    TMC launches world-class cemetery

The Muslim Congress (TMC) has inaugurated International Muslim Cemetery (IMC) at Iberekodo Village in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Amir of TMC, Alhaji Abdulwasi’ Bangbala, said the event does not only represent a celebration of a physical space, but also a demonstration of TMC’s commitment to the society as a whole, and dedication to preserving human dignity beyond mortality.

Bangbala said: “The establishment of this cemetery is a reflection of these values, providing a sacred space for the community to honour our departed. This cemetery stands as a beacon of hope and a reminder of our responsibilities to one another. It is a place where families can find solace and where the faithful reflect and pay solemn respect to the departed as it is consistent with our spiritual values.”

Bangbala noted that the story of IMC began at the Ikorodu local chapter of The Muslim Congress, and thereafter championed under the national leadership of the immediate past Amir, Dr. Lukman AbdurRaheem.

He said: “The road to realization was fraught with many challenges, beginning with fundraising struggles which saw our dedicated members contributing their resources, alongside the generous support of well-meaning individuals who understood the significance of our mission. Yet, as we acquired the land that would become the home of the IMC, we faced unexpected hurdles.

“The poor state of the access road became a formidable obstacle, causing significant delays and financial strain. Each attempt to transport materials was met with frustration, yet determination fuelled our perseverance. With a deep sense of purpose and collective effort, we navigated these trials, and today, we stand proudly on 11 acres of land—a proof of our resilience and commitment.

“The IMC has finally come to fruition, a milestone which marks the realisation of our vision. We are proud to introduce the International Muslim Cemetery, a name chosen with great intention, as it signifies our aspiration to uphold universal standards of excellence in the services we provide.”

The National Amir explained that the aspiration of TMC is to replicate the project in other parts of the country for Muslim communities to have access to dignified burial grounds.

A prominent Islamic scholar, Sheikh Muhammad Jamiu Tirmidhi, described investment in the establishment of Maqbara (Muslim cemetery) as an act of worship, a flowing charity whose reward is perpetual.

“For every faithful who invests in the Maqbara will be an unfailing reward because it is a transitive act of ibadah (sadaqatul jaariyah),” he said.

Tirmidhi, an Islamic Inheritance jurisprudence expert, allayed the fears of residents of the community where the cemetery is sited, noting that unfounded tales and superstitious beliefs often ascribed to cemeteries hold no water.

“The Muslim Cemetery is an oasis and a blessed place that serves as the final abode on earth for the righteous Muslims. It is as well as visitation and recreation center for the living righteous. Thus, I want to allay the fears in residents concerning associated fretful and diabolical tales that surround living around the cemetery which make some people reject siting maqaabir (cemeteries) in their area. It is all ruse and fantasy. Once again, the Muslim Cemetery is summarily a place described as a sea never dry of Allah’s blessings. It is even a boost to the economy of the community, as the living righteous keep patronizing throughout the year. It draws traffic to the community, which is needed for economic growth,” Sheikh Tirmidhi said.

He underlined the significance of being buried in a Muslim cemetery, saying the dead would enjoy prayers offered from time to time when the living visits.

He urged Muslims to always be conscious of death, noting the wisest among humans are those who remember and prepare adequately for death – the end for every mortal.

District Head of Dambam in Bauchi State, Alhaji Bappah Idris Musa, said he was happy to see TMC as a serious organisation giving back to the community and mankind as a whole.

Alhaji Musa said cemeteries are for the general wellbeing of the public, calling on government to support organisations investing in such project.

“Well, we will always call on the government to intervene since the cemetery is a public facility. Cemeteries are for the general wellbeing of the public. So, government should come in. And now that the local government is getting autonomy, more funds will come in and they should be able to support,” he said.

TMC Amir Alhaji Abdul Wasi’i Bangbala said the project holds immense importance, serving as a revered final resting place for the departed, while also offering essential support at the grassroots level.

Bangbala appealed to Ogun State to fix the access road via Mosimi-Moro-Iraye Road, off Ikorodu-Sagamu Road.

He said: “We respectfully urge the Ogun State government to expedite the repair of the access road, ensuring unhindered access not only for visitors to the cemetery but, more crucially, for the local community whose daily lives and wellbeing are significantly impacted by this critical infrastructure.

  • TMC to political parties: let there be no violence

The Muslim Congress (TMC) has urged various political parties to eschew violence in going about the forthcoming general elections.

Its Amir (President) Dr Luqman AbdurRaheem at the Quarterly state of the Nation briefing on Saturday in Lagos, said no one should see the coming General Elections as a do-or-die-affair especially as we have had assurances from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Presidency and the President that the elections will be credible, free and fair.

AbdurRaheem said: “Let us believe these assurances and play our part in ensuring a peaceful election. Let there be no violence, vote-buying and vote-selling. INEC staff, security personnel and politicians should conduct themselves in the best possible manner since the election is a serious affair in the progress and survival of the nation.”

AbdurRaheem, an Associate Professor urged Nigerians to must desist from circulating unofficial and fake results on the social media.

This, he said, is capable of breaching public peace.

He called on the religious and traditional rulers to use their respected offices in creating an atmosphere of peace and security.

“Whichever candidate becomes victorious in any of the elections, what is paramount is the development and progress of the nation. Victorious candidates should know that the people have become more aware of their circumstances and their rights and would therefore not tolerate bad governance. The right dividends of democracy are what the people want after sacrificing to vote at the elections. For those that run afoul of the election and electioneering laws, the rule of law must be allowed to take its course as they receive deserved punishment that will serve as deterrent to others,” he said.

He hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment not to use government money for electioneering campaigns.

This, he said, is a boost to eliminating corruption in campaign financing in the nation since cash payment to voters corrupts the electoral process.

He said: “In times past, we know how our economy would have been awash with federal government’s money and other illicit monies all in the name of electioneering campaigns. It would have been time to share not just naira but dollars and other foreign currencies with different Aso-Ebi to the bargain. Nigerians would have been in carnival mood with the usual rent-a-crowd agents, outdoor entertainment equipment owners and caterers making huge gains running into billions of naira. “But everywhere is quiet now and money launderers are awash with the fear of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). There is therefore little money available for electioneering campaigns. This has reduced money politics that has not allowed credible-but-not-wealthy candidates to emerge as candidates let alone win elections. It simply means that the candidates who emerged under the Not-Too-Young-To-Run Law stand a better chance against other older and probably wealthier candidates. This is a positive development that should be sustained in the years ahead as it allows government money to be strictly used for developmental purposes. But governors and local government chairmen across the states and local governments have not made similar commitments not to spend such monies. It would be a bigger impact if they can also commit themselves.”

  • Commissioner urges stakeholders collaboration on ending fuel scarcity

Commissioner urges stakeholders collaboration on ending fuel scarcity

The Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Dr Abdul-Hakeem Abdul-Lateef, has appealed to stakeholders in the oil industry to collaborate in addressing the current fuel scarcity in the country.

Abdul-Lateef made this appeal on Thursday in an interview at Odosengolu, near Ijebu-Ode in Ogun.

The commissioner was speaking on the side-line of the formal closing of the 24th National Islamic Training Programme ( NITP ) organised by The Muslim Congress ( TMC ).

The theme of the NITP training was “Witnessing Unto Mankind”.

He described the fuel scarcity as “man inhumanity to man’’ and challenged fuel marketers to be sincere, just and avoid inflating the price or hoarding the commodity.

“Some people, because of the desire to increase the fuel price, have started to hoard the commodity and begin another chapter in our unimpressive attitude.

“I think the marketers and all the stakeholders must have the fear of God in mind and understand that life is not all about money.

“Life is about the happiness of all; because if we continue to impoverish Nigeria at the expense of so many people, we will continue to give birth to criminality,’’ Abdul-Lateef said.

Earlier, the President of TMC, Dr Luqman Abdur-Raheem explained that the NITP was a camping programme designed to build the spiritual, intellectual and social capacities of Muslims.

“At NITP, we learn Quran, Hadith, Fiqhu, Current Affairs and Issues around the Muslim world.

“It provides a platform for knowledge-sharing, socialisation and networking.

“This is the 24th edition, during which members and leadership of TMC rub minds on peaceful coexistence, nation-building and the development of Islam in all ramifications,’’ Abdur-Raheem sai.

He noted that the Muslim community was in a trying period when the Muslims, the mosques and Islamic symbols of Hijab for female Muslims are under attacks.

“We advise all Muslims to protect Islam with all resources at their disposal.

“But bombing, sabotage and killings of innocent persons are not lawful means for calling and witnessing unto mankind.

“These are methods of terrorists. Terrorists in Nigeria and in the Arab world have stolen our physical appearance and pretend to be Muslims.

“They have satanic and cultic ideologies, which are antithetical to Islam – a phenomenon of Muslim Identity Theft.

“We restate our organisation’s commendation to the Federal Government in its fight against corruption, economic sabotage, indiscipline, terrorism and impunity.

“The government is making appreciable progress but there is need for the Muslims and Non-Muslims to provide workable template from our heavenly revealed religions to the three tiers of government.

“We should also accompany this with prayers and cooperation for national development,’’ Abdur-Raheem said.

The event was supposed to be the induction ceremony of the late King of Afrobeats, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, into the Music Memorabilia Collection of the Hard Rock Cafe.

20 years after, family donates Fela’s costumes to Hard Rock collection

…Femi and Seun Kuti to perform live at ceremony

Twenty years after his demise in August 1997, costumes of the late Afrobeat maestro, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, are set to take a fitting place among other world music greats on the renowned Hardrock Cafe Music Me Memorabilia Collection.

On Thursday, May 25, the singer’s famous children, Yeni, Femi and Seun Kuti, will hand over costumes worn by Fela, including pieces of clothing and shoes to representatives of Hard Rock International in Lagos.

A two-part ceremony begins by 3pm at the Hardrock Café Lagos with an induction ceremony to be witnessed by late Fela’s friends, entertainment bigwigs and corporate Nigeria.  The ceremony will climax by 7pm when Femi Kuti with his Positive Force band and Seun Kuti with his Egypt 80 band hit the stage for a pulsating power-packed night of Afrobeat music.

One of the major highlights of the induction will be the release of a new song dedicated to the late Afrobeat maestro by two-time Grammy Award-winning artiste, Lekan Babalola. The song entitled ‘Mr. Lakaye’ (Tribute to Ogun) is produced by Will Angelero (New York/UK based Producer) and co-produced by Lekan Babalola. In addition, sensational artist, Fola David will do a live speed-painting of Fela on stage.

Also to be donated are original evergreen album covers whose designer, veteran artist, Lemi Gharioku will also be in attendance. Lemi is known for listening to and digesting Fela’s music, then expressing his reaction in Fela’s album cover design.  Lemi designed over 26 Fela album covers.

The Hard Rock Café induction is being put together by Temple Management Company (TMC) after brokering a similar donation last year by juju maestro King Sunny Ade (KSA) as well as staging the Sunny On Sunday concert.

“The Hard Rock Induction event again reinforces the influence that the great Fela Anikulapo-Kuti still commands twenty years later,” TMC’s Head of Entertainment, Mark Redguard said.

“We at TMC are delighted to be identified with another historic occasion that further develops and memorializes the Nigerian Music industry worldwide.”

Fela’s music journey began in 1958 when his parents sent him to London to study Medicine but he opted for Trinity College School of Music. Fela formed his first band, Koola Lobitos, in 1961 providing the fodder for a movement that morphed into Afrobeat, a combination of elements of traditional High Life, Rock, Funk and Jazz.

Fela’s music became the voice of the hopeless and a constant thorn in the flesh of successive military governments. Some of his popular albums include Open & Close (1971), Gentleman (1973), Confusion (1975), Expensive Shit (1975),Zombie (1976) ending with Confusion Break Bones (1990).

Other legends whose souvenirs are on the Hard Rock Memorabilia Collection include King Sunny Ade, Quincy Jones, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Bob Marley among others.
