Imbibe discipline as a way of life, commissioner, Mudi Africa admonish boys

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, and Chief Executive Officer of Mudi Africa, Mudiagha Clement, have admonished boys to remain disciplined and focused in order to achieve their life’s purpose.

Wahab and Mudi were among panelists at the final day of the 2025 Lagos Boy-Child Initiative residential workshop organised by the Office of the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu.

Over 200 boys selected from private and public schools, orphanages, and technical schools, were part of the three day workshop.

Wahab urged the boys not to allow their background limit their purpose in life. He also advised them to be consistent in what they want to achieve and avoid distractions.

“Find your purpose in life. Don’t look at your background and don’t allow it to limit you. Ensure you have discipline. Have the courage to say NO at times and learn to speak out. Be consistent and don’t get distracted. Don’t chase money, chase your dreams and the money will come.

“Don’t be discouraged by the circumstances of your birth or environment. Every boy-child should have a clear vision of what he wants in life,” he said.

Wahab praised Mrs. Sanwo-Olu for organising an initiative that focuses on the boy-child to ensure he is not neglected.

“When we nurture a boy-child, we are nurturing the pillar of a home,” he said.

Mudi, who emphasised the need for discipline, counseled the boys on self-improvement. According to him, growth will be limited without discipline, no matter the talent.

“You must have vision. No matter how talented you are, you must have discipline. Improve yourself and focus on your education,” he advised.

Climax of the three-day workshop was a cooking competition among five groups of five boys each. Each member of the group that came first (Team Ikeja) received a shopping voucher worth N100,000, while other members of the second place (Team Lagos Island) and third place winners (Team Epe) received a shopping voucher worth N50,000.

Three weeks after, Lagos re-opens Ebute-Ero market

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment has reopened Ebute-Ero Gorodom market after three weeks of closure due to breach of environmental infractions.

The Commissioner For Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said this in a statement yesterday.

Wahab gave the order for the reopening of the market after an inspection tour to Lagos Island and environs, especially Oke Arin and Gorodom.

The commissioner sensitised the traders on the dangers of neglecting the environment, urging them to make their surroundings clean.

“Wahab who gave conditions for the reopening of the market, warned the sellers to adhere to the rules, or it would be closed down again.

“Nobody wants to inflict pain on anybody. The government will never want to inflict pain on its citizens.

“But we must be responsible as citizens to play our own roles. When we came and we ordered this enforcement, it was a very tough decision but necessary.

“If you stand on that road now, you can see the alignment yourself. This has not been done for over 10 years because people chose to be irresponsible.

“If you are making money from a place, it behoves you to even take care of that neighbourhood,” he said.

Wahab urged the traders not to think of the money they make alone but to also take care of their environment.

“We shall go around every nook and cranny of Lagos states, every marketplace where we have our alignments because if there’s a flood, you people will be abusing the government.

Tokunbo Wahab emerges architect of water revolution

In a city like Lagos, the hum of progress is often drowned out by the challenges of rapid urbanization, and infrastructure projects can feel like distant promises rather than tangible realities. Yet, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State is steadily rewriting this narrative. One of the most transformative projects underway is the Adiyan Water Works (AWW), a bold initiative set to deliver 70 million gallons of clean, potable water daily to Lagosians.

At the helm of this ambitious endeavour is Tokunbo Wahab, the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources—a man whose quiet determination and unwavering focus have become a source of hope for millions.

When Governor Sanwo-Olu recently visited the Adiyan Water Works site, it wasn’t just a routine inspection. It was a moment of affirmation—a recognition of the hard work and vision driving this project forward.

As the governor walked through the site, the air buzzed with excitement, not just for the technical milestones achieved, but for what this project represents: a future where clean water is no longer a luxury but a given.

For Tokunbo Wahab, this visit was a validation of his tireless efforts to turn a lofty vision into a reality that will touch the lives of everyday Lagosians.

The commissioner’s role in this project is nothing short of pivotal. Steering a project of this magnitude in a city as complex as Lagos is no small feat. Yet, under his watchful eye, the Adiyan Water Works has reached an impressive 80% completion rate. This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a testament to Wahab’s ability to navigate bureaucratic hurdles, logistical challenges, and the occasional skepticism that comes with large-scale infrastructure projects. His approach is not just about meeting deadlines; it’s about ensuring that every drop of water delivered will make a difference in the lives of Lagosians.

What sets Wahab apart is his deep understanding of what this project means for the people of Lagos.

Tokunbo Wahab finishes strong for the year

The name Tokunbo Wahab has continued to register in the consciousness of many people in and outside the shores of Nigeria.

Interestingly, it’s in a positive light and for many good reasons since the debonair Wahab, widely referred to as TW, got into the murky waters of politics.

The 52-year-old indigene of Epe, Lagos State, prides himself on his ability to make impactful contributions while aligning with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s aims, goals, and visions.

TW is not about just getting anything done, he is mostly focused on getting it done the right way. He has exceeded the expectations of many, confounded his critics, and shown rare traits that distinguish him as a perfect gentleman.

Though TW isn’t one of the politicians that have no history or pedigree, he has continued to wow naysayers with his success and achievements since he was first appointed as a Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Education.

His position as the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources was not only to reward his loyalty but to reward his dedication, commitment, and impressive records as an aide.

For a trained legal expert, who has not only distinguished himself in the practice but made a name and fortune for himself while doing it, it was surprising to many when he accepted the offer to serve in a small capacity and in a not-too-familiar field.

As if the Governor is hell-bent on stretching his abilities and capabilities, he switched TW from the Ministry of Education to the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, and rather than miss the point, he has continued to excel.

2024, in no small measure, saw TW finishing strong among his peers and contemporaries. He has not only spearheaded transformative policies but has actively driven their implementation with visible results. This year, Lagosians witnessed a determined fight against pollution, a bold restructuring of waste management systems, and an unwavering commitment to enforcing environmental laws.

Under Wahab’s stewardship, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has not only addressed long-standing issues but has also set a foundation for future resilience.

Wahab: sustainable environment achievable through collective effort

Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has restated the need for all local government areas to support the state government to address environmental challenges through continuous enforcement and sustained advocacy.

Wahab spoke after an inspection tour to Savage/Elegbata Drainage channel around the Olowogbowo/Apongbon axis in Lagos Island. He said the government is determined to find lasting solutions to flooding in Lagos Island and environs.

According to the commissioner, the team had to visit the Savage/Elegbata Drainage channel to open the drainage outfall towards discharging into the Lagoon effectively. The outfall was blocked because of an ongoing road construction in the area, he noted.

Wahab also lamented that human detrimental activities had damaged the roads and other infrastructure in the area. He berated the local governments for being complicit ‘because they have allowed and condoned various unsanitary activities of the residents’.

According to him, the people were steep in destructive habits, but ‘the government will not rest; it would instead continue to ramp up the enforcement and advocacy approach’.

The commissioner also urged everyone engaged in illegal activities, such as mechanic workshops, street trading, abattoirs, unapproved parking lot, among others, under the Apongbon Bridge and environs to vacate immediately as enforcement agents have been given the go- ahead to begin work.

According to him, government enforcement officials would be stationed in the axis to monitor the level of compliance, make arrests and prosecute if the need arises.

He implored residents to always take ownership of all infrastructure and the environment by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels/roads, street trading, and others because ‘it is the responsibility of all residents to maintain the environment to ensure its sustainability’.

Special Adviser on to the governor on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, described the Apongbon situation as ‘unfortunate and the people careless with infrastructure put in place to benefit the community’.

Rotimi-Akodu challenged property owners not to compromise their buildings for stipends/handouts because the ‘government will not be deterred until it achieves a community that is environmentally sustainable’.

Others in the team were Permanent Secretary (Office of Environmental Services) Dr. Gaji Omobolaji; Permanent Secretary (Office of Drainage Services) Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; Managing Director LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, and some management staff from the ministry.

The team visited the Savage/Elegbata Drainage Channel which cut across Cole Street, Savage Lane, George Street, Abu Lane, Apongbon underbridge and Olowogbowo.

‘Sustainable practices will keep Ozone layer, earth safe’

Nigerians must adopt sustainable practices, harness science and technology for positive change, and advocate for a climate-resilient future to keep the Ozone layer and earth safe.

Laos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab said this at the celebration of the World Ozone Day with the theme: ‘Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action’.

The event was organised by Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Association of Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Practitioners (NARAP), among other stakeholders.

Wahab, who reiterated the significance of the ozone layer in regulating the earths’ climate, noted that Lagos’ unique geography made it vulnerable to coastal flooding, thus emphasising the need for urgent actions.

He outlined the government’s efforts towards addressing climate change to include Climate Action Plan by achieving carbon neutrality by 2050; ensuring the use of ozone-friendly refrigerants, phasing out harmful substances and promoting alternatives; environmental regulations, ensuring compliance with international treaties and national laws; sustainable practices, encouraging renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate-resilient infrastructure.

General Manager of LASEPA Babatunde Ajayi said the advocacy programme was to sensitise the public on the Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) substances and other greenhouse gases, which depleted the Ozone layer, and their effects on the climate.

Ajayi said Lagos was one of the top destinations of used cooling equipment around the world.

“Hence, adequate awareness needs to be passed on the effects of the equipment to the environment,” he noted.

“Lagos State is vulnerable to climate changes arising from our activities, and if adequate and effective measures are not taken, considerable physical, ecological and socio-economic loses will be incurred.

“LASEPA has taken up this responsibility to enlighten and inform the public about the depletion of the Ozone layer on this year’s World Ozone Day. There are policies guiding us, and we do enforcement from time to time. We are in a very strong partnership with the association that governs the activities in Lagos, and also with the federal agency that oversees the Ozone layer.

“We visit this people from time to time to enforce these policies we have put together and ensure they comply by the regulations on the handling of the materials that contain the ozone-depleting gases.

“As part of measures to curb these problems, the Lagos State government on September 11, held a stakeholder’s engagement and launched a Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) registry. This initiative follows the alarming rate of Greenhouse Gas emissions and the devastating effects on the air quality,” he added.

Federal Controller of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Lagos, Mrs. Olabimpe Adenaike, said the Federal Government is working to curve the depletion of the Ozone layer.

She said: “The ports are entry points for refrigerants, so Customs officers have been trained to seize such to prevent them from permeating the country. The ministry is also disseminating information, providing technical assistance, training and expertise, as well as making funding available to those who need it.”

President of the Nigerian Association of Refrigerator and Air conditioning Practitioners (NARAP) John Akhapue said the association has been partnering the Federal Government, especially on ozone layer issues, and will continue to adhere to government policies and sensitise its members on the dangers of a depleted Ozone layer.

  • Tokunbo Wahab remains fearless

    Tokunbo Wahab remains fearless

It is without doubt that the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, is an audacious individual, who is determined to ensure he corrects the ills of the environment.

Following through with the plans to ensure canal and waterways are cleared, Wahab has continued to clear obstructions on canal paths across Lagos.

Despite propaganda by individuals hiding under flimsy reasons, Wahab has remained lion-hearted in discharging his duties as the commissioner for environment.

A recent public opinion on the state of Lagos’ environment gave kudos to Wahab saying if the trained silk were corrupt, his current demolition spree would have been tailored towards collecting bribes and making billions, but Wahab is not doing that. On this note, he deserves credit.

The opinion further noted one thing; the genuine and honest intention of Wahab is not in doubt as he appears to be driven by passion and commitment to hard work and duty, a rare quality in Nigeria.

This commendation clearly shows that Wahab is a great mind whose noble mission is mostly misconceived by many.

Many have seen the quality of a conscientious personality in him and his dauntless spirit has continued to endear so many Lagosians to him.

Those close to Wahab also squealed that despite dealing with an historic rot and facing a hydra-headed cum knotty problem, his confidence, calm mien, and unabashed demeanour at tough situations have continued to work in his favour.

Interestingly, his boss, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised Wahab’s dedication and commitment and promised to back him with the laws of the land.

The accused, who claimed to hail from Kano State, was caught with Saad and Muritala (both at large), while they broke down the concrete barriers and extracted the iron.

“Over the years, theft and vandalism of government properties, especially items and public infrastructure that are valuable and profitable, have become the target of these people, a situation that we can no longer condone,” Wahab said.

The commissioner explained that concrete barriers are built along all drainage channels/canals to prevent people from encroaching on their Right of Way.

According to him, the vandals were arrested yesterday morning following a whistleblower’s information.

Mohammed, who resides in one of the shanties close to the canal, claimed that the concrete barriers fell and that he only tried to remove the irons for personal use. He said he was not aware the concrete barriers were built for a purpose.

The accused also tried to escape while being conveyed to the Ministry and broke the vehicle’s side mirror. He has since been handed over to the State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences for further investigation and prosecution.

Wahab also warned against the vandalism and sale of items like railings on sidewalks, bridges, railroad tracks, irons from concrete barriers as well as manhole covers, warning that anyone caught will face the law.

  • Tokunbo Wahab’s scores another goal

    Tokunbo Wahab’s scores another goal

Despite his gentle mien, Tokunbo Wahab has remained steely in his resolve to change the environment and water resources landscape in Lagos State. When you meet TW, as he’s fondly called, one question comes to mind, what will a man with so much pedigree as a successful lawyer with close to two decades of experience be looking for in politics, a game perceived to be dirty?

However, Wahab’s cogent reason for delving into politics is driven by his passion to serve the people and also ensure the people get the quality representation that will better lives in cognisance with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S.

With a very resounding persona laced with a meek and human nature, the former Special Adviser and now Commissioner is regarded as one of the most performing cabinet members with the giant stride recorded in his quest for perfection in the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in line with global standard.

Under his watch, Wahab, who is the Managing Partner at Wall and Ace legal Firm, has read out the riot act and individuals, who have consistently shunned and broken environmental laws have been consistently dealt with by the law.

What has continued to wow many is that Wahab doesn’t act above the provision of law. This is because, for any of his actions in the ministry, TW ensures his team acts in line with the provision of law in a warning and taking actions.

TW scored a goal recently when the ministry he oversees signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a waste management company in Ghana, Jospong, to treat solid and liquid waste in the state. The MOU, initiated by Wahab, and the Executive Chairman, Jospong Group, Dr Joseph Agyepong, will establish a Material Recovery Facility to reduce downstream pressure (waste disposal volume) at landfills.
