TOKE MAKINWA GOES TOUGH ON CHEATING MEN

IN another episode of her Vlog, Toke Moments, OAP, Toke Makinwa took cheating men to the cleaners. She was reacting to an email from a fan, simply called Mary, who claimed she walked in on her boyfriend cheating on her with a girl he claimed was his colleague. She is pained by the fact that he is neither remorseful nor apologetic, an attitude which irked the radio presenter.

“What sort of guys do we have around today, why are men such ‘a-holes’. Why would you be caught in the wrong…it’s not like an apologies are going to do anything but it sort of helps to know that you are sorry,” she said.

Mary wanted to know if cheating is a deal breaker in a relationship but Toke responds that no one can answer that question for her.

“It is bad enough that we come from Africa where men are seen as the alpha and omega and you hear crazy things like men are polygamous by nature, and it’s a man’s world and you should even count yourself lucky that at least he’s staying with you. Some of these guys even go as far as telling you, ‘my guy friend did the same thing to a girl and she’s still with him…’

“The odds are really against us living in this region. Let’s be frank. People often believe that cheating is not the end of the world. Cheating is one of those things that comes with a relationship; it’s one of the dramas you have to deal with,” she said.

In Makinwa’s opinion, women need to worry more about themselves. “From your tone in the email asking whether cheating is a deal breaker, almost sounds like you are considering staying in the relationship. If you feel like you can handle it, that’s on you,” she concludes the session.

  • YouTube hosts Nigerian content creators at 10

YouTube hosts Nigerian content creators at 10

It was a night of glamour as YouTube hosted top Nigerian YouTube content creators at a dinner to mark 10 years of wonderful video sharing experiences.

The event, which took place at the Intercontinental Hotel and Resort on Victoria Island, Lagos, saw the likes of Olisa Adibua, Toke Makinwa and Ariyike Akinbobola among others.

Speaking at the event, ‎ veteran Broadcaster Adibua recounted how he got inspired while growing up in the United Kingdom (UK) and how he got a contract job with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA 5) at the age of 17 when he arrived Nigeria.

He further noted that he contributed to the success stories of many Nigerian star artistes, naming popular musicians like Eldee, StyPlus, D-Banj among those he helped to boost their careers, especially through Big Brother Nigeria.

The co-founder of Storm Records and one of the chief brains behind Big Brother Nigeria however, advised young broadcast on-air-personalities (OAP) thus: “When you are on radio for instance, you have an instant power. I’ve several times paid fines to the National Broadcasting Commission. But why do I have to pay this much to them, when they are richer than me.

“I tell young people to read a lot, because not reading wide is their problem. They don’t read. They believe presentation is just all about sitting in front of the camera. If you must succeed in this business especially in the global scale, you have to read about different things going on within your locality and around the world.

“If you want to interview a person, it is just wise for you to do a background check about the person. So you need to read to be ahead of your interviewee.”

For Toke Makinwa (of TokeMoment) her passion for what she does has been the backbone of her continuity.

On TokeMoment, she runs a regular monologue on everything from self-improvement to relationship issues in a loose and funny manner.

“When I stated out on YouTube, I was not aware of the financial benefits of using YouTube. I would just upload videos and be happy that they get good number of views. It was much later in 2013 that I got to know that I could monetize my contents to earn money.

“I find joy when I run into ladies at shopping malls outside the country and they identify me and can easily relate their issues with me. It gives me a lot of joy. You know, usually, people like to talk to someone who does not know them about the issues, TokeMoment has filled that space.

“Uploading a new video every Wednesday has not been easy for me but I also know that the key thing about YouTube is consistence and I have kept at it. I must confess that YouTube has been a huge source of blessing to my life,” she recounted.

Meanwhile, for Akinbobola, lawyer and mother of two, YouTube is an avenue for people to gather a lot of experiences and remain loyal to who they are.

“On YouTube, I talk about relationship dynamics. I have in the past done videos on YouTube on how to spy on your nannies, I have also done videos on parenting.

“But you know what, the views I get on my channel aren’t up to 5, 000. But when I don’t box myself, and do freestyle videos, amazingly, I get over 100,000 views.” She stated.

Akinbobola, who does videos on sex and relationship, further said that her contents had been greeted with stream of criticisms, stressing: “Well, my channel is not for babies, but for adults.

“Most times when I talk about sex, people tend to look at me as if‎ it’s a no-go-area, But as a married woman, this is something I do, even, people who are not married do this. So, why do we shy away discussing it?”

Speaking on the event, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, West Africa Communication and Public Affairs Manager said the event was aimed at leveraging the 10th anniversary of YouTube to spotlight Nigerians who in spite of all odds are constantly sharing content, and by so doing, are building their own fan bases.

“Some people still think only highly trained individuals or people with access to funds can create content and run YouTube channels. it is our hope that by showcasing the inspiring work that these individual creators are doing, we are able to help inspire more Nigerians to begin to share more video content. With you need little or no start-up capital.

“Since the launch of the Nigeria domain of YouTube, in December 2011, YouTube has grown to become one of the top online destinations for Nigerians looking for inspiration and creative expression.

“Nigerian creators have also taken advantage of the power of large number of local and global viewers getting on the platform on a daily basis.

“Today, Nigeria entertainment content like Nollywood movies and music videos by local Nigerian artists are being consumed across the world, and are thus generating tens of millions of views.

“There are now more than one million channels earning revenue through the YouTube Partnership Program, in more than 30 countries, and it’s exciting to see more Partners coming on board in Nigeria too.

“Globally, partner revenue across YouTube has increased by 60% over the past year and partner revenue from mobile ad sales has tripled,” he maintained.

It would be recalled that in 2014, YouTube views in Nigeria increased by 78%, while views of Nigerian content increased by 95% – a testament of the role YouTube is playing in the export of Nigerian content.

The video-sharing website headquartered in San Bruno, California, United States has become the go-to destination for video footage on the web.  The volume of content unites people from all walks of life through video.

The night tagged: “YouTube & the Stars event” also had group content creators on YouTube like Naija’s Craziest and TechCityNG.

  • Storm over for Toke Makinwa

    Storm over for Toke Makinwa

Nothing can be more inspiring than seeing a woman rise above pain and heartbreak and encourage others while at it. Like an empress, who is not allowed to show even a moment of weakness, Toke Makinwa has shocked many by going through a life changing phase without even flinching.

Despite recently being in the news over her troubled marriage, Toke surprisingly set her pain aside and used her situation to inspire others.  She rose above the storm and channelled her challenge into a positive purpose.

The on air media personality inspired others by saying: “The amount of emails I have received from women across the world going through difficult situations is heartbreaking. Thank you all for sharing. In a world where the popular belief out there is that women hate each other, women can’t stand each other etc, I have gotten emails/calls from women sharing their own personal pains, and that is courageous.

“I can’t reply everyone, even though I honestly wish I could. It is funny how God uses even the most unbelievable things to bless you. I have been given a voice, a platform. I don’t even know how it all happened but I woke up one day and I found God and with that came purpose.

“It’s never about you, as hard as it seems. Sometimes you go through things not for you but for the people around you who need direction, a word of prayer or more. May God heal every broken heart out there. May His light give you the courage to begin to love yourself. It is tough being a woman; the pressure is real. You don’t have to be a victim; you can rise above it all.

“Do not let society tell you otherwise. Be bold. Be strong. Trust God’s purpose for your life and keep shinning.”

To Toke, life must go on, as she confirmed that her Vlog would still be active.

  • We’re all guilty of tribalism says Toke Makinwa

We’re all guilty of tribalism says Toke Makinwa

ON-AIR-PERSONALITY, Toke Makinwa, has risen to the defence of the Lagos State monarch, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, over his purported threat to Igbo residents in the state should they fail to vote the APC guber candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday.

Though the media personality described the Oba’s statement as ignorant, she said that he is not to take the blame in all entirety.

In an Instagram post, the OAP talks about tribalism and how it has been handed down from generation to generation, making everybody guilty of it.

In her words; “Tribalism has been and is still being practiced today. Lagos is home for everyone, our generation knows better too. Let’s not let this come in between us, the Oba’s statement was ignorant but do we really blame him? We all at some point in our lives have been on the receiving end of acts of tribalism. Let’s take out the tension and be real with each other.”

Makinwa added that our parents’ generation practiced tribalism openly and they were not corrected.

“In some homes, befriending people from other tribes was frowned on. Marrying from another tribes is still being frowned on today. Tribalism, even from people of the same tribe is real too. What we need is to educate and not instigate. I had Igbo friends growing up. I was the only Yoruba girl in the midst of Igbo girls. Did they make fun of me? Sometimes, but it wasn’t out of malice. We lived, we loved and we are still very close. I have had a friend’s mum tell me “haaa omo Ondo ni e? Mi o mo ooo, a kin ba Ondo sore” meaning – I’m from Ondo? She didn’t know…. If she had, she won’t let her daughter befriend me because they don’t like Ondo people, Ondo and Ijebu people don’t mix,” she added.

She ended the post with a call on her fans to educate those around them. “Vote who you want, vote your conscience but please stop with the tribalism comments. Our beauty is in our diversity. It is a distraction, don’t fall for it. Let’s all live as one,” Makinwa concludes.

Toke Makinwa, Maje Ayida’s romance crumbles again

The 12-year-old romance between Toke Makinwa and Maje Ayida has nose-dived with the two lovebirds going their separate ways. While this would not be the first time they would embark on such separation, there were indications that the latest development was based on the emotional issues they shared on their respective social media platforms.

While Toke wrote about being faithful to a relationship that has no definite direction, Maje countered that his love was not being returned. Toke eventually came right out with it last weekend when she announced that she had broken up with Maje. She was also quick to add that she would no longer subject herself to any society-induced pressure that would force her to get married to the wrong man.

Apparently fearing that the relationship might break up with the way things were going between them, Toke chose to opt out at a time the damage would be less. Yet, many who have been familiar with the style of the two lovers insist they might make up again as this would not be the first time they would separate only to come together again. But a source close to Toke said she had finally made up her mind to call it quits..
