    Untold side of Tokunbo Wahab

The Lagos State commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, is one man, whose name is being discussed in different tones in Lagos State, Nigeria and beyond the shores of the country. And the reason for this is not concealed.

His decision to follow through with his principal’s plan on environment and water resources for a better Lagos has been why his name has been ringing bells across the metropolis.

Those who know TW, as he’s fondly called, will readily spill that he’s never known to do anything in half measure. His belief in the axiom that says what is worth doing is worth doing well has been his watchword for anything he sets his mind on doing.

Hence, it was not surprising when he made a significant impact on the education sector while he served as the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in his first term. Well known as one who never acts or makes decisions based on emotion, his legal training and association with some of the best heads in the country and beyond has always seen his actions being done on evidence and hard facts.

However, beyond the steely demeanour, and resolve to go through with the Governor’s plans for the state on environment, TW remains the kindest of all hearts. His benevolence reverberates across and beyond Lagos and the shores of Nigeria. A little bird chirped that though he’s feared by environmental law breakers, he has a weakness for sports and good music.

The birdy further chirped that at the sound of King Sunny Ade’s guitars or Ebenezer Obey’s tunes, TW finds it difficult not to sway to the sonorous voices and sounds of these two Juju legends. It was further disclosed that he’s an ardent supporter of Spanish professional football club, Real Madrid and at the mention of Hala Madrid, a smile curves up his lips. Another sport which keeps TW glued to the screens is Tennis and his favourite player at the moment remains the acclaimed king of clay, Rafael Nadal Parera.

  • Why we ordered removal of inner street gates in Lekki, by Commissioner

Why we ordered removal of inner street gates in Lekki, by Commissioner

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources in Lagos State has informed members of the Lekki Residents Association that the removal of gates in their inner streets was carried out in the broader interest of all residents of the state.

Wahab spoke at a stakeholders meeting convened by his transport counterpart, Oluwaseun Oshiyemi, at Alausa.

He described it as ‘a very painful decision taken because the government has the responsibility to regulate operations at Lekki I which is a government scheme’.

According to Wahab, many people, areas and institutions got away with infractions because they worked in silos, and so the decision to remove gates of inner streets was taken so the government would not be accused of bias.

He also corrected the notion that only the Ministry of Transport could deal with such a case, saying all ministries represent sub-units of one whole system which could be directed by Mr Governor because they are all linked and interrelated.

The commissioner, who said the action was ‘regrettable’, said all the gates are intact and would be returned after an amicable agreement is reached on modalities for re-installing them.

He reiterated that the agreement must include a proviso that the gates cannot be shut before midnight, and must have personnel manning them to ensure seamless entry and exit for all residents.

Oshiyemi said the meeting was not to apportion blame, but to ensure rules and regulations are obeyed if the streets are to be gated.

He added that while the government is not keen on jeopardising the security of the Lekki I residents, it will also not jeopardise the free movement of people as enshrined in the constitution.

Chairman of the Lekki Residents Association, Yomi Idowu appealed to the government to reconsider the decision to remove all the inner gates.

He explained that following the directives of the Ministry of Transportation to keep all the inner gates open, the association complied but had to contend with some recalcitrant ones that refused to open theirs.

Idowu attributed the erection of street gates to their experience during the EndSARS riot.

  • Tokunbo Wahab on cloud nine

If you say Tokunbo Wahab is now reaping the fruits of his labour, it would be apt. As coordinator of the Buhari Integrity Group (BIG), Wahab ran it as if his life depended on it.

His efforts have now been rewarded by Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Sanwo-Olu, who seems to have noticed all he has done. On Monday, the Special Adviser to Sanwo-Olu on Education was hosted to an evening of bliss by friends and close associates at Ocean Basket in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

The dinner party was held to celebrate the lawyer’s new appointment and to charge him to take education in Lagos to the next level.

He later assured that he would give his best, adding that he had seen the governor’s passion and commitment towards having a better state.
