Tinubu to PDP governors: Buhari clearing your mess

All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders yesterday rose in defence of President Muhammadu Buhari, saying he is not a dictator as claimed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors.

Buhari is only clearing the rot created by the PDP government, especially under former President Godluck Jonathan, APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande and Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna) said.

Tinubu and Akande were at the Aso Villa, Abuja to confer with the President.

The former Lagos State governor said: “I disagree with that (dictatorial tendency). He (Buhari) was elected on a platform of democracy; he has adhered to the rule of law so far. What is dictatorship about what he has done? He has helped to stimulate the economy in the various states and that is where the people are. So what is dictatorship?

“An institutional paralysis had occurred in the country. It is very important for a steady man like the President to really help the nation recover from the paralysis and that is what he is doing; so I don’t see what is dictatorial about that.”

Tinubu told the PDP: “If they don’t have anything to say, they’d rather be quiet. They created what is wrong here today and we can’t sweep that under the carpet. There must be rule of law.”

On the speculation that he was at the Villa to submit names for ministerial appointments, he said: “What can I do about that? They have the right to speculate; they have the right to their lies and I have the right to debunk.”

Sani in a statement in Abuja, said: “President Buhari is not a dictator but a leader committed to fumigating the political space from the lethargic legacies of the PDP. PDP governors have the constitutional right to play the role of an opposition in our democracy but we must not in anyway forget the menace they represented just yesterday.

[ad id=”403656″] ”PDP governors should apologise to Nigerians for the paralysis, the tragedy and the human misery their party left behind. Under Jonathan, the security apparatus of the state became an armed wing of the ruling party and an instrument of repression and political witchhunting and persecution.”

He added: “The governors lack the moral right to preach the gospel of freedom and democracy; the very people whom before their very eyes security apparatus of the state under Jonathan was systematically and periodically unleashed against governors and states under the then opposition.

He recalled that the PDP governors kept mute when security forces under Jonathan barred Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s and Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole   planes from taking off and landing; when security agencies raided the APC data offices in Lagos and when they laid siege to the Rivers State Government House.

The lawmaker argued that the PDP governors served the Jonathan administration as pillars of tyranny, lacking the liver and the heart to tell Jonathan the truth and cowardly sang his praises in an obsequies procession until they led their leader and their party over the cliff.

“The PDP governors are debris of a cancerous era; they are remains of our dark, despicable and dingy past. Nigeria is on a recuperation process as we march further away from the era of political decadence and pestilence which symbolized the PDP years.

He described the PDP governors statement as “evil echoes from a dark forest” and urged the President to remain focused in his mission to end the inherited culture of malfeasance of the PDP.

The PDP governors decried what they described as Buhari’s dictatorial tendencies.

In a communiqué after a meeting on Monday at the Bayelsa State Governor’s Office in Yenagoa, they condemned the alleged invasion of the Akwa Ibom State Government House by some operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), describing it as against the spirit, ethos, values and fundamental tenets of democratic norms and tradition, more so with the existence of a duly elected  governor .

The governors said: “We insist that the trend must stop henceforth. No democracy survives without a viable opposition in any part of the world and we must also remember to remind the APC that they are the real beneficiaries of the liberal democratic ethos of the PDP.

“We once more advise the DSS to preoccupy itself with the task of ensuring internal security and desist from daily harassing and intimidating members of the opposition.

“We implore the international community, the civil society organisations and human rights activists to caution the All Progressives Party-led Federal Government and to insist that it respects the well-entrenched democratic tradition.

“We all have a duty to prevent what looks to us like a steady slide of this country into dictatorship.”

It was read by Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

Tinubu denied that there was rivalry in the APC, adding that the party is focused on supporting the President to achieve his goal of transforming the nation.

He said: “Don’t listen to rumours; there is no struggle. Our party is not even looking at the direction of power struggle or anything of such.

“The support structure is to encourage and support the President as you have heard from Chief Akande, to help him institutionalise his goal, principle and vision for a new Nigeria.”

On complaints about delay in sending the ministerial list, he said: “There is pitfall in rushing, quick fix, depending upon the depth of the rot. And that rush can cascade into mistakes of unimaginable magnitude. There is equally glory and recovery in slowness, when you have a slow fix of a bad foundation.

“So to me, I would rather take the one that will last the country and endure for a longer period of time than the rush-hour shopping.”

Akande said they were at the Villa to encourage Buhari to change the rot he inherited.

He said: “I understand that President Buhari inherited piles of rot in the Villa and I say let me see him, talk to him and report to my party with a view to knowing how to encourage him to change the rot to good.”

No struggle for BoT chairmanship – Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, on Wednesday debunked report that himself, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, were struggling to emerge the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

He spoke with State House correspondents after visiting President Muhammadu Buhari along with Akande at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to him, no such rivalry exists in the party and that the party is focused on supporting President Buhari achieve his goal of transforming the nation.

He said: “Don’t listen to rumors, there is no struggle. Our party is not even looking at the direction of power struggle or anything of such.

“The support structure is to encourage and support the President as you have heard from Chief Bisi Akande, to help him institutionalize his goal, principle and vision for a new Nigeria.”

On those complaining about delay in the release of the ministerial list, he said: “There is pitfall in rushing, quick fix, depending upon the depth of the rot. And that rush can cascade into mistakes of unimaginable magnitude. There is equally glory and recovery in slowness, when you have a slow fix of a bad foundation.

“So to me, I would rather take the one that will last the country and endure for a longer period of time than the rush hour shopping.”

He also disagreed with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claim that President Buhari was dictatorial.

He said: “I disagree with that. He was elected on a platform of democracy, he has adhered to rule of law so far. What is dictatorship about what he has done? He has helped to stimulate the economy in the various states and that is where the people are. So what is dictatorship?

“And the institutional paralysis had occurred in the country. It is very important for a steady man like the President to really help the nation recover from the paralysis and that is what he is doing. So I don’t see what is dictatorial about that.”

He also asked the PDP to keep silent if it has nothing meaningful to say.

“If they don’t have anything to say, they rather be quiet. They created what is wrong here today and we can’t sweep that under the carpet. There must be rule of law,” he added.

Tinubu: Buhari ’ll give priority to education

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described education as a top priority of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He spoke also of his firm belief in education and its place in the development of man and country.

Tinubu spoke at the weekend during the maiden convocation of Adeleke University, Ede in Osun State.

He was awarded a honourary doctorate degree in Political Science and Diplomacy.

Other awardees are former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Alfa Belgore  – honourary doctor of law of jurisprudence; Africa’s richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who was also installed as the pioneer chancellor of the institution.

Among the dignitaries at the ceremony were Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola and former APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande.

Governing Council Chairman  Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, praised Tinubu for his vision and political mission, saying: “If not for you sir, we all could imagine what would have become of this nation.”

He expressed gratitude to Tinubu for championing good causes and for Belgore’s and Dangote’s contributions to national development.

The former chief justice advised Tinubu to continue to do more for the nation.

Tinubu said: “I am a firm believer in the principle that education is the single most important ingredient in our ability to develop this nation and then to sustain that development over the generations.

“My love for education is boundless because it is our most effective weapon against poverty and until we educate the mass of our people, Nigeria will remain at the mercy of poverty…

“The Buhari administration holds education as a top priority. It will invest in the education of our youth from primary to the university level.”

According to him, there can be no shortcuts or compromise in education. The nation’s effort at development will forever be crippled unless educational institutions that can train youths to be creative are established, Tinubu said.

Noting that 1.8 million graduates are produced yearly with little hope of finding employment, the former governor of Lagos State decried the lack of adequate skills in graduates to address Nigeria’s developmental challenges.

He said: “Too many of our youth are today unemployable. Yet this is no fault of theirs but that of the educational system in which they put their trust.

“It is time for many institutions to re-cast their academic curricula that they may design courses and programmes in order to equip our youth with skills applicable to our needs.”

Tinubu praised the  government’s initiative of providing meal for school pupils, noting that it would attract more kids to schools, thereby depriving unscrupulous elements from engaging them negatively.

On the honour bestowed on him and other eminent persons, Tinubu said it was a measure of their collective efforts to establish a just and functional political order, as well as a society in which every citizen enjoys access to basic needs.

Tinubu, who was decorated by the Vice Chancellor as the pioneer recipient of the institution’s honorary award, expressed his profound gratitude to the Adeleke family for counting him worthy for the honorary award.

His words: “It is sincerely a great honour for me to be the first and pioneer honorary award recipient at this maiden convocation ceremony of Adeleke University alongside the first alumni graduates of this great institution.

“Adeleke dynasty has shown more interest in education and this has contributed tremendously to educational sector in Nigeria and entire world as thousands of helpless minds have been educated through different academic scholarships sponsored by the family.

“ Adeleke family has reduced the rate of ignorance, poverty and destitution through its various academic programmes and life ameliorating gestures which have complemented the policies of the state government most especially on education sector.”

Tinubu advised the graduating students to consider themselves privileged and use the education they had acquired in promoting the well-being of mankind.

Tinubu implored them to demonstrate high sense of patriotism, honesty and fairness in their future career as parts of the values they had received from the university.

Adefuye was a true Patriot – Tinubu

Former Governor of Lagos state and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described as shocking the news of the sudden death of Nigeria’s Ambassador to the USA, professor Adefuye.

Tinubu, in a statement by his media office Friday, said Adefuye’s death was a monumental loss and a most painful death.

“He spoke with me about two weeks ago. He was full of suggestions on how to make Nigeria a great country and his plan to be part of that initiative. He worked closely with us in planning the successful trip of President Buhari to the United States,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu described Professor Adefuye as a true patriot, a man full of life and ideas.

“Sadly, he departed ahead of his time. His contributions will remain intact and many that encountered him will forever remain grateful they met and knew such an accomplished gentleman. May his soul rest in peace and may God comfort his family, relatives and friends.”

The APC chieftain promised to deliver the party’s message faithfully and sincerely and to toe the party line.

Attributing their defection to leadership greed and selfishness, they urged other Lagosians in PDP to quit the party.

Tinubu leader of all times, says APC chieftain

A chieftain of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC), Basorun Tajudeen Jaiyesimi, has described the party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as “a leader of all times”.

Jaiyesimi, who spoke following the conferment of “Baba Oba of Ikorodu” title on Tinubu, reasoned that the APC national leader’s “leadership qualities cannot be overemphasized”.

He noted that Tinubu persistently demonstrated  sterling qualities since his days as treasurer of Mobil Plc.

He added that it was Tinubu’s ingenuity that led to the construction of the ultra-modern office of the oil company at Victoria Island, Lagos.

“That Lagos is what it is today cannot be divorced from Asiwaju’s vision of a well-developed and prosperous Lagos.

“He was able to do this, using his vast experience in the corporate world to turn the state into a dream come true.

“Lagosians will recall the ingenuity he brought into the system, which led to a quantum leap in the resources of Lagos.

“This is aside the setting up of political structure that has made the state to continue to work.

“To cap it all, he used his vision and resources to spread development, starting from the Southwest to other zones under the control of the APC.

“That APC won the presidential election surely is the icing on the cake for the Jagaban,” he said.

Jaiyesimi, who is the Basorun of Ipakodo, Ikorodu,, hailed the Ayangbure, Oba Kabiru Adewale Shotobi, for conferring the title on Tinubu.

This, he added, showed that the traditional ruler was on the same page with his people.

“I’m not surprised that Kabiyesi honoured Asiwaju with the great title of Baba Oba because Kabiyesi stands for the growth and development of Ikorodu.

“It only confirms that our Kabiyesi, just like the people, recognise the contributions of Asiwaju to the development of Ikorodu,” he added.

Shettima said: “There are three tendencies in the Southwest political arena.

‘’The first are the Awoists. The second is Obasanjo/Afenifere, with a reluctance to embrace the North.

•Three books on ex-governor launched in Lagos

Former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said he is proud of his successor and former Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola (SAN).

Tinubu spoke yesterday at the public presentation of three books – The Great Leap; In Bold Print, and The Lagos Blow Down– compiled in honour of Fashola by one of his aides, Hakeem Bello. It was all at the Muson Centre, Onikan.

The three books, which are compilations of about a thousand speeches and thoughts of Fashola in his eight years as governor, were reviewed by Prof. Olatunji Dare (The Great Leap and In Bold Print); Dr. Wumi Raji (The Great Leap) and Moses Ogunlewe (The Lagos Blow Down).

Represented by a Lagos APC chieftain, Prof. Tunde Samuel, Tinubu said Fashola added value to Lagos by combining rugged intellectualism and hard work.

“Tinubu is happy that Fashola has taken a step further to reflect on his performance audit. The reviewers have recognised Fashola’s ability to combine intellectualism with a determination to succeed.”

The chairman of the event, Fola Adeola, expressed joy that Fashola was a governor in his lifetime. He said Fashola, in his dictionary, means “everything is correct”.

According to him, Fashola took the right decisions in the eight years he was governor and did his job very well.

One-time Lagos State Finance Commissioner, Mr. Olawale Edun said Fashola did well for the state and posterity will be kind to him.

He noted that students of history, politics and governance have a lot to learn from the former governor, especially in infrastructure, social services and economy.

Lagos APC’s spokesman Joe Igbokwe said Fashola was at the front burner of the successes recorded by the party.

“I worked with him for eight years and so I know him very well. I know the state of Lagos he met and I know the state of Lagos he left; he added value to Lagos,” Igbokwe said.

Prof. Olatunji Dare, represented by broadcaster Mrs. Angela Ajetumobi, said the review was his first post-retirement assignment. He described Fashola as an exceptional achiever, adding that he took in his stride, every attempt by the Federal Government to cripple his administration without losing his focus, temper and tempo.

Dare maintained that Fashola succeeded because of his conviction that he who seeks public office must prepare for it.

Fashola, recounting events that led to the controlled demolition of the Bank of Industry (BoI) building, said the last ten seconds of the demolition were the longest in his life. He added that it was a very challenging moment.

He noted that the event was in honour of Bello, who he described as a gentleman and consummate professional, whose passion for work epitomises his fidelity for any cause he believes in.

Fashola acknowledged that no casualties were recorded when the building partially caved in 2006 because Tinubu, as Governor, declared holiday for the people to participate in the census.
