    Tinubu becomes Agbekoya’s life patron

Former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has been appointed the life patron of Agbekoya Farmers Society.

Tinubu’s investiture has been slated for Friday at the Olumo Rock Tourist Complex Multipurpose Hall, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The APC leader will  be the third life patron of the organisation since it was  founded in1938.

In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Chief Olatunji Bandele,   Tinubu will be stepping into the shoes of the late Olubadan of Ibadan,  Oba Abas Aleshinloye,  who became the first  life patron in 1957 and the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the second life patron.

The  statement reads: “The Yoruba great son and leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is  now stepping into the shoes of our former life patron and the Premier of the defunct Western Region, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was the second Life Patron, and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now the third Life           Patron of Agbekoya since the Society was founded in 1938.”

    Group extols Tinubu’s qualities

Members of Akinwunmi Ambode/Bayo Oshinowo Independent Campaign Group have extolled the leadership qualities of former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which they said, contributed to the electoral victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the general elections.

The membership of the group cut across Olubori, Odun-Ifa, Idi-Araba and Mosafejo Community Development Associations (CDAs) and the Progressive Widows Association  in Oworonsoki Community, Kosofe Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Chairman of the group Mr Olusegun Akinwunmi described Tinubu as a courageous, selfless and dedicated party leader, who worked tirelessly for the victory of the party during the elections.

Akinwunmi who spoke with reporters in Lagos, expressed gratitude to God that the efforts of the party leader came to fruition. He congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, Hon Rotimi Agunsoye and Hon. Bayo Osinowo among others for emerging victorious at the polls.

He called on Governor Ambode to site development projects in Oworonsoki, which according to him, is lacking good roads and functional drainage system, modern classrooms in   primary and secondary school, and potable water.

Akinwunmi disclosed that there is only one primary and secondary school in Oworonsoki, which he said, was responsible for the congestion in the classrooms. According to him, there are over 100 pupils in a classroom. The solution, he said, is to establish more primary and secondary schools in the area given its population.

The members of the group present at the coference were Mr Olusegun Bakare (General Secretary), Mrs Bola Adebisi (Public Relations Officer),  Mrs O. O. Lawal (Asst. Secretary), Mr Tunde Ajayi (Co-ordinator), Chief Tejumaiye Balogun, Mr E.A. Akinpelu (Whip) and Mr Bode Oladiye, Board of Trustees.

  • A New Nigeria begins today, says Tinubu

A New Nigeria begins today, says Tinubu

Text of All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s goodwill message to Nigerians on Democracy Day.

TODAY shall be recorded in our history as the moment when democrats have finally been allowed to participate in Democracy Day. The reason for this is the millions of average Nigerians, who voted to make the day a reality. Should any of you wish to see a true hero of democracy, don’t fret. Just look into the nearest mirror.

The celebrations, prior to this, were false showings; they were the commemoration of wrong. The path we have taken to come to this august moment has not been one of easy victory or swift progress.

Instead, it has been a path hewed by the triumph of resilience over broken promises and fraudulent avowals of representative governance. Reaching this fine moment has been a story told in the cadence of the victory of the common good over arrogant power.

The voice of the solitary poor man, no one hears. But the votes of the poor became a potent army, capable of toppling the very citadel of high privilege in order to bring forth national awakening, no less historic and important than the very birth of this nation.

Today, we shall witness the inauguration of Muhammadu Buhari, a great, honourable and dedicated public servant as our President. This is indeed an inspiring moment, a turning-point in our national direction and the reclamation of our best destiny.

We shall celebrate this achievement but not in mindless, care-free fashion. The road ahead is still choked with the debris of problems left too long unattended.

We are well aware of the challenges pitted against our wellbeing. Insecurity, economic decline and corruption, we must fight and fight as if we are going to war not a carnival.

Most of all, we must fight the temptation of hopelessness, the sense that little good will come out of even the greatest efforts.

This is where I want to thank and commend all those who voted in the past elections.

It is you who turned today into a celebration of true democracy which it was intended to be.

With no guarantee, save your faith, and armed solely with the hope and promise of a better tomorrow through better governance, you fought the mounting tide of power and money. That tide tried to induce you to sell your democratic rights and your chance for a greater future on the cheap.

In the eyes of those who were self-exalted, you had been debased and brought low by visible circumstance of poverty and lack.  You seemed to them ripe for purchase. Yet, inside, you retained the greatness of character and a loyalty to the democratic ideal incomprehensible to those who believed that everything can be bought.

You showed them that your self-definition as human beings and as Nigerians was not for sale or tender. As a result, he who had been given so much, so easily by so many was humbled. You, who have been ridiculed, reduced and written off, were lifted up. The will of the people hath reclaimed its sovereignty.

This has been a blossoming of justice and the illumination of the power of human decency.  So often, Nigeria has been portrayed negatively before the world. Not this time.

The world is proud of what you have done and how you have advanced the cause of fairness and right. What you have done has lent solace to those still struggling to establish democracy and responsive governance in their homelands. They now see Nigeria as an inspiring example. They seek to be like you, to travel the road you just trod.

Today, Nigeria is no longer in chains as we move into a new era and take hold of our selves. From President Buhari to the state governors inaugurated today, I wish them well and pray they govern in an open, democratic way that assures your optimal wellbeing.

I ask that you, the people, maintain your diligence and help guide those you have just elected.

The issues that confront us are deep and complex. They are not susceptible to facile solution or inattention.  Wise and sound policy is within our capacity. But, we must have the will to accomplish it. If both the governed and the government work in league, there is nothing our beloved nation cannot overcome.

Let it be said that on this day, the nation consecrate itself to the ideal that governance is the sacred instrument of the people and never again shall it be the exclusive recreation of a select few. No longer shall democracy day be a shallow ritual. Henceforth, it is a living truth.

  • Tinubu, the kingmaker

    Tinubu, the kingmaker

AS Muhammadu Buhari receives the baton from President Goodluck Jonathan today, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will receive the adulation of a kingmaker.

Indeed, Tinubu will go down in history as the merger initiator, executor and consolidator.

Many commentators have described the former governor of Lagos State as a courageous and fearless political General, strategic thinker, risk taker, a crusader for change, and a great apostle of power, which, in his view, is never served a la carte. Always exuding charisma, the swearing in ceremony will be the crowing of Tinubu’s efforts as an indomitable opposition leader and the most colourful politician in the post-Awolowo era.

Thirty two years ago, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, predicted that progressive forces would  float a formidable opposition platform that would win federal power. Tinubu fulfilled the prediction. He argued that, if the leaders of like-minded parties could make sacrifice and float a mega party to confront the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Nigerians would celebrate power shift. He rejected the option of alliance or inexplicable coalition, saying that only the option of merger was viable.

Tinubu came up with the theory of the cow and the slaughter’s slab. It will be difficult for the cow to be dragged to the slab. But, once the cow gets there, it is a journey of no return. In Tinubu’s view, only a merger can lead to the natural death of the legacy parties. Once the scattered progressive platforms are collapsed into the APC, their leaders will not look back. They will either survive or sink with the mega party. On March 28, they survived as Buhari defeated Dr. Jonathan at the presidential election.

The road was laced with thrones. But, the leaders weathered the storm. Tinubu provided the inspiration. He sustained the tempo of political motivation till the end. He is acknowledged as a top party financier.

Tinubu’s role in the polity is consistent with his antecedent. Since he crossed the bridge from the boardroom to politics, he has not looked back. “He is the contemporary Awo of our time, who is destined to complete Awo’s unfinished business,” said a party elder from Lagos, Olorunfunmi Bashorun.  “History will not forget his contributions,” he added.

House of Representatives member-elect Olajide Jimoh, who described Tinubu as the Tutor-General of the Nigerian politics, said the party leader is endowed with mega capabilities. “He started the journey of liberation in 2007 from the Southwest. Today, the progressives are in power at the centre,” he added.

When the political earthquake swept across the Southwest in 2003, only Tinubu survived. PDP sharp shooters and hawks, penetrated the Alliance for Democracy (AD), at the instance of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Ahead of 2007 polls, AD was in ruins. But, Tinubu, a man of foresight, saw it coming. He spearheaded the formation of the Action Congress (AC), which later metamorphosed into the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Under the guidance of the quintessential soldier of democracy, the party reclaimed Ekiti and Osun States from the PDP in 2010. A year later, PDP was also sacked from power in Ogun and Oyo States. But, last year, PDP regained the control of Ekiti.

Tinubu grew up in a political family. His mother, the late Alhaja Abibat Mogaji, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, was a popular politician and women mobiliser in the days of the Action Group (AG), the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and Social Democratic Party (SDP). But, little did he guess that he would also become a political colossus.

Tinubu  attended St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos and Children’s Home School in Ibadan. Tinubu went to the United States in 1975, where he studied at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago, Illinois and later at Chicago State University. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. Tinubu worked for American companies-Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation. After returning to Nigeria in 1983, he worked with Mobil Oil Nigeria.

When the auditor became a politician by accident, he took the polity by storm. It was in the aborted Third Republic. As a senator on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), he became a thorn in the flesh of the military.

The Lagos West Social Democratic Party (SDP) senatorial form was obtained for Tinubu by his cousin, Alhaji Kola Oseni, a grassroots politician. At the screening, the green horn dazed the screening committee headed by Chief Lanre Rasak when he scored the highest mark. He answered highly technical questions with immensurable wit from the panel. Old politicians on the panel, who had written off the new breed, had a re-think.

Lagos West District is the largest senatorial district in the country. During the historic contest, Tinubu defeated the National Republican Convention (NRC) candidate, Mrs. Kemi Nelson, with a wide margin. In 1999, Mrs. Nelson served as a commissioner in Tinubu’s Administration. Tinubu also scored the highest number of senatorial votes in the country. He was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance. He was widely acknowledged as a high flyer, prolific analyst and tactician. With the fall of the Third Republic, his career in the Upper Chamber was aborted.

Tinubu was the arrowhead of senators seeking an end to the military rule. The brave politician had objected to the annulment of the free and fair June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the SDP candidate, the late Basorun Moshood Abiola.  He was a pillar of support for the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). His dedication, courage and financial backing for the noble cause sustained the crusade.

During the June 12 crisis, Tinubu was marked liquidation. He escaped abroad. From there, he fired salvos at the military. He inspired many pro-democracy groups, whose activities led to the restoration of civil rule in 1999.

Tinubu made history as the governor of the Centre of Excellence for eight years. He was a model governor. He jerked up the internally generated revenue from the N600 million monthly to billions of naira. Tinubu fought the infrastructural battle. He constructed roads, built hospitals and schools, created opportunities for employment and re-energised the transport sector. He initiated the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. The judiciary reforms he introduced were legendary.

The former governor also created additional 37 local councils, based on popular demand. When the allocations to the councils were seized by the Federal Government, he invented a creative financial engineering that made the councils to survive.

When Tinubu’s tenure was about to expire in 2007, he groomed a competent successor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), who also won re-election in 2011.

In politics and private life, Tinubu is reputed for philanthropy. He is a cheerful giver, benefactor, godfather and defender of the oppressed. Tinubu is a national property and detribalised apostle of national unity. He is an apostle of true federalism and Sovereign National Conference. Yet, he objected to the National Conference set up by the Jonathan Administration last year, describing it as a decoy and a Greek gift. The conference ended up as a jamboree.

Tinubu is an advocate of electoral reform. He hailed the work of the Justice Muhammadu Uwais Panel on Electoral Reforms. But, in his view, electoral reform is an unfinished business.

Tinubu’s political career has been turbulent. Three years ago, he was dragged before  the Code of Conduct tribunal for allegedly operating illegal foreign accounts. He triumphed over his detractors. Also, agents of the Federal Government  monitor his activities as an opposition leader. Whenever he was abroad, stories would be cooked about him.

Rewards for politics and community service have come for Tinubu in torrents. He has received many honorary chieftaincy titles. They include the Asiwaju of Lagos, conferred on him by the late Oba Adeyinka Oyekan, the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom and the Aare of Ile-Oluji.

  • Court adjourns Tinubu’s N150b libel suit against AIT till June 30

Court adjourns Tinubu’s N150b libel suit against AIT till June 30

A Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja has adjourned the N150 billion libel suit filed by former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu against Daar Communications owners of African Independent Communication (AIT) till June 30.

The trial judge, Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe, adjourned the suit to enable Tinubu’s counsel respond to the counter-claim filed by AIT.

Tinubu, who is the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, had instituted the N150 billion suit against AIT for allegedly peddling false accusations against his person in the documentary titled: “Lion of Bourdillon”.

According to him, the documentary was politically sponsored to tarnish his reputation in the eyes of the populace.

Justice Akinkugbe had on April 1 granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the AIT from further airing the documentary, pending the determination of the libel suit.

Counsel to AIT Jeffery Kadiri informed the court that the defendant had filed a counter-claim, which had been served on the claimant.

In his response, Tinubu’s counsel Ayodele Adesanmi said the process was served on the claimant only two days ago, adding that he needed time to respond.

Adesanmi, therefore, asked the court for an adjournment to enable him respond to the defendant’s counter-claim.

The trial judge Justice Akinkugbe granted his request and fixed a new date for hearing of the matter.

In its counter-claim filed before the court on Tuesday,  AIT had listed its Chairman, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, and seven others as witnesses to testify against Tinubu.

Others listed to testify are Namure Edoimioya, Medan Tenke, Ajibola Adewusi, Olumide Idowu, Stanley Odidi, Nwabueze and Stanley Bassey.

The station had also denied every averment contained in the claimant’s amended statement of claim.

It stated for that the former governor of Lagos State founded his entire claims on a nonexistent ground or cause of action.

It stated, for instance, that contrary to the claims of the claimant, the documentary aired by its media outfit was not titled “The Lion of Bourdillon”, but “Unmasking the Real Tinubu”.

The Daar Communication Chairman averred that the documentary, in his honest opinion, was not false and was not aired out of malice to the person of the claimant.

Dokpesi said AIT, as a member of the fourth estate of the realm, was empowered by Section 22 of the Constitution to at all times, hold those in government accountable and responsible to the people of Nigeria.

He further averred that the contents of the documentary were facts, which had been in the public domain for over two decades.

  • ‘Tinubu’s undisputed Yoruba leader’

    ‘Tinubu’s undisputed Yoruba leader’

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart in Ogun State Chief Babatunde Fadun has explained why the party crashed out in the general elections, his defection to All Progressives Congress (APC) and the re-election of Governor Ibikunle Amosun. The former Ogun West senatorial candidate described the political tie between the North and the West as an enduring solution to political instability in the country. He spoke with Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN.

What was responsible for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s loss in the general elections?

There were so many reasons for the party’s defeat. PDP failed because of its culture of impunity, use and dump; lack of internal democracy and disrespect for fairness, equity and justice. At a stage the party was commercialised under the former Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur. Under him justice went to the highest bidder. Many members were frustrated and punished unjustly.

Will you attribute the defeat to the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan?

Yes poor performance of President Jonathan contributed largely to the defeat. There is no substantial achievement that he can point at except the resuscitation of the old generation railway. I can lay my hands on anything he has done other than the entrenchment of impunity and favouritism in the system. His inability to take prompt decisions when necessary contributed to his failure. He runs administration of committees. He set up so many committees which show his weakness and lack of direction.

Why are you leaving PDP for All Progressives Congress (APC)?

Many aggrieved highly placed members have left the PDP. Remember, it started with seven governors usually referred to as G7 who pulled out because of what they called lack of internal democracy within the party. Although two of them, Governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and his brother from Jigawa, Sule Lamido went back to PDP for selfish interest, the remaining five Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto) Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers) and AbdulFattah Ahmed (Kwara) stood their ground and called it a quit with PDP. These governors contributed immensely to the victory of APC. Generally, Nigerians were tired of poor leadership and arrogance of the PDP leaders, hence the party was voted out.

When are you making formal declaration for APC?

I will do that very soon. It’s not me alone. My supporters and I have resolved to move en-mass to APC, the party of the moment, the party that Nigerians are celebrating, the party that will bring a lot of hope for Nigerians.

Why did you prefer APC among other parties?

The leadership qualities of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu make APC to be attractive. He was the brain behind the merger of major opposition parties that transformed into APC.  He has performed a miracle; a new party put together within one year defeated the ruling party. It has never happened in this country for an opposition party to unseat the ruling party. Tinubu should take credit for that feat. Tinubu is a political giant of our time. He is a national leader. No Yoruba man can rival him. The Afenifere leaders should face the reality, they should accept him as our leader. The Yorubas should not ask who their leader is. Tinubu is the undisputed leader. He delivered five out of six states in Yorubaland to the APC during the presidential election. What else can be used to determine the leadership of Yoruba race?

The political tie between the North and the Southwest is an antidote to political instability. With this realignment, there will be stability and the country will achieve tremendous progress.

Do you think Ogun West stands a better chance of producing governor in 2019?

We are hopeful that the next governor would emerge from Ogun West Senatorial District in 2019. Governor Amosun has expressed at different forum that he will support an indigene of Ogun West to succeed him in office. We sincerely pray that the governor will help us in this age-long struggle.  We are optimistic that whoever the governor support in 2019 will win. Our hope lies on Governor Amosun and we are optimistic that he will reciprocate the total support we gave him in his re-election bid.

Since the creation of Ogun State in 1976, Ogun West has never produced governor. In 2011, both the PDP and Progressives Party of Nigeria (PPN) led by former Governor Gbenga Daniel picked their governorship candidates from Ogun West. This year again, PDP fielded an Ogun West indigene for governorship, so also the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

How would you assess the performance of Amosun?

He has transformed Ogun state within four years. He turned Ogun into a giant construction site. There is no part of the state that has not benefitted from his massive road construction. He has also done well in the field of education with the construction of model classrooms across the state and provision of health facilities.

The landslide victory he recorded in the governorship election is a testimony of his service delivery. The wide margin showed that he was a man of the people. He won the election convincingly despite the crisis within APC that led a faction to pull out. I think this will encourage him to do more in his second term.

Are you worried with the development in Ekiti State?

It is unfortunate that Governor Ayo Fayose has turned Ekiti State known to be one of the most peaceful states in the country, to a theatre of violence. I thought he would be wiser now given his first experience in office as governor, but he is not. His passion for hate campaign is a case in point. He bank rolled the hate campaign against the president-elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to curry favour from President Jonathan so that he can be protected when he runs into trouble. He is a political rabble-rouser, he thrives on political violence.

I understand he fell out with Asiwaju Tinubu in 2011 over senatorial ticket. He ran to Labour Party and lost the election. He went back to PDP and won the governorship primaries and the governorship election. Today PDP has been relegated from national to regional party with its stronghold in Southeast and Southsouth. When the chips are down both Fayose and Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State would soon realise that their political relevance have diminished. Fayose may have to seek refuge in APC. I will not be surprised if Fayose runs back to Tinubu whom I believe will accept him as a prodigal son.

What is your advice to the in-coming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari?

Gen Buhari is a highly experienced statesman with high integrity. I will advise him to work closely with his party leaders and implement the party programmes. He should not allow people whose motive is to enrich themselves in his government. He should not hesitate to apply sanctions against those found wanting no matter their status. That will assist in his fighting corruption.

  • Tinubu: Architect of modern democracy

    Tinubu: Architect of modern democracy

In present day modern society, an enroute to greater political emancipation is always tough and tough. Most especially, in the African political context.

So, such victory must have been proved beyond any reasonable doubts likewise the All Progressive Congress that unseat the incumbent administration of the Peoples Democratic Party led-Federal Government of Nigeria convincingly.

According to the pillar of opposition party in Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he posited that “The battling opposition parties were too weak to dislodge the PDP from power unless they come together to form a formidable opposition party in the country”. Hence, Asiwaju and other progressive initiated the merger of the first opposition party in the Nigeria history to put an end to President Goodluck Jonathan’s weak governance and reposition the country for rapid socio-economic advancement.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been known for his propensity in the annals of our political development. In his early political career, he was elected into the senate, Federal Republic of Nigeria to represent Lagos West Senatorial District, and he gained good recognition when he distinguished himself as the chairman, senate committee on banking, finances, appropriation and currency.

After the June 12th 1993 presidential election was annulled by the then military junta Asiwaju became an active financial and founding member of the pro-democracy National Coalition NADECO that agitated for the restoration of democratic governance and true federalism.

He was elected as the Executive Governor of Lagos State in 1998 alongside other Alliance for Democracy (AD) Progressive Governor in the south western Nigeria.

In 2003 when the PDP took over the south west except Lagos State, Asiwaju remain the last man standing and the only opposition voice in the geo-political zone to liberate the poor masses from the grip of PDP.

In 2007, his party Action Congress AC was able to retained the Governorship seat for his successor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the government of Asiwaju bequeathed a blue print christened “The New Lagos Plan” to the Fashola Administration in which the master-plan was programmed to address the alleviation of poverty, unemployment, Independent Power Projects (island and Mainland); The Lagos Railway Project and Ferry Services;  Millennium School Projects with equipped Laboratories and state –of-the-art libraries; improved waste disposal system in tune with the world standard; including the rebuilding Lagos into a modern metropolis as seen in the upgrading of our major roads.

In 2011, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed has succeeded in making the progressive board a rallying-point across the country through his track records, perseverance and dogged determination. Hence, All Progressive Congress win more states one after the other.

In fact, the achievement made by Asiwaju’s administration not only offered a new lease of administrative life to the government of Mr. Fashola, but it also set a standard blue print that is good for a soft-landing in the commercial capital of Nigeria and the epic center of Yoruba solidarity and economic power.

Court adjourns Tinubu’s N150b suit against AIT

A Lagos High Court, Ikeja, on Wednesday adjourned till June 30 the N150 billion libel suit filed by former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, against Daar communications, owners of African Independent Communication.

The trial judge, Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe, adjourned the suit to enable Tinubu’s counsel respond to the counter-claim filed by AIT.

Tinubu, who is also the National Leader of All Progressives Congress, had instituted the N150 billion suit against AIT for allegedly peddling false accusations against his person in the documentary titled: “Lion of Bourdilion.”

The ex-governor said the documentary was politically sponsored to tarnish his reputation in the eyes of the populace.

  • Dokpesi, seven others to testify in Tinubu’s N150b suit against AIT

Dokpesi, seven others to testify in Tinubu’s N150b suit against AIT

THE Chairman of DAAR Communication Plc, High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, and seven others have been listed as witnesses to testify in a N150 billion libel suit filed by All Progressives Congress (APC’s) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu against the African Independent Television (AIT).

The former Lagos State governor had instituted a N150 billion suit against the DAAR Communications Plc, owners of AIT, before an Ikeja High Court over alleged false accusations in a documentary titled: “Lion of Bourdillon”.

The matter is before Justice Iyabo Akinkugbe of Ikeja High Court.

Others listed as witnesses are Namure Joy Edoimioya, Chief Medan Tenke, Ajibola Adewusi, Olumide Idowu, Chief Stanley Odidi, Engr. Nwabueze and Dr. Stanley Bassey.

Tinubu is claiming that the documentary was politically sponsored to tarnish his reputation in the eyes of the populace.

Justice Akinkugbe had on April 1, 2015 granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the AIT from further airing the documentary, pending the determination of the libel suit.

But, in a statement of defence and counter-claim filed by AIT before the court yesterday, the defendant denied each and every claim of the applicant in the amended statement of claim.

AIT claimed that the claimant/applicant founded his entire claims on a non-existent ground or cause of action because contrary to his (Tinubu) claim, the documentary aired by its media outfit is not titled: “The Lion of Bourdillon”, but “Unmasking the Real Tinubu”.

AIT, in its statement of defence, also averred that the documentary, in its honest opinion, was not false and neither was it aired out of malice against the person of the claimant.

It averred further that as the fourth estate of the realm, it was empowered by Section 22 of the Constitution to at all times, hold those in government accountable and responsible to the people of Nigeria.

“The defendant avers that further to paragraphs 4 and 5 above, that it is empowered by Section 22 of the Constitution as the fourth estate of the realm, to at all times, hold those in government accountable and responsible to the people of Nigeria, and to be free to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in Chapter 2 of the Constitution and uphold the responsibility and accountability of the government to the people to ensure that the economic system is not operated in such a manner as to permit the concentration of wealth or the means of production and exchange in the hands of few individuals or of a group, and that there is equal opportunity for every Nigerian to secure adequate means of livelihood and empowerment without discrimination.

“The defendant avers that the claimant is a former public office holder, whose activities before, during and after leaving office are always in the public domain for proper scrutiny, in accordance with the intendment of the framers of the Nigerian Constitution.

“The defendant also avers that being in the business of information dissemination, it is aware that the contents of the said documentary are not news to many Nigerians, a fact very well known to the claimant, who took no steps to correct the information embedded in the print media and the social media platforms for years. For example, the pseudonym, “Lion of Bourdillon”, by which the claimant has come to be known, addressed and associated with, over the years, was not given to him, or coined by the defendant”, it averred.

According to AIT, the said documentary, which it did not authored, was only aired for a given short period of time and was last aired on March 6, 2015, when it got wind that the defendant had filed a libel suit.

Attached to the statement of defence and counter-claim was a list of documents which it said would be relied upon and which comprises links to online publications.

Dokpesi, in his statement on oath, also claimed that the defendant merely exercised its constitutional, statutory and social responsibility to inform, educate, entertain and provide a platform for national discourse, to all shades of opinion and political persuasion.

Merit will determine Assembly leaders, says Tinubu

Zoning will not be used to compromise the quality of leadership for the National Assembly, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu said yesterday.

Speaking with reporters at the Defence House, Abuja, Tinubu said the party had decided to allow all those interested in the leadership of the National Assembly to contest. He dismissed insinuations about his interest in who leads the Legislature.

He said: “You have heard from the party, you have heard from the leadership …  I’m a disciplined party man and we will look at it critically.

“However, the nation is expecting us to take a decisive leadership decision and make one meritoriously. Merit will not be compromised. You have to be competent, you have to possess, the kind of character, attributes of the leader. You have to be pan-Nigerian and be a very solid character to lead the National Assembly and that is what we are talking about. It’s not zoning to compromise quality of leadership and competence of an individual.

“I believe we have a very determined party leadership and we have resolved to follow our leadership and the criteria set by that leadership, including myself; we would not use zoning to determine and compromise the credibility, the qualification of an individual.

“It must be all – encompassing and that is the question, if you take zoning as discriminatory in some instances, you might compromise the quality of an individual.

“Let everybody aspire, just like we aspired; your cynicism, no matter what. You predicted during our presidential primaries that we were going to run into chaotic storm; we put those people to shame and we came out with the best. Expect the best from us always,” the former Lagos State governor said.

On the economy, Tinubu said: “The economic situation is a challenge, but as a party, we campaigned on issues and we have listened carefully to some detailed research and the economic indices are not what is expected. Slow growth, huge indebtedness, huge deficit and so many factors while the social issues are still there to be addressed. That is a challenge to leadership.

“The party campaigned on issues and we are going to tackle issues very aggressively.

“One thing that must be clear is that change has occurred. Then, the positive change based upon the expectation of Nigerians will follow.

“What ever the cynicism now, the government is yet to take over, but preparing to take over and ready to face the challenges to create that positive change. That is the expectation of Nigerians.

“It is clear that nobody has given you an indication of shying away from it. There would be a very serious dialogue, there would be a serious exposition and debate, a robust one for that matter for Nigerian public to be involved and what this government is up to for the future of this country.”
