”.

Speaking on how Tinubu had invested in people, the minister recalled how he made him Chief of Staff about 20 years back as Lagos governor.

“Not being from Lagos state, many people found it strange for him to have made me his Chief of staff.

“Today, I can say boldly that at least in the federal cabinet, we have those occupying positions who had served in his cabinet at one time or the other.

“We have the Vice President, myself, the Minister of Power Works & Housing, Raji Fashola and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

“If you also look at governor in many states today, whether it is Osun or elsewhere, they had worked with him in one capacity or the other.

The minister, who said he felt elated about the day, wished the celebrant a long life in the service of the nation and mankind.

Lagos Speaker: his vision, ideas led to creation of modern Lagos

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described the celebrator as the founder of modern Lagos.

The pioneering efforts of the APC stalwart at raising the standard of governance in the state, have taken the Centre of Excellence to loftier heights.

He said: “Asiwaju combines his vision, ideas and leadership qualities to laid a solid foundation for subsequent administrations after him to build on and the result is what we have today – a modern Lagos that is moving rapidly from a mega city to a smart city; the fourth biggest economy in Africa moving towards being the third biggest economy in the continent.

“His vision gave us Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, who performed well as Governor of Lagos State and now the indefatigable Akinwunmi Ambode whose performance as Governor of Lagos State for just a little over three has made him the number one state Governor in Nigeria making Lagos the role model for its counterparts not only in Nigeria but in the entire continent of Africa.”

According to him, “it is to credit of Asiwaju’s leadership quality and his ingenuity that gave him the courage that those who came after him will continue to build solid structure and the foundation he had laid.

“Today, Asiwaju has written his name in gold and there is no doubt about the fact that Lagos history cannot be complete without Asiwaju, the architect and founder of modern Lagos.

“On behalf of my colleagues at the Lagos State House of Assembly, I wish you more healthy years in the service of this great state and the country at large.”

How social investment schemes impacted our lives, by beneficiaries

IT was testimony time for some beneficiaries of the Social Investment Programmes (SIPs) introduced by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government.

They took turns to give insight into what they have benefitted from the various schemes in the last two years.

It was at the 10th Bola Tinubu Colloquium with the theme: “Investing in People”, and anniversary of his 66th birthday at the Eko Hotel, Lagos

One of them, nien-year-old Muhammad Anas Ishaq and a beneficiary of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, sent the audience roaring with laughter with his testimony.

The primary school pupil from Tundun-Wada in Kaduna State recounted how he used to stay away from school but that the free meal provided by the authorities rekindled his interest in education.

Ishaq said when he informed his friend who used to stay away from school, he too started coming to school regularly.

He thanked the Buhari administration for the free-meal programme and urged the government to sustain the laudable programme.

Mrs. Janet Ekerette Udoh, who supplies eggs for the implementation of the school feeding programme in Akwa Ibom State, said many farms are flourishing with increased employment capacity, because of the school feeding programme.

Reliving the success story, she said the food items for the programme are sourced from the local communities where the institutions are domiciled.

Similarly, Mrs. Rosemary John Ignatius, a food vendor, said many women, who hitherto had no bank accounts have imbibed the banking culture.

Her words: “Since we started the programme, people who had nothing to do with banks in the past now visit them (financial institutions) every 10 days, to withdraw their earnings.”

Mrs. Ignatius said she is glad to be part of the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, because it has given her the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to her community and enhanced her business.

The vendor, a caterer at Ikotidaha, Ibiono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, said that with her years of experience as a professional cook, she has been able to deliver well-cooked meals to the pupils promptly and efficiently.

Mrs. Kehinde Awodele, a trader from Igbo-Ora, Oyo State, a beneficiary of the Federal Government’s N5,000 monthly Conditional Cash Transfer Programme (CCTP), said that through the scheme, she has been able to raise money to grow her business.

The fish trader said that prior to the commencement of the CCTP, she and her household were struggling to make ends meet.

But through the CCTP, where she receives N10, 000 every two months, Mrs. Awodele has been able to join a savings group in her community which has helped to save enough towards enhancing her business.

The Minister of State, Budget & National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, said the Federal Government introduced the SIPs to tackle poverty and to ensure an equitable distribution of income among vulnerable groups, especially, women and children.

  • Buhari, Osinbajo, Ambode hail Tinubu at 66

President Muhammadu Buhari, his Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and Lagos State Governor, Mr.  Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday took turns to eulogise the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he clocked 66.

Speaking at the 10th Bola Ahmed Tinubu Colloquium, organised to commemorate the former Lagos Governor’s birthday, President Buhari described Tinubu as a political patriot who has over the years invested in building people and creating future leaders of tomorrow.

“I call on Nigerians to join me to celebrate Asiwaju, a man who is widely known as a political strategist and I have come to see him as a man who cares about people and is a fountain of ideas for the economy and for the common man and woman. He is a true democrat and we appreciate his contribution for Nigeria’s capital progress.

“Asiwaju has invested in people because he believes that tomorrow will be better than today and good will one day triumph over evil,” Buhari said.

Commending the concept of the Colloquium and describing the theme, ‘Investing In People’ as apt, the President said the Federal Government over the last two years had initiated programmes and policies that have made direct impact on the people, adding that the nation can only grow when government invests in its people.

Professor Osinbajo in his address said he was proud to have garnered experience in public service under the tutelage of Tinubu when he was Governor of Lagos State, noting that it was during that period the foundation of development currently ongoing in Lagos was laid.

He particular alluded to the concept of the Land Use Charge which Tinubu’s administration initiated, saying that despite the challenges and dissenting voices, he (Tinubu) successfully defended, a move which, according to him,  made Lagos better for it.

“When we introduced the Land Use Charge, which was the foundation of the development we see in Lagos today, some of us believed that it should not be introduced at all, others believed it should be introduced. I remember we were having a meeting in a small room, Asiwaju, myself, Yemi Cardoso, Wale Edun and some others and the argument got so heated that Asiwaju asked us if we were the ones the people elected.

“He stormed out of the room and we did not leave, we stayed there. After some minutes, he came back into the room and asked us why we were still there. Then we continued the discussion. In the end, we developed that law and it has become part of the success story in Lagos. This showed that Asiwaju is one leader who allows people to develop ideas,” Osinbajo explained.

The Vice President who also presented a discuss on the topic, ‘Linking the Philosophy To Governance and Commitment’, also described Tinubu as a “fighter and a champion of people- oriented courses.

In his welcome address, Governor Ambode said Tinubu’s era as Governor of Lagos from 1999 to 2007 showed the depth of his governance capacity, adding that he has over the years sustained his relevance in the nation’s polity.

“After his gubernatorial years, he has continued to show pivotal leadership, particularly on the national stage.  It is not for nothing that he is acknowledged for his defining role in the emergence of a progressive political party in Nigeria,” the Governor said.

He said there was no better birthday present that his friends and well wishers could give to him as befitting as what the theme of this year’s colloquium epitomized, saying that Tinubu’s legacy was built around his capacity to invest in people.

“The theme of this year’s colloquium is “Investing in People”. Whether it is called human capital development or people-centric investment, the meaning is clear enough and its importance is undeniable.  For us on the political landscape, it may well be the greatest governance challenge.  Creating highly impactful programs and policies for our people is my simple understanding of good governance.  At the end of the day, the level of investment on our people will determine our future sustenance as a Nation always.

“Look around you, there are only a few people that can match his (Tinubu) unquestionable thirst to invest in people.  It goes without any gainsaying that, I join numerous others seated here or outside, that have gained in the investment Asiwaju has made on people.  I am grateful for that,” Governor Ambode said.

He said the colloquium was not just a talk shop, but a veritable platform for the generation of ideas by all stakeholders on the need to invest in people, adding that the ultimate objective and expectation is for the forum to avail policy makers at all levels of government new ideas and perspectives and to enrich the process of policy formulation, design and implementation.

Besides, Governor Ambode thanked President Buhari for the support to the State and gracing the occasion as part of his activities to mark his two-day official visit to Lagos, just as he expressed optimism that the historic visit would be more beneficial to the State on the long run.

In his response, Tinubu thanked President Buhari and the host of dignitaries including several Governors, members of the National Assembly, Ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, among other stakeholders for finding time to grace the occasion, saying that he was highly honoured by their presence.

Tinubu, particularly lauded the strides of Governor Ambode, assuring him that he would continue to support his administration as it continues to drive Lagos was on the right path of economic development.

“You (Governor Ambode) have been exceptionally committed to the progress and economic development of Lagos state and I can only say thank you. The act of many good jobs is more work and after beautiful challenges is more success. Work hard at it; we are in the booth together,” Tinubu said.
