No rift with Tinubu, says Buhari

The presidency last night said a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is not under watch by any security agency.

It dismissed any reports of strained relationship between President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu.

It said it was unaware of any plot against Buhari by Tinubu.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, who made the clarifications in a statement in Abuja, said such insinuations by a newspaper were products of perverted logic.

The government warned Nigerians against falling victims of such mischief.

Shehu said: “The attention of the presidency has been drawn to a false and sensational story by a leading newspaper to the effect that a pillar of the governing party, the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is “under security watch over alleged plot against Buhari.”

“Nigerians are hereby advised to ignore this story because it is false and baseless.

We wish to confirm without any equivocation that the Asiwaju is not of any particular interest to any arm of the security services.

“The relationship between him and the president cannot be better than it is at the moment.

“According to the perverted logic of the newspaper, the respected leader of the APC is into a plot against the leader of the country. The presidency is unaware of any such plots against the President.”

Shehu explained that heads of security agencies in the country confirmed that they were unaware of Tinubu being under surveillance.

Shehu added: “I got on the phone a short while ago with General Babagana Munguno, (rtd), the National Security Adviser and the Director-General of the SSS, Lawal Daura who both dismissed the published reports as acts of pure mischief. They are not aware of the Asiwaju being on any kind of watch.

“It would appear that a competition is on between two or three newspaper establishments on how best to breach the excellent relationship between the pillars of our party and government.

“So far, they have not made a headway and there is no indication that they will succeed in the future.

“It suffices to say that such reports, written without fairness and balance can only take away from whatever is left of the credibility of these newspapers. The general public is hereby advised to ignore them on these reports.”

Tinubu: corruption war ’ll strenghten institutions

National leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday called on Nigerians to put God and the nation first in their daily activities. “What is missing is lack of patriotism, dedication to God and to our people.

He spoke after observing his two rakat prayers for the Eid-il-Kabir celebration at the Dodan Barracks, praying ground, Obalende in Lagos.

He said the ongoing war by President Muhammadu Buhari on corruption will further strengthen the country’s institutions and fast track development.

He said: “It is part of nation’s development. We cannot overlook a lot of things. And we cannot personalise a lot of things as if it was vendetta. We have to endure and be patient as we look for justice, equity and a balanced society.

“If we do not straighten these institutions, how can they work for the development of the nation? If we fail and result to blackmail, how can the nation reverse the decadence that is perceived in our society?

“The government officials are almost no longer believable (by the citizens). When one has a public responsibility, they (citizens) look at it as if the source of wealth to steal and mismanage public funds. And do things that are not included in the democratic norms and values. We have to live by example and by our words. We can be talking about it alone. We have to work it without any iota of blackmail.”

The former governor recalled what he went through and later discharged and acquainted, saying: “It is not what I haven’t personally experienced before.”

“I have been through it. The second week I left office, I was invited by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC). I went there and answer their question. Later, I took them to court and I won. Some years back, after they discovered that my assets declaration had some questions, they charged me to the tribunal. I went and challenged them to show proof. I was later discharged and acquainted because there was no evidence to prove their claim. It is only then I accused the government of being selective.”

Tinubu added: “Yearly, we talk about sacrifices and perseverance of people. If we want people to persevere, from the top to the bottom, we have to demonstrate as leaders that we are very serious about nation building too.

“Our leaders should look compassionately at the suffering masses and create the demand locally and diversify our economy. Go through it at once and have a nation that we will all be proud of. Develop citizenship that will be blind to the tribe or ethnicity but believe in character.

“It is worrisome that when we meet ourselves outside the country, we embrace one another but immediately we arrive into this country, revert to ethnicity, tribal and others. We have to develop a new character and new nation.

“Every day we talk about the potential of this country but where are we, when one look at country like India, they don’t have oil but they were able to build an economy for themselves that is thriving today and creating employment for the youths.

“We want everything free but we have not put emphasis on the training of our youths and retraining of our teachers to put education in forefront of investment that is necessary for this country.

“We still believe that education is the weapon against poverty. And to achieve it, we have to rededicate ourselves and make those sacrifices in order to lift the country out of poverty,” he added.

  • She exemplified the best of the progressive spirit, says Tinubu

She exemplified the best of the progressive spirit, says Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said the late Mrs. Awolowo, “exemplified the best of the progressive spirit and concern for all of humanity.”

In his tributes yesterday night he said, “We mourn her passing but we also must continue to move forward in order to celebrate her life and the ideals for which she stood. I don’t believe she would have wanted us to respond in any other way.

“She was a devout Christian and her life touched man. May her soul rest in peace. Her life spanned nearly a century of change and challenge in the world and in Nigeria. Through it all, she remained true to great and noble ideas and did so with dignity, spirit and compassion.

“Just a few weeks to becoming 100 years of age, she passed on. However, for nearly a century, she remained committed. In her gentle but strong way, she held forth the banner and nurtured the progressive legacy after her husband, the revered Chief Obafemi Awolowo passed on.

“This great jewel of the people withstood the test of time and weathered the political storms of dictatorships and mis governance. Never did she bend or reject her principles and beliefs despite the pressures that came. She stood firmly in the courage of her convictions.

“Our Mama, HID Awolowo was the Awolowo philosophy personified. She remained a constant source of knowledge, inspiration and wisdom. Her faith in the Nigerian nation was unwavering and revealed an uncommon, visionary political bearing.  She gave a mother’s love to all Nigerians irrespective of political differences and through her we learned that unity through diversity is the precious gift we must construct and give ourselves.

“While we mourn, we must also take solace in the fact that she lived long enough to see the advent of progressive government at the federal level.

“She has bequeathed to us a great legacy, a political legacy of intelligence, courage conviction, hope and belief in the goodness of the people.  As such, we will miss her presence and are grieved by her departure. Yet, the story of her life commands us to do our best to turn Nigeria into the nation she dedicated her life to and that we all honor her every day by each one of us becoming better citizens, better Nigerians.”
