  • Pupils get success tips

Pupils have been urged to set their goals early in life.

The Director, Youth Rescue and Care Initiative (YORCI), Mrs Bisilola Asenuga, gave the advice at a seminar held at the Opebi Grammar School, Opebi, Lagos.

Mrs Asenuga, who spoke on: New Term; Better me, raised the consciousness of the pupils towards accomplishing their goals.

“Set goal according to your capabilities, it must be something you can measure, realistic, visible and time-based,” she said.

She encouraged the pupils to be confident, determined, courageous and make plans for their life’s destination.

She urged them to have a ‘guardian angel,’ who will help, guard and inspire them whenever their strength is waning.

The YORCI director also implored them to learn to be honourable people even at their level.

“Do not relent even in the face of difficulties. Even if you lose, it does not make you a failure; all you need is to rise up again. It is better to fail by honour than win by fraud,” she added.

Another resource person, Ebenezer Akinbolade, urged the pupils to have a specific goal, and hold on to it.

Akinbolade also advised them to invest their skills and knowledge in their fatherland rather than yearning for greener pastures outside the country.

Director, Attwool Schools, Mr Taiwo Adetunji, charged participants to consider every impossibility as a possibility.

”The goals you have set for yourself today are possible; you can achieve it if only you can imagine it and write it down,” he said.

A JSS 2 participant, Tunde Adeyemi, said he would begin acting on what he learnt from the seminar to be a better person.

“I want to do better than last term, I am being motivated by this programme and I want it to continue in my school.

  • Tips on buying fans

Fans are simple interior appliances used to create a cooling effect in the summer. In Nigeria, fans are used more during the dry season or when the weather is hot.

Are you the type who has been worried over the choice of fan? You need not worry again.

Fans are of three types. There are some meant for the ceiling, and there are the standing ones. The third is the wall fan.

Brands like O.R.L has various products with different prices. Its Giant 60 costs N4000; Deluxe, N3,500; Max, around N3000; Executive and Zurge go for N3,500; Mega, N4,800; Golden, N3,800. They come in white and brown colours.

STC also has different products. Its Super goes for N3000; Super Power, N2, 800; and President (N3, 800). SMC has model KL which costs N5, 800; and model KN which stands at N8000. This pair happens to be the oldest. They are from Asia.

Usher ceiling fan has white and brown colours. The former goes for N6, 800; and the latter, N7000. The Binatone brand has brown, white, cream, and chocolate colours. Each has three or four blades depending on the taste of a potential buyer. The three-blade type costs N3, 500, four blade, N4, 800.

The standing fan comes in 16 and 18 inches. Standing fans of 16” come in plastic blade, the 18” iron blade. This rule doesn’t apply to certain brands like Fanafrik which produces both inches in iron blades. Fanafrik also has a model for recognition of the inches such as S.O. 6 which is its highest model. It is an 18 inch fan valued at N5, 500. Model S.O.7 16 inch costs N4000. Century produces both inches but makes the former with iron blades put at N4, 800, while the 16 inch made in plastic blade costs N3,300. STC has only 18 inches at N4000. , ditto for Jumyrich but with an additional N500 raise. Astros is also in the same bracket with its price put at N3, 300.

Like the standing fan, wall fans equally come in 16 and 18 inches, but the latter seems to enjoy more patronage than the former. Century has 16 inches fans which cost N3,600 and N4,500 respectively. Others like TMT, have only the 16 inch valued at TMT N5, 800. Evernal, Occenic, and Super Master have 16 inch each which goes for N3, 500, N3, 000, and N3, 500 respectively.

For prospective buyers, the aforementioned fans can be obtained from makeshift stalls in areas such as Adebayo Onipanu Bus/stop, Elpina Creek Road, Apapa; Yaya Abatan street, Ijaye Road, Ogba; and Alaba International Market, Ojo;. Other places are: 38, Adedeji Street, Itire, along Ijesha Road; 126/130, Lawanson Road, Itire, Surulere; and 126, Isolo Road, Mushin, among many others.

Perhaps individual tastes might differ; buyers must take into cognizance certain factors.

Your ceiling height: Knowing the ceiling height where your new ceiling fan will be installed will determine whether you choose a hugger ceiling fan or the variety with a down rod. National Electric Code (NEC) requires that fan blades should not hang lower than seven feet from the floor. For ceiling heights less than 7’63 , a hugger or a regular ceiling fan with a low ceiling adapter, might be preferable.

Sloped or angled ceiling: A hugger ceiling fan is not ideal for a slope ceiling. Ceiling fan blades should always be in the horizontal position where gravity finds them, else, the fan motor will incur too much strain and eventually burnt out. A sloped ceiling adapter will enable the ceiling fan to hang from 29 degrees to 52 degrees.

Determine blade span based on room size: Ceiling fans come in different blade span sizes. Knowing the estimated blade span size will greatly narrow your search when it is time you want the right ceiling fan. Below should give you a good idea of what ceiling fan blade span you will need based on the square footage of your room.

    Square Footage and Room Length x Room Width: 16 – 40 sq. feet = 243 to 323 blade span40 – 75 sq. feet = 343 to 403 blade span; 75 – 100 sq. feet = 403 to 423 blade span; 100 – 140 sq. feet = 423 to 483 blade span, 140 – 200 sq. feet = 483 to 523 blade span.

  • Tips on buying furniture

    Tips on buying furniture

Quality furniture can be bought from different places. A set of round settee is sold at Garden Supplies on Anthony Village for N30,000; home furniture band fittings are sold by Thomson Furniture at Alimosho, a Lagos suburb for N120,000. Furniture can also be got from Raumplus Nigeria Limited at Victoria Island. The MFD BED comes with mattress, side stool and a dressing mirror for N350,000. Six by six foreign mattress for hotels and household is also sold at Raumplus Nigeria Limited at Victoria Island and a sofa settee goes for N250,000.

When buying your furniture you have to consider the following steps:

Budget: Before you head to the furniture stores, determine exactly how much you have to spend on furniture. If you are relying on credit to buy furniture, think about how much monthly payment you can comfortably afford.

Measure: Measure those areas that you will be putting the desired furniture in. Write the measurements down and bring a tape measure with you to the store. Don’t rely on being able to judge whether a piece of furniture will fit just by eyeing it.

Quality: If you choose to go to a discount store, don’t be tempted by low prices alone. Look carefully at the quality of the item. Notice the floor mode and how they will hold up to customers sitting on them. Even if an item is popular, it doesn’t mean it’s worth buying.

Cost: Just because it costs much doesn’t always mean that it is good quality. It just may be overpriced because of the store that it is in. check it out as thoroughly as you would if you were in a discount furniture store.

Durability: The quality of the furniture will determine how well it is going to hold up to use. If you are looking for a family room that you will be using often, consider how your family will use it, ask yourself if it will stand up to daily use. If it’s a couch, are their cushions reversible? This can help to make it last longer.

Pardew tips Ameobi for success at ‘Boro’

Newcastle United Manager Alan Pardew is optimistic Sammy Ameobi will be betteroff with his loan switch to Middlesbrough and will come back to St. James Park a stronger figure next season.

The 20-year-old joined Boro on a loan deal until the end of the season and has already impressed Coach Tony Mowbray in his opening few days of training.

Nigeria-born Ameobi was cup-tied for Wednesday’s FA Cup fifth-round meeting with Chelsea, but the Geordie was available as a spectator from the stands at the Riverside.

Pardew has plenty of faith in Ameobi but now feels that playing regular football in the Championship will aid the striker who has his eyes on featuring for England’s Under-21 rather than Nigeria.

Pardew told the Chronicle: “It’s too soon, maybe, in this first team.

“But the experience he will gain on loan at Middlesbrough will stand him in good stead for next season.”

Ameobi could be set for his home debut against Cardiff City on Saturday as Boro try to get back in touch with the play-off zone.

Mowbray said: “He’s a big talent. Obviously he’s excited to be here.

“We have been impressed with him already.”

Boro are seventh on the log in Championship with 51 points from 34 games.

  • Ngodigha tips Eagles for final

    Ngodigha tips Eagles for final

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, David Ngodigha, believes Nigeria would reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations following their decisive victory against the Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals.

Nigeria played their best match since the start of the competition to send the pre-tournament favourites crashing, and Ngodigha reckons they should be able to beat Mali on Wednesday with their new found form.

He told Supersport.com: “We are definitely the favourites to beat Mali and reach the final.

“The Super Eagles didn’t convince us much in the group stages, and I feel the boys probably realised this and decided to raise their game and they have now shown that typical Nigerian fighting spirit in major tournaments that had been lacking earlier on.

“They stuck together, worked hard, marked very well, were quick to the ball and generally took the game to the Ivorians.

“The team have found some momentum and are playing really well at the moment.

“The change in attitude unsettled the plans of Sabri Lamouchi, and it would be best for them to continue with the same team against Mali.

“I can’t see Mali surviving us if we play with the same belief and team work; we should only avoid being over complacent and realise we still have tough opposition ahead.”

Ngodigha also put the team’s resurgence down to the fact that the coaches were bold enough to make a raft of changes.

“The coaches made changes after each game and they have tinkered the team gradually from being laid back to one that plays robustly,” he said.

“After the first game (Kenneth) Omeruo was brought in to pair (Godfrey) Oboabona, and when Efe Ambrose returned from suspension, we had a determined quartet of youngsters in defence who are ready to play for 95 minutes.

“(Sunday) Mba and (Ogenyi) Onazi’s introduction appears to have done the trick in the middle, as they have complemented Mikel’s efforts; for once we had a very mobile and fluid midfield that didn’t leave much gap between themselves and the forward line.

“In the attack, Ahmed Musa hasn’t really found his best form in this competition, and something had to be done.

“Ideye has taken his chance well and it also helped having two strikers in the middle rather than two wide men and a lone striker,” he reasoned.

  • Ike Uche tips Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana

Ike Uche tips Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana

Readers of celebrated Spanish sports daily Marca have questioned Nigeria international Ikechukwu Uche on his participation at the African Cup of Nations.

The Villarreal forward , who bagged a hat-trick on Tuesday against Farense, dismissed suggestions by readers that Nigeria does not have a competitive team and will find it difficult winning the tourney.

”Some time ago when we were not getting good results, it was expected. The team is new but working fine. We will reach the desired level with patience and hard-work. Obi Mikel and Joseph Yobo are the key players in the team. There is always pressure. You get to the final and want to win it,” said Uche.

Ikechukwu Uche has tipped a country from West Africa to cart home the African Cup of Nations trophy when the final is played on February 10.

He said: ”There are few favorites to win the cup. Ivory Coast, Ghana and Nigeria are well positioned. In theory, Ivory Coast because of the quality of their players. Reigning champions Zambia also have a chance.”

In conclusion, Uche says international teammate Nosa Igiebor has the qualities to succeed in Spain with Real Betis.

”Nosa is a good player whose football is improving, playing good games. Certainly, he’ll give what is expected of him in Betis.”

The outgoing South Africa High Commissioner to Nigeria, Kingsley Mamabolo has tipped the Super Eagles to win next year’s Africa Cup of Nations holding in his country.

“Let me first congratulate the Super Eagles of Nigeria for qualifying for the finals in South Africa. I would say honestly that Nigeria is among those countries that have been tipped to win the competition and we (South Africans) wish them well in the tournament.

“I would also say that The Bafana Bafana also have a chance to win the competition like other qualified countries. There is also a possibility of Nigeria playing South Africa in the final. All these are possibilities in a game of football which I would also love to happen. But what I would say is that may the best team win”, Mamabolo told SportingLife in an exclusive chat in Abuja.

The outgoing Envoy also revealed that his country has made fantastic preparations for Nigeria and other 15 countries that would storm South Africa for the competition holding between January 19th and February 10th, 2013.

“We as the host country are ready, preparations-wise to take care of any eventualities that may surface during the tournament. We have put up good preparations as regards security, accomondation, other logistics. • Adepoju tips Eagles for semis

    Adepoju tips Eagles for semis

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been backed to reach the last four of the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.

Former Nigerian midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju told supersport.com that he is confident that the Super Eagles will qualify from Group C, where they are drawn with defending champions, Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

He added that the Nigerians will also “go beyond the quarterfinals” of next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The former 3SC general manager explained that the Super Eagles have “quality players to achieve” a last four place in Africa’s biggest football championship.

“I believe the team will not only qualify from their group but go beyond the quarterfinals of the Nations Cup. The team have enough quality players to achieve that. But they will have to prepare very well because the other teams will be aiming to do very well too.

“In the past months, the coaches have done well by working hard and trying out several players. I believe by the time they start the camping for the Nations Cup the players will have ample time to understand each other on the pitch and the coaches will know the strengths and weaknesses of each player and fashion out suitable tactics for their Nations Cup games,” said Adepoju.

The former Racing Santander man also wants the Nigerian team to be engaged in more friendly games to help the coaches analyse the team at competitive level.

“Friendly matches might not totally give a true picture of what to expect but it is always an avenue to help the coaches see the players, analyse them and make proper selection. So the team will need more of such as they prepare for the Nations Cup,” he said.
